Toph Beifong

Toph would kiss you so hard it would take your breath away.

It would last for minutes as she roughly devoured you, finally giving in to feelings she had for years, and showing you exactly how much she liked you.

Katara

Fuck would Katara be passionate.

She would realize she had feelings one day while you ate dinner by the campfire.

Everyone had turned in for the night, but the two of you had been blabbering on about random stuff all night, your meals forgotten in your hands as you chatted.

She would suddenly see how beautiful you were, how perfect every word you said was, how much your moving lips called her name.

She would lean in and hold both sides of your face, admiring your confusion only for a moment before catching your lips in hers, kissing you like it was the last day on earth.

Azula

Azula would be yelling at you when it happened. She was pissed about some stupid little thing that had nothing to do with you, and yet she took it out on you.

You finally snapped at her to stop, that you didn't deserve her anger.

She would pin you up against the wall, both you wrists in her iron grip as she would growl, "what did you just say to me?"

"I said, be nicer," you would shoot back.

And with that, she kissed you, her anger melting as she softened against your lips. When she finally pulls away, she'll tease you again.

"Nice enough for you, (Y/n)?"

Aang

You know you'd be the one to initiate your first kiss with Aang. He may be brave on the battlefield, but when it came to love, he was a bit of a wuss.

You knew it was because he had no experience; he spent his entire childhood fighting the old fire lord. He may have flirted with Katara, but you didn't think it had ever gone anywhere.

So when you pressed your lips to his for a quick, surprise peck, you were the one that was surprised as he blew a gust of wind at you, knocking you off your feet.

"Crap!" Aang swore, hurrying to help you up. "I'm so sorry! You caught me off guard!"

"Clearly."

"Can we try that again?"

Zuko

Zuko and she had finally broken up.

They'd been together for years, and you had been pining from the sidelines for just as long.

As he cried on your shoulder, you tried not to think about what you wanted to do to him, knowing it was selfish timing.

Despite this, during one of your conversations, as you were leaned in and telling him he would find someone who is perfect for him, he leaned in and captured your lips in his, roughly moving against you and pulling you closer.

You finally broke away, gasping.

"We can't do this yet, please. You're still in love with..."

"Oh, (Y/n). You have no idea who I'm in love with."

Sokka

Sokka would throw you the perfect dinner. He would plan your first kiss days in advance, determined to make it perfect.

Of course, Katara was the one who cooked it, but it's the thought that counts, right?

When the moment came, after a perfect night and a beautiful walk across the beach, he would gently grasp your waist on either side and pull you in.

He'd connect his forehead to yours before touching noses, and finally, leaning in for your lips. It would be slow and meaningful, and he would rub your back while he kissed you.

It would be the perfect end to the perfect night.

Okay okay but hear me now imagine you the reader you're traveling with Katara, Sokka and Aang along the way you get up your fortune told by Aunt Woo Who told you in the future you will be married to a great and powerful Lord, you of course don't see that happening cuz you don't really have an interest in dating let alone marriage and didn't see yourself as someone worth being loved years go by you and Zuko are friends even though it was hard for you to get used to him being part of the group you two were civil and as you guys got older and became closer to the point that the other word was involved you like Zuko he loved you and you guys hit your twenties he started giving you gifts and other stuff, Katara mentioned that he might be courting you which you were confused about then she mentioned about the time you all went to Aunt Wou and about your Fortune then you start to remember that you were to marry a Lord of course you didn't take this seriously and just shrugged it off and just told Katara that there's no way possible and that you didn't believe it but the whole conversation makes you not be able to sleep at night cuz now you're now in your room pacing that you might get married to Zuko who's the only Lord that you are well acquainted with and around your age it's to the point you start avoiding him and being awkward, and yes he is courting you and is planning to ask you to marry him in the near future when every is right and wants to ask your parents or guardians blessings

Summary: It had almost become a tradition for you and Zuko to talk after the sun had gone down, leaving the both of you wrapped in a blanket of secrecy. But after Zuko falls asleep a little too early, it leaves you to wonder.

When you first met Zuko, you honestly thought he was trying to kill you. The way his lip would curl up upon laying his eyes on you, or how he would single you out in a fight so he could make sure he was the only one who had a shot at you, it all made every moment between the two of you dreadful and when he decided to join your 'team' you could only think of the worst case scenario.

But now, now that you've got to know Zuko without the usual heat that came with his arrival or the scornful glare that he had to keep up, he was starting to grow on you.

It hadn't been instant, you, but probably Katara, took the longest to warm up to him. It was hard to look past all the times he had tried to capture you, burn you alive, hunt you down and even sell you out, but once you had tried, you felt your efforts rewarded tenfold as Zuko did his best to get to know you.

His mannerisms have changed a lot since the first time you met him. Instead of the brash, whiny and impatient prince who needed to get his way, you were met with a gentle, intelligent and peaceful warrior who had joined the fight against the Fire Nation.

He had grown more protective, making sure no one got hurt and always seeking you out first to check for injuries. He offered his guidance to both Aang and whoever else would take it, leading to the two of you bending together. Whenever the two of you would, due to your clashing elements, it always put on quite the show for the others as they watched fire try to wash away water.

It was how you believed you ended up here, lying beneath a sea of stars. The two of you were side by side, the others quite a distance away as they slept peacefully, getting ready for a day of adventure. Not the two of you though. You both had grown accustomed to the late-night talks that you weren't sure who had first started them.

It was such a regular occurrence that if one of you noticed the other one waiting out, you would rush the night along, getting into positions like you were currently in. Even the rest of the gang had grown used to this and wouldn't question it if the two of you went off together or when they awoke they found you both laying next to each other somewhere.

The topics that you would speak about were vast, never being a copy of the night before. You had spoken about what it had been like growing up and how your childhoods had varied, though you both found comfort in one another for a feeling of isolation. Talk of tradition and training, even gossip that the other would have a hard time following along with. Whatever could be spoken about had been.

Except for the large scar that took up a good chunk of Zuko's face. You had never felt the need to ask, even now, as you had turned away from the stars above to face Zuko, the older boy asleep far too early than he would've liked to be, you couldn't bring yourself to ever ask. If it was something that Zuko would ever want to talk about, then he would bring it up himself. But since that was yet to happen, you kept any topic of conversation far from it.

That didn't stop you from staring at it now. Even in the darkness, it was a large contrast from the rest of his face. For so long you had only ever allowed your eyes to briefly linger on the scar, only ever allowed your eyes to trace the corners of it and take it in. But now, a delicate hand reached forward and with a feather-light tip of your finger, your skin came in contact with his scared.

Where others may have seen brutality or felt disgust and pity at the sight, you couldn't help but wonder how such a large portion of his face seemed to bring so much life to Zuko's being, how though it may hide the beauty that may have once been there, a new beauty bloomed with it.

Only when you were satisfied did you draw your hand away. You had done enough looking for tonight. Instead, you curled in on yourself, trying to store as much heat as you could for the night, not wanting to leave Zuko's side.

And when the others found the two of you wrapped around one another in the morning, they turned a blind eye and allowed the both of you to come to your own senses and figure out the mess you were both slowly creating.

keys jingling on her hip knock with every step she took. she walked down the steps and made her way down to the far end of the hall that was full of different criminals, before turning to a cell door and unlocking it.

"well, what do I owe the pleasure to be seen by the chief~" you say getting up from your bed and standing near the cell bars watching her lock the door from the inside. "nothin' just wanted to talk. I'm sorry I haven't seen you in a while, been busy" she said taking a seat on the bench Infront of your cell.

"I mean you've never really seen me" you chuckle, "get it. cus your, you know, blind. sorry." you still chuckle a bit before sliding down the bars. A small huff like laugh left toph as she rested her head on the bars, you sat there in a comfortable silence.

You perk up when she sighed, " hey m/n, can I ask you something?" toph asks turning to face your direction. "You know you don't have to ask, what's on your pretty ol' mind chief?" you reply, turning to face her as well, now sitting cross legged.

toph held a small smile on her face "what do you look like, well i know the basic structure of your face, but what do you look like. scars? birthmarks?" she asks, her eyebrows scrunched a little in the middle.

a bit taken aback you blink a few times before answering her. "oh uh w-well where do I start?" cursing yourself for stuttering, "your eye colour" she quickly replies.

"I have y/e/c eyes and y/h/c hair, I'm tanned and have a scar on my right shoulder from when I was a kid, my brother pushed me downhill and my torso snagged on a sharp rock, and it ripped me open from my ribs to my shoulder. nasty stuff that was." the feeling slight coming back to you as you described it.

"geez" toph replied, eyebrows now raised. "you've never told me about that one m/n?" she said crossing her arms. you laugh, standing up and stretching your arms. "yeah well I though you could feel it when you ran your hands up my back the last time you were here~" flashes of what went down ran through your head, almost every time she visits, you always end up in a make out, without fail.

"Now, you be quiet" she said flicking a small rock at your chest. you stuck arms trough the bars and pulled her close. "and i didn't feel a scar on you last time we met" she said leaning in close. "well~ maybe you could feel it better after i get out of this cell and with you in bed?~" she laughed and closed the gap between your lips. "Shut up!' she said hitting your chest through the bars smiling.

oh how bad I want to get out of here you thought, looking at her.

Golden Heart - Introduction

"I would think twice about putting your hands on my grandmother" Y/N shouts at the boy with the ponytail making her way through the crowd.

He pushes gran gran back towards the crowd where Katara makes sure that she's okay before turning to face you. You notice his façade falter for a split second obviously not expecting someone his own age but he can tell by the way you hold yourself that you are in charge around here.

Pulling himself together just as quickly, "I know you're hiding him" he roars again while blasting fire just above the villagers head.

You roll your eyes and cross your arms, "We're not hiding anyone or anything so I suggest you turn around and get back on that boat to wherever you came from" you tell him.

Before he gets a chance to reply, your brother comes charges at the fire nation boy who easily deflects Sokka's advances. Before Sokka even has a chance to get back up from the snow, Zuko's knocked off his feet by a gust of air and you can't help the smirk on your face seeing Aang has come back to help.

Aang and Zuko go back and forth before Aang asks if he will leave our tribe alone if he agrees to go with him. The grumpy teenager agrees.

"Aang you do not have to do this" you say stepping forward to put a hand on his shoulder so he'll look at you and you hope he can see on your face that you mean it.

He refuses much to Katara's dismay.

Gran gran and I walked over to where Sokka and Katara were gearing up.

"What do you two think you are doing?" She asked catching them by surprise as they looked at her stunned and trying to look like they were completely innocent.

She smiles at them. "You'll need these" and she holds up their sleeping bags. They smile before looking in my direction, "Y/N.." Katara starts.

"Don't worry, I've already packed mine" I tell them with a grin.

"What?" Sokka looks at me confused.

"You didn't think I was going to let you two have all the fun now? Besides, gran gran can keep an eye on the village for a while". A second later both of your siblings have engulfed you in a hug.

"Okay okay, we better get going if we're to catch up to that ship."

Katara looks over at the small canoe in the water before her eyes notice something else, "Appa" and she runs over to the bison.

Sokka sighs, "You just love taking me out of my comfort zone, don't you?" You chuckle and grab your brothers arm pulling him along after your sister, "all part of the adventure little brother" you tell him with a smile before getting onto Appa's saddle.

Forgetting your character is disabled isn't a "good representation" flex: Writing Disability Quick Tips

For a while, I was involved in the booktok and Tik Tok writing communities, specifically parts of the community focused on more diverse books and authors. During this time, I noticed a reoccurring pattern when people were highlighting stories featuring disabled characters, or even promoting their own books, and that was how often people would say "I kind of forget they have [insert disability here] because they're such a badass."

The intention behind this statement is (usually) good, with people trying to show that their disabled characters are self-sufficient and don't fall into the tired old sad/helpless disabled person trope, however, you can - and very much should - do that without erasing your character's disability. If you find yourself forgetting your character is disabled, or your beta and pre-release readers are commenting about forgetting it, then there's a good chance that's exactly what you've done - and as a disabled person myself, if I see that statement being used in your marketing in particular, it's a giant red flag and a sure fire way to make sure I give the book in question a skip.

Remember, disabilities (especially major ones) are a part of your character's identity, and they're important regardless of the character's personal relationship with it. Even if your character doesn't specifically identify with the label of disabled or doesn't really care that much, it's should still be impacting their daily life, even in small ways. If you're finding yourself forgetting about a major part of your character's identity, it might be a good idea to check and make sure their disability is having an impact on the character.

I see this comment most often with amputee characters, and to me, it's a pretty consistently good indication that the author has treated their character's prosthetic as a cure rather than the mobility aid it is. It's far from unique to amputees, mind you (I talked about this a lot when I was discussing the character of Toph from Avatar), but it's when I tend to see it the most. Remember that mobility aids and other forms of assistive technology and assistive magic (if it's a fantasy story) are just that: they're aids, they assist, they shouldn't be cures.

Of course, this wasn't unique to Booktok, I've seen it on nearly every other social media site with a writing and book-focused community at some point, but Tik Tok was just where I spent the most time and it seems to be where I see the most people specifically gloating about it.

Wait wait wait BLIND ZUKO?!?!?! Why is this the first time hearing about it??????????? This obviously a major error on my part…but I am little confused…what is a sensitivity reader? are they like a beta reader, but someone who belongs to the blind community(is even calling it a community OK I don’t know how else to refer to it😅)? someone to make sure that what your writing is accurate??? Please educate me!!!

Basically that, yep. Sensitivity readers are a reasonably common practice in Serious Face fiction (...among writers and publishers who care about getting things right), but definitely not common in fanfiction, so it's no surprise if you haven't heard the term before--they're people from whatever group who are good at helping writers spot and correct when they're using harmful tropes related to the group(s) they're a part of (and offering suggestions to make things read more authentically).

Since people tend to spin off AUs of my fics (which is awesome and continues up be encouraged), I am putting in an effort to not totally screw up the Blind Zuko rep. Of all fandoms, Avatar should absolutely be a place blind fans can find themselves represented in and welcomed by.

On a related note, insert PSA here encouraging all Avatar artists and rebloggers of Avatar art to write alt text/image IDs. They're quick to write and they mean the world to the people who need them. Do it for Toph.

Very true! It's crucial to remember to be accessible to your readers, especially the ones you're trying to represent - way too many times I've seen Toph fanart that's inaccessible to real life blind people.

I should be writing my fic, but I want to make something very clear...

Regarding my post about self-inserting...

I'm not going to judge anyone who does because we have all done it at some point in our lives. I probably sounded like a snobby writer back there about how self inserting was generalized with all shippers. That isn't the case. My problem was more about how the argument used in the screenshot was actually rude and probably racist. I don't know because I've never seen race as a problem for identifying with a character or even self inserting.

My point is going back to creative writing and character development... a character is written specifically to bring the reader into the world that character lives in. This is the foundation of world building and character writing. You can build a world as much as you want, but if you are going to understand it, you need a way in. That is the character. You see the world through their eyes. So, in a sense, you are living through that character. But, you are disconnected by the fact that it is fiction. It's not actually real. This is where escapism comes into play. That line is what separates you and that character. You are you.

This is not to say that you can't imagine yourself in Katara's place trying to make a relationship work with Zuko, but there is a line. It's actually therapeutic in a way to self insert. It's part of something called bibliotherapy, where writing fiction is used to help a person understand their problems, desires, identity, etc... it's a good way to find out about yourself.

When it comes to the Zutara discourse, there is a disconnect between those who do ship it and those who absolutely hate it. That disconnect is the assumption that self inserting is bad because it's dark and abusive and women (assumed) want to feel brutalized by an antagonist (who is not really an antagonist... more like the Anti-hero who is redeemed) of course, this is the generalization of a Fandom by other fans who don't actually know. I'm sure if I put a poll up and asked, we'd get many different answers... actually that might not be a bad idea.

But anyway, I hope you guys see my point.

I don't have any problems with how anyone chooses to see themselves in Katara, Zuko, Sokka, Aang, or Toph... or in any of the many characters of the show, but please stop with the assuming.

Because it makes an Ass out of you and Me.

Bad joke but you see what I'm getting at.

Requested by @mermaid-lost-in-a-sea-of-fandoms: i was wondering if you would mind writing an ATLA preference including at least Zuko, Sokka, Toph and Katara reacting to the reader crying out of nowhere cause she's been stressed and tired for a while

A/N: I added Aang because he also deserves some love, and because I’m so excited to write something for ATLA again, it had been a while! I’m so sorry that this happened to you, lovely, but I hope this preference helps and that you’re feeling better now!

Zuko

When you camped during the night, you started to grow anxious. An emptiness had settled in your chest, and you found yourself crying all of a sudden, in front of everyone. They were all very confused, but Zuko was the first one to speak up. He felt a lot of empathy for you and wanted to help you somehow. Even if he’s a bit awkward about it, he listened to you vent about how you had been very stressed and worried, and he stayed with you all night until you feel better. “What’s wrong, Y/N? Want to talk about it?”

Sokka

When you burst out crying unexpectedly, Sokka is a bit shocked at first, he doesn’t really know what to do. He clumsily pats your back as he hears you babble about how tired you are and how you’re constantly worried about your friends. In the end, though, he will start cracking jokes to hopefully get you to laugh, or at least to smile. Once you feel better, you feel good enough to laugh a little and it’s all the more heartwarming when his face light up after yours does. “It was Zuko, wasn’t he? What did he say to you, Y/N, want me to kick his ass?” “Stop, Sokka...” “See, but you laughed”

Aang

Aang doesn’t really know what to do or say, how to help you and comfort you. He’s a great listener, though, so he’ll intently hear you until you have emptied your mind and your heart and you start feeling better once that weight is lighted off your shoulders. After that, Aang would try to cheer you up by being his usual optimistic self, reminding you of the good things. “I’m so glad you’re feeling better, Y/N. Tomorrow will be better, you’ll see!”

Toph

Toph... isn’t very helpful at first. She kind of lectures you, telling you to step up and forget about all those things and to just get back on your feet already. It was her way of trying to inspire you, but it had the opposite effect. In the end, she would playfully punch you in the arm and tell you that it’s okay to cry, she just wants to remind you how strong you are and how you can get back up. “You can face this and anything that is thrown at you, Y/N, you’re badass”

Katara

Katara would probably be the best at comforting you out of everyone. She is warm, understanding and is a great listener. She’s a fixer, though, so at first it was a bit overwhelming how she’s constantly throwing solutions at you when all you need is for her to listen. Realizing this, she grows quiet and nods her head as you speak, and only once you’re done she would tell you about how things can improve. “Feeling better? Glad to hear it. Talk to us next time, Y/N, we’re here for you whenever you need us”
