Here’s an LONG ASF infodump about the CPPS I play! The name is Club Penguin Dimensions, my current hyperfixation!
I know how to recognize more than 21 different ciphers to help my friends solve enigmas and such, because playing a Brazilian Club Penguin Private Server moderated by nerds and Gravity Falls fans, I don’t get the privilege of just being casually interested in Club Penguin anymore…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For reference, the guy called CDPI is Raul, a character controlled by the admins and is kinda like our very own Cucurucho… He appears randomly in parties or missions or even hangouts when the server is active (kinda rare because the community is very small but it can happen) and speaks in ciphers and morse code, usually giving us a tease about future events or what the CDPI (Council of The Interdimensional Penguins) has been up to…
Tumblr media
There’s also a 125 pages long google docs about the lore (the code and deciphering part, not the actual history lore), it’s still unfinished and doesn’t contain all the codes, and the server has also been alive for only like- One year and a half? Crazy stuff. The list for all the codes that have been used in the game’s lore goes like this:
- Morse Code;
- Galactic Alphabet;
- EPF Secret Code;
- Hidden messages in an audio’s spectrogram;
- ASCII;
- Hidden messages if you edit and photoshop images by changing brightness, saturation and all;
- Braille;
- Nautic Signaling (I think that’s the name? Idk);
- Caesar Cipher;
- Author’s Cipher (from Gravity Falls);
- Steam games ID;
- Base 64;
- Bar Codes and QR Codes;
-!Links on Imgur;
- Binary Code;
- Decimal Binary Coding;
- Masonic Cipher;
- A1Z26 Cipher;
- Jefferson Cipher;
- And the most recent enigma also had Atbash Cipher.
We also got like- 4 Exclusive mascots! Well, one of them is kinda “side character turned mascot”, but you get my point!
Here’s Angie
Tumblr media
She’s the newbie working at Club Penguin News, and she’s known for being energetic sunshine and a conspiracy theorist nut! She can go on and on about gnomes for hours and is very passionate about gossiping. Just a cutie pie!
Next we have Bambadee!
Tumblr media
Yes! This IS Bambadee! The one guy from the Stowaway Story? So, he went through a bit of a redesign, and his story also went a bit different than his original counterpart… After his first encounter with Rockhopper, he became a part of the Migrator’s crew, constantly adventuring with Rockhopper and Yarr and residing in Rockhopper Island when they’re not out in the seas
And since he’s confirmed he’s an orphan after bawling his eyes out after someone asked if he has parents in one of his meetups, I headcanon that he sees the captain as a father figure. Bambadee is like- My 2nd favorite mascot, he’s very kind and gentle, but always has a brave attitude that inspires and captivates others. He also has a very strong sense of justice, being very protective of his friends… He’s also canonically in the aromantic spectrum.
Here we got Sunny Morinson!
Tumblr media
Sunny is the coolest- A very skilled and dedicated EPF agent that may be one’s of the agency’s best assets. She’s very calm and collected, usually appearing to guide us through EPF missions or to just chill in the coffee shop- She’s a proper coffee addict, works as barista, her best friend is G Billy, and she hangs out with the Penguin Band in the downtime… All the artworks for her events are so pretty istg I love her…
Now, this next guy right here is Guido
Tumblr media
Guido is a nice, but overall very mysterious guy. He’s an icon here in Brazil since he’s probably the first brazil exclusive mascot ever created (back when Club Penguin Brasil was still alive), but anyways, he’s and interdimensional traveler and uses his clock to do so, he’s friendly but very lonely, also has the tendency to being shy in front of thera and just being very reserved. He’s also a pretty big deal in the lore, as in the story, when the og island was fated to die along with everyone that didn’t migrate to Club Penguin Island, Guido along with Gary and Rory created a portal to the new island. Guido also has some connections with interdimensional gods and creatures, with me personally theorizing he’s got some secret connections with >v>
And last, we got Ettore Salvaore!
Tumblr media
This guy… Is a lot-
Think of Stanford from Gravity Falls but if he was greedy, that’s Ettore. He’s and EPF agent, Gary’s main assistant, a genius in his own right, owner of the PuffleBerry Mall, loves theater and plays and is a time travel fanatic. He’s very morally grey in his actions having caused two disasters in the island because of his power-hungry tendencies. He summoned Scorn after stealing Guido’s clock for time traveling shenanigans at the Medieval Party and made a deal with Box Cipher (yeaa Summerween event was WILD), got possessed in the process and almost destroyed the whole island till the EPF rescued him. He’s kind of an asshole but one of my favs with how charming and elegant he can be while being total boyfailure material lol (he’s also canonically bi)
And those were the exclusive characters! They appear on the island periodically along with other mascots, and also worth noting that Rory is a mascot and the Penguin Band very fleshed out characters and motives in here-
Also noticed how we have a lot of LGBTQ+ characters? Yea we got a gay dimension with a gay catalogue too, accessible through the Box Dimensions main room. It’s very pretty!
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
This post is already getting pretty long and Tumblr has a limit of pictures apparently, so I’ll just give these fun facts and wrap this up-
- The mods like showcasing the relationships between the characters, so the mascots make reference to their friends all the time and also appear in groups for major events like (Penguin Band + Angie), (Rockhopper + Bambadee), (Dot + Sunny + Rookie + Stompin’ Bon) for example;
- There are constant additions of codes that can give you all sorts of outfits for your penguin. I personally love using the spiderman clothes or wolverine costume when I’m not rocking the dino hoodie;
- Jetkie is heavily implied canon;
- Club Penguin Dimensions has a version of Bill Cipher called Box Cipher, he’s been promised to return ever since his appearance last year at the Summerween event, where he caused chaos among the island and caused a bunch of interdimensional ruckus (FNAF animatronics and The Mystery Shack and a final boss after the 6 EPF missions you had to do in this party made it my favorite original content of Club Penguin Dimensions ever);
- There’s this one artist that always manages to sneak in a Sonic referencein the arta he makes for the game- Last I checked, the shape of Sonic was foind in Stompin’ Bob’s background art for the Teen Beach Movie event and as a pin in Guido’s bag these last few months;
- There’s a crew of content creators that go live and do videos on Club Penguin Dimensions and it’s lore and events, they’re called “Cream Soda”;
- In March 2024, an original part called “A Cabotagem” happened where Bambadee came to Club Penguin to recruit help in his search for the missing Captain Rockhopper, and after weeks of exploring different islands with Bambadee in the Migrator, we found out the Captain was kidnapped! With an animation called “ O Sequestro de Rockhopper - A Grande Revelação” being released a few months after explaining how the Captain was kidnapped and why, pretty cool stuff.
Anyways, I think that’s it for now. If there’s anyone actually reading this, just know that all I said didn’t cover half of the plot, and if you have any questions about it, feel free to use my ask box, I’m so sad that there’s not a lot of brazilians on tumblr, especially after twitter died, I could talk about these penguins for hours lol

On the Gravity Falls audio commentaries Alex Hirsch mentions that the series doesn't take place in any particular year. As he felt that the show would become automatically dated if they set it in the present day.
Now while I like that concept, it doesn't really hold up lore wise as there is a running gag in Boyz Crazy where one of the boy band members keeps screaming out "2013!" whenever he does something.
Though to be fair, Hirsch does mention on that episode's commentary track that he regrets having that joke be in the finished episode. But even if that joke wasn't in the episode, smartphones end up becoming a thing in season two. Not to mention the fact that a lot of in universe references to the internet started being made during that season as well.
I personally think that Gravity Falls has aged a lot better when compared to other shows as it didn't rely too heavily on plots that revolved around technology that was new at the time of production.
Yes, the show did feature pop culture references, but the writers never used said references as a crutch when it came to the show's humor. But then again, the boy band plot in Boyz Crazy does feel super dated now that boy bands stopped being a thing. But I never felt like that ruined the show for me.

Time warp song analysis
This was part of the mega theory but im aware some people would like it on its own so here you go! Also sorry for the hiatus still working on shock treatment kinda lost my notebook ):
Time Warp is one of the most well-known songs to come out of the Rocky Horror Picture Show even a first time Rocky Horror watchers can do a jump to the left and a step to the right. But putting dance moves aside the song shows how the Transylvanians arrived on Earth and the foreshadowing to the backstabbing of Riff Raff and Magenta.
Riff Raff line “I’ve got to keep control” initially read to me as Riff Raff trying to grab Brad and Jannet’s attention however, through my countless re-watches of the movie I’m believing Riff Raff saw Brad and Jannet as a stop to his and Magentas plans. For example, in the film's entirety we can see Riff Raff and Magenta plot with each other through a hand signal they do repeatedly. We also see them sabotage Frank N Furter's plans letting Rocky go while indirectly stopping Frank from “entertaining” Brad. Another theory I have for Frank N Furter's original mission is to enslave humanity and the reason he made Rocky was to be desirable for all, making it easier for him to manipulate others for the benefit of the Transylvanians. Here, Brad and Jannet would be the test subjects and I believe if Frank wasn’t interrupted his mission would have been successful as he would have blackmail to hold over Brad and Jannet’s making them his new human slaves which could allow him to use them as bate for the rest of humanity.
“The blankness would hit me and the void would be calling” is a reference to the time warp/ Blackhole they traveled through to get to Earth. For example, for around 100 years physicists have known of time warp in fact the space between the Earth and the sun is a sort of time warp. Einstein argued that gravity is the property of curving space and time. Blackholes can dilate time however once you get to the point called the event horizon whatever you brought with you can’t come back. The following line “let’s do the time warp again” shows the Transylvanians wanting to go back but waiting on Franks “audio vibratory physio-molecular transport device” to get them back waiting for him to finish (ha) so they can regain control and go back to Transylvania shooting their matter through space and time.
Another bit of evidence into enslaving humanity is the quote “in another dimension with voyeuristic intention”. Voyeuristic is a word which wasn't priorly in my vocabulary but the definition goes: relating to or denoting sexual pleasure gained from watching others when they are naked or engaged in sexual activity.
Now Columbia's verse is a can of worms. In summary, it explains how Columbia became a groupie for Frank N Furter. “A snake of a guy gave me an evil wink” Could link to the biblical story in the Garden of Eden. God warns Adam and Eve not to take from the tree of knowledge lying to them both saying they would “surely die”. However, the serpent tempts Eve stating “your eyes will be opened and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil” Eve eats from the tree and gives some to Adam. God bans them from the garden of Eden. This mirrors what happened to Brad and Jannet, seeing only the good in the world but being exposed to the restricted, increasing their curiosity and changing their life forever. Which makes me think Columbia was a relatively normal person before she got abducted. “time meant nothing never would again” allows us to infer that Columbia can’t remember how long she’s been there falling into a depression as everything gets ripped away from her or time moving differently in the mansion.
Richard O'Brien is a master of foreshadowing. What else could we be missing in his writing?

The Progression of Failed Love - A STARSET Playlist
Y’all ever make a playlist before? That shit is so much fun. Using the music by your favorite artists and ordering them in such a way that portrays your own idea or story... I love it, and I’ve only just started doing it. It’s a very unique way to creatively express yourself. Now that I’ve hyped my audience up, it’s time to break all of your hearts by sharing my playlist of STARSET songs called “The Progression of Failed Love” which follows the story of a typical young couple who just couldn’t make it work. Yes I know, this is a dumb movie trope told a million times and blah blah blah, but this is my blog so deal with it ya fuckin’ dorks… of course I’m kidding, and in all seriousness, this was the most genuine playlist I was able to make. I have my own personal connection to it, and if you’ve had a relationship before, you’ll most likely find a way to connect to it. I enjoy it, and I hope you do as well.
The playlist’s first three songs in order are “Satellite”, “DIE FOR YOU”, and “Starlight”, and they encompass the honeymoon stage of a budding relationship. Let’s call these songs Act I of this story. “Satellite” to me really embodies the feeling one gets when they first fall for someone. The energy is high and all you can think about is what you would do for this individual, with lyrics that support this idea greatly:
“Satellite! Shine on me tonight!
I will be your gravity, I will stay and never leave…
My satellite! Are you here tonight?
Shine your light and set me free.
Take the darkness out of me.
Shine on me!”
The relationship hasn’t started yet, but the interest is growing like crazy. These lyrics hit hard, check out the rest of them here:
STARSET – Satellite Lyrics
“DIE FOR YOU” is just a more intense version of “Satellite” within the context of this story, but it makes sense because this song represents when the relationship is now official. Both parties have fallen for each other, and the love is starting to run deep. The whole vibe of the song is much more intimate, with a calmer kit part (hot damn Adam Gilbert you are smart with writing your kit parts), but yet the same exact key and even a similar tempo. The songs are so similar, yet so different, and it’s really smart. Kudos to STARSET for this, and as a personal benefit, it makes the story of this playlist flow really well.
Starset - Die For You (Official Audio)
“Starlight” is a very specific moment in time, and marks the end of the honeymoon phase. The couple is stargazing, and the sky is just beautiful. I see many colors and galaxies in the night sky when listening to this song. The only thing is, they aren’t physically together. Their lives have picked up, and while they can’t be with each other at the moment, they still love each other very much, so they stargazed on a phone call. They are sad that they have to spend less time together, but they reassure each other that they love the other person very much, and that they are inseparable. This song has a very special place in my heart, as it’s just a beautiful song that makes me think a lot. I get a little heartsick listening to it, as it makes me think about memories that are dear to me, but it fits this spot perfectly in my playlist story.
Starset - Starlight (Official Lyric Video)
The honeymoon period has now concluded and we are moving into Act II of this story, where problems arise. This act starts with the song “Telepathic”, which has a frustrating feel to me. The song is from the perspective of only one of the characters, as they feel their significant other expects them to be a mind reader and won’t share emotions by just talking about them. As I’m sure a lot of people understand, this is infuriating to deal with, as it just makes people typically want to slam their head through a fuckin’ brick wall. At the same time, this character is very easily read by their significant other, as they wear their heart on their sleeve, making it seem like their lover is… well… “Telepathic”. This brings up insecurity, and arguments ensue. The lyrics support this idea well, for example:
“But you can read my mind
I feel it all the time.
Felt it all around you…
You had me under spell right from the start
I don’t have a telepathic heart.”
STARSET – Telepathic Lyrics
The arguments get worse as we progress into the song “FAULTLINE”. This song has a lot to do with pointing fingers and blaming, as now both lovers in this story are outright arguing with each other a lot, and over stupid shit too. They aren’t handling being apart from each other well and are having a hard time with communication due to insecurity and distance. The vibe of this song fits this mood, as it’s got a sparse but tense groove, and the accompanying guitar/synth parts are rough and a bit grungy. Out of all the songs in this playlist, this one takes 3nd place for the lyrics fitting well into the story, with such snippets as:
“First you gotta know, how to play the victim
Hate to tell ya so, but you repeat the symptoms like an aftershock
And I only wanna make it stop…”
And also:
“Caught me shaking at the site, oh
Caught me quaking in my mind, oh
You’re tripping over every fault of mine
You’re breaking open every single time
It’s never black and white, no
Going seismic out of spite, oh
I never know if it’s your fault or mine
You’re breaking open every single time
Faultline.”
STARSET - FAULTLINE (Official Audio)
Like damn, that entire second snippet is the whole ass chorus. This song fits super well here.
The last song in Act II has some intense, even lustful feelings tied to it, this song being “PERFECT MACHINE”. The couple is desperate to make things work, as they still love each other very much but are really struggling. When they see each other, they engage constantly in what people called “hate-fucking” which ultimately solves nothing, and then fighting after they are done. Yes I know this was a WILD turn out of left field, but this is the story I envision with this playlist, very intense and potentially very real. The song I feel is the entire progression of one… erm… let’s call it a “session” of what was described above. It starts with the lustful feelings I mentioned before, then about one third of the way through the song, the entire feeling changes, becoming very angry and desperate. This song takes 2nd place for lyrics best fitting the story, with the lyrics changing from this:
“Show me your insides, show me your secrets
Show me what you desire… I can fake it”
To this:
“Even you know… even you know, this was all for nothing…”
STARSET - PERFECT MACHINE (Official Audio)
STARSET – PERFECT MACHINE Lyrics
Again, damn bro. I relate to this part of the story the least, as I’ve never experienced something like this, but holy shit that still cuts deep.
Finally, we reach Act III of this story, the end and the aftermath. This act opens up with “Let It Die”, which is the song that marks the inevitable end of this relationship. This song talks a lot about “breathing back life” into something and I feel that marks the end of a relationship very well. The feelings have been lost and it’s very possible that at least one party has moved on, so it needs to end. There’s not much to say about this song, except the one lyric that really made this song claim its spot on this playlist:
“But you told me, if you loved me, let it die”
Starset - Let It Die (Official Audio)
The relationship is now over, and one of the characters has left the narrative. We now enter the mind of the one who was still holding on to feelings. With this, the penultimate song to this playlist is the iconic “My Demons”. This song paints the image of inner demons attacking someone, and how they once had a significant other that would save them from these demons. The song references sickness, demons, needing help, and other color words that really paint the picture of someone mourning the death of love they once had. It is one of STARSET’s most emotionally impactful songs, and every single OG STARSET fan knows this song. This part of the story is the perfect spot for this song, and though I don’t want to copy another batch of lyrics for the purpose of finishing this story, I strongly encourage you to just listen to the song and pay attention to these lyrics. They’re very audible and very emotionally charged.
Starset - My Demons (Official Music Video)
We have finally reached the end, and the song that ends this whole story is “Ricochet”, another one of STARSET’s best songs. I know what I said about not copying another batch of lyrics to this post, but this song wins 1st place for lyrics relating to the story on this playlist, because this song is literally about reflection on a failed relationship and just wanting to see the other person:
“We were one in the same,
Running like moths to the flames,
You’d hang on every word I’d say
But now they only ricochet…
We were falling away,
You left me with a bittersweet taste,
But when I send my heart your way,
It bounces off the walls you made,
Ricochet”
COME. ON. You CANNOT tell me this isn’t the best way to conclude this really sad story. This isn’t the only set of lyrics in the song that paints this picture well, THE WHOLE SONG DOES. Back to the story, time has passed and the remaining character still misses their ex-lover. They’ve tried really hard to rebuild some sort of relationship with them, but it just didn’t work. This song is the final stage of their mourning, and while they know very deep down that it will get better, they need this time to grieve.
Starset - Ricochet (Official Music Video)
STARSET – Ricochet Lyrics
I don't relate to this entire story, but it was sure as hell fun to write. I apologize for any emotional pain that I have caused during the telling of this story, but this is what came to mind when I was creating the playlist. You’re a real one if you made it to the end, this being my longest post yet. I really hope you enjoyed.

*****
Billy Russo was good at his job. He had protected senators, CEOs, millionaires, and the general populace. He’s negotiated kidnappings, led retrieval jobs, been shot at and actually shot a few times. His face bore the remnants of his time in the Marines, scars from a mission that had gone belly up within the first ten minutes but he hadn’t called it quits.
He was a perfectionist. He was a professional. He was good at his job.
That’s why he had almost turned down the job that came across his desk. He’d never protected celebrities outside of events, and this would be something completely different. This felt more like glorified babysitting. The manager had told him that it would only be for a few weeks until a stalker was caught.
“I’m not sure Anvil is the best option for a stalker,” he had said slowly as he read over the information. “I can refer a few smaller companies that–”
“No offense, Mr Russo, but you’re the only company that we’re considering. If you’ll read all of the packet that you were sent, you’ll see that this maniac has broken into Miss Y/L/N’s apartment, has almost successfully kidnapped her, and sent her a box of snakes when she called the cops. This isn’t just a stalker; this man is a danger.”
Billy hadn’t flipped through the rest of the packet, actually. He had seen the name and the word stalker and had almost immediately lost interest.
“And Miss Y/L/N is aware that she will have a private security firm with her at all times. There’s very little privacy if I’m to secure her safety.”
The manager sighed, the noise loud over the line.
“So you’ll take the job?”
He was good at his job. He’d go as far as saying that he was the best.
“Anvil is at your service,” he said as he leaned back in his chair.
There was a first time for everything.
------
The weather was about as dreary as you felt. You listened to your manager talk about the new security team that he had hired for your protection while you were in the city.
“The head of the company will be here shortly to go over some ground rules and talk to you about your schedule,” he said as he flipped through the mail that had been x-rayed already. “We have a stack of fanmail to bring you. And if we’re not able to get to the recording studio, you’ll need to do some camera work here.”
“I thought we said no cameras? Anything that can give my location,” you reminded Grady as he flipped through your mail some more.
“Then just do an audio recording,” he said with a shrug. “We can’t lose the momentum that we have after your tour. We need to keep your name out there and since you refuse to publish that you’re being stalked–”
“I’m not making this guy famous for terrorizing me,” you shot back as you stood up and marched towards the kitchen. “And I’m not getting publicity from this. I’ve told you that already.”
Grady held his hands up in surrender. When the doorbell rang, he waved off your look of worry as he headed towards the door.
“Now remember what I told you about the head of the company,” he said with a gesture towards his face. He opened the door and gave what you had dubbed his television smile. “Mr Russo, glad to see you can be punctual. Come in.”
The man came in, giving a nod to Grady. He looked around the apartment, but didn’t even look at you twice.
“My guys are going to come in and get a feel for the layout if that’s alright. They won’t mess with anything, but they need to know all points of entry in the apartment.”
“Feel free,” you said with a wave of your hand, earning a second glance from him.
He nodded a bit, ushering his guys in. He gave them their orders which included having one stand outside of your apartment door. While the others made their way around your apartment, Mr Russo walked over to where you were standing.
“Miss Y/L/N, I’m Billy Russo, head of Anvil.”
“Just call me Y/N, please,” you said as you accepted his hand. “So you’re in charge of keeping me safe?”
He raised an eyebrow before he gave a stiff nod.
“Our first point of action is to make sure that the apartment is secure. Once we’re done with that, we’ll need to talk about your schedule. I see from what your manager sent that you have an interview that you were going to do, but I don’t know if that’s a good idea. It’s available to the public and it’s all over the internet which means your biggest fan knows about it.”
Mr Russo turned away from you at one point to address one of his guys. While he did, you gave yourself permission to study the man. You hadn’t immediately noticed how attractive the man was, but it was obvious now. Not even the scars on his face could distract you from it. His dark eyes were intent and alert, moving over every inch of the room he was in. You watched his lips as he spoke them, followed the line of his jaw and the length of his neck. His hair was slicked back, longer on top than on the sides.
You felt something buzzing under your skin, your fingers itching. You made your way over to the notebook on your coffee table, plucking up the pencil you kept beside it.
You wrote a few lines, tapping your pencil on the page to a beat in the back of your head.
“Ah, writing? Good, if you can’t do anything else that I’ve asked, at least you can work on a new song,” Grady said as he came back into the room. “Mr Russo, if you have issues with her doing the interview, we’re going to need to come up with an alternative plan. Miss Y/L/N can’t stay cooped up in this apartment until the man is caught. She’s an artist and needs to be out with her fans.”
“I would think she would need to be safe more,” Mr Russo said in a dry tone.
“Grady,” you cautioned with a shake of your head, “I think we should defer to the professional here. If we have to shift some things around for the next few weeks, that’s not much to ask in the grand scheme. I did just finish a fourteen month long tour.”
Grady sighed, pulling his phone out.
“I’ll get on it,” he said as he left the apartment, shutting the door behind him with a soft click.
“Wasn’t sure which of you were in charge,” Mr Russo said as he turned to look at where you were perched on the edge of the couch. “My guys have pointed out a few weaknesses in the security here, so we’re going to install some upgrades. It’ll be a bit noisy here for the rest of the day.”
You shrugged a shoulder and picked up a pair of noise cancelling headphones you had on the shelf of the coffee table.
“You guys can do what you need. If anyone needs me, just tap me on the shoulder.”
Mr Russo seemed surprised by that. You pulled the headphones on and plugged them into your phone. You hesitated just a moment too long in playing any music and you were just barely able to catch him say something.
“–not what I expected.”
You tugged the headphones down around your neck, giving him a strange look.
“What was that?”
He cleared his throat, obviously unaware that you had heard him the first time.
“I said that you’re not what I expected.”
You smiled as you leaned back on the couch a bit. He shifted his weight from foot to foot, but you noticed there was a certain center of gravity that kept him steady at all times.
“What’d you expect? A spoiled princess who was going to make your life hell?”
“Honestly? Yes,” he said with a laugh, not a trace of shame on his face. “I guess I expected some primadona that was going to do everything in her power to make me regret taking this job.”
You grinned as you grabbed your headphones once more.
“Sorry to disappoint you Mr Russo,” you teased as you tugged the headphones back onto your head, “but I’m just a normal girl that got lucky.”
This time you started to play your music, drowning out anything he might have said to that.
------
“Miss Y/L/N,” a familiar voice called from the living room, “there’s something that you need to see.”
You crossed the length of the office that you had set up a small recording studio in. Once in the living room, you saw that Mr Russo was holding what looked like a DVD case in his hand.
“What’s that?”
He gestured to the television. On it was a night vision video of someone sleeping in a bed. It took you a few moments to recognize yourself. And it took even longer to recognize that that was a hotel room from the tour.
“What the hell?”
Mr Russo fast forwarded the video a bit. There were more like that, images of you sleeping in various hotel rooms. Some of the videos showed you changing and Russo was went forward quicker for your sake. And then there was a video of you in bed, legs spread, your hand–
The screen went dark. Mr Russo put the remote down, reaching up to tap on the wire in his ear.
“Jameson, I want you to check the security footage. This was delivered to the building and I want to know who brought it. Franklin, I want you to get a list from Grady of any of the hotels that Miss Y/L/N had stayed in for her tour. I want to know how these videos were taken. On the double.”
You sat down heavily on the ottoman that was thankfully nearby. You weren’t sure you could have stood for much longer.
“It’s never going to end, is it?”
He dropped down to one knee next to you, reaching out to grab your hand.
“We’re going to figure it out and we’re going to catch him,” he promised with a confidence you were eager to believe. “You’re safe here. I’m going to keep you safe.”
You nodded, your eyes falling from his face to his hand on yours.
“I thought I was safe in those hotels. We always used fake names, I always had a decoy car so that no one would know where I was going. I thought I was safe. This… this guy saw things. That video showed me changing, showed me… I feel violated.”
“That’s how he wants you to feel. He wants you to feel like he can get to you anywhere. But that stops now, okay? He’s not going to get that close again.”
You let out a watery laugh, reaching up to wipe away the tears that had started to well up in your eyes.
“Thank you Mr Russo,” you said with a small sniffle.
He squeezed your hand before he stood up. He moved over to grab a box of tissues and moved back to where you were sitting.
“Call me Billy,” he said pointedly as he shook the box to get your attention.
You hesitated before you took a tissue.
“Billy. Okay. But only if you actually call me Y/N. Don’t think I haven’t noticed that you still call me Miss Y/L/N,” you teased as you wiped your nose.
“Alright. Y/N.” He smiled, the action making his scars pull a bit.
It wasn’t fair that something so simple, a smile, could make your heart speed up.
“I should probably call Grady. He needs to know,” you said as you gestured to the blank screen, wincing at the reminder of the last thing that had played. “And uh, if you could pretend you didn’t see anything?”
“Don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said as he grabbed the DVD case and handed it to you. “I just saw a few clips of you sleeping.”
He turned to head towards the door, that smile still on his lips.
“Thanks Billy,” you said, testing the name out for the first time.
He hesitated next to the door, turning his head just enough to see that the smile had somehow intensified.
“You’re welcome Y/N.”
------
“Ah, I’ve got–shit, ow! I’ve got it!”
You were on the floor. You weren’t sure how you got there, but you were on the floor. There was a creak nearby and you turned your head in time to catch a grin from Billy.
“You’re drunk,” he said as he stared down at you.
“I dropped my pencil,” you said as you held it up in victory, “but I found it!”
He shook his head and knelt down next to you.
“I don’t think this was covered in my protection detail,” he said as he looked you over. “Keeping you safe from your stalker, sure, but protecting you from your own bad decisions?”
“Hey!” You pointed the pencil at him, not even noticing when he tugged it from your fingers so that you didn’t accidentally stab him. “This wasn’t a bad decision. There’s a video of me getting myself off that’s being spread around the internet. I’m allowed to want to drown my liver.”
Billy sighed and grabbed you around your middle, tugging you up. Then he hefted you onto the couch.
“Your manager got the video taken down,” he started, but you let out a snort.
“Yeah, like that’s gonna stop it. I had to delete Twitter because of how many notifications I was getting.”
Billy sat down beside you. You couldn’t help but think that this was the first time he’d been this close to you.
“Did you watch it?” At his curious look, you gestured at the television across the room. “You turned it off that day, but it’s on the internet. Have you watched the whole thing?”
He shook his head, meeting your eyes.
“I wouldn’t do that to you. I don’t get on the internet much as it is, but I wouldn’t do that to you.”
It was nice. You felt that buzz under your skin, the same one that you got when you knew you needed to write something. This was telling you something else though. You leaned forward into his personal space, grinning when he didn’t even twitch. Your hand went to his knee, sliding up a little bit on his thigh.
“Would you like to see it in person?”
His face didn’t change.
“You’re drunk.”
You shrugged a shoulder, your hand sliding a little higher up his thigh. When he didn’t move, you leaned back a bit and let your hand drift down your stomach towards your shorts.
“C’mon don’t you wanna–”
His hand wrapped around your wrist, tugging your hand away from your body and pressing it against the couch. Your heart started to pound, curious and aroused, but he simply stood up and took a step away from the couch.
“It’s my job to protect you. If that means I have to protect your from yourself, I will. Drink some water, take some aspirin, and go to bed.”
You narrowed your eyes at him. Then you stood up, pushing past him and away from the couch. You needed to put some space between you and the rejection.
Of course he’d reject you. What would he want with a spoiled popstar? What would he care about a musician? He was a military man, a businessman. He probably dated CEOs or models or–
“It’s not that,” he said, drawing your attention to the fact that you had said all of that out loud.
“I don’t need a breakdown of it Mr Russo,” you said as you turned to face him, blinking when you realized he had followed you across the living room. “It’s fine. You’re here to do a job, right? Here to protect me. It’s fine, it’s great, you’re doing a great job.”
You said that last bit with a bit of a hiccup, the alcohol and your emotions building in your chest. You felt anger building too, itching it’s way to the top of your throat.
“You’re doing such a good job protecting me, right? I mean, the entire world got to see me with my fingers in my pussy, but sure, I’m safe.”
You spun back away from him, marching towards your bedroom. When you slammed the door, it made the pictures on the walls rattle. There was nothing but silence on the other side. You stayed there for the longest time, half hoping he would knock on the door, but in the distance you heard the front door open and shut.
Alone. That’s what you were good at. That’s what you were going to always be. Alone.
You let out a pathetic laugh, tears building in your eyes. There was a song in that, wasn’t there? Maybe you’d have to scrap the song you were working on about the man that made your heart beat fast and settle for a song about being alone in a crowded room.
------
“Fuck,” you groaned as you rubbed your forehead, tucking your face into your arm as you half curled up on the counter. “I’m never drinking again.”
“I find that people never mean that,” you heard a voice say from behind you.
You winced at the voice. Not just because it was a little louder than you would have liked, but because it was Billy. You weren’t drunk enough to have forgotten the embarrassment the night before. It played on repeat in your head all night in technicolor.
Usually when he was there at night, he was gone for the morning shift. He didn’t come by every day, but he did take shifts with the other Anvil employees that watched you. And while they usually stayed outside of the apartment, Billy was the only one that ever felt comfortable being in there with you.
You really wished he didn’t feel comfortable. You wished he had left in the morning like he usually did. You wished… you wished…
“I really don’t need a lecture today,” you mumbled into the crook of your arm.
“Good thing I’m not here to lecture you then.” You could hear him shift around a bit before he spoke again. “How much do you remember from last night?”
All of it. You remembered every painful moment of it. Flirting with him, touching him and then touching yourself. You remembered his hand on your wrist, the hope in your chest that was extinguished in an instant. The rejection.
You were just a job for him. He was just there to protect you.
“I–”
“Mr Russo,” a voice called from outside of the door with a knock, before it opened to reveal a member of Anvil, “there’s a gentleman downstairs that says he knows who released the video. He wants to speak with you.”
Billy gave a tight nod to his employee. When the door was shut and the two of you were alone again, he turned back to look at you. You had sat up at the revelation, and with Billy looking at you like that? You wanted to curl back up.
“You should go check on that,” you said as you gestured to the door with your chin. “It’s your job, right?”
He stood up a bit straighter, giving you a tense nod before he turned around on his heel. You watched him head to the door, fighting back the urge to call his name.
Maybe this was almost over. Maybe your stalker would be caught soon and you’d be safe to return to your life from before.
Maybe you wouldn’t have much more time with Billy.
You didn’t want to think about that.
------
“We’ll get you outside and into the car,” Billy said from beside you, his eyes scanning the crowd of screaming fans that had gathered outside of the building. “I’d like to know who told the world that you were coming here today.”
It was supposed to be a short trip to the recording studio to do something for the song you had been working on. Billy had said it wasn’t a good idea, but you were tired of being cooped up. When he had relented into letting you go, he had said it would be a good idea for it to just be the two of you. He had his men on standby at least.
“I can’t even see the car,” you said as you tugged your hood down a bit, turning so that they couldn’t get photos of you. “How are we going to get out there in this? It’s never been like this before.”
Billy gestured towards the glass doors where you could see men in Anvil uniforms coming up.
“They’ll get the crowd under control,” he said with a nod, “and then we’ll have to make a break for it. Stick close to me, don’t pause for pictures or autographs. You can be the media darling once we’re sure your stalker isn’t out there with them.”
You nodded, hugging your arms around your chest.
“I guess you were right about this being a bad idea Mr Russo,” you said quietly as you turned away from the door completely.
He didn’t react to the name. Ever since the night you’d gotten drunk, you’d made a habit of keeping that distance between the two of you. It was for your sake as much as it was his. You didn’t want to put him back in that position.
And it was easier to pretend you hadn’t started to fall for him if you reminded yourself that he was just there to protect you. It was just a job to him. He was a professional.
Once Anvil had the crowd controlled and separated enough to get through, Billy wrapped his arm around you and led you to the door.
“Just stay close to me,” he whispered into your ear before he pushed the door open.
The two of you moved together, tucked in close as the raging fans pushed closer and closer. At some point you heard a yell of ‘get back’ right before you felt the swell of the crowd start to close in behind you. They must have broken through the barriers, deciding to take the chance.
Fans were touching your sleeves, your legs. Billy kept his arm around you, but at one point you felt someone grab your wrist. They were begging for a photo and you were yanked sideways, your arm aching immediately. As you tried to tell them that you had to leave, you felt something sharp and hot through your side.
“Billy!”
He was there in an instant, pushing the phone down and dragging you the last few feet to the car. He pushed you into the back seat before he joined you. You were about to ask how he was going to drive from the backseat but you realized someone was in the front seat already.
“Drive. And someone is going to answer for letting the barricades fall,” Billy barked out as he turned to watch the crowd start to grow smaller as his employee raced out of the lot. “We were ambushed. I lost her at one point, do you realize what could have happened?”
“Billy?”
“I want an after action from every person out there. I want a minute to minute description of what happened. I need to know exactly–”
“BILLY!”
He stopped his tirade and turned to look at you. You saw him gauge the look on your face before he looked down to where you had your hand pressed to your side. Red was starting to seep through your fingers.
“Fuck. Hospital, now!”
He pulled your hand away to look at the cut, swearing again. He yanked his jacket off to ball up and press against the wound, holding the pressure there.
“When did this happen? Why didn’t you–”
“I didn’t realize until we were in the car,” you said through gritted teeth as you leaned back, the pain stretching with you. “Was it bad? I think the adrenaline kept me from feeling most of it.”
“Looked pretty deep,” he admitted as he looked through the windshield, checking to see where you were. “Not long now, we’re almost at the hospital. You’ll probably just need stitches.”
You nodded, closing your eyes for a second as you tried to brace through the pain. It burned. The only comparison you could think of was like a papercut, only so much more.
“It takes you being stabbed to call me Billy again?”
You opened your eyes in startled realization. You had called him Billy, hadn’t you? A glance to him showed that he looked worried, but there was something else there too. Something more.
“Caught up in the moment, I guess,” you said with a wince of pain.
“I prefer Billy to Mr Russo. From you at least,” he added with a strained smile as he applied a little more pressure against your side.
“I need it to be Mr Russo,” you admitted with a ragged inhale, deciding you might as well admit it now. “I need the reminder that you’re just protecting me. That I’m just a job to you.”
You didn’t miss the subtle shake of his head. He leaned in close to you, his eyes darting up to where his employee was breaking countless laws to get you to the hospital in a hurry.
“You’re not just a job to me. You haven’t been for some time.”
Oh. A new type of heat started to spread in your stomach. You turned to look at Billy, tried to figure out if he was saying what you thought he was, but the car jolted to a stop. The driver turned around and looked at the two of you with wide eyes.
“We’re here,” he said a moment before the door was opened.
You were ushered out by some nurses, having been called by someone on Billy’s payroll. When you looked behind you, you saw Billy standing helplessly next to the car before the doors closed behind you.
------
The stitches itched, but you kept your hand away from them. You had gotten back to your apartment at almost midnight, your body aching and sore from being up for over twenty four hours. The stress and excitement had finally gotten to you.
Billy had left to go talk to his men about what happened in the hopes that someone had seen the attacker. You’d only found that out through the guy that he had left in charge while he was gone.
His words in the car made you unsure where you stood. You weren’t just a job to him, sure, but that didn’t mean he wanted you. Maybe he considered the two of you to be friends. Would it be so bad to be friends with Billy?
God, yes, it would be horrible. To be close to him and not have him? It would be torture. You were sure you’d rather be stabbed again.
“Y/N?”
You paused as you started to lift the sweater over your head. You limped towards the living room where Billy was standing. His eyes met yours and you tried not to show how badly you were shaking.
“Did you catch him?”
He shook his head, dropping his jacket onto the floor. He crossed the distance in a few strides, his hands coming up to frame your face. You had only a few seconds to prepare yourself before his lips were on yours. It felt like he was trying to devour you, his mouth crushed against yours. His hands moved to your sides, one hand pressed ever so gently against the gauze on your side. His other hand tugged you closer, pressed your body along his.
“So that’s what you meant by me not being just a job,” you whispered against his lips, fighting back a smile.
“The reason I stopped you that night was because you were drunk and I wasn’t sure if you meant it. I thought you were just looking for something to distract yourself and I didn’t want that to be me. I didn’t want to get only part of you. Not when I want the whole damn thing.”
You clenched your fist in the front of his shirt, tugging him down into another kiss.
“Idiot,” you chided fondly, kissing his jaw as you did. “It’s yours. Whatever you want, it’s yours. As long as I get you in return.”
He gave you that grin that set your soul on fire.
“Deal.”
------
You were tracing your fingers over Billy’s face, the scars uneven. His eyebrows furrowed a bit and he opened one eye to look at you.
“I thought they’d disgust you,” he admitted quietly.
“Why would they disgust me?”
He shrugged a shoulder as he closed his eye once more.
“I see the stares I get. I know what people think.”
You smiled and leaned up, pressing a kiss to the scar on his jaw. Then the next. And the next. You kissed each scar until he rolled the two of you over, his mouth descending upon yours with a smile.
“When are you going to realize that I’m not like other people?”
He laughed as he kissed you again, his hands careful on your side even as he moved between your legs once more.
“Think I’m starting to get the memo,” he teased as he got you ready for a second round.
------
They did finally catch your stalker. He admitted that he had gotten access to you from your manager who hadn’t thought you’d actually be in danger with Anvil at your side. He just wanted to generate some buzz, keep your name in the news.
Once you fired Grady, you made another decision. It was a long time coming.
Billy walked into the apartment, frowning when he saw you packing a suitcase. He crossed his arms over his chest, a protective gesture if ever you saw one.
“You leaving?”
You smiled as you dropped the shirt you were folding. You made your way over to Billy and put your hands on his shoulders, lifting yourself up so that you could give him a kiss.
“I never wanted to be a popstar. I like writing music, but I’m not big on performing. That tour I just did? It just made me see how much I don’t want that to be my life. So I’m going to become a songwriter instead.”
Billy nodded slowly, his hands going to your hips. His left hand went immediately to your side, his thumb running across the scar from your attack.
“And that requires you to pack a bag?”
You laughed and looked over at where you had been packing.
“This apartment is in the record label’s name. Since I’m going to be my own person, I’ve decided to get my own place. It’s not far from your place, actually,” you added with a grin.
He leaned in and brushed his lips against yours.
“I’ve got a few ideas how we can christen your new place,” he teased as his lips went over your neck.
You couldn’t wait.

push to talk by @alexjosten [requested by @nikothespoonklepto]
see which other fics i’m reviewing this month! / my review request post!
this is a delightfully engaging fic based on the game firewatch that follows neil as he spends a summer as a fire lookout, isolated except for radio communication with andrew, a fire lookout in the adjacent sector of the park. this is such an intense, fun, beautiful, and humorous fic.
i remember enjoying this so much as it came out, eagerly awaiting each new chapter. you drew me in so easily and deeply that i watched a whole playthrough of this game. i can fully appreciate how well you were able to translate the plot, gameplay, interactions between characters, and the stunning visuals so so seamlessly and have it aftg so well.
some parts that stood out to me:
”dusk settles on the trees like clay powder, dusting the evergreens with a red tint” woah this is such a gorgeous way of starting off this fic.
”the moon extends her helping hand to guide him out into a clearing. here, neil can see. but also, he can be seen” i love these descriptions, and our introduction to neil.
”he ignores his sleeping bag and the strict instructions to camp at nightfall and continue during the day” ah yes, Neil I Do What I Want Josten strikes again, with little regard for what people tell him to do
”if he’s not careful, the black dirt beneath his feet could bleed crimson. the exact combination of colours he came out here to avoid” this is stunning. i am immediately drawn into this fic, wanting to know what or who exactly neil is running from, and where he’s going
”buttermilk rays whisk the shadows of leaves into a dance on the forest floor beneath his feet” !! buttermilk?? somehow that works so so well
”the irony of calling it that in his head isn’t lost on him, and he vows to avoid that comparison again” what a subtle detail, but so telling! i am pretty bad with reading tags a lot of the time, so this was a great introduction to raven!neil
”it’s as exposing as it is freeing. he can’t feel trapped when he can see for miles every way he turns” wow it’s still so early in the fic, but you’ve already done an exceptional job at justifying neil choosing to come here, to escape.
foxtrot tower is such a cute name! i love that it’s not something directly taken from the books, this name seems to fit this au so well. i know that you likely had the game as reference for the tower, but i really liked the way you describe it, you were able to establish the same tone that exists in the game, but you did it through words instead of visuals and audio, something that really impresses me
”glad to hear you’re literate enough to have read the dossier” ohmygoodness ANDREW
”andrew’s tone is playful. neil thinks it might even be flirtatious, but he doesn’t care enough right now to find out” as much as i enjoy oblivious!neil, i appreciate that this version of neil is more aware, he seems more in tune with things around him. it fits better with this story, with the isolation and only communication being through the radio
”the sky slips into a more comfortable pink, the sun laying down to rest amongst the mountains” am i ever going to get over your descriptions of the environment? i don’t think so
of course neil goes for a run, basically right after doing a super intense two day hike in one day
”andrew sounds agitated” I LOVE THIS
oh dang, neil’s panic is so sudden, i’m so immersed that i immediately felt nervous too
”it’s our job to watch the horizon, neil. it’s not my fault you’re on mine” oh this is so good
”neil doesn’t believe in coincidences. he believes in traps and ill intentions, because that’s all his life has been until now”  it’s honestly amazing how quickly the atmosphere of this fic has turned to something a little bit darker, kind of scary. we know neil as a runner, but the idea of someone finding him so soon and trying to lure him out? gives me chills
“he doesn’t realise his hands are shaking until he struggles to press the push-to-talk button” PUSH TO TALK I AM SO FOND OF FICS THAT INCLUDE THE TITLE OF THE FIC IN THEIR FIC. also shaky hands are my kryptonite
”he also takes the cleaver from the kitchen counter” NEIL I- I AM SPEECHLESS
”a small sensible part of his brain tries to convince him that there are much easier ways to kill him than leading him out in the middle of nowhere, in a forest that he told nobody from his past life that he would be living in, where he uses a new name that nobody knows” !! good to hear that neil has a sensible part of his brain LOL
”but underestimating his enemies and their taste for dramatics would be a mistake” neil of all people does have a good reason for being paranoid. i love that you have this separated as a different paragraph, i read it differently because of it and i think that it adds more gravity to the sentence
”there, he finds a lipstick-red tent, zipper teeth yawning open to reveal two pink sleeping bag tongues” the imagery!!! incredible
”he feels like a walking timebomb” yeah i am definitely nervous for neil
”’girls don’t do it for you?’ andrew’s curiosity has a hopeful slant” OHMYGOODNESS ANDREW
”andrew’s voice is a firm, solid reassurance” bless andrew
”neil never thought he’d be relieved to meet someone who didn’t like exy” i also never thought that. neil you are a changed man
ooh the backstory to the fireworks is so good! i was also thinking it was a little out of character, but this is the perfect reason that renee would let it slide!
”the stars are withering in the purpling sky” i could cry because i love your writing so much
A MAN I AM FREAKING OUT. WHO IS HE
the easygoing banter between andrew and neil is so great, their conversation is interesting and flows really well
”he’s almost home” it amazes me and really shows something about this version of neil that he’s so quick to call this tower his home
”i know i needed to do this, but i am not sure i am ready to be so alone” woah break my heart why don’t you? this hits really close to home,, how dare you make me feel emotions
”i usually take a more straightforward approach” andrew never lies, but this is the truest thing he has ever said
”they’ll probably never meet, because neil intends on spending the rest of his summer without meeting another soul, andrew included” hmmm why do i have the sneaking suspicion that this will not be the case?
”neil’s not sure what grindr is but his face heats up all the same” this sentence is a MOOD (except i do know what grindr is)
”andrew’s response is sharp like a blade. ‘why? because one of the girls called you scarface?’ neil feels himself flinch” hhh i am secretly a very big fan of scenes that include neil’s scars, so you got me here
”andrew keeps neil company on the hour hike up to the north of his sector, but his usual commentary seems a bit strained today” uhH what’s going on, i’m getting scared
DID ANDREW BRING NEIL OVER JUST SO HE CAN SEE WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE?
ohmygoodness, neil leaving andrew pictures and a sweatshirt? so so so cute
”he imagines the fear they felt when they saw him holding it wasn’t too unlike the fear that used to paralyse him when his father, or lola, would threaten him back home” woah this is good
i would bet that allison was the one to write that letter haha i can imagine that renee is likely kind of shaken by the incident, otherwise she might not have let allison leave it behind
andrew is such a good companion for neil, calming him both by his presence and by logically explaining what could have happened to the tent. he’s an anchor
”he feels like the cleaver he had attempted to defend himself with on his first day now carries a foreboding aura” YEAH I’M GETTING PRETTY NERVOUS TOO
WAIT NATHAN IS DEAD? THANK GOODNESS
woah so interesting to learn about neil’s backstory and his reason for not going pro “his offers to join pro teams curled up like dead leaves in a fire” dang, referencing both his burns and his new job? so good
ANDREW MINYARD IMITATING A VALLEY GIRL I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE PLEASE
oo that subtle way of mentioning andrew’s memory
i am so emotional, andrew is just so so good. makes me feel all the feelings ;-;
”andrew sounds like a bristled up cat tail” CUTE!!
i am dying to know what is going on in andrew’s head, during this conversation, when he left his tower to see neil, and really, just throughout this whole fic
woah i really like the way that you had neil describe his asexuality. it’s something that i recognize in myself and i like the way that you handled it.
 >:C
them drawing each other?? peak cute. i want that to happen to me (have someone who doesn’t know what i look like try and draw me)
”neil waits for him to say more. he doesn’t. oh. that’s why. ‘heh’” LOLOL
you know what, i actually,,, only recognized the name draco malfoy LOL
ANDREW PRETENDING THAT HE DOESN’T ACTUALLY KNOW AARON OH MY GOODNESS. I CANNOT BELIEVE HE PRETENDED TO GET HIS NAME WRONG. “i look like him. but hotter and better dressed” ANDREW HOW GOOD TO YOU DRESS YOU LIVE IN THE MIDDLE OF A FOREST. this whole section is hilarious and really helps lighten the tone and keep things playful
”’why would i wear that?’ andrew’s response is too quick and defensive” *unintelligible screaming*
ANDREW DRAWING NEIL IN TINY RUNNING SHORTS. THIS! MAN! I CAN’T HANDLE HIM
”neil gets into the routine of falling asleep next to his radio, talking to andrew deep into the night, far past his ability to keep his eyes open. they take turns drifting off mid conversation…” this is the softest thing ever
”considering neil’s job is to prevent forest fires, there’s a certain irony in how beautiful the park is when painted the colours of flames” oh (like a good oh)
ANDREW REJECTING NEIL REALLY JUST BROKE MY HEART WHY DID YOU DO THAT TO ME
”his heart tumbles from his chest and falls to the bottom of the ravine. he doesn’t understand why it was so close to the railings of his ribcage in the first place” this is so so beautiful even though it’s describing something so sad. makes me feel achy
drunk andrew. how is it that you, alexjosten, seem to know everything that i love in a fic?
”neil’s cabin floods with light. how real is neil josten without nathaniel wesninski filling his shell? with a snap, it’s gone.” uh this is so incredible, i love how you split everything up into its own paragraph, their conversation so similar to the storm. ugh i can’t get enough
”still, neil feels the change: the undeniable part of him where his branches have been torn asunder and his bark has been scorched away to expose his core” every time i think that this sentence is the best, and every time you blow me away again. i can’t describe how this sentence makes me feel
the scene of neil rescuing allison and renee fills me with adrenaline, it’s so intense
having the girls recognize neil was like being trapped in a nightmare, there was nothing i could do but read on and see how it ends. dajsflks. but also i really hope that neil got back his jacket and sweater lol
WHAT IN THE WORLD NEIL HAVING TO PLAY A GAME ON CODEINE, RIKO TRYING TO KILL NEIL ON TV, THIS IS SO INTENSE. also, i love what you’ve done with this
dang, how does andrew know kevin?
andrew’s gifts for neil are so cute. i am here just freaking out!!!!
A PUFFBALL DANDELION
“you sweet, sheltered city child” oh my goodness adorable
”you’re going to go nuts when i tell you what a caterpillar turns into” ANDREW
THE BEAR. THE JUMP
honestly, i’m a little surprised that neil wasn’t supplied with bear spray
”’andrew, i don’t think they’re coming for me.’ ‘of course they’re not.’ neil’s heart sinks. ‘they’re not?’ ‘i am’” KFAJSDFJPOJAFD THIS GLORIOUS INTERACTION WILL FOREVER BE WITH ME
THEM TRAVELLING AND EVERYTHING WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE BECAUSE OF THE DARK. ALSO ANDREW BEING SUPER BUFF AND PICKING NEIL UP NO BIG DEAL
”we had your face on a dart board in the break room” AHHHH
”the only consolation is it smells of the andrew who just walked two hours to rescue him from the side of a cliff, and then spent another two hours carrying him here” i don’t even know what to say
wait andrew knew who neil was the whole time oh my goodness
THE GAME IS ANIMAL CROSSING. this is now and forevermore considered canon!
ANDREW DROPPING THE GAME HE’S SO TIRED. ANDREW MY BABY
ANDREW’S DRAWING OF NEIL
”half of andrew’s sandwich is in his mouth, and he kind of looks like a hamster” adorable!
okay okay jean and jeremy being the two trading letters? so so good.
THE ENDING WITH ANDREW TELLING STORIES ABOUT NEIL BEING DEAD
the last chapter was amazing, i loved the way that you wrote the interactions between andrew and neil, they fit so well together. i also appreciate that you deviated from the game and had them meet! it is infinitely more satisfying. this was such an easy fic to read, everything felt right. i love your characterization of both of them. to have andrew treat neil the way that he did, knowing who neil was? amazing
also, can i just say that the moodboards that you include at the beginning of each chapter are amazing? they really helped with establishing the tone of the fic.
this fic is so intense, i was constantly amazed by how i was so fully immersed in it. everything that neil felt, i felt. your descriptions were gorgeous and i could not get enough of them. there were so many small details, sentences that were pure gems, that rereading this was just as, if not more, enjoyable than the first time. i really cannot put to words how much i loved reading this. thank you so so much for writing it!

DEATH BATTLE Review: Johnny Cage vs. Captain Falcon
Two punching stars do battle for the title of most famous man of punches.
The Community DEATH BATTLE from DBC 120/121 comes back to see the real deal.
Johnny Cage′s Preview.
Mortal Kombat. A deadly tournament where only the best of the best can hope to survive. From four-armed gladiators seeking konquest, to ninjas seeking vengance, there’s nothing that can surprise you.
Even if one of the fighters is an actor.
Tumblr media
Johnny Cage was an actor and a stuntman. Known for his many over the top action films, like Ninja Mime, Citizen Cage, Time Smashers, and one of Boomstick’s personal favorites, Tommy Scissorfists.
But, as with many actors, Johnny’s fame was fleeting. His time in the spotlight was becoming a detriment because he was accused of being a fraud.
Tumblr media
So, what better way to prove them wrong than to enter a tournament to the death?
Luckily, Johnny wouldn’t have to do it with a stunt double or anything. He’s mastered all sorts of martial arts, from karate to Bruce Lee’s self-made style of Jeet Kune Do.
Tumblr media
These skills would be a good thing, because Rayden was in big trouble. Shao Khan was one win away from taking over the Earth… Because I guess he doesn’t know how much it sucks.
Anyways, Johnny didn’t have to rely on his martial arts alone to win fights. As it turns out, he’s actually descended from an ancient Mediterranean war cult that bred warriors to fight among the gods.
Tumblr media
With these powers, Johnny has access to a variety of powers that lets him do all sorts of crazy stuff. He can shoot out balls of green energy to hit opponents from afar, the Shadow Kick can knock them that distance, or he can do a Guile impression with the Eclipse Kick (Speaking of Street Fighter, Wen Vega?).
Tumblr media
But since Johnny is still a mortal human being, he needs a move that can get him out of trouble. And he came up with one alright. It’s the Nutcracker, the Berry Buster, the Infertilizer, the Beanbag Barrage, the "Not that kind of blow" Blow, and Boomstick’s personal favorite, the "Help, Doctor! I think they're in my ribcage!" Special! It’s even a fatality!
Of course, Boomstick give it a shot…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Looks like Wiz learned his lesson from the preview)
Anyways, Johnny‘s got a list of feats to pull from as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From being able to chop through diamond, to dodging point-blank automatic gunfire, Johnny isn’t a slouch in the strength or speed department. He’s taken on deadly foes multiple times, and has even defeated the fallen Elder God Shinnok thanks to his powers.
Tumblr media
Now, Shinnok can reasonably scale to Rayden. Rayden on his own was able to destroy a large temple.
Tumblr media
Now, Buddhist temples tended to shy away from stone, so by using wood and concrete as a base, the estimated destruction comes out to about…
Tumblr media
A little over 250 tons of TNT!
But Johnny is far from invincible. He’s been beaten before, and his power does have it’s limits.
Tumblr media
But despite his arrogance, Johnny has proven that he’s a capable fighter and a powerful protector. And after having a family, Johnny has shown that he has matured to truly earn the title of Earthrealm’s protector
Tumblr media
Incidentally, Shokan do have yamsacks.
Captain Falcon′s Preview.
In the year 2560,the Earth has gone crazy. Aliens are everywhere, space travel is a norm, and the newest sport is all the rage. F-Zero! A deadly sport where racers use anti-gravity technology to race along the tracks of insane courses. One wrong turn can lead to death.
Tumblr media
However, the champion of this sport is a mysterious man known as Captain Falcon.
Tumblr media
Little is known about Blue Falcon pilot. However, what is known is that he is a respected bounty hunter, one who protects the universe from the forces of evil like the vile Black Shadow.
But in order to take on Black Shadow, Falcon needs a powerful arsenal to get the job done.
Tumblr media
From his mighty Raptor Boost, to the Falcon Dive, this is no ordinary racer. Falcon can imbue his pyrokinetic power into a variety of powerful moves.
But the most famous, and powerful is his, say it with me, FALCON PUNCH!
Tumblr media
How he does this, is really up to anyone’s guess. However, it’s reasonable to say that the secret lies within the Captain’s Blue Falcon machine.
Tumblr media
As it turns out, it’s powered by a thing called a Reactor Might, a fragment of power that was created by the Big Bang. As for why it’s in a racing machine, that’s anyone’s guess.
The Reactor Might can also let Falcon do some other crazy techniques with his power as well. Like the Boost Fire. And thanks to some weird mystic power that the Reactor Might uses, the Captain can call upon it at any time. No matter where he is, Falcon is never without his ride.
Reactor Mights are powerful. One of them destroyed a space station, an explosion that yielded over 6 megatons of TNT!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, Falcon has to go out with a bang. In his final fight with Black Shadow. While it may look like he exploded part of a galaxy, Falcon had destroyed a prior device known as a Dark Matter Reactor. Which has the power to rewind the Big Bang using the six Reactor Mights- It’s a long story.
Tumblr media
However, defeating Black Shadow is impressive. Since Shadow has tanked attacks from other powerful beings without even flinching.
Tumblr media
He’s defeated multiple robots at once, torn apart a metal cage, seen a sniper miles away, and tanked bazookas.
And while Falcon accomplished his mission, it took more than one man to do so. And we’re not talking about that typical “Power of friendship” thing either. As it turns out, the name of “Captain Falcon” is a legacy title, similar to The Flash, or the Dread Pirate Roberts.
Tumblr media
Each new Falcon is hand-picked by the previous one, so long as they can prove that they surpass them. Since Ryu Suzaku is the current one, anything the other Falcons can do, he can also pull off.
Falcon may fall, but the legacy will live on. And he will save people one raceway at a time.
One more time people.
Tumblr media
FALCON PUNCH!
The Battle Itself.
Kervin, Luis, Kiid, Zack are using Jerky’s spritework for this animation. Johnny Cage will be voiced by Kieran Flitton and Captain Falcon will be voiced by Kestin Howard. Brandon Yates composes Falcon Uncaged (Soundtrack unavailable as of this review). Chris Kokkinos lead on audio.
The battle starts with Johnny getting footage of the F-Zero track, where they’re getting clips of a movie about Captain Falcon whom which, Johnny will be playing.
Tumblr media
Which comes off as a bad thing when you remember that only those that surpass Falcon can be Falcon. So, as far as fight stories go, this one is actually pretty good.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So after a flurry of punches and blows, Johnny takes up the challenge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Falcon charges Johnny, but Johnny uses his reflexes to not only dodge, but to also hit Falcon back.
Tumblr media
Of course, Falcon recovers and counter attacks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And he combos (kombos?) Johnny into a Falcon Dive
Tumblr media
Johnny, not one to give up so easily, gets back up.
Falcon goes in for a FALCON PUNCH but Johnny…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, while Captain Falcon recovers from a “Doctor, help! I think they’re in my ribs” special, Johnny takes some time to quip.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Falcon quips back. But the two end up on a F-Zero machine and continue the fight there.
Tumblr media
Falcon then opts to use his famous Falcon Knee Of Justice to knock Johnny into the boost pads.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Johnny uses the pads to get back at Falcon. So Falcon then grabs his ride and starts attacking Johnny.
Tumblr media
Finishing Blow in
5…
4…
3…
2…
1…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ninja Mime needs a new star now.
Tumblr media
Verdict + Explanation.
So, Johnny had the better martial arts, and he could even match mach speeds. But Falcon has dealt with tricky opponents before, and his other stats beat out Johnny’s.
Remember that final punch Falcon dealt?- Well, Falcon was able to create energy from the impact. Accounting for the conditions of space, this would mean that Falcon’s best energy output would be over 150 billionn joules of energy.
Tumblr media
For reference, that’s like dropping twelve elephants onto Black Shadow, but is also thousands of times greater than Johnny’s best feat.
Tumblr media
Now, Johnny might have defeated Shinnok, but that’s not exactly on the same level as Falcon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now you might be thinking “Wait, shouldn’t Johnny’s green glow help him out?”- Well, yes and no. Johnny’s powers are, well, powerful, but they’re kinda limited. While it’s a great power to have in the realm of Mortal Kombat, where deities are basically everywhere, it’s kinda restricted to Elder Gods. Even allowing for it to extend to other gods wouldn’t really help, since 1: Falcon isn’t a god, and 2: Johnny has been killed by non-deities before
Tumblr media
So, Johnny can tank blows from god-beings, but that’s mainly because his powers let him do so. A bullet to the head or heart will still kill him unless it’s a god bullet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The winner is Captain Falcon.
Overall impression.
Overall, this battle is really fun to both watch and look into. It takes two characters that are well known for the hype they generate and brings them in to see how well they stack up.
To be honest, I wasn’t expecting Johnny to match Falcon’s speed stats at all. It was pretty surprising. Plus, seeing Falcon in action after mainly being associated with Smash Bros is a real treat, I hope that the F-Zero fans got some enjoyment out  of the episode… Bummer that the DEATH BATTLE Curse couldn’t kick in for Falcon, but them’s the breaks.
Great fight, interesting research, and awesome music.
8.7/10. Will watch again.
Next Time…
Oh, an excuse to rewatch Avatar that doesn’t involve my constantly pushing the idea of Zuko vs. Dinobot (The Beast Wars guy (It’s two warriors known for their redemption arcs. Let me have this))
Tumblr media
And a reason to at least take a look int FMA.
Is there a fight that you want me to review? - Send an ask/request, and I’ll look into it!
Do you want to read my fanfic based around DEATH BATTLE itself? click here!
Thank you for reading, and I hope to see you next time for…

Demencia Theory- Not What She Seems
hello my villainous fans and random scrollers by I am from the villainous amino and I am about to show you a theory made by my friend M. with the help of me and a few others to show you a side of dementia you do not seem to see, so before I show it heres a link to M’s original theory on amino:https://aminoapps.com/c/villainous-4971691/page/blog/demencia-theory-not-what-she-seems/8BWv_8mvCmujakwpQx6kxLZvbMaxp5L6LbghR now lets begin
Oh, Demencia, you childish, hyperactive ball of enthusiasm!
With your evil chaotic-ness and your enchanted feelings for your boss, how could you ever be more than the silly thing that meets the eye?
.
.
.
We could think of a few ways.
The following theory is brought to you by the amazing minds from the  Villainous Theory Chat! Those that were involved with this theory include: Notdepresso, Siramay (hey that's me :D), Snivy, and Lynxi!
(And me but eh)
I'm almost tempted to say "forget about all of the other theories about Demencia you may have heard of before" because, this. is. insane.
We Villainous theorists believe that Demencia is....
Tumblr media
A Podemos Bailar agent.
Y'all:
Tumblr media
Now before you start shaking your heads, hear us out.
Yes, she acts like she has an evil agenda.
Yes, she's the practical personification of chaos.
Yes, she's absolutely head over heels for Black Hat
And yes, she's just so darn silly and maybe even annoying to some.
And doesn't she play it off so well?
Demencia is always at the max with all of these qualities and they never waver.
Her imperfections are too... Perfect.
But oh, is it an amazing disguise.
Who could possibly realize they're being fooled when they are too busy laughing at the fool?
As we all know, Demencia annoys and bothers both Black Hat and Flug with her obsessive and destructive qualities, to the point where they try to avoid her at all costs. Notice how it's always Demencia who approaches them and that it's never the other way around unless the two are absolutely forced to?
The woman has a ridiculous amount of free time to herself; finding the time to teach a bear and a handful of robots a song, destroy thousands of dollars worth of products, draw her Demencia Tips, attempt to romance Black Hat, make puppets, learn guitar, etc.
With all that free time and privacy... Who really knows what Demencia can and will do?
This disguise, this face she has made for herself is perfect. She is free to stalk her subjects right in front of them and not be questioned for it except for the occasional, exasperated "what does sHE THINK SHE'S DOING!?"
And this is just the minimal tip of the iceberg.
There's so much more.
Demencia's bizzare behavior truly doesn't raise any real questions because everyone within the manor is so used to it that something as odd as messing with a computer to creating your own "advertising" short without anyone's knowledge to it is seen as Demencia being Demencia.
This lizard lady could do almost anything without ever being truly interrogated for it.
She has trained her prey to not be scared of her as she walks right up to it.
Another thing to note about Demencia's behavior is her job at Black Hat Organization. As stated by Flug in the Anniversary short, Demencia handles all hero extermination. This, however, is only to his knowledge. We have no evidence other than Flug's word and a possibly staged picture to prove this. We've yet to find anything stating that a hero has died at any particular time.
In fact, we dont even know if this is really Heavy Punch's cape from the Evil Conquest episode.
cape?
Tumblr media
Bish W H E R E ?
Tumblr media
(And don't try to tell us it's because it's a kids show, Gravity Falls, a DISNEY production, managed to sweep in 2 paragraphs full of hidden jokes within the same screen pan without drawing too much attention from the younger audience) (besides that there are to many dark and demonic jokes in villainous for that to be a reason also just look at the episodes on mojo jojo and rob) ((this bold is me))
But this all pales in comparison to what's truly incriminating about Demencia, and the answer is found buried within this fandom's favorite bookmarked tab: Podemos Bailar.
Now, I made a post the other day about what we discovered is going on in that right side scrolling of commands on the website: http://aminoapps.com/p/56jwha
What we discovered is that two people are interacting over that animation loop. One person is telling another how to decode a specific piece of an audio file in order to get a message while the other is actually inputting the commands to do just that.
We can firmly assume that these two are our last two dancing agents.
Now how does this tie in with Demencia? Well, it has already been established that Demencia knows how to create her own codes and sneak them into BHO's production videos as we see happen in the very first short, The Perception of Evil, in which a code flashes on screen saying "Demencia Was Here".
Funny enough, a short was released a few months back called "Demencia Wuz Here". And my what a controversial short this one is if you see it like we do.
Let's break it down:
So Demencia left a hidden code for someone to decipher that referenced an advertisement short that didn't even exist yet. This means that the short was a premeditated thing and not just something done at the spur of the moment for some pickles.
What's also good to note is that there was no reference to King Wazuq's Glove before ((well like that one end frame but nothing else in like actual videos that what I think he meant)) this episode and the outer Demencia doesn't appear to be the type to search for information that deeply for something she wouldn't even know she'd need months before hand.
Unless... The heist was staged.
What we also see in this short is Demencia being able to hack into The Defence Departments, high security, Area 52 cameras in order to capture her stealing the glove. A very difficult task I'd imagine for an empty-headed lizard girl. But... She really hasn't proven herself to be all that has she?
Another thing to note is that Demencia created this entire short on her own. 505, Flug, nor Black Hat knew of this until they walked in on her but, once again, do nothing to stop her. It's just Demencia being Demencia.
Also, have any of you noticed that Demencia is the only character in Villainous so far that labels herself as an agent?
Oh, but this only goes deeper.
Not only is Demencia a Podemos Bailar agent, and not only is she working as an undercover agent amongst villains, she is also the agent telling the other what commands to input on the Podemos Bailar website.
She is telling her true co-worker exactly what to do to find a code she has hidden especially for him in her "advertisement" short.
But how can we be so sure that it's her?
How can we be so sure that it's that video specifically?
Because, if you click and drag the I See All picture into the Google search bar, you will find a link to the website's assets page. With that page are a series of links to different parts of the site. One of those links holds the exact audio file from the "Demencia Wuz Here" short...and it is the only short there.
The short Demencia made without anyone's knowing.
The short that she aquired impossible information for.
And the short she specifically designed and planned from episode one to reach out to her last comrade for and betray her villainous coworkers.
I mean, just look at her body type and compare it to the yet-to-be-found female Podemos Bailar agent! They're a practical match, thick ((EXTRA THICC note I hate using that word)) legs and all! And there is no way that giant next to her is Flug!
Also, another thing to consider is, if neither of these last two agents are on the villainous scene, then how have they been aquiring photos from within the manor? Flug's notes about 505's creation and the picture of the organization's plans to go to Japan are prime examples!
(another thing about that japan plan pic is that in the same episode it was released with we can see dementia reading that EXSACT same magazine that's in the picture! the clues are hiding in plane sight and no one is any the wiser!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The evidence is stacking here people, and we the Villainous Theory Chat truly believe that it's only going to become more suspicious as time goes on.
This also means that there is a secret audio code that we need to find in the "Demencia Wuz Here" video. All we need to do is follow the steps she's given us on the site in order to find it.
There is a spy among us and she is clothed in green. (A sheep in lizards clothing)
I hope you enjoyed reading our idea!
Happy Villainy!
and that's his theory he has others to I might post here but if you like this then go to the villinos amino and join are theory chat! and if you are against this theroy tell me why and we at the theory chat will try to debunk you debunking this unless your right BUT YOU GOT TO OPEN YOUR EYES DEMENTIA IS NOT WHAT SHE SEEMS, SPREAD THE WORD or not black hat might be listening and we don't want to blow her cover! but I would like to see more talk about this
so I'm siramay and remember keep claim and drag-on

Outer Wilds and the Beauty of Emergent Gameplay Design
February 4, 2020 10:00 AM EST
Sometimes, discovering what your objective is can be your objective in and of itself, which makes the gameplay of Outer Wilds so compelling.
Editor’s Note: mild spoilers for Outer Wilds concepts are present in this editorial. Specific details and plot elements are kept as vague as possible, but but this is a game best experienced blind. Exercise caution before reading, but do play the game first and come back to this editorial after. It’s worth your time.
Had I played Outer Wilds in 2019, it would inevitably have been in my recent Top 10 list. A safe estimate would probably be that it would be #4, since it didn’t impact me quite as much as Disco Elysium, but I digress. What I’m saying is that Outer Wilds is an excellent video game, and I’m glad that I got the chance to tackle it recently.
youtube
Now, I would absolutely like to spend the rest of this article gushing about specific parts of Outer Wilds that I liked, including hugely interesting moments or revelations…but I won’t. Much of the charm and fascination that I had with Outer Wilds came from solving its mysteries entirely on my own. It might not be like that for others, but figuring things out entirely from a smattering of clues or acting on unspoken cues was a huge highlight for me.
You begin Outer Wilds by waking up on your home planet of Timber Hearth, staring up at the stars. You’re about to launch on your first space flight, and the opening section serves as a tutorial for many elements of the game you’ll come to experience. One big story beat happens, and then you will launch into space. At this point, freedom is yours! Anywhere you’d like to go in the solar system is completely open to you, once you’ve come to grips with the flight systems. You’ll never get any more tools or permanent upgrades beyond what you start with: the Scout Launcher, Signalscope, jetpack, and your spaceship.
The NPCs will offer a couple of basic suggestions: take a practice trip to the nearby moon? Or perhaps you’d like to meet up with the other explorers from Timber Hearth for tips and advice? The choice of actions you take is yours…up until the Sun promptly goes supernova after 22 minutes, ending all life in the solar system. Yes, that includes yours. After that, you begin once again on Timber Hearth, waking up and staring at the stars. Your ship computer carries over any points of interest or notes that you discovered, but that’s it. Time to do it again…and again…until you start figuring out what is happening and if this abrupt ending to the universe could possibly be prevented.
A Riddle, Wrapped in a Mystery, Inside an Enigma
What follows for the duration of Outer Wilds is a rhythm of learning the workings of the solar system. Each planet offers a set of unique challenges, and solving them will reveal more parts of a bigger mystery. A precursor race left behind traces of many interlinked science projects, and their notes will frequently reference other places or experiments taking place on wholly different planets.
It struck me fairly early on that the only thing I was doing to progress was simply furthering my understanding of the game’s mechanics and setting. This is hardly a unique case, but Outer Wilds is extremely hands-off in letting the player solve this system-sized puzzle. You can’t make the puzzles easier by upgrading your jetpack or oxygen tanks. Ship upgrades to withstand hazards don’t exist. There’s no weapons, and any hazards you find just have to be navigated around.
From beginning to end, I was driving the entire experience forward. A mystery laid before me, expertly crafted and divided into several different information clusters that organically flowed between each other. It became a massive web of science fiction intrigue, and I just had to keep going and see it through to the end. There was always that timer in the back of my mind, yet death by supernova or other hazard was but an inconvenience…and other times, a hasty reset was exactly what I needed to catch a window of opportunity.
A single loop was rarely the same. Sometimes I’d try to act on a hint I’d picked up along the way, only to be missing something crucial to aid my understanding. I’d hurtle into the side of cliffs by accident, park my ship in a place that saw it ejected into space without me, or overestimated distances and run out of oxygen in a cave somewhere. Perhaps I’d uncover a clue about a timed event that would happen ten minutes earlier in a loop, so I’d close out the remaining time by attempting to jetpack to the next planet over. Sometimes, the music would start to signal the end of the loop, and I’d just wait it out by watching the end.
And in some loops…I’d just explore, or try different things without aim. How close could I skirt to the sun to gravity slingshot away? How far out of the system could I make it? Outer Wilds would sometimes possess the atmosphere of a horror game, leaving me tense as I raced against the clock to accomplish some objective I had set. But on other loops I was far more relaxed, just taking in the environment or experimenting with the mechanics further. Having the fear of death and significant consequences removed was relaxing; I could just enjoy and find the unspoken objectives at my own leisurely pace.
Closing the Loop
There is an ending to Outer Wilds, mind you. The mystery does eventually unfold, and a conclusion is reached. I overcame one final loop, fraught with danger and even the threat of permanent consequences this time around. But eventually, all the puzzle pieces were in place, I watched the ending, and I was able to roast a marshmallow one more time before the credits rolled. The sensation was…bittersweet. Finishing the game was an accomplishment, and I’m proud that I managed to reach it. But there’s a pervasive knowledge now that will forever color any attempts that I have to play Outer Wilds again. You can never go back to the first time…we can never experience those same sensations again.
The pervading knowledge is mechanical, also. All the tools and trinkets available from the start will carry you through to the end; what changes is simply the understanding of what you can accomplish with them. Some clues are less about the game’s core mystery, and more hints as to entire laws of physics. One simple sentence in the game — which I won’t spoil — absolutely blew my mind once I processed the practical implications. Subsequent “Ah-hah!” moments of the game felt like major triumphs the likes of which I so rarely experience in games nowadays.
This brings us neatly to the core element of what works so well in Outer Wilds: emergent gameplay design. At no point did the game do anything more than nudge me out into the solar system. I could go anywhere, do anything, and act purely on self-motivation and curiosity. Everything I needed was right in front of me from the outset, but my willingness to play with the systems and explore lead to massive revelations and ramifications. Even stumbling through the tutorial has a looseness to its structure. Hell, revisiting that opening section later in the game made me really just how many future clues had been hinted at there, hiding in plain sight.
I play a significant amount of RPGs; grinding experience, gathering stronger equipment, and attaining incremental upgrades to overall power is familiar territory to me. There’s objectives to complete, requests to answer, rewards to attain, achievements to grind…as much as I quite enjoy these gameplay loops, it can truly start to become a little too structured. Some games end up feeling too much like busywork and maintenance.
“You can never go back to the first time…we can never experience those same sensations again.”
But without that kind of gameplay hook, many players might feel lost or overwhelmed. What’s our next step? What must we do from here? If I can’t best this challenge, what can I do to ease future attempts? Abandoning these essential questions and leaving it up to the player to craft answers is a bold move. It’s to the absolute credit of Mobius Digital that Outer Wilds managed to pull this off with such aplomb. The preservation of the ship log, the marker within if there’s a remaining clue, and a handful of audio cues are all the guidance you’ll be receiving. There’s no mechanical benefit to completing anything; your reward is writing to read, and knowledge for future loops.
Even games of an exploratory, free-form nature tend to fall back on markers and progression systems. Minecraft has a progression system through various equipment tiers, assuming you don’t just take to Creative Mode and build things. Breath of the Wild is large and rewards exploration with unique vistas, but also tangible rewards of shrines or Korok seeds.
Unspoken Player Guidance
Strangely, the game that I most liken to Outer Wilds is Super Metroid. Landing on planet Zebes in Super Metroid, Samus is isolated. The atmosphere is oppressive, despite your weapons and abilities. But the opening sections of the game are a masterclass of game design. Super Metroid subtly guides the player to their first handful of upgrades, encouraging them to figure out what they can do with subtle prompts, and then set the tone and stakes as its once dead world starts to come alive around you.
From landing on the planet to the first boss, the only instruction or line of text given is how to swap weapons to missiles. Everything else is inferred by the player as they descend and then return from that quick expedition. This trend holds throughout all of Super Metroid, keeping guidance and lessons vague as you navigate the planet. But always, there’s cues in how the levels are designed or laid out that encourage you onward. Even the most advanced concepts like wall jumps and Shinesparking is conferred not by text, but by seeing friendly creatures do something similar, and then mimicking their actions.
It’s this kind of non-vocal discovery and guidance that both Outer Wilds and Super Metroid excel at. Laying out a world and systems at the player’s feet, the onus is on you to explore it. Objectives must be uncovered first, and then achieved. Allowing the player to come to grips with gameplay systems, but not explicitly telling them? That creates massively impactful moments once they’re discovered. This subtle, unspoken game design is far more difficult to accomplish, but the fact that Outer Wilds managed it continues to impress.
“Subtle, unspoken game design is far more difficult to accomplish, but the fact that Outer Wilds managed it continues to impress.”
Now, I don’t intend to conclude this write-up by saying that all direction or explicit instruction in games is bad. I like RPGs too much to champion eschewing all progression systems. Nonetheless, Outer Wilds took a chance with its design: here’s a ship and basic tools, now go forth into this solar system! Live, die, repeat, over and over and over again…no progression systems, checklists, or clearly delineated objectives; just a solar system filled with curiosities and a mystery at the centre of it. Knowledge and understanding is all you’ll take with you on your next attempt, and it’s all you truly need to make it through.
Player-driven emergent design is a rare thing to behold in a game as well-curated and constructed as Outer Wilds. I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did, yet I’ve only come to appreciate it more as I wrote this. Once I watched the recent Noclip documentary on the game’s development, I was even more impressed with the design principles that went into it. Games that demand your time and constant attention are increasingly prevalent, so something hands-off and indirect was a breath of fresh air that I didn’t know I’d need. Any confusion generated by Obsidian’s similarly-titled game are unfortunate, but Outer Wilds is surely worth your time for a player-driven experience. Also, you should go play Super Metroid. It’s real good.

[SF] Retro Nova [Taste]
“If you are hearing this please send help. While exploring the cosmos I’ve taken a wrong turn and am now lost 30° left of Centaurus A. The void grows much colder and darker as I slowly drift out and I’m unsure as to the feasibility of my oxygen recycler once I’ve drifted too far from the nearest stars. I am surrounded by celestial bodies I’ve never heard of nor seen before and it makes me question just how correct we are in our assumptions of the universe. As time keeps passing a dull erie whine akin to electrical coils seems to grow louder and louder and I cannot tell if it is my suit itself or the doing of some otherworldly event we’ve not detected before.”
Click
“This message will repeat. To play the next message press one. To stop playing this message press two. To hear all other options press three. To hear these options again press four.”
Click
Everyone on board falls silent, the only noise to defy this hush being the faint hum of the engines far back and the metallic creaking as the ship slowly continues its trek through the vast nothing.
A deeper voice sounds from a corner of the room, belonging to a tall, masked figure draped in layers of tattered cloth “Play the next message, if this is him we might’ve just found a trail still hot.”
Click
“Next message”
Click
“The whine of the universe seems to now peirce my skull and the nearby star has begun to show signs of intelligence, evident by his voice echoing through my head near constantly. From what I can tell he seems to be using this high frequency as a means to communicate, though this does not explain how or why he knows English. And the star is a he, from the voice he speaks with to him apparently enjoying the name ‘Kevin’ all evidence seems to point to the star having a male gender. If you have missed my first message, this is not a misplaced audio log this is a plea for help. I am a star voyager and seem to have taken a wrong turn while exploring an uncharted portion of the universe. While I am no stranger to being lost I seem to have left my celestial compass in my other pants and now have no way of finding a route home. Please, if you are listening to this keep course straight and in line with the plane of this galaxy. I’ve done my best to make myself as traceable as possible so please hurry, ‘Kevin’ is slowly getting on my last nerves.”
Click
“This message will repeat. To play the next message press one. To stop playing this message press two. To hear all other options press three. To hear these options again press four.”
Click
A smaller figure speaks up from a chair near the comm station, her femimine voice rings out “I wonder what our other options are”.
The man in the corner replies, “It doesn’t matter, what does is getting to the bottom of this missing person. The feds have offered a large sum for this individual and if our sources are to be believed this is the one”. The ship groans and shutters. “Play the next message, the faster we find them the faster we can afford something that isn’t a tin can with thrusters.”
Click
“Next message”
Click
“If you have received my previous messages and are heading towards me please hurry, ‘Kevin’ has grown increasingly excited and will no longer stay quiet. I believe he has gone mad from isolation and now that he has proven he can keep me in his orbit he never ceases to ramble endlessly about nonsensical, meaningless nothings from times far before I arrived. The dull whine of the galaxies has grown into a hum and I fear the pending space-time collapse is nearly past the point of no return. Wherever I am seems to feel the amplified effects of this and the gravity of ‘Kevin’ and even space itself seems to be fluctuating far more than before. I can’t make out much of what ‘Kevin’ says but from time to time I pick out snippets of ‘the great happening’ and ‘the times the universe was even though it wasn’t’. I’ve no idea as to what he is referring to but I need to escape now more than ever, spending the end of the universe as we know it monotony consisting of ‘Kevin’s delusional ramblings is NOT how I want to go out.”
Click
“This message will repeat. To play the next message press one. To stop playing this message press two. To hear all other options press three. To hear these options again press four.”
Click
“This guy really seems to keep a story log for someone just asking for rescue” a stocky figure retorts from stool positioned near the doorway, “go ahead and play the next one, you know the drill by now 7” he calls out in a gravelly, flat voice.
Click
“Next message.”
Click
“Hey Mik- err 18! It’s Bill! I was just lettin’ you know I dropped your bike off at your house. I even cleaned it and made it all nice and shiny again to say thanks fer lettin’ me borrow it! Man I tell you what, that thing’s a real lady killer, I couldn’t keep em off m-”
Click
“Message ended. To playback all messages press one. To playback previous message press two. For more options press three. To hear your options again press four.”
Click
“So, you’re a biker now?”, a woman asks from a grand, centralized chair.
“It’s uh, it’s mainly just for looks. I ride it a little but I just think it’s some mean lookin’ machinery”, 18, the man on the stool, replies.
“Oh. So just a new way to get another wife then?”, the woman answers back.
“Hey! Now listen! I don’t go out huntin’ fer them! They come to me!”
The clothed man interrupts, “Please, act professional! 18 I’m used to this crap from you, that doesn’t mean you can’t try to keep it to a minimal. 9, you should be better than this. What if someone overhears this? Do you think they’d believe you as captain or do you think they’d suspect you as a false positive? No more of this if you want to sit in that chair.”
“Yes sir”, they both respond
“Now then, 13 would you please set the ship’s thrusters faster? We seem to be on a direct course for him and I believe we can afford some extra speed over caution of heading the wrong way”
The slender figure near the commstation speaks up, “Yes sir!”

10 Sexy Texts That Will Make Him Fall In Love
Guys are often seen as stoic, silent creatures who “don’t want to talk about it.” If my coaching client calls tell me anything, it’s that a lot of women struggle with getting their guy to open up about his feelings.
Like I’ve said in my past blog posts, men are often taught at an early age that losing their cool (i.e. showing emotions) is a sign of weakness.
It might seem like we’re the unreadable Sphinx, but the truth is that we do have a soft and gooey center – if you know how to get to it.
(I just realized that sounds a bit gross…)
But the hidden, private part of him is reserved for that special woman in our life.
If you can crack the secret code to make him open up, he’ll know you’re “The One“.
Text messaging is one of the ways you can tell a guy that you’re the right girl for him – but indirectly.
Men are known for communicating in a straight-to-the-point, let’s-not-beat-around-the-bush kind of way.
But not when it comes to dating and romance…
He won’t say it (or even be consciously aware of it), but your guy is always be up for a nice, steamy session of text flirting. He lives for the thrill of the chase.
And beating around the bush is, in fact, a GOOD thing for both of you.
Considering the way a guy’s brain is wired, sending him a well-crafted text message is just like throwing a match into a gunpowder.
Yes, your man is a powder keg of love (and lust!) that’s just waiting for a chance to explode. Here are 10 of the best text messages to light his fuse:
#1: “My mind’s been running wild with naughty, naughty thoughts all day…and it’s all your fault”
Just like you, men want to be WANTED.
Most women want men to acknowledge their beauty and personality, but your typical guy is after a more sensual kind of longing.
Desire begets desire.
Your man needs to know that he’s running through your mind harder than a triathlete gunning for the gold medal.
When he’s aware that you’re ALSO thinking of him in an R-rated kind of way, you’ll create a feedback loop that’s directly wired into a primal part of his brain.
Naturally, he’ll push you to elaborate on what you just told him – the next step is to supply him with one detail at a time.
EXAMPLE: “I was thinking of the weight of your body pressing against me.”
After you’ve texted back and forth for a while, wrap things up by saying “I’d love to keep this going, but I have to get back to work (or any other reason of your choice).”
You want to end it – and leave him wanting more.
Then, finish it off with:
“Besides, I’d rather continue this conversation face to face… I’ll let you count the minutes until then :)”
How detailed you want to get is up to you. But if your conversations at this point aren’t getting sexy yet, I suggest keeping the tone suggestive rather than using actual explicit words…for now.
#2: “I’m feeling like FedEx right now…because I’m interested in a certain package of yours ;)”
Did you just indirectly reference a part of his anatomy?
Yeah you did – and he’ll love you for it.
Let me be totally blunt with you – a red-blooded man loves it when his woman “wants his biz“.
The thought of a girl craving his manhood is all it takes to get him firing on all cylinders.
A man derives a BIG part of his masculinity from this part of himself, so he’ll feel extremely gratified knowing that you want him in this very specific way.
Yet another flirty text – #3: “Nothing sounds better than hearing you say my name when you _________. I’ll just let you fill in the blank :)”
Never underestimate the power of a horny man’s imagination. We’re first and foremost visual creatures, so give our mind’s eye something to work with.
We’re tantalized by what we can’t (or want to) see. Give your guy’s mind an excuse to work overtime, and he’ll create the perfect image to burn into his brain.
By letting him “fill in the blank”, you’re basically giving him a free pass to picture the two of you in the dirtiest situation he can imagine.
Trust me, he’ll want to fill in those blanks in more ways than one… if you know what I mean.
Try this text – #4: “Wanted: sexy, handsome guy to supply love-starved girl with a steady shower of kisses. Generous perks and benefits await qualified candidates.”
Send this separately: “Only one spot open…let me know if you’re interested.”
Pro tip: Your text messages don’t always have to read like a page out of “Fifty Shades of Grey”.
You don’t have to sound like an erotica author all the time, and he’ll appreciate you mixing it up with a little levity. Also known as FUN.
As much as he appreciates the raunchy stuff, shifting gears every now and then keeps you from being too “intense”. A dash of humor will break up the monotony, give him a nice chuckle and STILL keep the sexy vibe going.
(Oh, and feel free to customize this “sexy ad” text with your own “job description”.)
A good girlfriend knows how to tickle his funny bone…along with the other parts of his body.
Super texting – #5: “I was just thinking about the sounds we make when we’re alone together. It’s like a song stuck in my head and I can’t think of anything else.”
Guys aren’t just turned on by visuals. Supplying his brain with the right soundtrack is just as powerful and will complement his dirty daydreams.
Use audio and engage his senses…
#6: “I need to hear you say my name…especially when it’s out LOUD and you’re out of breath.”
As with the last text, planting strategic “audio clips” will have a HUGE effect on him – sometimes even more than the pictures in his head.
Give your guy the best snippets from the last time you got physical with him, and he’ll be craving you so much that it hurts.
#7: “Licking a lollipop right now, and I can’t stop thinking of you for some reason. I can’t put my finger on it…maybe you should come over and help me figure out why.”
And we’re back to visuals! I’ll admit some guys can be dense, but 99.9999% of men will immediately understand this text.
Trust me, this is one metaphor that WON’T fly over his head.
#8: “Just thinking about the way your tongue feels against my skin…great, now I need to freshen up down south… Care to help?”
Yeah, this one’s self-explanatory, so make sure you’re ready for what happens next when you fire off this little gem.
#9: “It’s freezing here and I’ve buried myself under a bunch of blankets. Not wearing anything was probably a wrong move.”
Not all sexy texts have to be graphic. In some cases, less is more and implying nakedness is a good way to pull this off.
Remember, sexual desire is like gravity…sometimes all you need is a little push and the rest takes care of itself.
Keep it to hints as much as you can. Guys like dirty when you’re WITH him, but they prefer imagination when you’re not.
#10: “I’m playing film critic today and found a movie online…but it’s a porn flick. Wanna watch it with me? Your input would be highly appreciated.”
“Playful” is the operative word when it comes to texting a man. Inviting him to watch porn is a guy’s secret wish, so you get extra points by being creative about it.
Of course, choose something that you genuinely DO want to watch.
Most of the time, turning him on boils down to a matter of pointing his mind in the direction you want. Give him the right material, and he’ll run with it.
You probably know by now that it doesn’t take much to get him started.
While sending him the right text messages is a step in the right direction, it’s only ONE PART of that special combination that will unlock his heart.
And by “combination”, I mean cultivating certain behaviors, attitudes and habits that speak to your man in a way no other woman can.
If you want to be THAT girl in your guy’s life, I’ve found a way to simplify the process and take you to the quickest path to his heart.
For instance, did you know that you need to know how to match his connection style?
I’ve prepared a short video that will explain what his connection style is – and why it’s critical you know this about him.
This is the missing piece in the love puzzle that a lot of women miss – and this often spells the difference between staying together and splitting up.
