This concerns Huxley to no end, so to keep him grounded he'll come up behind Damien at random times and murmur the time and day in his ear. Its developed into an affectionate habit and he does it even now despite Damien being much less harsh on himself.

Up until meeting Freelancer and the crew, Caelum had never properly written anything before in his life. One of the oldest orders with still living representatives, Rhynchocephalia is composed of one remaining species: the Tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus) of New Zealand.

Tuatara are greenish brown and grey, and measure up to 80 cm (31 in) from head to tail-tip and weigh up to 1.3 kg (2.9 lb). They have a spiny crest along their back, especially pronounced in males. They have two rows of teeth in the upper jaw overlapping one row on the lower jaw, a unique feature among living species. Their teeth are not replaced, and as they wear down, older Tuatara have to switch to softer prey such as earthworms, larvae, and slugs, and eventually have to chew their food between smooth jaw bones. They have no external ears, but are still able to hear. Their “main” eyes can focus independently and have good color vision. Tuatara also have a parietal eye on the top of their head, visible only in hatchlings as a translucent patch. After four to six months, it becomes covered with opaque scales and pigment. The parietal eye has its own lens, a parietal plug that resembles a cornea, retina with rod-like structures, and degenerated nerve connection to the brain. It may be useful in absorbing UV rays to produce vitamin D, as well as to determine light/dark cycles, and help with thermoregulation. Tuataras mainly eat invertebrates such as beetles, weta, worms, millipedes, and spiders, but will also prey on lizards, seabird eggs and chicks and, on occasion, smaller tuataras.

Their lower body temperature makes for a slower metabolism, and slow growth, taking 10 to 20 years to reach sexual maturity. Females mate and lay eggs once every four years. Males do not have a penis, and instead mate via a “cloacal kiss”, like many species of birds. Birds and Tuataras are the only reptiles known to reproduce like this. Female Tuataras lay eggs with soft, parchment-like shells. She will lay 9–10 eggs on average, back-fill the nest and guard it for several days before abandoning the eggs to their long incubation period, which takes 11 to 16 months. The sex of a hatchling depends on the temperature of the egg, with warmer eggs tending to produce male Tuatara, and cooler eggs producing females. During their first 2 vulnerable months the hatchlings are diurnal, hiding under logs and stones, to avoid being preyed on by hungry nocturnal adults. Within a year they learn to burrow and become nocturnal. The young Tuatara will continue to grow larger for the first 35 years of their lives. Their average lifespan is about 60 years, but they can live to be well over 100 years old, and possibly up to 200 years in human care,

Despite only having one surviving species, rhynchocephalians were once much more diverse and widespread. They evolved before squamates (lizards), with the oldest record of the group, Wirtembergia, dated to the Middle Triassic (around 238 to 240 million years ago). Rhynchocephalians had achieved global distribution by the Early Jurassic, and were for eons the world's dominant group of small reptiles. Many of the niches occupied by lizards today were held by rhynchocephalians during the Triassic and Jurassic. However, today’s Tuatara emerged in the Early Miocene, around 19 million years ago.

One of the largest known rhynchocephalians was the herbivorous Priosphenodon avelasi. Priosphenodon lived in Middle Cretaceous Argentina and could reach over 1 metre (3.3 ft) in total length. It was the most abundant terrestrial vertebrate in the Candeleros Formation, and the only herbivore found there.

Tuataras are threatened by the egg-eating Polynesian Rat (Rattus exulans), which was introduced to the islands by the Māori. They were wiped out from the main New Zealand islands before European settlement, with populations persisting on 32 rat-free, off shore islands. Attempts to re-establish a breeding population on the New Zealand mainland have had some success. However, climate change may pose a new threat, as Tuatara have temperature-dependent sex determination. Higher egg temperatures lead to males, and as global temperatures rise, more males than females are hatching. Current solutions to this potential threat are to selectively remove adults and incubate female eggs in captivity to then be released.

Tuataras are currently considered “least concern” (ie not at risk of extinction), but their status as a relict species grants them protection and dedicated conservation efforts. Plus, their slow rate of growth and reproduction would make recovery very slow if there is any population collapse. If we lose the Tuatara, we also lose our last living link to an entire order of Triassic reptiles.

the garden behind the presidents mansion was beautiful, no doubt about it. coriolanus snow married his wife back there and he watched her from the window of their bedroom as she worked in it in all her free time and whenever the uv was above a 7.

he insisted he hire a gardener to “protect her pretty hands” but she declined over and over again. it was her outlet. her one “real” hobby that didn’t involve hiding away in the grand library coriolanus built for her.

large green bushes she trimmed so delicately and the stone path she’d managed to put in place her self. orange, red, pink, and yellow flowers everywhere with small blue ones trickled without. coriolanus had put a picnic table in it where they ate on occasion.

the only thing she didn’t like was the fence that guarded it to keep people and cameras out. it wasn’t very pretty, but as first lady secret services insisted, and so did coriolanus. it kept her hard work from public eye and left it only to be seen in photos inside magazines that didn’t do it justice. but the fence seemed to have failed.

“hmm,” she hummed gently to the kitten. she sat in her lap at the piano, mrs snow’s fingers gently playing soft chords as she stared down at her. “what about… lorelei?” the kitten stood and did a little spin bringing a laugh out of her. “you like that?”

“no i don’t. why can’t we?” she moved out from his touch, holding the kitten up to his eyes. “please, coryo?”

“no,” he swallowed, doing his best not to give into her temptation. they couldn’t have a cat. it didn’t seem… scary to him. not presidential, not like the pet of a man who led a country and 12 districts.

but his wife was persistent. she frowned up at him, holding the cat to her chest as she purred. “coryo,” she whined. “look at her. she’s just a baby. her mom was out of sight, i looked, and she already likes me. she even picked out her name.”

“i said-”

“please?” she gave him her best puppy eyes, her free hand on his chest.

coriolanus bit the inside of his cheek before sighing. “i guess.” he stumbled back as his wife pulled him into a side hug, kissing his cheek over and over again. red lipstick prints covered his face as she offered him the cat which he took with a small smirk. “what name did she pick?”

“lorelei,” she smiled.

“hm,” he nodded, holding the creature awkwardly. “i like it.” after a few moments he looked up. “you’re impossible to say no to, you know that?”

his wife only smiled, placing a hand on his shoulder. “you love me.”

“you’re a master manipulator and i’m an easy target or i love you, call it what you want.”

“i’ll call it you love me,” she said, standing on her tiptoes to kiss him softly.

“then i guess i’ll call it that, too,” he said, his arm holding her close to him as the pair smiled at the new member of their family.

Pitcher Plant (Nepenthes mirabilis) under ultraviolet light

Much like flowers, many carnivorous plants utilize ultraviolet light (UV) reflectance patterns to lure insects. Although an abundant component of sunlight, UV is invisible to humans but it is highly conspicuous to the insect eye. Here at nightfall, a UV torch reveals a normally hidden fluorescence of blue light on the pitchers of Nepenthes mirabilis. Although this fluorescence itself may not be strong enough in the day to attract insects, its presence shows patterns in UV reflectance which may guide prey to the nectar-rich portions of the pitcher, such as the peristome and underside of the lid. where r gets bored watching rafe and his friends play golf

(sorry if this is bad or inaccurate 😭😭 when i go to the club i also do just sit there and look pretty i never actually pay attention on how to play golf fr 😭😭)

you sat in the buggy inspecting your freshly done nails, with many thoughts running through your head and you were insanely bored: what colour should you get done next time?; what food will you get from the club afterwards?; what should you wear tomorrow?; when will rafe be done with playing golf for the day?. the last one was especially heavy on your mind. it was a lovely day out and the uv index was high, and there was a light breeze in the air- perfect conditions to add to your tan. however, rafe had other plans for you today, he made you come and watch him play golf with topper and kelce. you knew you didn’t actually have to go but how could you say no when rafe swooned you over when he said, “y’know i can’t play without my pretty girl there, your my good luck charm” and that’s how you ended up bored in the buggy.

rafe had yet to notice your bad mood but topper caught on immediately after walking back after his play. as rafe stepped away after swinging and stood next to topper, topper asked, “is your girl okay? seems bored” before walking away from your boyfriend for his turn. rafe turned around to face you and lifted his eyebrow, which was his silent way of asking if you’re okay. but you didn’t give him the answer he wanted, instead you huffed and lightly rolled your eyes at him. as he chuckled at your behaviour and started walking towards you he shouted back to his friends, who were waiting on him to play his turn, “give me two seconds boys”. being the stubborn girl you were you refused to look at the boy looming over you, but rafe grabbed your jaw with one hand and forced you to look up at him, “whats up with you, huh?” but again you just huffed, “nah, none of that now, talk to me baby” unable to resist your boyfriends charm, you told him honestly, “so bored rafey. s’not fair we always have to do what you want. i don’t play golf, it’s so boring for me to jus’ watch you” you whined. rafe just started back at you with a plan forming in his head, “come on get up gonna teach you how to play. you gonna stop whinging if i do?”

reluctantly, you followed after him as he dragged you to where he put his golf ball and he shoved his club into your hands. he stood behind you and adjusted the club into the correct position as best as he could as it wasn’t the right size for you, when he was happy with that he said, “show me your swing babe” and pathetically you did, you were sure a four year old could do a better job than you. to make matters worse you could sense rafe smirk and suppress a laugh. trying to wiggle your way out of his grasp you whined, “don’t laugh at me rafe! s‘ not funny, i’m really trying.” he pulled you back into the original position, “ ‘’m sorry baby. promise i won’t anymore” with a kiss to the side of your head, “need to fix your stance” he muttered while kicking your feet more to the side, “and bend your knees slightly” he put some of his weight onto you, to get you into the position. for innocent people walking past, this would’ve looked very perverted, and topper and kelce laughed from a distance at the scene, clearly enjoying watching you struggle and rafe bend you in whatever way he wanted. you scowled at them and rafe guided your focus back to the task at hand, “ignore them baby, focus on this, it’s jus’ us” and with rafes assistance you swung and actually managed to hit the ball, though to your disappointment it didn’t go far at all. this made the two boys laugh even harder and a chuckle slip from rafe, causing you to storm back to your original spot in the buggy, “ugh, just take me home rafe! now!” and as rafe made his way over to you, he gave his friends a look that said “cut it out” and they followed after him. kelce was the first to speak, “better luck next time girl” and topper said, “yeah, y’have good form” you could tell they weren’t being sincere and this only added fuel to the fire but rafe was quick to extinguish it, “how about i take you to lunch and then shopping? as a sorry?” you tried to keep the mad act up but a smile crept onto your face, “really?” you asked meekly. lowering down to your eye level rafe said, “of corse baby, anything for my girl” you squealed and wrapped your arms around rafe. how could you ever say no to him?
