While the Unity thing is raging, I just remembered a question I had about software tools in general.

How do software companies have the right to dictate that their free "personal edition" software can't be used to make something for profit?

In the case of Unity and other game dev stuff it can make sense if it's ultimately their software doing the work and the user is just feeding it images and instructions, but i'm talking about say, photoshop.

An image is made with photoshop, not by photoshop or of photoshop. So what right does adobe have to say you can't make art in photoshop and then sell it?

Do they actually have that right, or has that sort of been asserted and not been strongly challenged? Could someone let you borrow a paintbrush to make a picture, and then dictate how you're allowed to use that image? I wouldn't think so, so why should software tools be different if they're not actually part of the final product?

The free trial of clip studio paint is such BULLSHIT man. What the fuck do you mean I can't save any files until I buy it. How am I supposed to trial the goddamn thing if I have to do everything in one sitting. I have never once had a free trial do this shit in my life. vs same photo (just slightly cropped) after a few minutes of wiggling the sliders around in my phone’s built-in photo/video editor

the sliders are the true heroes of making pictures closer to reality! exposure, contrast, and saturation are heavy-hitters but honestly i just go in there and wiggle all the sliders around until i like what i see. don’t let your phone convince you you can’t capture at least some of that magic, it’s just tucked in some slidies so get slidin!

You know that thing where you see a gorgeous view (left) and try to take a picture of it, but your phone camera is a joyless fucking nihilist who refuses to see the beauty in anything and only sees this (right)
