My eternal dilemma: Swords or coffee?

Fair warning: Most of this post is me talking to myself. Asking questions and then immediately answering them. So uhhh, yeah.

Context: I want Blorbos. I mean... I have blorbos, from my shows and my games, but I want OC blorbos to develop and inspire me to make shit. I have put out a real estate ad for my brain, and yet I have no characters living rent free in it yet.

Ahem. Swords or Coffee. To have Blorbos, they need a world to live in, and I have two very strong aesthetics that I enjoy when it comes to worldbuilding. Unfortunately, they're almost completely mutually exclusive. Almost.

High Fantasy (with touches of feudal Japan and developing gunpowder)

And Retro/Lofi (often in city settings, and often showcasing the location's food)

My objective now is to figure out how to fuse these two settings. I want a barista with a katana on their back. I want, like, a walkman with designer headphones meant to fit over catgirl ears. I want belts and leather straps for equipment and armor, strapped overtop varsity jackets. And I think by writing this out just now, I've distilled this into the ACTUAL essence of the problem I'm facing:

Why carry weapons in a (mostly) modern day world? What would you need to fight, and more to the point, why would average citizens be encouraged to fight them rather than the [unnamed threat] being taken care of by a private corporation or government program?

Let's be honest. If goblins infested modern day New York City instead of rats, there would either be an act passed DECADES ago to eradicate them, or there would be a company you could pay to take care of the goblins for you. I want normal citizens to be able to fight goblins, and INCENTIVIZED to fight goblins. When they see one it's not "awww, a goblin's blocking the patio" it's "Aw fuck yeah, a goblin! (dramatic weapon drawing sound)"... I suppose then that combat wouldn't be for self defense, at least not most of the time. Maybe some more powerful enemies lurk the darker parts of the city (getting ahead of myself).

If combat isn't for self defense, what's it for? Well maybe it's moreso for sport. Day-to-day combat is like training, with small rewards, and then there's a big league you can compete in. Something akin to HxH's battle tower (or whatever it's called), or Splatoon's turf wars that are regularly scheduled in public places like parking garages. I think that'd work best.

Last note: No, I'm not actually going to be using goblins for the enemies because I like goblins too much, I'll have several Goblin characters. The enemies will be far less humanoid in nature, and more impervious to pain. Maybe like a hive mind situation.

Well, that's probably enough worldbuilding for tonight. Goals for tomorrow are to do some doodles and post them, as well as to write details on the enemies, the incremental rewards, and the "tournament" system. Past that, we'll flesh out the details of a magic system including a universe-wide twist on most magic formulas (IDK what it is yet), as well as prioritizing a balance between combat-magic and passive-magic.

i like to think before the two of you ‘started’ dating, it would be a lot of pinning from both ends + looking at one another while the other isn’t looking etc.  i don’t think either of you would really ‘express’ your feelings until after everything in fabletown clears up. he’s stressed about the murder case. does that mean snow isn’t trying to spell it out in front of him that you like him the way he likes you? no. she’s the captain of this ship for sure.

now, if the two of you got together BEFORE the opening of the game - then he’s for sure just a little bit more open about his feelings and when i say open: i think he’s going to steal more glances and eventually just ‘ask’ if you want to take a night ‘stroll’ because he thinks that’s a date (mostly bc he thinks the less encounters with the fables the better

if you’re a mundane it’s because you know, you’re a mundane and he’s doesn’t want to expose you to the fables and vice versa. BUT if you’re a fable then, he just wants to make sure that the other fables don’t try to convince you that he’s the bad guy.

back to our regularly scheduled program, he’ll definitely be a little bit more careful with how he handles thing. like, he’s not going to throw himself out of the window with a perp but instead resort to taking physical action unless it’s absolutely necessary. he has someone at home who is expecting him to make it through the night y’know?

but the days he does manage to get a few injuries, he tries to avoid you at all costs for two reasons: one, you’re going to both smack him and lecture him while you patch him up and the other being because he doesn’t want you seeing the ugly part of his job.

after an argument he’s definitely going to buy you some random ass snack and bev to try to win u over

will also rub the back of his neck nervously and be like, “uhhhh i’m sorry? pls? forgive me? pls?”

i think he’s a touch starved kind of guy. people view him as a literal monster so no one’s going to just go up and hug him. he won’t openly admit it but he loves the cuddles. all kinds of cuddles. in bed, on the couch, in the shower - everywhere. when the two of you are home he does try to respect your boundaries and give you your space but i think he ends up touching you. 

whether it’s a hand on your lap, your head on his shoulder, legs intertwined - holding hands, he likes that reminder that you’re there. 

he likes to joke about how his hands are enormous compared to yours. spoiler alert: smaller hands or not he definitely doesn’t complain on how u use them.

you guys like to alternate whose place you sleep at and when he sleeps at your place, he likes to steal a pillow or two to take back to his to have when you’re not around.

definitely snores. and you’ve tried multiple times to kick him off the bed to get him to stop.

he loves, loves, loves the kisses you give him. all the reassuring touches + kind words like, “you did great.” or, “you’re doing the best you can.” shit like that keeps his day going.

he tries his best to not transform around you but you like to joke that he’s just a really large dog so the one day he does you’re definitely going to run your fingers through his fur. 

i think he likes to take naps on you if you’re laying on the couch + sometimes, he’ll just come over to your house to sleep. and you’re cool with it.

you definitely meal prep for him, he has a shit eating habit.

i think overall, you know what bigby needs/doesn’t need so you’ll be there for him. if he needs a shoulder, a hand to hold, someone to listen to him - you’re his girl.

and he might not have the most knowledge on relationships but he’s learning along the way. he’s really observant and tries to learn what you do/don’t like.

bonus: the first time you kiss him, i imagine the conversation going a little like this:

Okay so Raleigh, defender Illuminair, leader of the nation Astravia, and most importantly one of the three POV characters of The Last Defender, as described by his author and creator.

He's a former child soldier turned demigod and put in charge of a nation. He's brilliant enough to have completely revitalized Ionican technological development since its collapse after the last war, but also stupid enough to accidentally cause several of the major issues Ionica faces in present times. He does whatever it takes to protect his people and his family, even if this means he has to jump through some uhhh... Unsavory hoops to get there.

He's got blond hair reaching to his lower neck, vibrant blue eyes (probably with some bags of exhaustion), and paleish skin. He's often seen wearing a dark blue shirt and simple black jeans. Over that he usually wears one of two things: Either a long black coat with his nation's emblem on the shoulders, or the humble classic labcoat

He hides behind sarcasm and witty humor, gifted scientist and engineer, dutiful to his people but might be a liiiiittle bit morally gray in the very "whatever it takes sense", closeted dork, devoted to the people he cares about (read: Mainly Ayumi), probably teetering on the edge of a mental breakdown because of his trauma and memories

Link and Gordon successfully sneak out of the intelligence base. Gordon takes Link’s hand and starts taking him through some alleyways and short cuts towards a rebel base where they would be safe.
