WHAT IS THE POLARIZATION OF A VACUUM??
Blog#231
Wednesday, September 28th, 2022
Welcome back,
Vacuum polarization is a process in quantum field theory, and more particularly in quantum electrodynamics, where a background electromagnetic field generates virtual electron-positron pairs that alter the distribution of charges and currents that produced the original electromagnetic field. It is also sometimes referred to as the gauge boson's self-energy (photon).
I.I. Rabi measured the Lamb shift (The Lamb shift, named after Willis Lamb, is a difference in energy between two energy levels of the hydrogen atom which was not predicted by the Dirac equation) and the anomalous magnetic dipole moment (In quantum electrodynamics, the anomalous magnetic moment of a particle is a contribution of effects of quantum mechanics, expressed by Feynman diagrams with loops, to the magnetic moment of that particle.) of the electron after advances in radar technology during World War II resulted in improved accuracy for monitoring the energy levels of the hydrogen atom.
These effects related to deviations from the Dirac equation's projected value of 2 for the spectroscopic electron g-factor. On his return train trip from the Shelter Island Conference to Cornell, Hans Bethe theoretically estimated such variations in the hydrogen energy levels owing to vacuum polarization.
Since then, the effects of vacuum polarization have been commonly detected experimentally as well-understood background phenomena. Vacuum polarization, also known as the one loop contribution, happens when leptons (electron-positron pairs) or quarks interact.
The former (leptons) was discovered in the 1940s but was only recently discovered in 1997 using the TRISTAN particle accelerator in Japan, while the latter (quarks) was discovered along with multiple quark-gluon loop contributions from the early 1970s to the mid-1990s using the VEPP-2M particle accelerator at the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics in Siberia, Russia, and many other accelerator laboratories worldwide.
Vacuum polarization was first discussed in papers by P. A. M. Dirac and W. Heisenberg in 1934. Effects of vacuum polarization were calculated to first order in the coupling constant by R. Serber and E. A. Uehling in 1935.
As per quantum field hypothesis, the vacuum between cooperating particles isn't just unfilled space. Rather, it contains fleeting virtual molecule antiparticle matches (leptons or quarks and gluons). These brief matches are called vacuum bubbles. It tends to be shown that they quantifiably affect any cycle.
These particle-antiparticle pairs carry various kinds of charges, such as color charge if they are subject to QCD such as quarks or gluons, or the more familiar electromagnetic charge if they are electrically charged leptons or quarks, the most familiar charged lepton being the electron and since it is the lightest in mass, the most numerous due to the energy-time uncertainty principle as mentioned above; e.g., virtual electron-positron pairs.
Such charged pairs act as electric dipoles. In the presence of an electric field, e.g., the electromagnetic field around an electron, these particle-antiparticle pairs reposition themselves, thus partially counteracting the field (a partial screening effect, a dielectric effect). The field therefore will be weaker than would be expected if the vacuum were completely empty. This reorientation of the short-lived particle-antiparticle pairs is referred to as vacuum polarization.

[image: screencaps from SWTOR in the engineering compartment of the Essels. Crewman Vepp is says “What about a reactor reset? That would disengage the security locks, wouldn’t it, sir?” Chief engineer Salen says “Yeah, but a reactor reset vents the engineering compartment -- we’d be blown into space. Besides, controls are on the other side of the door.” Outside of the engineering compartment, on the other side of the yellow shield separating them, Ambassador Asara says “I’m sorry, Salen. We need to unlock the bridge while we have the chance. We have to reset the reactor. You and your men will be remembered.” Tai, a sith smuggler, turns around and faces the Ambassador and says “We can’t send these people to their deaths! Not when there’s an alternative!” behind this dialogue is the symbol for “lightside points gained” and the text “Corso Riggs approves.” end image]
couple thoughts on this
a) you knwo all the other engineers are like “OMIGOD vepp shut up” when vepp tells people about the reactor reset that might get them all killed :P Granted he didn’t tell them *how* to do it, that was on Salen.
b) I mentioned in the last post that Tai was combat adverse. This is one of the situations that shows the difference between Tai once he’s left the empire and empire Tai. Empire Tai would have been perfectly content letting the engineers die for the mission, because he would be afraid of trying it the other way. He was dominated by fear. Despite his lack of force and combat talents, he survived a while in the Sith Academy by tricking other acolytes to their deaths and avoiding straight out fights at all costs. He did things he wouldn’t have done otherwise because he was scared of what would happen to him if he didn’t.
Once he is rescued from Korriban (after his tricking people plans didn’t work and he got left for dead) and he’s with his team of smugglers, he sort of realized how unhealthy the environment he was in was and how much blood was on his hands. Now, even though Tai still prefers to avoid combat if possible, what he hates more than anything is the idea of going back to how he was, and prioritizing himself and his own personal safety over the things he knows are right. So even though he’s afraid a lot, he still does things that scare him because he knows he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he started getting innocent people killed again.
I guess Pubs side Tai really fits the whole “Courage isn’t the absence of fear, it’s overcoming it” or however the quote goes thing.
