they've been potentially changing a lot with the shadow manga, but since maria's final words to shadow were how she loves him and amy's conversation with shadow in the joypolis collab was about how he is loved, i like to think sonic team is still hinting at amy's ability to touch his heart lol
#shadamy#the only tag i'm brave enough to add it too lol#ik we still speculatin on if the manga is meant to be canon but i think it both is and isn't lol#if only for the handful of beats the manga has that line up with dark beginnings#like sonic team can go crazy go stupid and actually make that gyoro alien a thing in the game LOL#black doom having that big of a role with maria's death is Muchâą#but i've personally been reading it as both black doom and gerald fcking with shadow's memories#gerald had a lot of rage towards the humans for raiding the ark in the first place#black doom is just an asshole who wants his 'greatest creation' all for himself so he used that alien to kill maria#but gerald never knew that himself and blamed gun so he altered shadow's memories without the full context#that's how i've been thinking it's supposed to go down lol#anyway here's to hoping down the road amy will still be leading shadow down brighter paths mostly unintentionally lol#that joypolis thing showed amy wanting to stand toe to toe with sonic and shadow and may she get that focus eventually đđđ#vee is arting

"This isn't what I meant by 'bonding activities,'" Misa says.
L has his entire arm, up to the elbow, stuffed into the Jenga tower box. Light silently prays for his hand to get stuck. "Did you not say you wanted company, Amane-san?"
"Yeah, but I didn't mean with you," Misa retorts. "I said I was lonely without Light around!"
"Yes, and Light-kun is attached to me," L explains patiently. He successfully withdraws from the box; the missing Jenga piece dangles between his thumb and index finger. Damn it. "Many couples play tabletop games together."
"I don't want to be in a couple with this creep," Misa says. "You don't either, right, Light?"
Light sighs. "Misa, you're a suspect in a murder investigation. It doesn't really matter if you want to or not."
"What?! What about consent?"
Since when have you cared about consent? Light does not say aloud. Instead he says, "Whatever," because he's a nice person. "Let's just get this over with."
"Beh," Misa mumbles, but she settles down on the sofa to peer at the Jenga tower pieces L has dumped onto the table. Light and L sit opposite her; L, with uncharacteristic grace, places the last wood block on top of the pile.
"You know," Light remarks, "I'm pretty sure the pieces are already arranged as a tower when you first buy them. You didn't have to scatter them all out."
"Oops," L says without a hint of remorse.
No one moves. Eventually Light, with another sigh, leans over and starts stacking the tower up himself.
-
Light has played Jenga before, obviously. With friends during recess when it was raining outside, yeah, but more often with Sayu and Mom over the holidays. Mom is brilliant at it; Sayu's alright, but takes too many risks. Light's no strategic master, but he's also never lost, as far as he can remember â he just plays it safe and goes for the loose blocks in the middle.
Suffice it to say that this round is going to kill him.
"This should not be standing," he says in a desperate plea to the rules of physics.
Misa grins. She's only been taking blocks from the left side of the tower (and putting them on the right side, to be fair, but that should not nearly be enough to balance this structure). Even one piece in the base level is gone. "But it is!"
"Ryuzaki," Light says, gesturing at their inadvertent creation of the Leaning Tower of Pisa's inferior cousin, "how is â how?"
"Amane-san is quite a good opponent," L muses, neatly dodging his question. He leans forward with a smile, pressing his thumb into his lip. "I am honored to be playing against her."
Misa brightens. "Hey, Ryuzaki, you're not so bad!"
"I'm here too," Light mutters.
"Hmm." L tilts his head, thumb digging deeper. Light watches the way the strands of his hair fall out of and into place. "Let's seeâŠ"
Five seconds pass. Then ten.
Light, all of a sudden, realizes he's been staring at the way L's hair curls just slightly when it brushes against the nape of his neck for far too long. He drops his gaze immediately; it lands on the chain between them instead.
The chain. The chain connected to L's hand. He could end this hell with just one tug â
No, too suspicious. If he cheats at Jenga, L will surely jail him (again) for mass murder.
"Can you hurry up?" Misa crosses her arms, leaning forward. "It's only supposed to take a minute, you know."
"Not all of us have your reality-manipulating powers, Amane-san," L murmurs. His thumb has not left his lip.
"Or maybe I'm just better than you."
L's gaze flickers upward. "Did you often play Jenga in the past?"
"Not really." Misa shrugs. "My friends weren't all that into it."
"Then I find that rather unlikely." L glances back down to the pieces he's considering; Light lets himself exhale.
"No, it just means I'm a natural talent!"
Instead of responding, L reaches and plucks a piece away. It happens so fast Light has no time to blink, exactly the same way L eats sweets.
The tower wobbles and â
No. Still standing.
"Jeez," Light mutters.
"Unhappy I'm winning, Light-kun?" L puts his piece down on the top level. He puts it down vertically. (He's already placed five other pieces this way, packed together in a geometry that is apparently conducive to structural support. Light wishes he could strangle him.)
"Who says you're winning?" Light and Misa say simultaneously.
They blink at each other. Then Misa beams, putting her hand up for a high-five. Light meets it hesitantly.
"I do," L says, unconcerned. He tugs the chain. "It's your turn, Light-kun."
"I know that." Light leans forward, narrowing his eyes. Despite everything, this shouldn't be difficult. All he has to do is find a loose block, and then this tortuous game will continue on as usual.
He briefly considers collapsing the tower on purpose.
No. Light Yagami does not lose. He taps at one of the pieces; nope, load-bearing. Another one. Nope. Another â
Suddenly he's falling â wind whistles in his ears â and then he hits something bony and angular with a thump.
Light stares. He'll deny this later but he stares and stares and stares, until he finally registers that he is lying in the lap of quite possibly the second worst man alive and jolts back upright, pushing him away. "What the fuck, Ryuzaki!"
L's laugh is low and slow and amused. "I only moved my hand a little," he says. "I didn't know Light-kun could tip over so easily."
"You are cheating," Light accuses. "You wanted me to lose!"
"The tower is perfectly intact," L says. "No evidence, no crime."
Light tears his glare away from L to check. Yes, the accursed tower is still standing. Damn it all.
"That's the whole problem, isn't it," L continues. "No evidenceâŠ"
Misa slams her hands down on the table, making the tower judder. Light startles; he'd almost forgotten she was there. "You locked us up for two months and didn't even have evidence?!"
"There is plenty of evidence in your case, Amane-san." L turns to look at her. The loss of his gaze feels a bit like a punch, but a mild one that Light is not affected by whatsoever. "And besides, I was referring to Jenga."
"Well, what about my boyfriend? He neverâ"
"Just drop it, Misa," Light says. "He's not changing his mind."
For a split second, Misa glares at him. Light almost flinches â and then it's gone again, replaced with a pout. "But he's insufferable!"
"You'll only have to suffer me until we catch Kira," L says dryly. "So I suppose we'd best do that as soon as possible."
(Aizawa, muttering from the control room: "Oh, really.")
"Yeah, well, we will," Misa says. "And I bet Light's going to beat you to it, 'cause he's so much smarter than you. Right, Light?"
"It's still my turn," Light says. "If you pull me again, I'll break your nose."
"Hmm. Ten percent."
Light steadies both feet on the ground, clenches his chained hand into a fist, and reaches for the tower again.
He taps. And keeps tapping. With growing horror, he realizes that there are no loose pieces. Every level is made of just the middle block and the right block now, and none of them are pullable. Theyâre just not enough on their own.
âŠWait.
Light takes a long inhale and holds it, just in case a breath would disturb the structure. He squeezes his eyes shut, then open. He reaches for the level 75% of the way up.
Slowly, agonizingly slowly, Light uses his thumb and index finger to maneuver the middle piece into a diagonal â
There! The right piece slips out easier than butter.
Light does not indulge his first instinct, which is to yell FUCK YES!!!!!. Instead he leans back, exhales, inhales, and then puts the piece back on the top layer.
The tower does not fall.
"Your turn, Misa," Light says, attempting to school his smile from "deranged" to "enthusiastic."
Misa claps in delight. "That was amazing!"
"Interesting," L muses. "Interesting."
"What?"
"I was under the impression that moving a piece other than the one played was a rules violation," L says.
"Whâ" Light nobly does not punch him. He weighs the possibility of claiming he had never done that, but the middle block is indeed at a distinctly unnatural slant now. "That's not true. You made that up."
L leans over the side of the sofa and plucks the manual out, flipping through it carefully. "'Any blocks moved but not played should be replaced'â"
"â'unless doing so would make the tower fall,'" Light reads over his shoulder. "And it would!" The middle piece is clearly the only one holding up the entire layer. "Take that, Ryuzaki!"
L frowns. "You, Light Yagami, are a sore loser."
"I think you're the sore loser here, to be honest," Light says, faintly giddy. He could kiss someone right now.
"Your turn!" Misa says triumphantly.
They both turn to look at her. Misa has removed the other side of the base layer. The tower is now standing entirely on one block, wavering uncertainly in the faint air-con breeze.
"What the fuck," Light manages.
Misa grins. "Good luck, Ryuzaki!"

YOU can continue to treat house of the dragon as canon and YOU can continue to get upset with HOTD!charactersâ actions, take them literally, and judge their characters off of said actions. All these posts and subsequent fan art showing (incorrectly...) JC with multiple whip scars across his chest. The dude was hit once with his own clan's discipline whip. Just once. We're told as much on two separate occasions as well.
The first thing he noticed was the bloody WHIP WOUND across Jiang Chengâs chest.
Whip wound - singular...
While Wei Wuxian had never experienced this particular lashing himself, Jiang Cheng had. Wei Wuxian had wracked his brain to help him lighten that humiliating MARK, but all efforts had been fruitless. Wei Wuxian would never mistake the sight of such a scar.
Mark... Also singular...
Not only was JC only whipped once, but he then had the audacity to complain about the lasting mark on his chest to WWX... You know, the kid his mother whipped for the most insignificant of reasons? Who had multiple scars all across his back from being hit with a high-class spiritual weapon that was like lightning? Yeah, him.
Wei Wuxian, âUh-huh, thatâs right.â He felt his back, COVERED IN SCARS BOTH OLD AND NEW, and still couldnât hold back the question heâd be thinking about, âHow awfully unfair. Why is it that Iâm the only one who gets beaten up, whenever something happens?â
Literally showing and telling us WWX was physically abused on a regular basis.
I swear people just conveniently forget WWX was abused in such a way and love to make JC a martyr so that he and LWJ are "the same" by "sacrificing" so much for WWX. LWJ was whipped within an inch of his life. Thirty-three lashes of the discipline whip...and it took him three years to recover! JC mostly recovered in three days, and that was only because he was coreless! LWJ is by far stronger than JC even when they both had cores lol - there's no way JC would heal so quickly if it wasn't just one whip.
With the needle securely embedded in his head, Jiang Cheng slept for THREE DAYS. His broken bones repaired themselves and his superficial wounds smoothed over, but he was destined to never fully healâTHE LASH from the discipline whip could never be erased, and his golden core could never be recovered.
Lash - singular yet again btw...
So please, stop exaggerating his scars in an attempt to make him more "heroic" or "fragile" the dude murders people for kicks, slaps his nephew around and doesn't give a shit about an innocent toddler dying in the siege he organised ffs. Get over it lmao đ€Ł
#mdzs#mo dao zu shi#wei wuxian#canon jiang cheng#mdzs novel#lan wangji#you can't compare what jc did by distracting the wen cultivators and lwj going against his own clan to save wwx#jc did not expect the consequences and it's obvious from the text#lwj knew what he was doing and still excepted those consequences without question#oh...and usually going against your own clan is punishable by death btw...so lwj accepted his fate and still fought to save wwx

my birthday recently passed and since its my lifeâs mission to project little details of myself onto my favorite characters, i am imagining that jeremy knox doesnât like his birthday. in part due to his family never celebrating it but also because i imagine that so many bad life events happened around the time of the day or impacted it in some way.
like as a kid, either noah or joshua were born right around his birthday and everyone in the family was obsessing over the new baby and justâŠ. forgot about him. his birthday came and went and no one in his family remembered or said anything. and eventually he doesnât resent his brother for it but as a kid he did. (though, and sorry to sidetrack, imagine some tiny part of him did hold resentment over the brother that was born near his birthday. and imagine that brother being noah. and after noah dies, imagine jeremy wondering if he was subconsciously choosing not to help noah or not trying enough to get his mom to help or leaving noah in dangerous situations on purpose because of that resentment)
thatâs just the start though. he is still growing up and they say happy birthday the next year but most of the money for presents and celebration planning go to his younger brother. even young, he notices that the few presents he does receive are not things he actually likes or cares about. theyâre gifts aimed towards the stereotypical boy his age or something him parents want him to like or something he liked a year ago. nothing is personal. nothing shows that they actually care to know who he is.
and then his parents start to really fight with each other right around his birthday. jeremy had noticed tension but now theyâre beginning to argue all the time and he spends his birthday scared, hiding and worried that they might turn their anger towards him if he brings up his birthday.
thenâs the divorce. itâs a long, drawn-out process even though trent doesnât want custody because they are fighting over money and assets and of course, it overlaps with jeremyâs birthday. the day is forgotten again. there is endless tension again.
then his mom is single. and jeremy hopes that with everything settled, sheâll be happier and maybe have time and energy to love him, to remember his birthday and celebrate it. but no, sheâs still as bitter and his only gift is a card annalise makes him. he canât help but notice that itâs only her name signed at the bottom.
then mathilda is meeting warren. he watches the clock change to midnight on his birthday, kept up by sounds of her and warren having sex.
then theyâre getting married and his entire family is changing to become wilshires and surrounding his birthday is arguments about him wanting to keep knox as his last name. no birthday wishes. no birthday presents.
then heâs coming out, or maybe forced out, and his family is too disgraced by the news to even look at him, much less entertain a birthday.
but then maybe itâs okay one year. maybe everything is okay. he canât really feel anything but thatâs alright, itâs better this way. better for the days to blur together in his drug-riddled mind then for him to even notice his own birthday.
and then every birthday becomes a cruel reminder of ages that noah will never reach. he shouldnât be allowed to celebrate his birthday. he shouldnât even get to have one because surely noah dying was all his fault.
how many birthdays do you think heâs spent crying? how many do you think heâs spent hating himself or being made to hate himself? this is not to say that his relationship with his birthday canât change and become positive. im sure having caring friends in college helps him enjoy aspects of the day even as he is drowning himself in guilt and grief. they will be buoys in the ocean for him and will give him gifts filled with love that show how deeply they know him. and jean will come to be an addition to the list of people for jeremy to see people loving him and wanting to celebrate his life. but i cannot help but imagine how awful his birthday couldâve been for him
#good morning have some angst#thought about if jeremy knox ever cried on his birthday and then made it so he would cry or feel terrible on every birthday#youâre welcome đ„°#even without all my additions he absolutely feels miserable on his bday every year post noah#for the rest of his life any reminder of how old he is acts as a reminder of noahâs death and how he will never age#that misery that pain is absolutely canon#if i had to think about it so do you#jeremy knox#aftg headcanon#aftg#tsc

Canonically speaking, jc' reaction to someone he doesn't like/has strong negative feelings towards, because that person was a jerk to his sister, is to regulate his emotions according to how his sister feels. In a jyl lives au, after wwx's return, canon jc is going to his sister, saying something like: 'while I think we should throw at least a cup of tea at him because he left us you and a-ling like that, it's your choice, jin zixuan was your husband. What are we feeling now, jiejie?'
#I was reading a jyl live and in the notes the author wrote: 'I made jc & wwx meeting as painful as possible'. Why would you do that lol. jyl#jzx's wife- is right there. shouldn't she the one to be mad? no obv. she says to jc to back off and stop being a jerk lol#canon jc rebuild his sect and co-raised his wonderful nephew. Without no one but himself. A jc with his sister by is side is the healthiest#dude out there. The fact imo it's that most of jyl lives au aren't about jyl#Her life wasn't about her. Her childhood wasn't about her. Her death wasn't about her#Let at least her survival be about her lmao#jzx should divorce fanon jyl tbh and marry jc lol#Imo it boils down to people thinking that be mad about a loved one's death/lying make you the devil#Which is a bit strange#Or maybe it's that in a jyl lives au you kinda have to acknowledge how hurtful wwx's actions were. A crime in this fandom.#mar!nonsense

actually i still have thoughts building on my interpretation of the timeline question from this timeline post
two main things. first, what Isabeau says about his Change

it's a metaphorical death, of course. Isabeau is still alive and did not literally, physically kill himself in order to Change. but even so, the person he "would" have been without that Change is "dead." he's still him, he's always been him, the kid he was is still in there but he's still Isabeau. there is only one timeline.
but, second, it's like. sometimes you remember a turning point in your lifeâan opportunity you took or didn't take. a coincidence that led to you meeting your best friend, or a choice that led to some of the darkest moments of your life, or a circumstance that you could have never controlled at all that, nevertheless, you can see how it shaped you as you are now, for better or for worse.
and maybe sometimes you are overwhelmed with something about how your life as it is now. and you find yourself mourning, deeply and sincerely, something that never existed. the death of that possibility, that "timeline" where you made a different choice, were born into a different family, had met a different person, had met the same person but at a different time.
would you be happier? would you still be "you"? would it be better if you weren't? would you be better?
there's no way to know. you are you, and have always been you. there is only one timeline.
...but for Loop...they make a choice, and their continuity is cut. they become the circumstances that change how the story plays out. they get to watch, from the outside, the "what if" scenario that would have led them to the happiness they sought.
it doesn't matter if the party or the world "literally" died and were rewritten in the wake of their wish. they are mourning something that never existedâa world where they are the one who is embraced and accepted without hesitation by a party who knows them. the party that could have given them that is dead, the version of themself that could have had that is dead, they are removed from the happy "what-if" even as it plays out before them. the grief and guilt are real even if the deaths are metaphorical.
there is only one timeline, but they can never again be THE Siffrin who loves their party instead of A Siffrin who changed beyond recognition. their choice destroyed something they can never get back. a party who loved them, and not their replacement. they're dead, they're gone, they're replaced with people who only know to turn that love towards someone else who wears their face.
but of course, of course the opportunity for reconnection still exists. no matter what details change, no matter if the party from the Prologue and the party from ISAT are the same exact people or some rewritten version of them, the fundamental cores of them prevail. and they are predisposed towards loving each other. their happiness is still within reachâit will just look different than they had thought.
#mypost#cw sui mention#i guess. metaphorical mostly#isat spoilers#in stars and time spoilers#as i said in the tags of the post i linked. i LIKE exploring the differences between the prologue and isat#and even ramping them up more than what is evident when you actually compare the games#but as far as loop's feelings/how to interpret canon goes--i don't think it makes that much of a difference?#like. Siffrin is going to feel guilty for Bonnie's death Forever. and that 'technically never happened' either#but there was a timeline where it Did#likewise there WAS a timeline where the whole party looked at saapfrin and saw Siffrin#and that party no longer exists.#they never will again. not in the way they used to even after reintroductions are made#it will Always be different#BUT we DO have the prologue game to reference and personally i think there are enough differences to not just say they're identical#even accounting for the House getting progressively more mixed up deeper into the loop count#all this to say like.........i interpret the 'deaths' that Loop talks about as simultaneously real and metaphorical#and not exclusively one or the other#the details are different in the prologue = they legitimately WERE 'different' people to some minute extent#the details reshuffled as a result of loop's wish = the 'death' of the people Loop knew/who knew Loop on a cosmic and metaphorical scale#also i hope none of this comes across as like. confrontational or anything somehow towards the op of that post#genuinely happy to read it and get different insights that made me think more deeply about my own perspective!#god why do i write two posts every time i write a post. a million lines of tag clarifications always#i didn't dwell much on the Isabeau portion but it's like. his choice was deliberate and purposeful and he STILL saw it as a 'death'#of COURSE Loop is going to see this thing they did to OTHER PEOPLE that irrevocably changed the course of their lives#ACCIDENTALLY AND WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT#as 'killing them' in some way. in some ways it's the same as ANY loop reset where they get rewritten#but in others it's so so much bigger than that.#more final than dying and going back to how they were.

Chapter 121, Callisto kisses Penelope, giving her artificial respiration to prevent her from choking on water in the sea.
Chapter 162, Callisto kisses Penelope as if he could breathe life into her by doing so.
Calliope once again broke the hearts of readers.
In the first example, Callisto hugs Penelope tightly, as if thereby saving her from danger. From that limit to plunge into the darkness of the sea bottom, which means her end.
In the second example, his hands are gently caressing Penny's pale face and stroking her hair. A more intimate and desperate gesture.
Congratulations to all readers on the end of season 4! Thanks, SUOL-nim! And wish her a good rest!
Also, thanks @leila-li-rui for correcting the post! I got the metaphor wrong, I'm so clumsy-... I love you!!
#villains are destined to die#death is the only ending for a villainess#death is the only ending for the villainess#death is the only ending for the villain#vadd#vadd spoilers#vadd new chapter#vadtd#ditoeftv#manhwa#callisto regulus#penelope eckhart#penelope eckhart x callisto regulus#calliope our beloved#calliope canon#calliope otp#i could say raise the issue of the absence of actively consenting to kiss a person without permission...#but.........#callisto was intent on saving penelope's life.....#soâ#yes.

an incomplete list of terrible but extremely popular Our Flag Means Death takes that I would like to never see again please
(and I do mean popular, as in, lots of people seem to think they're canon, to the point where I feel slightly insane and like I was watching a different show to everyone else)
1. Ed's mum was loving and nice and supportive, if hampered by her bad situation
this comes up more in fic than analysis, to be fair, but good god, what show were some of you watching? this isn't to vilify her, because yeah, she's clearly a product of colonialism, white christian supremacy, and domestic abuse, but like. that doesn't make how she raised Ed good. clearly she was trying to keep him safe, but "we don't deserve nice things", and especially "it's not up to us, it's up to god", speaks to me of someone who squashes down any ambition on her son's part, has fully bought into the lies of christian colonialism, and tries to pass them down to her son.
as does happen in colonised communities, particularly among older generations. I know us white people like to think that every indigenous person is a perfect left-wing anti-imperial activist, but that's simply not the case, and Ed's mum is so clearly an example of an older conservative christian indigenous parent who had to believe the lies told by their coloniser in order to survive, but is now passing on that trauma to their children. and I just...
if I read one more fic where Ed's mum is a perfect loving supportive angel who always believed in her kid and always supported and protected him, I'm gonna scream. yes, it's sweet, and it's fun to sometimes veer from canon and give your blorbo nice things, but it's still veering from canon. and yet, I see very few people acknowledge that, or actually talk about the nuances of Ed's mother, and how she definitely tried to protect him, but was far from sweet, doting, and unconditionally supportive.
2. Ed's loving look when Stede is picking food from his beard in 1x07
like most of these things, I enjoyed it as a joke or exaggeration at first, until I realised that people were actually being serious. but every time I watch that scene, I see Ed looking absently-mindedly over Stede's shoulder, because a) that's what you do when someone leans in to pick something off you, and b) surely the point of the scene is that they're so comfortable and easy together that they don't notice the intimacy of what they're doing, but Lucius, an outside observer, thinks it's obvious. right?? I can't be the only one seeing it???
[sigh]
anyway. finally, the really really big one:
3. Ed is a soft uwu babygirl princess femme bottom sub who loves her cat collar and is teaching Stede how to dom him in the "say you're the captain" scene
I mean, there's not much to say except to link to duke's absolutely phenomenal twitter thread about "how the 'babygirlfication' and infantilization of ofmd ed teach is an extension of racist perceptions of indigenous men being inherently violent and thus needing to be emasculated to be considered sympathetic"
but especially That One Fucking Scene, good lord. talk about taking shit out of context. everyone looked at a slowed-down gif of one shot in the trailer and cried "babygirl!! he's such a simp, he just wants to be dommed!!", when actually that scene is about how a) Stede is cringefail and terrible at being a typical harsh, commanding pirate, and b) Ed is lovingly embarrassed by this. he encourages Stede to assert himself (and give Ed something to do during his probation/help him make amends with the crew), but like. normally. he's acting perfectly normal in that scene, and mostly annoyed by the outfit and embarrassed by how badly Stede fails. but just because he's sitting down while Stede is standing, and he happens to take a breath in that one shot (because, you know, people breathe sometimes), everyone's doubled down on their "submissive babygirl" bullshit, and I can't get the fuck away from it.
which - listen, it's fun for me, too! it's fun to explore exaggerated aspects of a character, it's fun to read/write/draw that angle in smut, I get it! but I keep seeing people keep claim it's literally canon, and I cannot stress enough that that is Straight Up False. for the love of god, please just watch the show without your (potentially kinda racist) bias glasses on, and remember to treat the characters with respect instead of projecting onto their every interaction a shallow dom/sub binary just because you find it hot.
Our Flag is a show very specifically about masculinity, and what it means to be a man; how assumptions about that can harm and restrict men; and how men can grow beyond them. it's a nuanced and sympathetic examination of this. the whole point is that Ed is allowed to like nice fabrics and be tired of violent piracy and still be a man. the point is that two men fall in love - equal, honest, sincere love - and are still men, still exactly who they are.
(on that note, insisting that Ed is canonically trans or femme because of these things often ends up just leaning into gendered stereotypes: men are harsh and active and dominant, and women are soft and passive and submissive, and if Ed's not the former, he must be the latter, right? it also tends to hetero-ify the central relationship, casting Stede as "the boy" and Ed as "the girl", needing one to be masc and one femme. not always, and again, I understand and have enjoyed transformative works that take those elements and run with them, and explore what the story could be like if Ed were trans/nb/etc - but it's still a transformative interpretation. it's not canon.)
relatedly: those fucking wedding toppers! it seemed blatantly obvious to me that half the point of those scenes was that Ed is distraught and blaming himself for Stede leaving because he wasn't the ideal partner. it's his entire arc for the first half of season 2! Ed hates himself and believes there's something wrong about him that makes him unlovable. so he keeps and then discards the wedding toppers, painting himself onto one of them, because he's projecting himself onto an image of ideal/successful romantic love that he thinks Stede wants, and in which he doesn't fit. he's trying to mould himself into someone else to make himself lovable, not realising that Stede already loves him for himself.
so it's important to the whole narrative that Ed's yearning for/projection onto the wedding toppers is false, and born from his insecurity. he gets drunk, and play-acts a stereotypical image of romantic happiness into which he doesn't fit, but real love looks nothing like that, because real love isn't found in stifling hegemonic cultural structures, but honest, emotional connections between people allowed to be their whole, vulnerable selves. Stede is not like the groom, and Ed is not like the bride, because they shouldn't have to be. Ed should not (and does not) have to warp himself into a demure bride in order to be worthy of love: he's already lovable and loved exactly as he is! that's the point!! of the scene!!!!!!
like, it's important that the groom figure isn't actually like Stede, either. yes, it's blond and has a nice, peach-coloured suit, but a) Stede was very specifically unhappy in the posh, heterosexual, married state the figures represent, and b) Stede by this point looks nothing like that figurine. it's directly contrasted with the image of him in the rowboat, scruffy and plain and earnestly in love, rather than fancy, cold ceramic.
[EDIT 29/12/24: I ended up writing a whole Twitter essay about the wedding cake toppers that I then gussied up for Tumblr; so if you want a clearer, more substantial, and better supported argument about those, check that out!]
but no, I have to wade through swathes of art and fic and meta about how badly Ed wants to be a sweet little demure kitty princess, how he wants a wedding night and a ring to prove he's Stede's property, and acting as if this is somehow canon, because people on the internet have zero reading comprehension and are scared of brown men.
the whole point of Our Flag is that you don't need to compress yourself into prescribed social roles, and in fact, doing so will only make you miserable; and that racist, patriarchal, colonial institutions should be resisted and dismantled at every opportunity.
so tell me again why the ultimate message is that Ed and Stede should get married under an arch in front of an altar and their lined-up friends, with flowers and rice falling around them, all dressed in white, one in a suit and one in a dress, with rings and a kiss and a honeymoon after, before they move into a detached house with a yard and a fence and re-adopt the kids that Stede abandoned? and this isn't about promises, fidelity, or even monogamy - I'm specifically talking about everyone in this fandom who seems to think that the ultimate goal is the most stereotypical 20th century cisheteropatriarchal christian wedding, but with the name "matelotage" slapped on top, as if that takes away all of the underlying baggage.
just - I know we're all meant to hate men and masculinity and yadda yadda yadda, but actually, to be earnest for a second, men deserve respect too, because all people and all genders do. and two men are allowed to be in a relationship and still both be men - complex men, with their own, layered relationships to their gender - without having to fall into neatly-arranged dom/sub masc/femme roles, or seal the deal with a hegemonically-approved ceremony.
so please, stop reducing an indigenous lead character to a caricature of a femme uwu princess bottom just because he has long hair, wore a robe once, and you're too scared of brown men to imagine him with proper agency. and then please, for the love of god, stop claiming that that interpretation is canon.
#I can't tag this for my own blog organisation without putting it in the wider fandom tag so uuuhhhhhh#sorry to everyone who sees this but fair warning I'm being very critical of some popular fandom trends. dnr if you wanna avoid negativity.#Our Flag Means Death#gender stuff#Togas does meta#it's not an accident that all of these are about ed -_- i s2g some of y'all just CANNOT be normal about that man...#this was actually going to be a fairly concise post but then i decided fuck it i'm putting that whole last rant in writing#it's been building for a long time. and i've said lots of it irl before lol#it always feels sorta vaguely transmisogynistic but i s2g that's not the point#again i'm all here for trans reinterpretations and you can get off to whatever smut you like but they remain that: reinterpretations#they're not canon and stop saying that they are.

say what you want about the death note movies but the fact that they decided to give takada a backstory of harassment in the workplace and stolen researches and to make her take higuchi's role in the plot was so inspired
#she was so much more better characterized than in the manga#without necessarly being a likable character#death note#kiyomi takada#anyway her making a disastrous intership with sakura tv is a canon thing even in the manga for me now
