TREE GUY: when we first met in week 1 of lockdown, I never knew he was naked!

WEEK six of lockdown. Almost everything, apart from hospitals and supermarkets, remains closed. Businesses are in free-fall with many trying to evolve to survive but with no customers, products, transport or even premises, it’s an uphill struggle and the latest news is 40 per cent of companies will close.

We can’t go out except for our permitted 1-hour exercise close to home or to shop for essentials. But that’s fine. We’re well and are making the most of the down time. Distancing measures at stores is more rigorous but people are still ignoring the rules. I scurry in and out as fast as I can and even faster than usual last Friday when I realised I was sharing a narrow aisle with an old boy whose grimy, perforated underpants were – like the 75%-off Easter eggs – on full display. This was because his alarmingly-stained trousers were belted, not around his waist, but the top of his thighs. A soiled mask dangled from his chin. I felt for him but at the same time thought that there was no way he’d washed his hands recently. Ruuuuun!

We feel lucky, though. We have some work and a garden and one another for company. We’ve had time to talk, plan (well, as much as you can) and spend time together as a family far more than we normally could, so that’s more than enough.

Time is weird, day names don’t matter much and we only know it’s the weekend when Steve comes out of his home ‘office’ smiling.

We’ve been doing laps of the field for 42 days now; we met Tree Guy (pictured above) on the very first day. Along with things in my garden, I’ve watched him and a nearby oak-tree branch change as the weeks pass. He now wears a cape of leaves as does the branch. We’re feeling fitter from all the walking and my garden is flourishing, as though there nothing wrong with the world.

Boris has returned to bluster and bluff once more but people seem less convinced by him and are beginning to question poor decisions, late timings and the continued lack of PPE for bus drivers, teaching staff, care workers, shop workers and the likes.

The death count remains high, 21,000 plus, and there are an alarming number of NHS worker deaths which are to be compensated to the tune of £60,000 each. I’m sure their families would prefer that they’d been protected in the first place.

And it has begun to rain for the first time in ages. Could be a long week.
