currently inferno and my eric fic idea WILL happen in the same universe, and they're both apart of the same collection so 🤔 trying to think of what other ideas i could come up with

failure and futility

for day 2 of campfire fest! prompt: third eye (and i guess could also count for explosion, or a lack thereof lol) @outerwilds-events

#i meant to do something yesterday but i had a crazy shift at work and was feeling lazy lol #anyways. pye and idaea after the probe didn't work #this line of text is the first thing that comes to mind for 'third eye' for me bc its the only evidence/in-game mention of the nomai's -#- third eye being special/different from the other two in some way. im curious if it is actually composed differently and has better vision #or if it is just better for seeing fine details in things directly in front of them since it is forward-facing as opposed to -#- being on the sides of their head #also i just think about these two a lot. can you imagine being co-leaders of the most difficult and controversial part of a massive project #that is so important to so many people including your friends family members and ancestors who have died in search of what you are -#- going to potentially destroy your entire clan while attempting to find #you are building a weapon intended to destroy yourself and the entire star system you were born in #and your co-leader is the person with quite possibly the most opposite opinions and disposition to you #idaea having to grapple with the fact that the failure of something he never wanted to exist in the first place is still upsetting to him -#- because despite their differences he still sympathizes with pye who was so confident and wanted it to work so badly #and both of them as well as anyone else working at the sun station put so much time and energy into constructing it #and that work was so miserable due both to the heat and the tension due to their differing opinions and their own mixed feelings on it #pye having to admit defeat to everyone else working on the project who were so excited for this to finally give them the answer #in front of idaea who was so convinced that it was a bad idea and who she was probably desperate to prove wrong #in front of the entire crew of people who had spent probably months in miserable working conditions #after she had been so confident that it would work and so insistent that this was the only way #and she had to admit not only that it failed but that it couldn't possibly work. that deep down she knew and had probably known for a while #- that it would never work and had continued working on it anyway because she wanted it to work so bad #anyways. the fucking brainworms #tried out a new style for this and i really like how it turned out #outer wilds #outer wilds spoilers #outer wilds nomai #frostgnaw draws

you ever just see a super niche piece of d&d advice (idek if this is the right word for it) and feel an itch in your bones to make an entire zine that's effectively an essay talking about how much you dislike it and the ableist implications of it being enforced at tables but it's just for you because you don't share your thoughts with other human beings that'd be wild and you don't particularly feel like being told it's not actually ableist and you're just oversensitive and can't take a joke today. no just me never mind dw about it

#dungeons and dragons #dnd #d&d #ttrpgs #ttrpg #zines #zine making #for anyone who is interested it's truly so random but here goes the tags rambles we're being brave today and sharing our opinions #so I saw a tiktok (it was actually a reel but we move) of someone joking that as the barbarian in the party #they seem to know their party members' abilities more than they do #like they'll help out the wizard with what spells they have #or have a statblock ready for the druid's wildshape #and I was like huh this is cute and funny we love players supporting each other at the table #and then people in the comments were mentioning that they use timers in their home games??#so like people have two minutes to figure out what they're going to do and do it otherwise they lose their turn and the round moves on #and loads of people were going like “omg this is genius haha gonna do this myself”#and like I cannot express how humiliating it would be for me if I was thinking and someone whips out a literal stopwatch and is like #“go faster grr!!”#I'm chronically ill and neurodivergent and mentally ill and all of my disabilities can affect my cognitive abilities #meaning I can take longer to figure things out than other people or forget what I was doing or how to speak or whatever #and it just got me thinking more generally as well about the obsession with efficiency in our current culture #and how sad it made me that so many people are implementing such a humiliating tool of efficiency in their home games? with their friends?#and like sure if everyone is consenting and happy with it fine but I just hate the idea of punishing disabled people for being disabled #especially when so many of us use ttrpgs as an escape mechanism and a tool of fantasy #like I do not want my high int wizard to have debilitating brain fog that's not part of the dream for me yk?#anyway this is very random but I have been getting really into zine making this year #it's a very fun creative outlet and I find it doesn't have as much as the pressure that other creative hobbies have had for me in the past #we're sharing our opinions woo!! exposure is important in getting over fears and I hate that because it feels so icky!!

Came across a faux interview between Gene Roddenberry and Sarek (the actor who plays Sarek is playing Sarek) and I think Sarek & Amanda's mad scientist relationship is so goddamn interesting - TERRIBLE parents ("We felt Spock's torture of course but Amanda and I had a dream. One that justified even the risk of our precious son's life and sanity. What point is there in any life, surviving, unless it has meaning?") but my God...TALK about matching someone's freak. I also like the picture Sarek paints of Vulcan society, (which I've been rambling about recently) it's a very specific portrayal of Vulcans and how they view emotions which I don't think is carried over into much canon - wherein somebody emoting at someone else is seen as almost a hateful act.

#he also says that Vulcans carry their children for 12 months instead of 9 v_v I'm so sorry Vulcan Women #Sarek & Amanda: -seeing their son suffering- That's so fucking sad v_v ......... anyway -stares into each other's eyes some more-#<- and I genuinely do think they DID care and that's the worst part #that them genuinely loving and caring about Spock and KNOWING he was suffering acutely did NOT move either one of them to help him #bc it would cost their joint dream and he was created with a Purpose which would never be more important than Him #Spock: My childhood was torturous #Sarek & Amanda: Yes it was BUT SPOCK....all that suffering? It meant something.#Sarek and Amanda have 3 children which is wild bc they SHOULD have 0 children since they used two out of three as living experiments #and political propaganda #there's no one else for sarek but amanda and vice versa bc they are both insane #sybok is also a gigantic weirdo - being a member of Spock's family means you're a weirdo who clashes with your society

#first things first i think in like 2022 him and spencer def broke up at some point for a multitude of reasons #mainly that mabeline feels she's matured and has taken on a more protective/providing role in spencer's life and yet he hasnt changed 1 bit #if anything he just got worse #the breakup itself isnt over like some huge conflict. jonah just realizes one day this guy is kind of bad for me and she loves him still #but doesnt know if they really should be together so she says something like. i think we should take a break.#and the two of them arent together for most of the story in this au #on spencer's end this leads to a whole bunch of turmoil an identity crisis a situationship with maddiefriend etc #on mabeline's end he's kind of just left with this quiet longing #she's objectively doing quite well for herself but he finds himself missing something. he just wishes spencer were still with her #and hates himself for still being stuck on him but cant stop thinking about what if he gets better #so eventually by the end of the story i think they would get back together #her and spencer reunite and shes hesitant at first to accept him but he proves that he's changed for the better and learned his lesson.#and she admits to herself and to him that he loves him #i'll try to make this more cohesive if i actually write this as a fic or a comic sometime #not that i really have time for that... these days. sigh #anyways besides pining over her ex she gets up to some other stuff like starting testosterone and fursuit commissions like it says up there #as of getting back together with spencer in 2025 (?) she still lives with her parents #but she has accumulated enough mouney to like rent an apartment so afterwards him and spencer end up living together and working towards #getting enough money for a hosue #i think maybe also her and spencer become fully fledged members of P.I.E.? im thinking about the future of P.I.E. as well #toast and ghost are retired probably by this point and i think spooker and chris would become the main guys #i havent put THAT much thought into it but i think woah should be involved as like an apprentice and sue's daughter too who i will draw soo #P.I.E. experts let me know what you think the future holds for them... if you are okay with it i might use your ideas for inspiration #anyways actual tags now #venturiantale #taleblr #mabeline wolf #jonah wolf #venturiantale fanart #VT 2020s au

i should be sleeping but i do want to reiterate how much i love that our collective fan community and also the streamers are constantly like, so new members when? new language when? a teaser drops and we're all like germans???? german time????? asiatic language time??????? new faces??? new friends?? new communities????

frank and piper are interesting counterpoint narratives to me. both of them have relatively mundane problems compared to the rest of the cast yet their parent's domains represent the heights of human passion as defined by the series, despite piper and frank both being (outwardly) dispassionate and (inwardly) mopey. the good end of these domains is love and protection (selfless), the bad end is heartbreak and bloodlust (selfish), which both of them try to resist. they both get claimed last out of their trios and had beforehand assumed that they were the children of someone else. both also experience perceived rejection from their mortal family directly before the series begins - both express anger and hurt at being "sent away". their rejection and unexpected claiming, back-to-back, results in discombobulation for them both, and feelings of humiliation brought on by both sets of parents.

they also both go through forced physical transformations by their parents to fit an ideal they don't want. all of the characters experience issues of identity and self-esteem but i think its the most pronounced with these two in the series. neither of them really knows who they are, and are pessimistic about their own capabilities. they are also counterpoints in that they feel disconnected from their own looks - both are very self-conscious people, but, based on how they're described by other characters, piper is probably the most beautiful member of the 7 and frank is probably the least. piper is frequently harassed and objectified, whereas frank is teased constantly about his looks. he neither feels as childish as his face is nor as grown as his body is, and he doesn't understand how to move through the world. both of which are common experiences throughout puberty - suddenly being treated differently on the basis of a body that's changing faster than you want or understand.

(discourse alert) i don't have a lot to add to the piper transformation discourse except that i do think its interesting that her blessing was temporary within the book and her love interest actually self-reflected on his reaction to it and realized that he should not have told her that she looked hot in that instance. rick did reverse frank's transformation five years later and i'm curious about his thought process about both writing it in the first place and in reversing it, and what feedback he received, if any. piper's transformation was a makeover whereas frank's was a puberty, which later rick walked back with "actually frank is still going through puberty". piper's was cheesy, sure, but frank's falls so flat bc that's just not how it works. its too much of a stretch. i don't even think it was in rick's og plan for frank, maybe he just watched captain america and was like "hell yeah i should do that" and flipped a coin between frank and leo, bc again frank was already initially described as physically grown in his debut book. and i can't even talk about hazel's reaction to to it bc its not real to me and i can't read suddenly. idk frank's plotline in general was too rushed in that book and he should have gotten another pov chapter set at least bc rick was trying to do too much too fast and relied on idiocy like the transformation to support it in the place of real character work when it wasn't even necessary for anything he accomplished in the book. he could've just walked around with better posture and achieved the same effect.

#very long very rambling post sorry. i wish piper and frank actually got to interact #there's more to say about gender here but idk how to articulate it #you could argue that all members foil each other in some way this isn't the only foil for these characters between the two trios #i just think its interesting especially how their transformations are treated in the text #idk my feelings about both rick and the fandom's reaction to the discourse is complicated #a lot of fans who correctly assessed the fatphobia embedded in the plotline would be foaming at the mouth with rage #if rick wrote that percy or nico gained weight after tarturus #people have different standards for the characters they view as side characters versus the characters they actually identify with #which happens in every fandom. its not really 'problematic' but it does make their takes about 'representation' a little unserious to me #blogs that used to draw biblically accurate frank also drew 16yo percy with eightpack abs and hced frank as a big brother uwu and asexual #its the 'you look like you give great hugs!' condescension in fandom form #although fanon frank is so divorced from canon frank that its not really relevant ig just annoying
