And the argument always comes down to like, well it was a high stress sitch and I wouldn’t want to be judged for what I did in that situation and Kevin was not wrong for leaving and Jean would not have gone with him. 1.) Kevin was not wrong for leaving and 2.) everyone who can comprehend literature could comprehend that Jean would not have gone with him. Jean tells us. Kevin tells us. But Kevin ALSO says he knew what Riko would do to Jean as soon as Riko realized he left. And I’ll give him the French slip up because breaking a bone hurts like a MF and I imagine it was in panic and pain, but asking Jean to distract Riko while he left was a choice he made. And maybe it was made out of desperation but he still made it. And that choice had real consequences on Jean. That was the argument and no one ever wants to focus on that part of it

I also think, that if we did not have this series, and Jean was still doomed to commit suicide at the end of the first trilogy, the argument here would be different. Sure, we as readers know that Kevin gets out and a year later so does Jean. But when Kevin made Jean make that promise, he did not plan on EITHER of them getting out. As far as Kevin was concerned, they would both be ravens and graduate as ravens and eventually be court. So yeah, the promise Kevin makes Jean make is selfish. Death was Jean’s only way out. So you could argue that Kevin made him make it out of love, but if you truly love someone you do not force them through torture like that.

AND, On top of this, even in the worse case scenario, Kevin still had somewhere to go. Jean did not. I’m too lazy to go find the exact quote but when Jean is on the phone with wymack in TSC, he says something like Kevin always said you’d take him in. I called him a dreamer.

I am just so sick of people acting like Kevin was Jean’s savior and Jean should be eternally grateful and in love with him for it. AND WHILE WE’RE HERE. Can I bring up the news articles about Jeremy??????? “They were supposed to be warnings Jean” “if we wait for you to read it we’ll be here all day” . Why would u give someone news articles to read in English as WARNINGS when you know he cannot read English that well?? Why would u not warn him VERBALLY. in say, maybe, the LANGUAGE HE SPEAKS SINCE U LEARNED IT. Or even verbally in English!!!!!!!!!!!

And I’m not really that mad at him for the conversation with Jeremy because I don’t think at heart Kevin believes being gay means you’re like horribly wrong and against god and deserve to be raped. I do think he was simply explaining the logic of the nest to Jeremy. But the fact that he helped out with nothing makes me insane. And I get the only reason Zane and Colleen (?) helped were because Jean helped them first. But you couldn’t get involved in there too?

here’s the thing about thea calling it jeans “old tricks.” we’re given more than ample clues to fill in the blanks. jean refused to let anyone else in the nest know he was raped. he and kevin painstakingly covered up after riko because they were too proud to let anyone in on the abuse they faced. thea has no reason to suspect assault— ive said it before, but there’s no crime unless jean speaks up.

i see the claim that jeremy knew it was statutory rape so thea should have, but jeremy is in california, from california, born & raised. the age of consent is 18, as opposed to 16 in west virginia. jeremy is operating under a different legal framework. but look at the scene as a whole: it’s not important that jeremy believes it was statutory rape, because that accusation leads to jeans revelation that he never consented. it may not have been statutory under west virginia law, but it was rape. thea and jean have never had that conversation, and if jean has it his way they never will.

thea looks at jean and she has no reason to see a victim, but every reason to see a teenager she cares about making bad decisions that hurt him. jean himself tells her they were just mistakes. that’s how her “old tricks” sentence comes across. she’s tired. it sets her apart from the rest of the ravens— that’s far more compassion than any of the current line up gave him.

Back on my annotated reread of TSC and thinking abt how Jean's reaction to Laila when he hits her isn't just about being touched unexpectedly.

It's because it's his neck.

It is specifically because it's 'something warm and wet against his injured neck'.

It's because it's literally happening in the middle of a conversation in which Cat just suggested Jean meet in person with Grayson.

Like as much as people can be upset he hit her or didn't immediately apologise (also tho like. Did we read the same book? It literally has it right there that apologising is not how this kinda thing is handled in the nest. Why would Jean think to do that here??) can you really be surprised that those circumstances triggered his fight response? Like really?

one of my favorite things about kevjean (particularly kevjean while they were at the nest) is how it doesn’t really matter whether or not it was requited — nothing would change either way. a kevin that does return jean’s feelings is hardly different from a kevin that does not. there may be a world where it’s completely reciprocated, but there is no world in which that makes any significant change in their dynamic. they are ravens, and the ravens have rules, and the rules must be followed because if they are not ravens then they are nothing. maybe they were both in love. maybe they weren’t. does it matter? there is only one way this story can go. you can change the variables as much as you’d like but the ending will always stay the same

Where do you think Jeremy’s official documents are and how will he get them back?

Either his parents have them stashed in a lockbox at the bank, or they're being kept at their workplace (the hospital).

Either way, I strongly suspect that William knows where they are and will also have a hand in helping Jeremy get them back.

I'm also considering the very real possibility that Jeremy *doesn't* get his original documents back from his parents. In fact, it's possible at some point that Jeremy chooses to walk away without any of it, consequences be damned. It's also possible Jean will discover Jeremy's predicament, and will leverage his connections (Neil or the FBI or both) to get Jeremy new copies of all his documents.

It would be very fitting for Jean to take a leaf out of Neil's book and use negotiation tactics to save Jeremy (much in the same way Neil used similar tactics to protect Jean).

I don't know if I've seen this said yet, and maybe no one else other than me is thinking it, but here goes:

I can't wait to read Nora's The Sunshine Court. TSC is a lovely gift from an author ten years later, and she has every right to do with her characters as she wishes. They are hers, and we'll be lucky to see her vision of the characters she created a decade ago.

But it's also true that we have ten years of fandom making up for lost time. Ten years of running with the tiniest crumbs of canon to weave tales and art of Jean Moreau, Jeremy Knox, and the Trojans. So regardless if Nora makes Jerejean frenemies, platonic, romantic, or other - please don't remove your works just because they don't fit canon anymore.

There are tons of lovely fics, art pieces, podcasts and more out there about the romantic entanglements of Jerejean, Kevjean, Keremy, Kerejean, Laila/Dermott and more. There are multiple stories of growth and friendship and healing between Jean and Jeremy. Of reconciliation and forgiveness and discovery between Jean and Kevin. Of angst and loss and bittersweet dissonance between Kevin and Jean. Of found family and freedom and coming together despite your differences between Jean and the Trojans.

They are still good, they are still worthy, and they are still someone's favorite. Don't squash your creativity or become ashamed if your take on Jean, Jeremy, or the Trojans was different than what Nora pictured. You explored and created something wonderful in a time when there was no canon to follow. You should be proud of what you wrote (or drew or recorded). Just remember there were tons of folks out there that enjoyed them right along with you and would be greatly disappointed if you removed them just because you thought no one would appreciate them anymore.
