🖥️ Evolution of The Sims technologies

This is information by conversation from 🌎 #ts3-beta-chat channel in The Sims 2 Beta Discord Server about on which engine each game of The Sims series is developed and what technologies are used by each game of the series.

Just to offer clarity/summarize the above:

1. TS1 is built on top of MFC (Edith) and Gonzo/Rizzo. It uses a renderer which utilizes a mix of SC2K, SC3K, and Quake3D code.

2. TS2 extends TS1’s behavior engine but replaces the renderer with a new 3D engine, although it still uses the Gonzo development framework. It’s pretty much TS1 on steroids internally.

3. Sims 3 is overhauled and doesn’t use any of the tech from TS1/TS2, although it retains several assets ported over. It uses a new behavior engine (no name, but it uses traits/commodities instead) and Renderware (plus other stuff like Speedtree) for the 3D engine.

4. Sims 4 is once again built on a new engine, in anticipation of the game being an MMOG instead of single player. It loosely extends GlassBox from SC2013 (dubbed SmartSim now) but they pretty much have to overhaul it to remove the multiplayer aspect, so it really ends up becoming its own thing. It doesn’t reuse anything from TS3 except the concept of the traits/commodities behavior engine being used for SmartSim.

I could only think of three, two of them being more so "after the fact" rather than actual, initial inspo.

Conchita Wurst: Drag persona/alter ego of Austrian singer Tom Neuwirth, 2014 ESC winner. Many people thought he/she won due to the statement but legit good song if you ask me. The gender non-conformity and the persistence to keep facial hair cus it looks good even with an otherwise much more femme persona. I mean, for real, facial hair can work like friggin contour for people who can grow it/ Flo has a bit of a babyface without and I've had plans to make some more fancypants facial hair in the genre of the ITF one they've had for ages for variety. Beards and sparkly dresses look good together, period.

Rapunzel. Idk just vibes. The glowy golden hair contributes, as well as the generally-cheery but at points very dark and turbulent/moody attitude. Also, Flo's also quite sheltered (not Stockholm-syndrome sheltered ofc), growing up with plain supportive moms in an affluent small mountain village, they'd be terribly ignorant about the outside world if it weren't for them seeking out thrills and travelling independently.

The only legit, beforehand character inspo: Swiss Singer Nemo (another ESC winner, 2024, I voted for it several times cus I love me some rapopera). I am Cis myself and don't know many NB people, most NB people I come across in rl or online being assigned female at birth and being more tomboyish than that or otherwise feeling uncomfortable about being seen as a girl, not the other way around with someone who's assigned male at birth being more femme etc and I wanted to explore that in a character - so yes, despite me seemingly randomly deciding "hey flo's non binary now" from one chapter to another, the seed was there for months before. Their hardcore acrobatics on stage (singing like that while jumping on a moving disc) also contributed to me making Flo an acrobat.

I balanced out the lack of people with my lengthy explanations :P Anyway that's it, it's interesting to do but really, I'd say e.g. Finn has zero character inspo cus I just think of what sort of sim I want, make them, and develop their story throughout. Flo's a huge exception with there being at least one beforehand legit inspirational celebrity/character.

I don't think I've ever put more focus on Albert, did I? So, for this ask, everything will be about Albert Lucio!

Albert had a sister named Arabella Lucio. She was kept within their ranch, never allowed to leave. Arabella had the same powers Priscilla has, but her sister was unable to take full control over it. Because of that, his first mission was to neutralize his sister.

Albert accepted to be Priscilla's mentor and handler, believing that if he did this right, he doesn't have to kill another child. He sees her as his daughter.

Albert was against Tony. He had subtly shown his (past) dislike to the then-rogue mage to his superiors, especially when he married her the first time. He never voiced this out loud to her though. It's her canon event after all.

Orientation: James often makes a point of distinguishing between romantic attraction and sexual attraction. That's not without reason. While he's definitely not asexual, James struggles so much with romantic feelings that he's often wondered if he may be aromantic. It's all a bit more complicated. But we'll get to that.

Random Fact: Originally, and by that I mean, at least six real life years ago, the plan was to have Leona be the "exception to the rule." James the casanova, who never fell in love, would finally meet the one girl who found her way into his heart. But it felt wrong. This wasn't his story. It annoyed me to no end and was actually part of the reason I went on a hiatus that ended up lasting five years. But then it was James who inspired me to come back to my Sims and my story after five years away. Suddenly his story seemed so clear to me I couldn't wait to bring it alive. However, it's also his fault all those plans have gone out of the window and been replaced by an entirely (or mostly) new storyline. His character is stronger than I am, haha.

1328 – Day 3 – Townsend Farm (2/2)

It is on another day where most of the family is not on the farm that Hawise, Sir Robert’s maid, comes to visit.

Malcolm has been thinking about her more often than he’d like to admit since their meeting a few months ago. They may have only spoken to each other for a few minutes, but she has certainly made an impression on him! She doesn’t seem like a girl that is easily cowed, yet kind enough to risk a reprimand to keep a stranger out of the rain. And she has the most enchanting laugh.

He is working outside, fixing a loose board on the fence around the chicken coop, so he sees her immediately when she walks up to the house, looking around with interest. Only when he calls out her name does she notice him at all.

She waves to him and walks up to the fence. “Well, I seem to have found the right farm. That’s a relief!”

“Were you afraid of getting lost? It’s not that far.”

“To you, maybe. There isn’t so much empty space in town where I’m from.”

He can’t help but smile at that. Somehow, he is happier to see her again than he had expected, despite thinking of her so often. “But you made it, that’s what matters. Do you have a message from my uncle or aunt?”

“Yes. He wants your family to know that your cousin Annette is betrothed to Alexandre de Bellefaye, my lady’s nephew. And he wants to know whether you have some more honey you could send, against payment.”

Malcolm is rescued from the very astonished and utterly foolish repetition of what she has just said – the news that his Annette is to be married, to be precise – when he hears the door to the cottage open and sees his mother walk out. He clears his throat. “My mother is the better person to ask about the honey. She manages our stocks.”

Their introduction takes little time, although Malika seems pleased to meet the girl her son has been talking about so much. She promises to talk to her husband about the honey, but can’t give her any yet, because they don’t know how much of it they’ll need for their nectar. What surprises her at first is the news about Annette’s upcoming marriage, but she soon nods.

“It makes sense, I suppose. They Crawleys are a well-regarded family. Please pass along my family’s congratulations to your master and mistress, Hawise.”

Hawise promises to do so. They chat for a little while more, before Malika peers at the sky with narrowed eyes. “I’d gladly invite you for a small meal, Hawise, but you better head back soon if you want to reach home before dark. Or better yet, Malcolm should accompany you.”

“Me?”, Malcolm says in surprise. But his mother only smiles.

“You always talk about being a man soon, don’t you? And I wouldn’t like anything to happen to young Hawise here because she’s out alone after dark.”

The question whether anything might not happen to him while walking alone after dark dances on his tongue, but he can guess what his mother is thinking. He knows those roads and has walked them late often. Hawise doesn’t. Besides, he shouldn’t complain about an opportunity to spend more time with her.

Humility makes her refuse at first, but she gives in so quickly that he suspects that she doesn’t want to walk alone– either because she is afraid of being on her own or because she too doesn’t want to say goodbye so soon. He can’t tell, but hopes that it is the latter.

After that, Malika leaves them to go back into the house to tend to…something or other. Malcolm isn’t really paying attention, if he is honest. He smiles at Hawise, who looks rather pleased herself.

“Your mother seems to be a very kind woman”, she comments.

“That she is”, he agrees. “Unless you meet her in one of her stubborn moods. It drives my father nearly to madness sometimes!”

She laughs about this, and he feels his heart flutter in his chest at the sound. To make sure that he hears more of it, he proceeds to tell her anecdotes about what his mother has done – he leaves out her history with the earl’s brother, of course, but his mother has gotten her will in enough other things. Not in the least the fact that she was born a serf and is now trying to make her family into prosperous nectar-makers.

Hawise has to wipe her eyes from laughing so much by the time he is finished. “You know, the more you tell me about your mother, the more I like her.”

“I’m glad to hear it”, he says, genuinely happy. “I can tell you more about my family while I escort you home.”

They don’t wind up talking much about his mother or the rest of his family. Instead, he asks her questions about her own life. They have talked about some of it when they first met, but she tells him more now; about working for the earl and countess, and about her charges now. His little cousins.

“You like children, then?”, he asks.

“Well enough”, she says, with a little smile. “They are sweet girls and easy enough to handle. Although Miss Jehanne isn’t even a year old yet, so she is a little difficult sometimes. And you?”

Her question isn’t unexpected, but neither is it comfortable. If he were honest, Malcolm would have to admit that he doesn’t want children of his own anytime soon. Possibly never. He may have been raised in a loving home, but he can’t imagine being surrounded by screaming, needy little sims for years. And more than that, what if he does wish to leave the farm at some point? Having small children to provide for would only make that harder. How could he justify taking risks if those might mean his family’s ruin, instead of just his own?

But saying so would be an affront to the Watcher. It is Her wish that they have children to people Her world. He doesn’t wish to displease Her.

So he clears his throat and decides on evasion. “I’m the oldest of five children. I think I’ve had my fill of infants and toddlers for the time being.”

She chuckles at that. Obviously, his tone has been playful enough. They continue chatting, until they reach the ford in the river. She turns to him then, the light of the last rays of the setting sun in her eyes. “It isn’t far to Sir Robert’s home from here. I think I will be fine on my own now. But thank you for escorting me this far. It was very chivalrous of you.”

“I could escort you the rest of the way”, he offers immediately. He doesn’t want her to leave. But she smiles and shakes her head.

“You don’t need to get your feet wet for that. I’ll be alright, I promise.”

He doesn’t want to seem overbearing by arguing further, so he nods. “If you’re sure. But…this has been…nice. I’d like to see you again.”

“You would?” Her face lights up at that, and he is quick to nod.

“Yes. Very much so. Because, uh…I…you are a very charming girl, and I rather…That is…”

Words suddenly fail him. He likes her and he enjoys spending time with her! She’s lovely, and kind, and funny, and his heart races when he’s with her! That shouldn’t be so hard, should it? And yet, he seems to be unable to say it out loud!

The situation isn’t improved by her starting to giggle, but his embarrassment eases a little when she lowers her hand and smiles at him. “I like you too, Malcolm.”

“You do?”

“I do”, she responds, with a smirk. “When you’re not stumbling over your own tongue, you’re quite nice to talk to.”

Her words make his heart race even more, but oddly, he doesn’t feel as scared. Instead, he only feels warm. “I’m glad that my charm isn’t absolutely useless on a girl like you.”

She raises her brows, stepping closer. “A girl like me?” Her smile is almost a challenge, but this time, he doesn’t back away from it. Instead, he steps closer himself. She doesn’t retreat, only looks at him expectantly. It takes him a moment to realize that she is waiting for his answer.

“Clever, feisty, beautiful…”

Her smile widens, but before she can respond – and his courage abandon him – he leans forward to kiss her quickly. It isn’t one of the long, passionate kisses he has seen his parents share, more just a brief press of his lips against hers, but even that brief contact sends sparks over his skin.

And to his great relief, he sees that she is equally affected when he pulls back, a rosy glow on her cheeks and a wide smile on her face, that says more clearly than words could that she is just as pleased with this turn of events as he is.

I briefly considered having Malcolm go look for it but decided against that in the end. But I'm sure Edith would have!

Random Facts

Iris was 16 and a half when her parents were killed in a fatal car accident. She's learned to hide her true feelings behind sarcasm. The deeper she feels about something the more she hides behind sarcasm. She has little to no empathy for her older brother, Phoenix. Why can't he just get over it? It's ridiculous to be afraid to go outside afterall he could die in his sleep from carbonmonixide poisoning or fry to a crisp the next time Rowan asks her to cook.

Now that she's out of school and undecided about college she's planning on going to Isla Paradiso for the summer. She's been going for the past few years since she was 15. She loves the sun, the beach and most of all surfing. Not even a shark almost taking her leg off at the knee has dampened her enjoyement of the sport even though the scar is horrific!

Besides surfing she enjoys reading fantasy novels and playing the drums. She taught herself how to play the drums when she and her friends thought they'd be the next big girl band but she can say it now they weren't that good. But she knows good writing though and her brother, Rowan is good. She takes pride in telling people that he's a published writer, an author. Yes she takes full credit for his success because without her prompting him his stories would still be hidden away inside his journal.
