Book 8 - Portugal and the world, from the Second World War to the start of the 80s - internal options and international context.

Part 1 - The birth and afirmation of a new geopolitic world.

By the end of the Second World War the Allied powers got together twice, in the conferences of Yalta and Potsdam. In Yalta the Soviet-Polish border was defined, the division of Germany was established, the date for the reunion to create the United Nations was chosen, and it was established that the USSR would oversee Eastern Europe. In Potsdam, the zones of occupation dividing Germany and Berlin were defined, the German war criminals were planned to be put on trial on an international tribunal(the Nuremberg trials), and the division and denazification of Austria was also defined.

Even after the complete failure of the League of Nations, the idea of an international organization that focused on maintaining peace and security still remained, and so the United Nations was created. Under the UN's founding Charter, it has as main goals maintaining the peace, develop friendly relations between countries, develop international cooperation, and function as a harmonizing center.

While the Yalta conference guaranteed that Eastern Europe would be granted freedom of self-determination, in practice there was nothing that could be done to stop the Soviets from imposing their rule, establishing multiple communist states. The new Soviet area of influence was described as an "iron curtain" by Winston Churchill. In response to the spread of Communism, the United States declares the Truman Doctrine, by which they would work to contain and prevent the spread of communism, by leading and suporting the free world. To support Europe in recuperating from the Second World War the Marshall Plan was launched, giving funds to any European country that asked for it (for a more efficient distribution of funds the OECE was created, its like the COMECON).

In response the USSR proclaims the Jadnov Doctrine and launches the Molotov Plan, put in practice through the COMECON, to help recuperate Eastern Europe from the Second World War.

With this, the Cold War has officialy started, split between the American Bloc(made up of NATO and other alliances established) and the Soviet Bloc(made up of the Warsaw Pact and other alliances established). Throughout the whole thing espionage was increased, sentiments of fear and hatred to the oposing side were spread, the arms race begun, and each bloc attempted to show off their superiority, in the olympics and, most notoriously, in the space race.

To the West, Germany stopped being seen as an enemy but as an important ally against communism, so the Allied zones of ocupation united and formed the Federal Republic of Germany. Considering this to be a violation of the established treaties, the USSR in response creates the German Democratic Republic in it's own zone of ocupation. In an attempt to kick the Allies out of West Berlin, Stalin attempted to block all ground pathways to the city, but the Allies responded by creating an aereal bridge, delivering supplies by plane, and soon enough Stalin gave up, but later on Nikita Kruschev will build the Berlin Wall.

The Western democracies were predominantly social-democracies or christian-democracies, with policies establishing welfare-states. The first 30 years post-war the West lived a period of economic prosperity, known as the "Thirty Glorious Years", characterized for having a consumerist society.

The Eastern soviet democracies followed the Soviet economic model with economic planification. With them they were able to quickly industrialize, and even reaching growth rates higher than capitalist countries. However, the big focus on heavy industry made it so that the quality of life did not improve. Economic planification also led to economic blocks, since theyd limit themselves to only reach the established goals, and never go further than that, stagnating the economy.

After the Second World War, many independence movements across the European colonial empires sprung into action due to a variety of reasons. The war was seen as a "fight for freedom", and many colonized peoples participated and did many sacrifices, and so believed that freedom should extend to them too. The war also exposed how fragile the European powers had become, unable to defend their colonies (such as France, who lost indochina to Japan). Besides that, there was pressure from the USSR, USA and the UN.

But even after they got their independence, third world countries still saw themselves dependent on their old overlords, with their natural resources exploited by foreign companies. This new system became known as neocolonialism.

loonaverse theories .. there's quite a bit but here r the ones on the top of my head that i use for this project! since I'm talking about base loonaverse theories im using the base names. Also this ended up quite long so

#1 Hyunjin (Dan-bi) was part of OEC

Being seen in Girl Front etc... i think this is widely accepted iirc. specifically the Primary Odd Eye Circle with her, Kim Lip, and Jinsoul. i just like the amnesia trope ngl and (LVRB INTERPRETATION) her figuring out her important past as a guardian when Hana has tried to hard to keep her away from that.... yay being a bit too protective of your loved one you erase their memory and shun her from her previous best friends (OEC) to keep her out of harms way but instead instilling a sense of ennui and anxiety into her 🩷 Hana doesn't know much about how humans work and Dan-bi is along for the ride

#2 Vivi rescued Jinsoul from a basement

Ok i admit i think this was supposed to be an inside joke (see https://youtu.be/OtNlb86wY38?si=yE1Zp6pzrgtWM479) but i think it's a fun dynamic! adopted sisters who end up in conflict + a "malfunctioning" darker guardian that Hana did not manage to take care of well enough ... this is also in my head because of the Everyday I Need You MV where Jinsoul and Vivi r tgt. im now noticing my lvrb interpretation is barely things from "canon" but in my defense there's barely A Canon so many interpretations r possible

#3 LOONAVERSE Vivi dies (and becomes an android)

from her android-ness in Love & Live <- flashback from New and EILY where she is more human! i THINK this is widely accepted...? the point of contention is how she dies. i just love a good murder mystery and Vivi figuring out her past alongside Hyunjin and I personally love a story of someone tragically losing their agency and getting it back. Transgenderisms and such

#4 LOONAVERSE Haseul is trans

read the let me in lyrics i remember there being a slideshow about this theory on tumblr years ago and that has stuck with me ever since. in my interpretation Hyejin is transmasculine and basically embraces their own masculine presentation and figures out their gender identity, breaking free from the strict perfect Asian eldest daughter role he felt he was meant to have. projection i suppose. only core thing about this is Birdseul that she kills but i do what i want. also i her loonaverse story can absolutely be read as a transfeminine story as well but as a trans guy myself i don't feel i can tell that story as well as a transfem person can but id Love to see that interpretation as well. Loonaverse haseul is just transgender

#5 LOONAVERSE Jinsoul kills Vivi (Masterminded by Olivia Hye)

The point of contention! who killed vivi! i chose the cop out aka Olivia plans the killing to get revenge on Yves and Jinsoul carries it out. in LVRB Sabrina kills Feifei out of jealousy of her spending time with Eve (my emotionally unregulated queen) and manipulated by Lilith but ends up in immense grief when actually carrying out. Then Sabrina uses her mechanical engineering skills to bring Feifei back as an android and give her everything she wants, pink hair, partially a deer. felt there was more potential to thiss

this theory is because of the similar colours between the 2 units! I think it's a pretty well known theory iirc :p

Part of LVRB's story that Hana wants to control test a world that mimics Earth (hence Mobius Strip Earth version) and a realm that she tries to make devoid of rife and struggle (Eden). Hence as a control she basically puts clones in both environments! she doesn't know how bad human experimentation is yet sorry guys. there r many different versions of this theory but my ver is:

Hana // Eve (yes she clones what she thinks she is like ok she's just a silly girl)

Alice // Lilith (which is why Alice was the only one able to reach and understand her in the end and why previous OEC failed to stop her causing Hana to carelessly time loop)

Hye-jin // Faith

Feifei & Ha-Eun // Marie

Marie is 2 ppl bc Hana fucked up + Hye-jin's grief about themselves was so intense that the universe took a little colour from Feifei to make Ha-Eun to support Hye-jin :-)

Ok that's all i can think about rn but for fun here's a semi-popular theory that I choose to reject for this retelling

#0 Vivi was in yyxy

the most simple explanation that i rejected this is that I want the drama of Eve falling in love for a human girl (Feifei) and helping her learn about herself outside the oppressive institution of Eden 🍎 and Lilith knowing this and stripping Feifei of her humanity. Like separated by two different worlds LET'S GO!! and a more personal one is that i don't think there is enough evidence to hint to this besides her being with Yves in MVs

#0 Ok another one: Vivi has an odd eye

this is kinda a lie because she does have an odd eye in LVRB because when Sabrina has a mental breakdown after killing her and rebuilds her into an android -- Sabrina blesses her with part of her power in order to keep her safe from anyone, especially Lilith. Hence the superspeed and not needing sustenance or air to stay alive. but otherwise this theory is from her blue eye in Love & Live which is just a robotic thing 2 me... besides that she doesn't have much association with Odd Eye powers besides Jinsoul.

for my fav subunit, honestly its always been hard for me to choose between odd eye circle and yyxy but i'll say OEC just cuz they tend to have a lot of my favorite songs, mvs, etc (also my mom's bias is jinsoul so i gotta represent ✊) lore-wise though my fav is yyxy

yes ive been following the new groups and solos and everything! not nearly as close as i did with loona but i try to keep up with them. i love them all a lot and im very proud of them ^_^ its been so nice seeing them be able to flourish after leaving BBC. i mean there's still been problems ofc but.. its the kpop industry 🤷‍♂️ my fav post-loona releases are def <Dall>, TTYL, and I Did !!!

There was this theory which assumed that the original Odd Eye Circle were Kim Lip Jinsoul and Hyunjin (instead of Choerry). Not gonna go into detail cause im sure that most lorebits know about it already. And well - the teaser is made of colors with such lighting - Choerry in blue, Lippie in red (or pink to be specific but gonna call it red for the sake of the theory) and Jinsoul in yellow. It would have made more sense for Choerry to be yellow (knowing her connection with Hyunjin) but it isnt the case.

And we know Jinsoul isn't the nicest character in the Loonaverse. Because of her Choerry was able (or forced) to get teleported to Cosmos (or whatever you call OECs realm) through the cherry she placed on a cake. That might explain the presence of color blue in Choerrys photo. As for Jinsoul - maybe she did something so Hyunjin was forced to stay on Earth? And that where her yellow comes from? It may be a stretch but hey! Its just my theory. And it would make sense for Lippie to keep her color, since I think she was the first girl to get her odd eye, which started the OEC in general.

TLDR; colors in the teaser tell something about OECs origins? perhaps

It wont be as complicated as the color theory (flashback to that one loonaverse infographic). I think all props are most likely just symbolic.

All I could get from it is that Choerry is DEFINITELY covering her odd eye - she's the only one in the teaser to do that. Also shes the only one with a diamond instead of a glass ball. Maybe it has something to do with her secondary color being white? And white light getting diffused into other colors through e.g. prisms? Might be reaching again. But it would mean her being the key to the whole story, helping to originally unite all the 12 girls - which I think is a beautiful symbolism.

And just all of them holding circular things in general - might be their representative shapes? Representing the 3 moons yall know the deal.

I really don’t like this question, well not the question itself, a lot of people really do piss me off with this.

I personally seen people saying “oh Loossemble is better than Artms.”

Like they’re literally just different units of a group, yes, I’m a little delulu for believing that Loona is still existing.

Also it’s not really fair for Artms because they never debuted as a full group yet.

But with the content and music both groups have dropped, I do prefer to listen to OEC than Loossemble.

It hasn't been the century of humilation for a long time. China is a global superpower. The united states is also the second largest exporter and china is either 2nd or 3rd largest importer. this argument is incredibly weak.

Dengists frequently accuse the so called ultras of being defeatist, that in our hearts the true Crime of China is it's success past the most elementary phase of revolution and it's genuine development. This disguises their own portrayal of China as a weak beaten dog backed by Western imperialism into a corner. Take the sand out of your eyes and stop applying Sino-nat century of humiliation logic onto the second largest world economy.

Talk about a ‘US alternative to the Belt and Road’ is, in my opinion, mischaracterised. Near-universally, it rests on the assumption that the US’s depiction of the BRI - as a simple Chinese-imperialist counterpart to its own historical debt-trap neocolonialism - is accurate, and as such cannot actually deal with the reality of the situation.

The BRI, existing as it does in reality, has many concrete impetuses: it provides land routes for Chinese trade, avoiding western sea-power; it weakens western countries geopolitically; and it develops the global south. These last two are important. China’s specific position as a global south nation, as an exporter (rather than an importer, as with the west) means that it stands to gain from any development of the global south - the US, the world’s largest importer, has the ability to sanction or otherwise trade-restrict nations by simply importing from elsewhere. China, the world’s largest exporter, cannot develop too greatly, cannot climb up the value chain and increase its standards of living, its wages, or the US would simply move production to somewhere less developed, somewhere cheaper - which it broadly has done for low-value-added manufacturing, most cheap goods aren’t produced in China any more. However, if the global south as a whole develops, if not just China, but all the myriad exporters increase their standards, their wages, then there is no alternative, and that development continues.

It might be obvious already, but the US and China stand on opposite sides of the question of development. China stands to gain from increased development, and the US stands to lose. In fact, as the US’s extraordinary wealth is drawn from the exploitation of these global south nations, their dependency on the US and its ability to hold their economies hostage, any increase in the strength, development, and autonomy of global south nations is a direct blow to the US geopolitically and economically. Not only that, but increased development and autonomy lead to trading networks and institutions not directly controlled and managed by the US, i.e. of alternatives to the US, and when given the choice, most won’t choose neocolonialism. Any US investment in infrastructure and development would only be investing in an alternative to itself, in giving the nations it enslaves autonomy, something categorically against the material incentives of the continued survival of the US. China and the US are not simply recolours of each other - China takes the stand of the global south because it is in its material interests to do so, because it is a global south nation.

The US can have no Belt and Road of its own - which is why more funding has gone directly to ‘countering the Belt and Road’ and anti-China propaganda than to any proposed ‘alternative to the Belt and Road’. The fundamental difference is that while China can and does work towards solving the problems facing the world and itself, the US does not and cannot - because it is the problem.
