A few common misconceptions and hurtful myths about the gods I worship:

• Demeter is not careless or selfish for reacting the way she did to the loss of her daughter. Grief, even amongst the gods, is an emotion so powerful that it causes us to loose control, and surrender to our own emotions. You would not blame a woman in grief over the loss of her child for having a mental breakdown. Also, I don’t personally believe that the plagues that befell Greece after these myths were written were caused inherently by Demeter, as agricultural disasters happened often, especially back before modern farming and cultivation knowledge, and it was if anything, a coincidence of timing which frustrated and worried men used as justification to attack and blame Demeter as a target of their angst, and a scapegoat to direct their suffering at.

• Poseidon wasn’t a rapist, nor was he inherently malicious or “evil”. Although he is most certainly impulsive and often aggressive, it is rarely in a malicious way, as many of the myths paint him as. I'm not a biologist either but I love this train of thought. I agree with you about the stalkers and cryptosuchus, and probably the bone sharks. However, I think the chelicerates are closer to shrimp than anything else, making them fancy crustaceans, or evolved from something like a crustacean, which would explain the horizontal tails without them having a terrestrial ancestor.

With sea dragons it's kind of hard to tell what their ancestry is because they have tentacles like cephalopods, and we have no examples of terrestrial cephalopods. Their upper body and arms definitely look like they belong to a vertebrate that evolved on land, but it's also possible that the sea dragon got its arms from a common ancestor with the sea monkey, and didn't have a terrestrial ancestor at all (note the sea monkey's vertical, eel like tail.) Actually, it doesn't make sense to me that they would have evolved on land, because I'm having a hard time picturing an environment in which an animal would evolve tentacles for locomotion without losing their arms as well, which are less adaptive for swimming.

The lava lizards are actually a good example of what I'm talking about. They very clearly have vestigial hind legs, which means they probably evolved on land at some point. But while they were losing their hind legs, their forelegs turned into clawed flippers. There's almost nothing leg-like left of their forelimbs. Why didn't that happen to the sea dragons, who have managed to not only lose any leg-like vestiges in their hindquarters, but also evolve tentacles? Like, they don't even have opposable thumbs to make retaining their arms an adaptive trait.

(Oh speaking of lava lizards, how the heck do they breathe? They don't have gills. They live way too far underwater to be able to surface for air, and they don't have nostrils. Do they have gills hidden in their throats or something? Like, what's going on there. I have the same question about the sea dragon and the sea emperor to some extent too, it's just that lava lizards are clearly reptiles with more familiar biology, so it's a little weirder.)

There's a couple more species I can think of that probably have terrestrial ancestors in addition to the ones mentioned: the glow whale and the frozen leviathan.

The thing is though, the planet is an ocean planet. It has very few landmasses for terrestrial animals to evolve on. There is like, one frozen continent at what looks like the south pole in the cutscene at the end of subnautica, which may or may not be the same as the frozen landmass you see in the cutscene at the beginning of Below Zero and you get to explore some of ingame. Did everything evolve in such a frozen environment? If not, either the planet used to be warmer so that continent wasn't frozen solid, or there was a period of time when the planet didn't have nearly as much water. The thing is, if the planet was warmer, that would raise the water level due to ice melting. There's also very few ways a planet can gain water. The one way I can think of off the top of my head is bombardment with comets. That could easily cause a global catastrophe. How the heck do they have so many animals with terrestrial ancestry? Are there landmasses hiding on the other side of the planet? Did they evolve as small species on warmer islands and get bigger in the water? I have so many questions.

Anyway, I have no clue what's going on with this planet.

Subnautica and Evolution

So I was bored a few nights ago and looking up stuff about fish (as you do) when I came across an interesting little tidbit about oceanic mammal tails versus fish tails.

As far as I know, all fish tails have a vertical orientation and swing left to right. However oceanic mammals with tail fins are horizontal and swing up and down. This is because when mammals originally moved to land, they developed spines that would support the up-and-down movement of their legs which were now directly underneath them. When some species moved back to the water, they kept this spine shape which resulted in tail fins that also moved up and down.

So what does this have to do with Subnautica? Well if you take a look at Stalkers, you'll notice they have a distinctly dolphin-like tail fin. And knowing that Snow Stalkers exist via Below Zero, it's not an unreasonable assumption to assume that Snow Stalkers are actually closer to whatever evolutionary ancestor the two split off from.

It seems to me that at one point, this ancestor moved on to land the same as Earth's mammalian ancestors did. It developed legs and the ability to breath above water. From there the evolutionary path diverged with some remnants of the species remaining on land and others going back to the water just like Earth's whales did; re-adapting to the oceans, possibly even with the need to breathe air which might explain the Stalkers being found in relatively low depth environments.

This got me curious and I started looking at some other Subnautica creatures.

Bone Sharks -- despite their name -- also carry a horizontal tail fin, unlike Earth's sharks and their vertical fins. However, their tails end in a much less "fin-like" standard appearance. It's more spiked then anything. Interestingly as well, they seem to have a set of gills directly behind their eyes as well as a set of nostrils or nostril-like indentations in front of their eyes.

What this suggests to me -- someone who is very much not a biologist -- is that Bone Sharks' ancestors also may have once lived on land, though much longer ago than Stalkers did. I think they are much further along in their evolution line, re-adapting to the water with the ability to breathe underwater. I think the horizontal tail fin and indentations in the skull are vestigial -- left over remnants from a time long past when they once walked along the ground.

The other three creatures I think once had a land-locked ancestor are: Chelicerate, Cryptosuchus, and Sea Dragon Leviathans.

Celicerates for similar reasons to the Bone Sharks, as it moves its tail in a mainly horizontal manner to move around.

Cryptosuchus and Sea Dragons for their functional limbs that, on Earth, are only found on land-based animals. Though I do think Cryptosuchus' ancestors were more like alligators then any mammal or mammal-like animal. And I don't think they were ever fully land-locked. It's more likely to me that they, at one point, lived a semi-aquatic lifestyle before transitioning back to a fully aquatic one.

Do I know anything about biology? No. Do I desperately want a biologist to tell me I'm stupid and all the ways I'm wrong? Yes! Oh my stars yes please! Let's talk about this, I want to know so bad

After Rome falls (finally), Apollo thought that women with deep sea, dark curls and sea colored eyes would finally be safe from a fate as a substitute for Loyalty.

Except Camp Jupiter, the Roman atrocity that rose to replace Perseleia's Camp, continues. And women with black hair and green eyes still remain a mark of status.

He can do little to protect these women from mortals- but he can cast a curse, as a God, as one whose sacred animal is wolves, that no Roman who survives Lupa will recognise these traits outside of their Camp.

For demigods, such as the daughters of Venus and minor God's who have the misfortune to bear these traits- he gives them his protection. A simple object, charmed to protect them from any association being made from their appearance to Nerio's.

He can do nothing for any child born within Camp Jupiter's borders, not if the parents won't protect their child, but he'll do all he can to protect the Demigods and mortal around Camp Jupiter.

The liwe and uraña, the megafauna of the Yutreiya archipelago (a large volcanic island chain near the center of the White Sea, homeland to the qilik-elowey Ulelilwa peoples). These are the two largest native land animals found in these islands, standing about waist high on a human.

The liwe is a flightless bird and the top land-based predator to be found here. Their ancestors were predatory birds who came to occupy niches as land based predators (with some members of the family specializing into insectivorous or partially herbivorous roles). Their wing are entirely vestigial, though retain some use in steering while at chase and in courtship displays- pairs will stand chest to chest and shake their wings at each other, and males will rapidly flap their tiny wings in continued display while mating, which is notably silly looking.

They act primarily as ambush hunters, as they have neither the speed nor stamina to capture a healthy adult uraña in an outright chase. Pairs mate for life and hunt cooperatively, with one typically driving prey to where the other waits in ambush. When hunting large prey, they typically attempt to injure the prey by slashing with their sharp beaks and kill with a crushing/piercing bite to the throat. Smaller prey is kicked and trampled until it can be dispatched with a bite.

The uraña has a superficially deerlike appearance, but is actually a highly derived lagomorph that has specialized in cursorial grazing and browsing niches. Their ancestors were likely hares (or harelike animals) who distributed through parts of the White Sea via rafting events and over land bridges during periods of lower sea levels. They have entirely lost the hopping gait of their ancestors and run like deer, but retain some recognizably hare-like traits. Males competing for access to mates (and females competing for herd dominance) will stand on their hind legs and box each other with their hoof-like claws. They give birth to precocial young (usually two at a time) who can stand and run shortly after birth.

They live in fission-fusion herds of up to 200 (though generally less) individuals for protection against predators. A herd at large is mixed sex, though most interactions outside of the breeding season are homosocial. Females and their young form bands within the interior of the herd, and will drive out adolescent males, while adult and adolescent males form bands that patrol the outside of the herd and watch for predators.

Females maintain strong dominance hierarchies within their circles, maintained with ritualistic displays and brief bouts of boxing. Male bands do not have strong dominance hierarchies, though they compete heavily during the breeding season. Male uraña have two distinct morphs in terms of size and reproductive behavior- larger, higher testosterone males attract and defend harems during the breeding season, and will spend these months tirelessly chasing off competitors, stealing from rivals, and attempting to prevent females from straying, all while barely eating. Smaller, lower testosterone males spend more of their energy courting singular females and/or wooing them out of their harems via shows of strength in boxing matches, attempting to mate with as many as possible during the breeding season without monopolizing access or picking fights with their larger counterparts. Harem males monopolize most of the breeding, but the yearly strain of defending large groups of females often results them having shorter lifespans (or being picked off by predators in a weakened state post-breeding season). Boxing males expend far less energy in the breeding season, and as such often live long enough to sire many offspring throughout their lives. As such, both strategies are reproductively successful and result in/reinforce this distinct morphology.

Liwe were part of a larger family of flightless birds once found on these islands, but the unintentional introduction of rats by the first Ulelilwa settlers contributed to the demise of most of this group (as well as a great variety of flying birds). Liwe eggs are too large and thick shelled for most rats to consume, and they have survived and thrived while the rest of their relatives are extinct on all but the most isolated of islands.

There also used to be a much larger species of uraña (about the size of a key deer). These were the largest animals on the islands and had no natural predators (save for liwe occasionally taking their young). Their population was already under pressure or locally extinct in many islands due to decreasing landmass in rising sea levels, and was fully driven extinct by its grazing lands converted to the raising of crops and ant-farming by Ulelilwa settlers. The smaller uraña occupy more generalist niches and adapted well to these pressures, with most of their populations not only surviving but exploding in size with the gradual extinction of their larger relatives.

I’m not quite sure if there’s some kind of horned slug somewhere so her animal traits kind of got grabbed from yaks and leafy sheep sea slugs (… Pretty abstractly! Her parents probably individually had those traits and she inherited them!)

Hello I was wondering if you folks had any idea for mobility aids specific to different fantasy races, specifically mermaids because I really like drawing those. But you know with the mermaid example it wouldn’t make sense to give them a cane they don’t have feet to walk. Or like what mobility aids might help a fairy who has trouble flying or something.

This is a fun question. I always love it when fantasy series show how disability works in their world, especially when it involves showing mobility aids.

For species with animal-like traits (such as a mermaid's tail, a fairy or angel's wings, or a centaur's horse body), you can always take inspiration from mobility aids/assistive tech designed for those animals.

I'll include a few of my own ideas under the cut and hopefully folks can add on in the notes!

Braces

One tool that could be interesting for mermaids that have trouble swimming is some sort of adapted brace for their tail.

While the brace shown below is for legs, I think a similar version for a mermaid tail could easily be adapted. These braces could help with supporting a tail that has muscle weaknesses or otherwise needs some help.

Prosthetics

Prosthetic limbs can be helpful for amputations and other limb differences -- and not just for arms and legs!

They can also be used for species with tails (such as dragons and mermaids) or wings (such as fairies, angels, and dragons).

There are also plenty of real-world examples to take inspiration from -- such as this dolphin with a prosthetic tail [Link].

Depending on the type of features your species has, you can usually find a real-world equivalent that would fit them:

Dragon wings are similar to bat wings.

Angel wings are similar to bird wings.

Fairy wings are similar to butterfly wings.

Mermaid tails are similar to dolphin tails.

Sea monsters can be similar to octopi, turtles, and a variety of different sea creatures.

Wheelchairs

Wheelchairs are another aid that can be helpful for a range of creatures including mermaids, centaurs, and more human-like species such as satyrs.

The first thing that comes to mind when talking about mobility aids for mermaids is Finnegan Wake from Monster High. He's a mermaid that uses a manual wheelchair due to a motor disability in his tail.

Because they have four legs, wheelchairs for creatures such as centaurs, unicorns, and dragons can be a bit more complicated.

For horse-like creatures like unicorns, centaurs, and pegasi, there's not really a real-world equivalent but you can take inspiration from wheelchairs designed for other four-legged creatures such as dogs.

This post [Link] also shows some great examples of centaurs using wheelchairs to support their front legs. Although the post talks about them mainly in the context of broken limbs, amputations, and old age, they can also be used for centaurs with muscle weakness in their legs, chronic pain, etc.

Flying Aids

For characters that can't fly (while the rest/most of their species can), I think there's a few different ways to handle this.

One of my personal favourites is Scootaloo from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Scootaloo is a pegasus with underdeveloped wings, which makes her unable to fly. Instead of flying, she uses a scooter to keep up with other pegasi from the ground. She is also able to get some pretty great air time with it too!

With this, I think exploring different ways of flying could also be cool.

Maybe an angel has partial paralysis or weakness in their wings that makes them unable to flap them like other angels so they mostly just glide.

Maybe a fairy character has underdeveloped/smaller wings and has to flap them more often than other fairies, which makes them fly more like a hummingbird.

I just think it's cool to explore different ways of moving -- with or without mobility aids.
