when I drop like a cannon-ball (from cloud nine) Ch 3
AO3
< First | < Previous
The trio rushed to the gummi ship, easily falling into familiar patterns as they prepped for take-off.  In a matter of minutes, they were rising into the air and piercing out through the world barrier.
“Alright, where are we going?” Sora asked.
“Well,” Goofy answered, “I’m only seeing one pathway we can take, so I guess we’ll have to start there.”
They charted their course, setting off down the trail of stardust.   Halfway to their destination, the console beeped in notification.  The trio jerked to attention, sharing a startled look before leaning over the panel where their ship was being hailed.  With one last worried glance at the others, Sora pressed down on the receiver.
“Uh...hello?”
The screen flickered, before lighting up to show two chipmunks, faces pressed close to the camera, just as surprised as he was.
“Who are you?” one asked.
“You’re not Donald and Goofy!” the other exclaimed.
Donald pushed forward from behind, leaning over Sora’s shoulder, “It’s you!”
“Chip, Dale!” Goofy greeted, “It’s good to see you.”
“Donald!  Goofy!” Dale cheered, “You’re alright.”
“We’ve been so worried since your ship’s signal went offline last year,” Chip added.
“Sorry about that,” Goofy said, “We’ve been sleeping.”
“Sleeping?  For a whole year?”
Donald shook his head, leaning in closer, “Never mind that!  Have you seen the King?”
“Sure, we have,” Chip nodded.
“Really?” Sora leaned forward, grabbing the screen, “Then, do you know where he is?”
“Nope!” Dale said, and the trio slumped in response, “The last time he stopped by was a few months ago, and we haven’t heard from him since.”
The chipmunks watched as they all sighed despondently, sharing a glance before continuing, “Still, it’s good to hear from you!  I know it’ll make the Ladies feel better, knowing you’re alright.”
“Of course,” Goofy smiled, “Tell the Queen we have everything under control, and we’ll find the King just as soon as we can.”
“Will do!” The chipmunks saluted, and the screen went dark.
“Good to know everything’s okay back home,” Donald sighed.
“And it looks like our stop’s coming up quick!” Goofy said, pointing out the windshield to the quickly approaching world-barrier.  They strapped themselves in, holding on as the ship entered atmosphere, lowering towards a dense bit of city overlooked by a castle.
“Hey, guys?” Sora called, peering out the window, “Is it just me, or does that castle seem kind of... familiar?”
Once they landed, the location proved undeniably familiar.
“It’s Hollow Bastion,” Sora breathed, a shiver running down his spine, “But, I don’t remember all this being here before.”
“It sure looks different,” Goofy agreed.
Donald nodded, peering over the near-by railing to where a plaza seemed to be in the midst of construction, “I hope Leon and the others are doing okay.”
“Oh, that’s right!” Sora said, “This used to be their home, didn’t it?”
The trio headed into the square, the streets quiet around them.  As they made their way up a set of stairs at the other end, they saw a figure rummaging busily through an open industrial freezer, muttering darkly as he worked.  He pulled back after a moment to cross his arms, revealing an elderly duck.
“Uncle Scrooge!” Donald startled, going still, mouth opening and closing silently in shock.  Sora didn’t think he’d ever seen Donald speechless like this.
As the other duck turned to face them, Goofy leaned forward, placing a hand on Donald’s shoulder, “It’s good to see you!  When we ran into Huey, Dewey, and Louey in Traverse Town, they told us they didn’t know what had happened to you.”
“Ah.  I see,” Scrooge replied, fiddling with his tie and giving an embarrassed cough, “Yes, well, it takes more than that to take me down! Now, I’m back – re-building my assets here, of course.  This world was very successful before it fell, and I imagine it will be again – and I intend to get in on the ground floor!”
“That’s nice” Donald said, relief draining to something more exasperated, “And the boys?”
“Yes, yes, they ended up back here when the world reformed.  They’re around here somewhere,” he waved his cane to emphasize his point, then nodded, turning away, “Now, I must get back to work.  If you’re so worried about the boys, why don’t you go check on them?  The little hellions are always running around the place, I imagine you’ll find them quickly enough.  And you should check in with the Restoration Committee while you’re at it, as well!  Farewell, then.”
With one last nod, he walked off, muttering under his breath.
“Well, he’s focused as always,” Goofy chuckled.
Donald huffed, “I think you mean rude as always.”
“Aw, aren’t you glad to know he’s okay, though?” Goofy asked.
“Yeah, whatever.  Let’s just go,” Donald muttered, turning on his heel and striding further into the city, “Can’t believe I was worried about him.”
Sora exchanged an amused glance with Goofy before racing after him, “Hey, wait up!”
They headed into the tight, winding streets of the budding city.  The walls rose up around them, reaching up towards a corridor of empty sky.  A chime met Sora’s ears, and he paused, glancing around for the source.
“Wha-?”
Further down the street, a disk of light appeared on the cobblestone, hovering for a moment then rising two feet off the ground with a sliding chirp before disappearing.
“What is that?” he wondered, turning to watch another light appear on the other side of the street.
“Sora, watch out!”
He turned to the side, barely summoning his Keyblade in time to block the blur of darkness rushing towards him.
“Heartless!”
More enemies popped from the shadows, surrounding them, and they fell into battle.  Minutes ticked by as they slowly thinned the herd.   Finally, the coast seemed clear.
“Whew – looks like the heartless are here, too.  We should – “
“Sora!  Heads up!”
Sora turned at the call, head craning to locate the source of the familiar voice.  Finally, he peered up, finding Yuffie crouched on top of a roof.  She leapt into the air, sending her blades spinning into two heartless that had been sneaking up on them before she plummeted towards the ground.  At the very last minute, she flexed, wings bursting from her back in a flurry of iridescent feathers to slow her fall.   Sora gaped at her as she stood proudly, hands on her hips as her wings spread in a smug display.
“That was close.  You should really pay more attention, you know,” she smirked.
The trio stared at her in shock, speechless.
“Yuffie!” Sora breathed, finally finding his voice, “Your wings!”
“Yup, aren’t they amazing?” she grinned, “Me, Aerith, and Leon are a Flight, now!”
“The three of you?  When did that happen?”
“A few months ago,” she answered with a giddy grin, eyes sparkling.   Sora leaned forward to admire the wings, and she tilted them to show off the white, brown, and shimmering blue-green feathers.
“They’re so cool!” He cheered, “What are you?  And the others?”
“I’m a magpie!  Aerith’s a bushcrow – and get this, Leon’s a raven!  Isn’t that just like him?”
“So cool,” Sora repeated at a whisper as she gave a final flutter and tucked the wings away.
“C’mon!  Everyone’s working on stuff over at Merlin’s house.”
Yuffie led them through a few turns before bouncing forward to throw open a door, where it slammed into the wall and earned her a tired sigh from inside.
“Meet the Hollow Bastion Restoration Committee!” she cheered with a flourish.  Sora stepped in after her, blinking as his eyes adjusted to the shadows.  Three faces turned to him, slowing coming into focus.
“Sora, Donald, Goofy!  We missed you!” Aerith greeted.
Cid grinned, spinning in his chair and leaning over the back, “Well, if you ain’t a sight for sore eyes.”
Leon nodded beside her, “I knew it.”
“Knew what?” Sora wondered.
Crossing his arms, Leon stared at the trio contemplatively, “A while back, everyone suddenly remembered you guys, all at the same time.”
“You… remembered us?” Sora crossed his arm, scowling at them, “Wait, does that mean you forgot about us?”
Yuffie leaned in, waving her hand dismissively, “So, where have you guys been all this time?”
“We were sleeping,” Goofy answered, smiling blithely.  Beside him, Donald snorted in amusement.
Sora laughed sheepishly, scratching at his hair.  How to even explain that? “Yeah, that was… So, uhm, we’re trying to find Riku and the King, have you seen them?”
Leon and Aerith exchanged a glance over Cid’s head, before facing them again and shaking their heads.
“Sorry,” Aerith said, “But let us know if there’s anything we can do to help, okay?”
He supposed the really would have been too easy.  Still, “Okay, thanks."
“Don’t go thanking us just yet,” Cid scoffed, turning back to his computer.
“Hollow Bastion’s got a problem.  A big problem,” Leon sighed, “We were hoping the three of you could give us a hand around here.”
Sora crossed his arms, smirking, “Like we’re gonna say no?”
“Hmph.  I forgot who I’m dealing with.”
“Hey, what do you mean by that?” Donald groused.
Aerith stepped up next to Leon, nudging him slightly, “Just think of it as a sort of… ‘Leon compliment’”
Leon mouthed the term, as if testing the words, before rolling his eyes, “Just follow me to the bailey – there’s something you need to see.”
Leon headed swiftly out the door.  Sora, Donald, and Goofy went to follow, but were stopped by a shimmer of lights blocking their path.   The glow grew in brightness, nearly blinding them, before fading to reveal an old man carrying a briefcase.  He brushed off his robe, peering around the room before smiling at them, “Oh!  I thought it was you.  Right on time.”
"Merlin!”
“Sora and the gang said they’re gonna help out!” Yuffie said.
“Splendid.  We’ll count on you,” he nodded once, dropping his bag by the door, “Ah, yes!  Did you give them the cards, dear?”
“Oh!” Aerith gasped.  She turned to rummage through a drawer before approaching the three, “Here, they’re presents for you.  Leon thought you might like to have them.”
She handed over a small magenta card to each of them.
“Hollow Bastion Restoration Committee Honorary Member,” Sora read, “Hey, thanks, Leonnnnn - uh?”
He blinked at the empty room, then straightened, realization zinging up his spine, “Oh, no.  We’re supposed to be at the bailey!”
“Oh, dear,” Aerith giggled, “Here, I’ll show you the way.”
As Aerith lead them through the streets, Sora found himself staring at her curiously, a grin growing on his face.  A Flight, his friends became a Flight!
“Sooo, you, Leon, and Yuffie, huh?”
“Oh, yes,” Aerith smiled, “It was a wonderful surprise.  The three of them are amazing.  We’d been working together for so long, but I wasn’t sure... well, the last few times I was in a flock didn’t work out, you see.”
“Flock?” Sora wondered.
“Yes - oh, do you not use that term on your world?  It’s when you’re part of the group that wants to bond, but hasn’t yet.  You and your friends – Kairi and Riku – you would be a flock.”
“Oh,” Sora said, mulling it over.  Back on the islands they tended to still refer to it as a Flight, or your future flight, but...  flock, huh?  He liked it.  “Wait - there were people you wanted to bond with before Leon and Yuffie?  Did something happen to them?”
“No, nothing like that.  It just didn't work out, between us,” Aerith said, smiling sadly, “We didn’t want the same things in life, that’s all.  Our paths lead us in directions that were just too different.   We’re still friends, of course.  We all stop to catch up, whenever they pass through.  Leon even spars with Cloud, whenever he’s around.”
Sora stared up at her, confused.  Things changed, sure, but it couldn't be that much, could it?  It had only ever been Riku and Kairi, for him.  He couldn’t imagine ever bonding with anyone else.  But Aerith said it like it was easy, like it was normal, to just - move on.  To move on from – wait. “Wait a minute, Cloud?!"
Aerith jumped at his sudden exclamation, turning to peer at him in confusion, “Yes?"
“Like, Cloud, Cloud?  Blonde spiky hair, giant sword, Cloud?  You know him?”
“I - yes.  But, how do you know him?”
“I fought him when I was traveling last time, at the Coliseum!”
“You fought him at -" Aerith cut herself off with a sigh, one hand cradling her cheek, “Of course he was.  I can only imagine what Tifa had to say about that.”
“Who?”
“Hm?  Oh, another friend of ours.  Don’t worry about it.  Now, the bailey’s just up ahead.  You three go on – I need to get back to work at Merlin’s house.”
They found Leon waiting just past the entrance of the bailey.
“Come on,” he called, “It’s just over here.”
Sora jogged afterwards, but couldn’t help glancing up at the man, “So....”
“What?”
“Yuffie said you had raven wings.”
“Yes,” Leon answered, “And?”
“Can I see them?”
“No; we have more important things to be doing.”
“Pleaaaase?” Sora begged, hands clasped together as he stared up at him with wide eyes.
Leon leaned back, shoulders hunching as he glanced away, but finally sighed, “Fine, if it will get you to shup up about it.  Just this once, though.”
In a flash of silver sparks, a pair of slick dark wings spread from his back, beating twice before settling into place, trailing down to the floor.  As he turned, the feathers reflected the light with a soft sheen.
“Whoa,” Sora breathed.
“Hmph,” Leon turned away, but not before Sora caught a hint of a pleased smirk pulling at his face where he buried it in the ruff of his jacket.  A second later he dismissed the wings in another shower of silver, walking ahead, “Come on.  What I want to show you is over here.”
He guided Sora, Donald, and Goofy over to a large railing that overlooked the valley below, “Look at that.”
His tone was serious, solemn, and Sora peered out hesitantly.  The opening offered a stunning view of the land outside, the collapsed rubble of what must have once been a central part of the city, and the jagged trench that surrounded it.  The trench seemed to be filled with black water, churning restlessly, but the longer Sora stared the more something seemed... off.
The sheen of reflected sunlight held an unnerving yellow glow, and it pulsed and writhed in unnatural patterns.  And, he realized, there was no wind – nothing to make it move like that.  He squinted, trying to make out the details, and suddenly realized what he was seeing.  Not water, but heartless.
Thousands and thousands of heartless.
“We want to restore Hollow Bastion to what it used to be.  Who knows, maybe even something better.  There’s still a lot to do, but I’m sure we can handle everything – except… for that,” Leon said, sweeping a hand over the view before pointing down, “and that.”
Sora leaned over the edge to peer down at the path below, where a small squad of spindly white creatures squirmed their way forward.   Nobodies.  Sora clenched his fist, snapping his gaze up to Leon determinedly, “We’ll handle them.”
Leon smiled in return, “Well that’s good to hear.  So, you know what’s going on then?”
“There’s this guy, Pete, who’s been going around plotting with the heartless,” Sor explained, “But, he’s not smart enough to tie his own shoes.  The ones we need to worry about are the Nobodies.”
“And those Organization XIII guys in charge, too,” Goofy reminded.
 “You called?”
They came, The Organization.  For the first time, they showed themselves: a long line of hooded black figures.  They didn’t stay long.  Just long enough to taunt them before disappearing in a swirl of shadow.  Sora tried to chase after them, but found himself blocked by a single cloaked figure.
“Move!” Sora demanded.
“Now, do you think that’s polite?” the figure chided, “Shutting me down like that?”
Sora growled, “I said get out of the way!”
“As if!  You can talk all you want, but that won’t change a thing.”
Donald brandished his wand, “Then we’re gonna make you move!”
“See, that would work, if I were just any old dude,” the figure sighed, hand on his hip, “Except I’m not.  I’m with the Organization.   Nothing ‘any old’ about me.”
“Hah,” Sora scoffed, “Tough talk for someone who stood on the sidelines while his Nobody flunkies did the fighting.”
“Oh, dear; I think you go the wrong impression.  Why don’t I remind you how tough the crowd you’re dealing with really is?” the stranger said.
“Remind me?” Sora paused, brow furrowing in confusion as his heart seized, before shaking his head with a low growl, scowling up at his opponent.
The organization member laughed, “That’s right!  He used to give me that same exact look!”
“I guess you think you can psyche me out by saying really random stuff!”
“Heh.  I just don’t know.”
They stared each other down, hanging in the moment as the tension grew, until the figure broke it with a casual shrug, “Be a good boy now!”
“Wait!” Donald called, lunging forward, but he tumbled through smoke to land on the ground, “Nuts, he got away.”
“That was weird,” Sora frowned, “Who gave him the same look?”
Goofy rested a hand on his shoulder, “You know, I think he was just trying to confuse ya.”
Sora swallowed down the sudden nausea welling up from within and nodded, pulling out his membership card and a smile, “Yeah, you’re right.  Only one me!  The Hollow Bastion Restoration Committee honorary member!”
Warmth welled up from within him, turning his grin brighter and bubbling out, as if trying to escape his body.  It was escaping, he realized, as the card began to shine.  His Keyblade flashed into existence as well, guiding his hand as the card began to float.  With a beam of light, Sora could feel something clicking into place, a connection with a distant star.
“What’s this?”
“Oh,” Sora breathed, “Now I get it.  That must’ve been the path Yen Sid talked about.  Sorry to run, Leon!  But, other worlds are calling.”
“Organization XIII,” Leon said, staring contemplatively at where the stranger had disappeared, “They look tough.  Be careful out there.”
Sora nodded, grin pulling at his cheeks, “See you soon!”
Sora, Donald, and Goofy rushed back to the Gummi Ship and headed into space.  They’d barely managed to make it past the world barrier when the console started ring.  With a curious glance, they answered.
“Sora!”
“Chip, Dale,” he greeted, “What’s going on?”
“You guys may want to check your radar,” Chip said, Dale working at another screen in the background.
“Why?” Sora asked, as Goofy began starting up their map, “What’s up?”
“It’s that world you came from, Twilight Town.  It’s –“
“- Missing,” Goofy cut in, “It’s missing.”
