لماذا أعتبر Xfce أفضل سطح مكتب Linux

اختيار بيئة سطح المكتب المناسبة عند استخدام Linux ليس مجرد تفضيل جمالي، بل عامل أساسي لتحديد سرعة النظام وسلاسة العمل اليومي. بعد تجارب طويلة مع بيئات مختلفة مثل GNOME وKDE وغيرها، وجدت أن Xfce يجمع بين الخفة والمرونة والتخصيص بدون التأثير على الأداء. هذه المزايا جعلتني أفضله كبيئة سطح مكتب أساسية لأن Xfce يمنحني كل ما أحتاجه دون إهدار موارد جهازي.

من بين جميع بيئات سطح المكتب ومديري النوافذ المتوفرة على لينكس، برزت واحدةٌ كأفضلها بالنسبة لي. على الرغم من أن Xfce ليس ببراعة بيئات سطح المكتب الأخرى، إلا أنني أصبحت أعتمد عليه.

5. يستخدم Xfce نموذج سطح مكتب قياسيًا

preacher: taking a break from updates for a different kind of post today! when tagging posts about the "APRIL" project, i try to go about 50/50 between targetting people who are genuinely into computers and coding, and people who simply enjoy tech aesthetic, or robots. figuring the latter demographic might not be familiar with templeOS, i thought it'd be nice to write a short post explaining what it is, how it relates to the project, and my personal interest in the operating system. i do actually know quite a bit about temple, so this is a rare technical preacher post without scott's input – but my interest in it is more in regards to its history and premise, rather than the technical aspects of how it operates, and of course i am not an IT person, so if i made any factual errors here, feel free to correct me.

rambling about templeOS! :) the "divine operating system"

preacher: the few people who have been following this blog since the start might've caught on to a few mentions of the "templeOS god word app" which the "APRIL" project hinges on. i figured the subject deserved a brief explanation on the blog, for those who might not be "in the know"

templeOS is a operating system designed "in accord with specific instructions from god", according to its late creator terry a. davis. it was initially released in 2005 but the latest update was as recently as 2017. terry davis died the following year on august 11th after being hit by train. (this is partly the reason for my ongoing obsession with temple, because august 11th has been a spiritually significant date for me since always, but that's besides the point)

templeOS was created entirely by davis, down to the fact that he had developed an entirely new coding language for the purpose – HolyC, a middle ground between C and C++, and named in reference to the vatican's holy see. needless to say developing a whole operating system singlehandedly is an incredible feat, and devising entirely new language doubly so.

templeOS has no internet support, but it has games! in what is perhaps my favorite feature of the OS, the games are divided into "fun games" and "unfun games" 😭

unfortunately most of them (regardless of fun/unfun designation) are borderline unplayable, at least on the emulator. some examples of the games include: keepaway, which is a basketball game, a complete flight simulator, and "after egypt" –a game in which you travel to a burning bush in order to use a "high-speed stopwatch", meant to act as an oracle, generating pseudo-random text. this is to my knowledge running on the same code as the god word app.

god word can be accessed independently outside of "after egypt" as well, without even opening an app – just by pressing f7 anywhere you can generate strings of words. it is meant to be a tool to communicate with god directly. the system also features a similar app which instead generates quotes from the king james bible, as well as a random line generator which i think is supposed to be a way or receiving visual input from god as well.

all in all completely incredible and one of my favorite things to have ever existed. i became obsessed with this last year since i first became interested in hardware vs software sentience, and i've been running it on virtualbox ever since. obviously most of the features don't work very well on the emulator (esp that i'm on mac so the keyboard maps really annoyingly) but sometimes i'll just launch it to play around with god word – this is kind of the entire premise of "APRIL". i wanted god word to hang out with me and be able to get the words out of it with only verbal input.

Prerequisites

Install dependencies

Before you start make sure your system is fully updated, all packages in this guide are installed with apt, if your OS does not have that, look for alternatives.

Add an account for Home Assistant Core called homeassistant.Since this account is only for running Home Assistant Core the extra arguments of -rm is added to create a system account and create a home directory.

Create the virtual environment

First we will create a directory for the installation of Home Assistant Core and change the owner to the homeassistant account.

Next up is to create and change to a virtual environment for Home Assistant Core. This will be done as the homeassistant Serial number autodesk 2019. account.

Once you have activated the virtual environment (notice the prompt change to (homeassistant) (email protected):/srv/homeassistant $) you will need to run the following command to install a required Python package.

Once you have installed the required Python package it is now time to install Home Assistant Core!

What is Retro Pie ? It’s software that allows you to play tons of emulators of old game consoles, from home systems like the Atari 2600, Super NES, Super Nintendo, etc. to the old 70’s and 80’s arcade machines that you would find in the mall. It even has the ability to play emulators for old home computers like Commodore 64 and the Sinclair Z80.

More technically, the Retro Pie is a collection of emulators and scripts which use Emulation Station as a front end.

Here’s a secret: while the Retro Pie is mainly geared to be installed on a Raspberry Pi, you don’t need a Raspberry Pi to install Retro Pie. You can install it on any PC that has a Debian based Linux operating system. Since I had installed Kubuntu on the Zotac Nano, I downloaded and installed the Debian/Ubuntu PC version of Retro Pie.

Mame Arcade Full Rom Pack

After installing Retro Pie according to the instructions, adding some themes (I settled on Cabsnazzy) and a set of Xbox 360 controllers, I downloaded some individual sample Roms to test the Mame emulator, an emulator that plays old arcade type games. What I discovered was that there are several different Mame emulators packaged with Retro Pie. For example, there is “mame4all”, “Mame 2000”, “Mame 2003 Libretto”, “Advance Mame”, etc.

Not any Mame rom will play in any Mame emulator. You need to install the correct “Romset version” of the Rom for each emulator. What does that mean ? Well, apparently various people have collected hundreds or even thousands of roms for a particular Mame version, customized them for that particular version of Mame, and packaged them into a “Rom Set”. The Rom Sets for each Mame Emulator are listed here at the Mame Retro Pie Wiki. To find a particular game and what RomSet it is in see here or here to download the entire lists of games for a particular Romset.

The first test I did was to download the Rom Set for Mame 2003. This Rom Set is 0.78. The download links are found at archive.org. The non-merged set is the one that will work with Emulation Station.

For the Mame 2003 set (Romset 0.78, about 2 GB) the easiest way to download is in linux using the linux command line program “transmission-cli” which will download torrent files. Copy the TORRENT link shown on the archive.org page and use that with torrent-cli.

For example, to download the 0.78 Rom set on your Linux command line type:

Once downloaded, unzip the downloaded file and move your selected roms to the correct subfolder in your Retro Pie install directory i.e., the “RetroPie/roms/mame-libreto/mame2003/” folder. Do NOT unzip any of the Roms. Copy the contents of the “samples” folder, to “RetroPie/roms/mame-libreto/mame2003/samples”.

Note that any vector type games (e.g., Battle Zone, Lunar Lander, Red Barron) should use Advance Mame 3 which is optimized for vector graphics, not Mame 2003 or other Mame emulators where they will look fairly horrible, with the vector lines being blurry and black and white. Battle Zone will show black and white instead of the green that it should like the following screen shot:

For Advance Mame, you will need to download the Mame 0.106 Rom Set as shown on the Retro Pie Wiki.

Warning: The 0.106 Romset is HUGE – about 65.6 GB zipped.

Because of its size, the .106 Romset should be downloaded on Windows rather than Linux as the standard Linux zip programs do not handle multi-part zips well and a program that does, 7Zip only works on Windows. Mac os x dual boot.

Once the .106 Romset is downloaded, download and install 7zip. Open the 7zip File Manager and navigate to the Romset download folder. For version 0.106 you will see that the zip has downloaded in 70 different parts! No worries, 7zip handles these as one zip file without having to actually combine them.

Just drag the individual subfolders or zip file for a particular game out of the 7Zip File Manage. Macos big sur virtualbox. Do NOT unzip any games roms that are themselves individual zips as they may not work in the emulator if they are unzipped and the Mame emalutor can read the zipped roms fine. For easy transferring to a linux machine, open up a WinSCP session and drop the rom subfolder or zip file into the appropriate folder on your Retro Pie machine (RetroPie/roms/mame-advmame/). As before, the files in “Mame 0.106 Non-MergedSamples” would be copied over to the related samples folder (RetroPie/roms/mame-advmame/samples).

That’s it – those are the basics of installing the correct romset for a particular Mame version.

Download psiphon for Linux/Ubuntu using wine :

Click on the application Menu.

Type “software” clicks “software & updates”

Click on the other software tab.

Click on add option.

Enter the ppa – ubuntu-wine/ppa in the API line section

Click add source and enter sudo password

Clicks authenticate and close.

Open the software center and search for wine app.

Install the app and enjoy the windows app on linux computer. Not all the windows application but most of the apps will work.

Now you need to download the psiphon 3 for linux .exe file. To download this use the below link and get the .exe file of psiphon for ubuntu.

Devuan GNU - Conocemos la distribución Debian sin Systemd, que acapara todas las miradas por ser totalmente libre. Devuan es basicamente un Debian modificado, que viene sin el administrador de sistema systemd init. Su entorno de escritorio predeterminado es XFCE, además viene con muchas aplicaciones gratuitas como LibreOffice o GIMP. Devuan GNU es compatible con sistemas de 32 y 64 bits, así como con Raspberry Pi, Nokia 900, etc. Esta interesante distribución linux, nos ofrece un SDK para que otros programadores puedan crear una nueva distribución GNU-Linux basada en Devuan GNU. También incluye por defecto Refracta Installer, para que puedas crear un remaster o un LiveCD totalmente personalizado. En este artículo explicamos brevemente qué es Devuan, dónde descargarlo, el sistema init que usa, su entorno de escritorio predeterminado y alguna cosa más.  

Devuan GNU - El Debian sin Systemd

Para hacer el articulo más entendible iremos por partes, por tanto comenzamos por... Por qué Devuan y sus versiones Su nombre oficial es Devuan GNU + Linux. La curiosa y similar denominación a Debian proviene de Debian + VUA (Administradores veteranos de Unix), y su principal propósito es promover el concepto conocido como Init Freedom, a través de un sistema operativo Debian pero libre de systemd. El lema de Devuan es... "Libertad de software, hazlo a tu manera" Las versiones de lanzadas por Devuan son las siguientes: Ceres: Lanzamiento continuo, equivale a Debian "Sid". Beowulf: Versión de prueba, equivale a Debian 10 "Buster" (16-3-2020). 2.1 "Ascii": Actualmente es la versión estable al 100% (25-11-2019). 1.0 "Jessie": 25-5-2017.   Donde descargar Devuan GNU Devuan GNU nos ofrece descargas directas, por torrent y magnet. Descargar Devuan GNU   Devuan, Debian y el sistema init La diferencia principal es su sistema init: Debian usa systemd y Devuan usa sysvinit. Sysvinit es el sistema init utilizado por Devuan como reemplazo de Systemd. Devuan considera que la campaña Init Freedom, tiene como base principal liberar a los usuarios de systemd. Puedes compartir sus ideas o no, pero una cosa te puedo decir... Devuan es una gran distribucion linux. Todos los componentes en Devuan están desarrollados para que no depender de systemd, y hoy en día es algo complejo pues la mayoría de herramientas y aplicaciones se desarrollan pensando en Systemd. Esto hace que Devuan sea especial y un proyecto muy interesante.   Arquitectura e instaladores El equipo de desarrollo de Devuan GNU hace un trabajo excelente, lo demuestra con todas las arquitecturas admitidas, increible. i386 amd64 arm64 armhf armel  Puedes usar Devuan como sistema de escritorio o portátil para tu trabajo diario. El tamaño de las iso pueden variar dependiendo del tipo de instalador seleccionado, pero lo mejor de todo es que tiene versiones de 32 y 64 bits. Instaladores disponibles: desktop-live : Para usuarios de escritorio. minimal-live : LiveCD basado en línea de comandos. netinst : Instalador en línea de comandos a través de la red. cdrom : Tres isos en formato CD. dvd : ISO completa. embedded : instalador para sistemas ARM como Raspberry Pi, Beaglebone Black y Odroid. virtual : Imágenes vm para instalar en QEMU o VirtualBox. El usuario y password de la live cd: Usuario - devuan Password - devuan El root y password de la live cd: Usuario - root Password - toor Devuan GNU usa como instalador gráfico Refracta. Este instalador funciona muy bien, pero ojo... sigue los pasos que te indica después de comprender lo que te explica. Si solo manejas instaladores tipo Ubuntu o Calamares, Refracta puede ser un desafío ya que se ejecuta en dos ventanas diferentes, una es la de diálogos (aún le falta documentación), y otra es la consola / terminal.   Escritorio y aplicaciones Por defecto Devuan viene con el escritorio XFCE, pero en sus repositorios también puedes encontrar KDE Plasma, GNOME, Cinnamon y MATE.

Escritorio XFCE de Devuan Las aplicaciones preinstaladas por defecto son perfectas para tu trabajo diario. Parece mentira que estén todas en una iso de apenas 1GB. Listamos las más representativas. LibreOffice Firefox ESR web browser mutt email client Orage Calendar GIMP Ristretto Mousepad Text Editor Evince PDF Reader VLC Video Player Quad Libet Audio Player Xfburn Burner Xarchiver Archive Tool Refracta Installer and Remastering Tool Synaptic Package Installer GParted Partition Editor En el test realizado en sololinux, probamos a instalar y ejecutar Inkscape, GIMP, el editor de video OpenShot y matemático GNU Octave. Los resultados son sorprendentes, todo funciona estupendamente.   Otros detalles interesantes El administrador de archivos es Thunar de XFCE, pequeño, rápido, fácil de usar y de todos conocido. Otro detalle importante es que Devuan GNU al carecer de Systemd no tiene montaje de dispositivos automático, sin embargo eso no supone ningún problema para el administrador de archivos Thunar, pero si necesitas montar algún dispositivo lo puedes hacer con un click. El administrador de red predeterminado es Wicd, no NetworkManager. Tranquilo... es muy sencillo de utilizar, jaja. La búsqueda de paquetes online es similar a Debian: En Debian usamos packages.debian.org y en Devuan pkginfo.devuan.org. Realmente estamos ante una distribución linux diferente, de esas que la amas o la odias pero que vale la pena probar. Mi enhorabuena al equipo de desarrollo de Devuan GNU, hacen un trabajo excelente.  As of September 2019, Windows 10 holds 60.65 percent share of the Windows operating system market. Windows 7 is second with 29.39 percent. But to put it simply, you need to upgrade to Windows 10.

 Can Old Computers Run Windows 10?

It’s a good question. Windows 10 was released with such low system requirements that in theory, many older computers, from around the Windows Vista era (2007) and later, should be compatible.

 In practice, however, this is often not the case. Instead, computers released with Windows 7 are a better option. The system requirements are almost identical to Windows 10, making the later OS an ideal upgrade.

 The Windows 10 System Requirements

It’s a good idea to see if your current computer hardware can run Windows 10. Start off by reviewing the minimum system requirements for Windows 10.

 The System Requirements for running Windows 10 as confirmed by Microsoft’s specification page are:

 Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC

RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2GB for 64-bit

Hard disk space: 16GB for 32-bit OS 20GB for 64-bit OS

Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver

Display: 800×600

If your hardware matches or surpasses these values, you should be able to run Windows 10.

 How to Check If Your Computer Will Run Windows 10

The easiest way to see if your computer is compatible with Windows 10 is to run the later operating system in a virtual machine. Our guide to using VirtualBox will show you how to install an operating system like Windows 10 on your computer.

 Too complicated? No problem. To find out the current hardware of your Windows 7 or 8 PC, click Start then type sys. In the displayed results, click System Information and use this to compare with the minimum system requirements above.

 One stumbling block may be the hard disk drive (HDD). While the requirements are the same, upgrading to a larger, faster HDD will improve performance on Windows 10 considerably. Older HDDs rarely perform well with a new operating system, so consider a replacement hard disk drive before upgrading.

 Can My Computer Run Windows 10 64-Bit?

Older computers are unlikely to be able to run any 64-bit operating system. While some pre-2007 models have 64-bit hardware, most are 32-bit. As such, computers from this time that you plan to install Windows 10 on will be limited to the 32-bit version.

If your computer isn’t suitable for Windows 10, you have three choices to make.

 1. Buy a New PC or Laptop

It’s the easiest option, but potentially the most expensive. While Windows 10 computers are available for all price tags, for a daily driver, budget for around $500. Take the time to head to a local computer retailer with machines on display and try one out.

 Windows 10 will set you back $119 new, but it is possible to try an evaluation version. This 90 day version of Windows 10 Enterprise is available from Microsoft. However, if you opt to buy Windows 10, this won’t be the version you use. It’s worth checking out if you’re interested, however, and don’t plan to buy a new PC.
