A Brief Alterhuman History

Here is a quick recap of the history of the alterhuman community, from 1972 onwards.

1972-1990

Communities of beings who believed themselves to be elves began to appear in the 70s. In 1990, the word “Otherkind”/“otherkin” is used for the first time in Elfinkind Digest, coined to include non-elf “others”.

1990-1999

Alt Horror Werewolves (AHWW) newsgroup is created to discuss werewolves; it became a place people felt safe to discuss identifying as an animal. Those in this group referred to themselves as “weres” and “lycanthropes”. The original users of this group became known as “greymuzzles”. Later, “therianthrope” would be coined as a more general version of lycanthrope. In 1999, “phenotypes” was used to discuss what “type” of therianthrope someone was.

In 1994, the first “howl”, was organized by a were in Ohio for members of the AHWW community to get to know one another. After this, several “howls” would be held multiple times a year, both by the AHWW community and other therian communities.

For otherkin, gatherings (or “gathers”) would be held by a variety of ‘types including elves, dragons, and unicorns.

2002-2004

The seven-pointed star (septegram) was used as a symbol to represent otherkin. Later, the theta-delta was created to represent therians.

Fictionkin was first used in 2004 on LiveJournal. However, for many years after this, “otakukin” and “mediakin” were the primary terms. “Fictionkin” was not the primary term until the 2010s.

2010-2011

The subreddit r/Otherkin is created. In 2011, the otherkin community blossomed on Tumblr. The community was reportedly focused on activism and validation and the term “non-human” was in use at this time. “Otherhearted” is coined on The Daemon Forum in 2011.

2014-2017

“Alterhuman” was coined by phasmovore on Tumblr to describe those who “differ from the common societal use of humanity”; it is now seen as an “umbrella term for otherkin, therians, fictionkin, dragons, vampires, plurals/systems, copinglinkers, and otherhearted individuals”.

Copinglink was coined by who-is-page on Tumblr in 2016, who defined it as “a nonhuman identity which is consciously created”.

In 2017, “Otherkin” was added to the Oxford dictionary.

2020-2024

The now widely used alterhuman flag was created in 2020 by Quiznoscoyote on Twitter and consists of green, white, and purple stripes with the theta-delta and septagram symbols interlocked.

In 2024, “holothere” was coined by Defrostedvertebrae on Tumblr to describe physical nonhumans.

30 Day Fictionkind Challenge: Days 11-25

11). Have you ever met other fictionkin? In real life or online?

Yes! I have a group of online friends who are fictionkin, as well as people who I’ve met through forums and social media. Real-life though I’m not sure, I’ve had friends who claimed they ‘kinned’ characters but never really elaborated on that.

12). Have you ever met canonmates? In real life or online?

No canonmates, but I know a few sourcemates online. I don’t really put much weight on either of these things or look for people to fill character niches.

13). Have you ever met doubles? In real life or online? How did it go?

Yes, online. I don’t like it very much but I’m not going to attack someone for being the same guy as me. I’m uncomfortable with it but I’ll just remove myself from the situation. If they’re a dick to me about it that’s their problem I don’t really care.

14). What are shifts like?

We have a similar personality as it is, I see myself as Vergil but if he had better morals and was ever so slightly nicer to be around, so I don’t really get distinct mental shifts. I have phantom shifts of his Devil Trigger form though. Horns, clawed hands and feet, tail, and mandibles are the main parts I feel.

15). How do you deal with kin for fun?

If they’re not being rude to me for taking ‘kin seriously, I have no issue with them. I keep to my own space.

16). What are your thoughts on symbols, flags, etc.?

Not for me personally but if it makes other people happy go for it.

17). Does fictionkinity connect to spirituality for you?

A little. I’ve never been that into spirituality for myself, but some things do point towards that explanation. I don’t believe it’s reincarnation in my case but misplaced soul perhaps? It’s definitely possible.

18). Does fictionkinity connect to neurodivergence for you?

Yes, I think a big part of my fictionkind identity is that it lets me see the world through the eyes of a character and not through my own. It gives me a grounding force to hold onto, someone to see myself as. Not in a copinglink way, but it does help me to cope, it’s hard to explain.

19). Do other people notice your similarity to a character or species?

Yep. I’ve been compared to him a few times, either in physical appearance or in personality. I think most people who know him and know I either am him or like him see me as him.

20). How do you express your fictotype? Clothes, merch, cosplay, maybe even name?

We have the same name, not really used that much irl (other than close friends) but it’s my main name online. Other than that I don’t really do much? I have the same white hair, and I wear more blue than usual now I guess.

21). What’s something about the fictionkind community you wish was different?

There was a post about it a while back. I wish we had more serious writing and experience sharing on tumblr rather than just kincalls and moodboards. I also wish there was more of an active fictionkin presence on forums so there’s more threads and discussion and questions being asked.

22). What’s something about the fictionkind community that you appreciate?

How different all of our ‘types and sources are, and how different and unique our experiences can be. I enjoy hearing about other people’s thoughts and feelings on their fictotype and their memories or things they know about their source.

23). How do you approach consuming your source? Analytically, obsessively, casually, reluctantly, etc…

Obsessively, ‘tis the autism. I want to know everything about it and play every game a million times, I want to become an expert and an encyclopaedia of knowledge even if I don’t enjoy it or parts of the source upset me.

24). What’s the worst anti-fickin take you’ve seen?

I don’t know tbh, that kind of thing doesn’t really stay in my mind.

My kintypes are from highest to lowest are a canon divergent c!Karl who helped create the in-between and got stuck there (And the in-between never really acted like,, Scary or strict or anything like how it acts in canon, it was always really nice and comforting), Ranbob, a canon divergent Technoblade who ended up making amends with Tommy after doomsday and went back into retirement from what I know, the only synpath type I have is Sucrose (Genshin Impact), i'm kinsidering DreamXD, might possibly look into whether i'm a synpath with Meika Hime or not at some point?? Not sure rn but i've always gotten those vibes, and I am copinglink with Ghostbur.

You seem perhaps, scholarly? You likely get bored easily and have very strong interests. These don't necessarily have to be fields of study, but could be media. I also imagine you pick up on literary themes and character traits easily.

I think you probably feel powerless in day to day life, so you're drawn to scenarios/stories with positions of power. Ranbob, techno and dream XD are all characters who have a degree of control and confidence. And the Dsmp, in general, is a story about power. And all of these characters (with the exception of hime) are secretly quite anxious. (Well, probably. Don't know about ranbob)

Thats not to say youre an evil person, like ranbob, I actually think you are quite pacifist judging from your techno and karl. I think you try to be helpful to others around you and you make a conscious effort to be kind. I do imagine you perhaps overpreform your kindness to make others around you comfortable (from ghostbur and hime).

what's the definition of alterhuman :0? also do you have any good collections of alterhuman flags?

so alterhuman is an umbrella term for any identity/experience that is alternative to the typical human experience. it encompasses otherkin/fictionkin, therians, otherhearted/fictionhearted/animalhearted, copinglink/otherlink/fictionlink, synpaths, and more i’ve probably forgotten. many nonhuman system members also consider themselves alterhuman. it’s a pretty large community!!

@kin-flags is a pretty good archive - though most of their content is more kin-related, they do have some general alterhuman flags! bmpf also has an alterhuman tag.

(note that i don’t support everything on these blogs, because i personally am against celebrity/other public figure factkin, but they do have good fictionkin/otherkin flags)

a specific type of power is needed, it needs to be a strong power (like. REALLY strong) and needs to be able to manifest physically ! (like creating objects from nothing)

my power can't manifest physically so it can't kill a soul (all mind does is affect the mind, basically just making someone hallucinate, I don't like to do it much)
