Soul Ties- Chapter 2
Chapter 1 Chapter 3

Today was soccer tryouts. I always loved soccer, finding it satisfyingly stimulating due to it being a high intensity contact sport. And to make it all that much better, I was going to be able to spend more time with Natalie.
It was the last class of the day, art, and I was hurriedly scribbling the final details of the cracked flower vase Mrs. Bennett decided to use as the highlight of our five minute cooldown. Writing my name at the top of the page, I give into my racing thoughts letting my brain play out every scenario that could happen during the two hours of tryouts.
Soon the last bell rang, and I quickly stood up slinging my backpacks over my shoulder and placing my drawing in the turn in tray before rushing to meet Nat by the gym lockers.
“Hey Nat.” I said coming up beside her as I pulled my gym clothes from my bag. “Hey yourself.” She said back smiling, before following up teasingly with, “So you going to prove you can actually play and not just talk smack.”. “Oh yeah! If we are partnered up together you’re totally going down!” I say taunting the older girl. “Sure…” she trails off with a playful eye roll.
As we were getting ready to head onto the field two girls walk up to us. The first is tall with long, dark hair while the other is a bit shorter with curly blonde hair and glasses. “Who’s this?” one of them asks. “This is Ellie.” Nat says easily. “The Ellie?” The tall girl questions with a knowing smile on her face. “Oh, you mean the girl you’ve only been taking about half the summer.” The curly blonde jokes. Then it clicks these are Nat’s soulmates, she’s been talking about them all summer! “Hi,” I begin before continuing with, “you guys must be Lottie and Misty, Nat’s told me a lot about y’all.” “Oh has she?” Lottie says with a smirk on her face causing Nat’s cheeks to pinken slightly. Turning to me both girls introduce themselves properly before Lottie ask us to join her in warming up on the field.
Once we get outside, we waste no time in joining the growing group of girls on the field doing stretches.
After a couple of rounds of stretches, I feel less stiff and nervous, easily becoming excited when Lottie purposed the idea of passing the ball to warm up our legs.
Soon, Lottie, Nat, and I are passing the ball around in a leisurely manner, making small talk as we go. When I suddenly hear Nat say, “Here comes our captain.” Causing me to follow her line of sight to a group of girls walking towards the field. Immediately, I feel warm and my body begins to feel light and floaty, sending my brain goes into overdrive making me feel almost invincible. “Shit.” I mumble under my breath but not low enough where the other girls can’t hear me. “What’s wrong, already got on one of their bad sides?” Nat jokes elbowing me. “Uh no, actually, I think my soulmates are over there.” I say watching as the two girls whip their heads back to towards the group. “Holy shit!” I hear Lottie say excitedly. “No way.” Nat adds in immediately after her. “Which ones?” Nat asks in a whisper. “I don’t know, I kinda looked away pretty fast.” I say bringing my hand to rub at the back of my neck in embarrassment. “I think it’s Tai and Van.” Lottie says to no one in particular, “Look at the way they keep glancing around.” Risking a glance a quickly follow Lottie’s gaze, my eyes landing on a tall, curly haired girl with darker skin and an equally tall red haired girl with freckled skin. And that’s all it took before I knew I’d do anything for them.
I spent the beginning of tryouts on the bench. Not because I sucked or anything, I just happened to be the only new person to try out for the team. So Coach told me to wait as he spilt the girls into last year’s JV and varsity before having them go head to head in a mock game. In the end, Coach decided to leave the teams as they were last year, telling me that I would be playing each member of JV first to see if I would make the cut.
Tryouts were going perfectly, soon I had beat out every JV player and now Coach Martinez was pinning against the varsity girls. I was pretty sure I was going to get a spot on Varsity, but I knew if I could beat one varsity girl, I was practically guaranteed a spot.
Lining up on the field, I’m met with a girl around my height with long dirty blonde hair that’s pulled into a low ponytail. “Alright Brooks,” Coach says catching the attention of all the girls on the field, “if you manage to beat Allie, you will have secured your spot on varsity for this season.” he says earning a couple of cheers of excitement from the girls.
Coach tosses the ball high in the air. Allie sits still watching as the ball falls, while I take a couple steps back to give myself a better view of the ball and Allie. As soon as the ball collides with the ground, Allie and I are on it like cats on mice.
Allie manages to gain control of the ball, starting decide how to maneuver the ball around me. She juggles the ball quickly between both her feet but she’s not moving forward, so I wait, wait for her to tire slightly before I jab my foot out, the tip of my cleat sending the ball behind Allie finally getting this game under way. I sprint hard and fast towards the ball not even sparing Allie a glance as I hear the gasps from the girls crowding the sidelines. Reaching the ball, I dribble up the field quickly, dodging Allie by stopping the ball and passing it around her back before making a B-line towards the goal.
Just as I go to line up my shot I feel my feet get knocked out from under me as my body hits the ground hard and I tumble a couple feet from where I stood. I hear Coach’s blow his whistle loudly, yelling at Allie about how that could have really hurt me, before giving her a red card.
I waste no time. I jump to my feet, bouncing slightly to shake off the pain in my ankle. I take my place, lining myself up at couple steps to the right of the ball in order to take the PK. I bounce on my toes before taking two steps towards the ball sending it spiraling right into the corner of the goal, securing my spot on varsity.
Cheers ring out across the field. Turning, I see Natalie running to me and throwing her arms around me in a hug, “Guess you weren’t just talking smack.” she said laughing. “Told you I wasn’t.” I said back.
As the cheers settled down, I heard Coach begin to speak, “Before we call it a day, I want one more varsity girl to go up against Brooks here. Any takers?” “I will.” I hear from the crowd of girls watching as the same dark skinned girl, who I had only hours ago come to realize as my soulmate, volunteers herself. “Let’s see it then.” Coach says as we take our places.
The ball goes up and comes back down just as it did moments ago when I was playing against Allie, but this time I’m not met with much resistance as I settle the ball, not giving it a chance to bounce before I began to veer right only to be met with a flurry of cleats beating against mine. She’s ruthless I think to myself, as I finally resort to shoving my shoulder into the taller girl before me. Big mistake. The mark on my arm erupts with a warm heat spreading through my body like a forest fire. We both pause. “It’s you.” she breathes out, clutching her arm in the exact place where her mark is etched on my skin.
“What’s going on?” Coach asks not even a second later. “They’re soulmates Coach!” I hear one of the girls, probably Lottie, screech excitedly. Coach says nothing, deciding he’s perfectly content to let us test the waters on our own time. “Hi.” I say breaking the silence. “Hi.” she says back a smile forming on her face. “I’m Ellie.” I say extending my hand towards her, “I’m Tai.” she says back as our hands meet and the warmth rushes back over me before dimming slowly down and disappearing all together. Tryouts end soon after that.
Back in the locker rooms everyone takes their time changing as we wait for Coach to print his final decision and tape it on the door of his office.
I just finish tying the laces of my old grey converses when I hear someone walk up behind me. Looking up I’m met with the same beautiful red head that I saw on the field. “Hi.” she says her voice inviting and buoyant. “Hello.” I say back matching her tone as I stand to my full height, leaving me only an inch or so shorter than the girl in front of me. “I’m Vanessa, but everyone calls me Van.” she says sticking out her hand towards me just as I did to Tai minutes ago. “I’m Ellie,” I say before quickly adding, “well technically Elenor but nobody calls me that.” Placing my hand in hers, I feel the warmth rush through my body once more, but this time it’s different. With Tai it felt electric and strong, but with Van it feels comforting and steady. I relish in the way in the warm slowly melts away from my body.

Thanks to everyone who has applied to join the ASR team!
We're still looking for any pencilers, inkers, and colorists who'd be willing to help out!
In addition, for those planning on applying as a writer, we have a few new guidelines for you to follow!
For writing tryouts, please send us a comic script around 5-8 pages long. The story must primarily feature characters canon to the Archie Sonic Post-Reboot series, and taking place in that specific continuity. A sample script can be provided if needed.
We will be judging scripts based on the quality of the story, characterization, readability, grammar, and technical performance. We also want to tell how well you understand the Archie Sonic Reboot world and can accurately write for it.
Tryouts will remain open to allow everyone to submit under these guidelines. Remember to send in your submission either on our discord server or email. And let us know if you have any more questions. We look forward to seeing what you all make!

Middle School Monday: Tryouts by Sarah Sax
Now that she’s in middle school, Al (aka Alexandra) wants to continue playing baseball. But she’s always played on coed teams before, and now her only options are to ask for permission to play on the boys’ team, or give up and not play at all. Al learns that she has the right to try out for the boys’ team, so she decides to go for it. The good news is that she gets on the team, but the bad news is that she gets more attention than the other players, and some of her teammates start resenting her.
Can Al turn this attention around, and change it from something annoying into something positive?
Tryouts is the second book in the Brinkley Yearbooks series (Picture Day was the first), and this is another good choice for readers who enjoy heartfelt and thoughtful realistic fiction stories about characters who are trying to find their voice. FYI, “Tryouts” refers not only to Al but to multiple characters who are each figuring out which activities they like the best, and learning how activities can help to connect people with their friends and families.
Give this book to older kids and younger teens who enjoy books about sports, friendship, and connecting with other people.

Club Tennis Tryouts - How do they work?
This past week, USC club tennis had their tryouts to join the team! We had tryouts on Wednesday, Thursday, and a makeup tryout on Friday morning. I was there about half the time on Wednesday, and the full time on Thursday, and was 1 of the 2 people there on Friday (of exec). Also, if I didn't mention before, I hold the Treasurer position on the USC club tennis executive team!
How did we run them? We had three courts. For Wednesday, we had one court of just everyone playing some points or games as they waited their turn, and the other two courts had club tennis members hitting against our potential new members. Those two courts were being watched by a couple of exec members, who would assign everyone a different color in the excel sheet - for example, light green meant "heck yes!". On Thursday, we had less people, so we had two courts that we weren't watching and one court for the actual tryout. Friday morning was for the few people who couldn't make the other two days, and I was hitting with them on just one court while another exec member wrote notes.
When you first walk up, you had to scan a QR code and fill out some information to register on this new platform (similar to Garnet Gate), as well as give your contact information to another exec member. Then, you were good to go hit and warm up a bit with everyone else.
I wasn't too involved with the actual judging on Thursday, and did my best to be involved with the 'fun' courts and talk to everyone. I also helped organize those courts a bit - they tried to separate the two courts into guys and girls, and we were not about that. The lines to hit for those courts were also quite messy, so I had to direct them into straighter, more distinct lines.
Here's a little, slightly blurry screenshot from the club tennis instagram, where you can see me being pretty excited! This was before we forced the guys to mix with the girls, so there weren't a lot of people on this court. There were a lot more on the other court, out of frame.

Tomorrow, we'll send out the emails for who did and didn't make the team. I'm very excited for the new members coming to practice on Monday!

I may very well throw my hat into the ring! I assume I'll be in competition with hundreds of other fans and professional VA's. Yet, there's no harm in trying, right?
Are you going to be bringing any more people on board for season one when it's time for production? 🥰
Yes! We'll put out calls for portfolio/reel submissions when the time comes!
