this excerpt is from. we'll be optimistic and say the first draft of whalefall <3

“There’ll be more,” she said. She was floating, a thousand miles away, the adrenaline keeping her sky high. Her head swam with black dots, her vision going nuclear. She wanted to lay down. Sleep for a thousand years. She wanted to be back home and with her father and she wanted him to say she did a good job and she wanted — she wanted. Like that had ever mattered. Alé didn’t need any prompting. “Lucky! Willa! Get Ruhi below deck then get back up here — I want this ship out now.” The ship sprang into action. Dove sank to her knees, shoulder aching from the gun, and let her head fall to rest on the nearest crate. Her eyes slipped shut. She would have sat there for the rest of her life, just breathing, just feeling her lungs move, if Bellamy hadn’t chosen that moment to creep up beside her. “Lemme see.” “I’m fine.” She was speaking to the box. It was a miracle Bellamy could understand her at all. “Well, the blood and gunshot wound say otherwise. Let me see.” Slowly, painstakingly, Dove peeled herself away. Movement brought pain, and as Bellamy began to prod at her cheek she couldn’t help but wince. A crease fell between her eyes, lips pursing, fingers poking just a little harder. “Ow,” Dove said, like her flinching wasn’t enough. But she didn’t jerk away. And she knew Bellamy didn’t want to hurt her. She knew how to do that better than anyone. When it happened she’d feel each inch of the blade. “Just a scratch,” she said. “Tides be damned, it’s just a scratch.” Dove waited for the relief to crush her. Eyes slipped shut, unmoored, Bellamy’s cool fingers against her skin the only grounding force left. But it never came. Tremors raced up and down her spine, electric spikes of leftover energy, sapping her strength and reducing her to shivers. When Bellamy pulled her hand away, she had to bite her tongue to keep from reaching for it back. “Always knew I was lucky,” she said, voice wobbling. She swallowed and tried again, opened her eyes. “Probably won’t even scar.”

just played Time Princess story: Code Whalefall, and I love it's atmosphere and outfits! So here's some character from another game in sci-fi look

i’ve been drafting a whalefall comic on and off too… blatantly dragging and dropping characters i like as background extras into my own original projects is all fun and games until i remember the lab i put them in is about to experience some “the thing” level bullshit with no survivors. like rescuing a baby bird and nursing it back to health only to have a hawk swoop down and kill it the moment you release it back into the wild

I really liked your scorpion den fashion, so what do you think the differences are between deep palace and summer palace fashion styles? No need for pics, just words

On a real note, I DID try to answer this with words only, but as I was typing I found myself wanting to sketch some things out. Either way, I do appreciate the invitation to blabber!

So let's get right into it - in order to make this easy for myself, I started by distinguishing between deep/summer region seawings. Deep palace dwellers would likely live in the deep or mid ocean, with brighter bioluminescence and an extra head lantern (I figured they would need brighter marks for hunting aid.) By contrast, the summer palace seawing has bright, tropical colors and patterns resembling coral, sand or seawater in the light. Their bioluminescence would be more for communication than hunting, and dimmer by proxy.

An important thing to consider for both regions is practicality - seawings need to move around relatively fast in order to be both productive and comfortable. Having heavy or extensive decor would reduce streamlining while swimming, and be impractical to the everyday dragon. Of course, Royals and other high ranking seawings would probably have to suffer through the slowness in favor of extreme accessorizing.

in the summer palace teritory, fashion heavily revolves around the environment it is located in. Dragons by a coral reef would accordingly accessorize to match the vibrant atmosphere, while those living on a sandbar or seabed would stick to materials that allow them to blend in. Of course, class is important to consider: affluent dragons would be the first (and only) group to truly over-accessorize, while a working class population will stick to small satchels or trinkets that could provide some sense of use. I imagine the average shallow-water hunter will wrap kelp/other marine herbs around their ears or horns to store and use later... medicinal plants for emergency scrapes, or edible plants to snack on during the day.

Regardless, flamboyance and beauty are much more prevalent aspects of seawing fashion in shallow waters: and the population likely associate vibrant good fashion with good health, prosperity and pride in one's home.

On the other hand, dragons of the deep palace would carry a significantly different view on fashion and its place in society. Terms like 'vibrant' and 'tropical' would have next to no meaning - in such a low-light environment, the prettiest seawings would ultimately be the ones who can best make use of darkness. Of course, there would also probably be a significant portion of the population who live low enough where they don't give a shit what they look like because nobody really sees anyone else..

In terms of the actual fashion, I imagine most seawings make use of the limited resources they have: other bioluminescent creatures, rocks or bones could all act as accessories. Perhaps the biggest and oldest of dragons can even use whalefall skeletons as armor pieces. Either way, the most important aspects of design are the silhouette and the luminescence, given that those are the only things you can guarantee another dragon will be able to see. Seawings may choose to tailor their fins and wings to accommodate this, or diet using other bioluminescent creatures to increase their own glow.

That's all I have! Thank you so much for the question - it was really fun to think about, and sprouted a few other tangent ideas on border village fashion and trade between tribes.

Zigi doesn’t realize at first what he’s looking at; it appears almost organic. The airship is a tattered carcass, and the ribbons of staticky mist snatch at it and latch onto the ribs of a former balloon like hungry tentacles and worms on a whalefall.  It is surprisingly resilient to entroponetic forces. Things are supposed to be lost forever in the deep pale, but this hasn’t disappeared yet, because it has been preserved forever in the moment that he, Zygismunt Berg, inevitably finds it. Thirty or so paces away from the crashed aerostatic, light breaking through the mist finds a hillock of soft moss with a delicate icing of dew crystals on the little spherical sporangia. A dark shaft of metal, that Zigi first thinks is scrap, a pipe or an antenna, rises askew from the mossy mound, a flagpole with no flag.  Another explorer has reached this deep into the pale.

A fun fact about me is that I'm a casual pianist. The music in this game is sooo goooood! And a lot of it is piano-centric~ So, of course, I quickly became obsessed and needed it in my repertoire!

I've been working on slowly transcribing the songs by ear. This list won't have the fastest if updates since it's really time-consuming work. I: Itadori Yuki was going to have a completely normal day. Completely, totally, absolutely normal.

T: "That was just a normal house curse. It shouldn't be attacking anyone who's not threatening its territory or the people inside," Junichi said.

H: "Hey Yuki? Was it warm when you checked it earlier?" she asked.

A: "Akio-sensei? How do you and Itadori-sama know each other?" Junichi asked.

R: "Right? And she has the nicest ass I've seen in my life," Yuki shed a few tears.

P: Part of the gathered crowd gasped and fell on their faces.

Y: Yuki turned, noticing the crowd that gathered around her like hagfish circling a whalefall, low whispers echoing in the hard floors around her.
