The trees lumbered across the field.

It was a weird thing to watch. When a tree settled to rest or sniff at an interesting crocus, she could almost believe that it had been rooted to the spot for years; then the huge body would raise up on spidery roots and trundle forward with stupid placidity to follow the herd. When they all had settled to rest in the morning light, it was like the field had been turned into a misty woodland in seconds.

A sapling bounded up to her and sniffed at her wrist before bounding off again, spindly roots kicking with delight.

"It's pretty simple work," said the farmer. "We let them out to get some fresh air and sunlight, check them for blight. Every so often we have to lay out some manure, but that's pretty much it."

She watched the sapling. It stumbled on its own limbs and limped into the shade of its mother.

"It's pretty similar to raising cattle," said the farmer. "We raise them up for a couple years, and when they get big enough we take them down to the slaughterhouse and have them butchered."

"Wouldn't you send them to a logging mill or something?"

"Nope."

A chickadee whirred through the air and lighted onto a branch.

"There's good money in it, too," said the farmer. "There's a lot of demand for certain cuts of tree meat."

"You mean wood?"

"Nope."

There was a blur of branches. The tree ate the chickadee.

SOME OF THE OLDEST LIVING OAK TREES

This Pedunculate Oak at Blenheim Palace is thought to be the oldest living oak tree in the UK and is about 1050 years old.

The Great Oak in Pechanga, also known as Wi’áaşal by Pechanga locals, is estimated to be 2000 years old and is recognized as the oldest singular oak tree in the world .

Kongeegen (the King Oak) is a renowned oak tree in Denmark. The tree has an estimated age of 1500–2000 years, and may well be the oldest living oak in northern Europe.

The Angel Oak Tree is Charleston, SC is estimated to be in excess of 400-500 years old.  It is considered to be the largest Live Oak Tree east of the Mississippi

The Major Oak is a large English oak (Quercus robur) near the village of Edwinstowe in the midst of Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire, England. According to local folklore, it was Robin Hood's shelter where he and his merry men slept. It is about 800–1,000 years old.

this may come off as nitpicky but please. even magic does not look like dragon age magic in veilguard. it's too sci-fi. where are all the dark mysterious ruins with runes and veilfire that make you wonder about what they once were. why am i suddenly removing force fields with lazers. (it came to me suddenly that you also can't tell at all by looking at the ruins in arlathan what these buildings used to be for. because surely it wasn't just to randomly store a chest or a sole bridge-summoning crystal). bellara is also a mechanic and not even a little bit mage now (see all the "tinkering"). and why does minrathous have a speaker system. surely there are ways to depict an oppressive magical state that do not require putting modern technology into your fantasy world. although i see how it may become a problem when you forget what even phylacteries are (you have to destroy lucanis's "blood" instead while breaking him out). and it does look flashy that all the companions have at least some kind of magical abilities and that magic is used creatively, however i'm sorry but thedas is also not that magical. in previous games even when warriors or rogues got special abilities, they were tied to them being unique to the character (eg fenris) and you still could have regular people in your party, most rogues/warriors that you would see fight have been regular people, and this makes the impression of the presence and use of magic in thedas drastically different from the previous games.

somehow the exaggerated design instead of realism has been less jarring for me than this storytelling emptiness of the design in the end. but buildings float now i guess
