Thoughts on toxic yuri?

One of my very favorite storytelling concepts, I love it when women make each other worse. <3

I do think it's important, for me anyway, to note the difference between a dynamic that's toxic in one direction versus something that is mutually toxic. The first one doesn't really interest me a whole lot, usually because it means one character suffers constantly without being allowed to do anything else--at the very least, it will come across as the more ""normal"" character not really being that into the relationship in question. I need BOTH parties to be unhinged.

The important thing for any fictional relationship (though we're specifying toxic yuri here, obviously) is that it's interesting. If there is no limit to what the women can do within a dynamic, then there are an infinite number of ways for that dynamic to go. And while you can learn a lot about a character through examining their values and positive qualities, you can learn just as much (if not more) by considering their flaws. And those flaws really come out in the case of toxic yuri; characters get to show the uglier parts of themselves in this context, which I am always a fan of. A fraught, complex relationship, when written well, can be a really great way to psychologically explore the characters: what inspires them to act this way? why do they think this behavior is acceptable? if they don't think it's acceptable, why do they keep doing it? what do they think about the concept of love as a whole? how far would they go for intimacy or to be understood? how do they view other people in general? and probably most importantly, what led to them developing the beliefs underlying their actions in the first place?

From a more "psychologically, why do people enjoy this" standpoint, mutual toxicity often goes hand in hand with extreme obsession, extreme jealousy, and a willingness to forgive a whole lot of horrible shit. Which, yeah, in real life you don't want to be in a relationship like that. But I think there's a lot of emotional resonance in exploring those feelings. The idea that someone will never leave you. That they think so intensely about you specifically that they'll break anything and anyone to stay with you. That even if you're the worst version of yourself, someone will still want you because that's still you. Someone knows exactly how to fuck you up because they genuinely understand you. Things in fiction that we would never want in real life can be incredibly interesting or even cathartic to witness from a distance. I think we all feel things that scare us sometimes (or even simply feel an innocuous emotion so intensely that it scares us), and looking at unpleasant feelings within fiction can help identify, parse out, process, and successfully cope with those feelings. And I think, at the end of it all, a lot of people want to matter to someone, in some way. It makes sense that some creators would take that concept-of meaning a great deal to another person, of affecting them deeply-to its absolute extreme through writing.

Like god damn, this genuinely feels like the type of toxic yuri you could only get from someone with an intimate understanding of the diversity of sexual interest to write 3 very different flavors of aspec character + 1 allo character and have their differing feeling of and wants towards sexuality blow up in each other's faces.

Like I'm only 8 chapters in and I already have so many thoughts on all of these characters.

Azuki being demi-coded and being unable to get over her sexual desire from back when she and Meguru were about to have sex to the point of making endless clay dolls of Meguru's body is already pretty strong characterization, but the extra layer of Azuki not really seeing herself as person as much as a "thing" for other people to use just hit extra hard with me as I often struggle with those feelings often as well.

Her obsessive devotion to Meguru even after they broke up feels less like romantic love and more like Azuki wanting to be Meguru's "thing". Meguru was Azuki's first actual friend who didn't treat her like an oversized gardening tool. The first person she genuinely cared for, loved and had sexual desire for.

Which makes the fact that the last time she saw her was when they were about to have sex, but Meguru noped out in disgust sting all the more.

Meguru is sex-replused but Azuki very much is not. Azuki sees herself as a thing but to be Meguru's thing she would fundamentally have to contort and break parts of what makes her who she is... And she would do it because after all

Meguru is a sex-repulsed ace who was going through a hard time with her parent's divorce and the sexual trauma from walking in on her dad's adultery when she befriended Azuki. Azuki was genuinely an important person Meguru loved and cared about who helped her through a hard time in her life

She did love her but... when she offered up sex to Azuki, hoping Azuki would say no, she had to confront the fact that Azuki did have sexual desire towards her which just caused all of her sexual trauma related to her walking in on her dad's adultery to blow up in her face right before she and Azuki were about to fuck.

Meguru wanted a version Azuki that was sexless but when she's confronted with the reality that Azuki did want to have sex with her, she left instead of trying to confront her trauma.

Maybe that was the right call for her in the moment, but it's clear that years later she's still refusing to actually deal with her trauma and instead has taken up a coat of puritanical disgust at anything remotely sexual.

"Azuki didn't actually love me, she just wanted my body" she tells herself, because actually dealing with the fact that she left someone who actually cared about her would be too much for her otherwise.

...And yet part of her still wants the Azuki she hanged out with, talked about anime with and loved again. That one was the real Azuki right? Not the one that was looking at her body with nothing but lust.

After all... Azuki is a thing.

Remu is a dollfucker.

That is to say she can only really feel sexual attraction towards and masturbate to dolls. Unfortunately for her, it started when she was a young child and having your own parents be disgusted at you for playing in a way that is nonconforming will fucking do a number on you.

I really hate how whenever someone says in passing that they dont like caitvi that people immediately translate that into homophobia—or more specifically lesbiphobia*( is that the way you spell it?) I think my personal dislike of caitvi (in arcane idc abt lol in fact I like it a lot in lol at least rn before the scrap the lore) stems from the fact both cannon and fanworks refuse to acknowledge or even play with the toxic dynamics that naturally stems from their relationship. Other than a very surface level, "you enforcers are all the same/don't understand" quips from time to time. I rarely see any works delve into the inherent power imbalances. The deep cultural and socioeconomic differences. The trauma and internal conflict from vi being, working around, and eventually becoming an enforcer. Instead, season 2 nullifies her past, her conflict—in fact almost all zaunites motivations and biases in order for them to become docile and sympathetic to not only enforcers but the uppercity as a whole. Genuinely feels like unironic copaganda/piltie support and as you should know it's a fuck pilties area over here. But I digress‐

In fact, I've seen them kind of enjoy that lack of nuance in their inherently kinda toxic relationship that has very real connection to police states, domestic abuse of police spouses, classist divides etc etc blaah blahh.
