I've been thinking of how a Nine Sols story set on a modern Earth would play out, as one does.

So far I've had two ideas. One's a follow up to the Shooting Star ending that involves the Solarian ship used by Kuafu and the Apemen getting unearthed that I might post separately about if I can actually get my thoughts in order. The other is basically 'what if New Kunlun showed up in the Solar system in our time.'

The thing is, I couldn't help but notice the similarities between the Solarians/Sols and the Ethereals from the Xcom games. Both are technologically advanced civilizations being driven to extinction by a disease and have invaded Earh to harvest humans in their efforts to find a cure, all the while presenting themselves as benevolent gods to those humans.

So now I've spent a considerable amount of time brainstorming how a Nine Sols and Xcom crossover au / total conversion mod would look like lore- and gameplay-wise. Here's the setup:

After realizing that the sapients on the Pale Blue planet are more advanced and numerous than initial images from the Haotian Sphere suggested (though still primitive by Solarian standards), the Tiandao council decides that instead of abducting a few hundred (or however many Apemen there were on Kunlun in canon) and leaving the rest of the species to fend for themselves in an ice age caused by the Fusang blocking sunlight, they'd colonize the planet proper. Not only would this make it easier for them to access their precious livestock. In their minds, it would also only be fair, even noble of them to uplift the remainder of the species with their science (or at least it's how the Sols that aren't Jiequan cope with the abject atrocities their plan involves).

For their invasion, they bring along a larger number of the biomechanical soldiers we see in the game, a fleet of Yuanbao ships (which do kind of look like flying saucers and by extension the xcom UFOs), as well as unseen warmachines from the Turbulent Era.

Right before Kunlun launches, like in canon, Yi discovers the secret behind Tianhuo and is murdered by Eigong.

After warping to the Solar system, the Sols spend maybe a few years preparing for the invasion, during which they abduct some humans to more thoroughly study what they're like. The actual invasion goes the way it does in XCOM 2 canon, with the Sols defeating any resistance and creating their worldwide regime (I haven't thought what it would be called yet, but it wouldn't be something as western as ADVENT). The date New Kunlun makes landfall on Earth is celebrated like Unification Day at the start of XCOM 2. Though I haven't decided whether it should be situated in the middle of the Pacific like the Etherals' facility or somewhere closer to land.

Instead of XCOM 2's Psionic network, there's a Rhizomatic/Fusang network created by the spread of Fusang roots from Kunlun throughout the Earth, generating clean energy and allowing for communication and maybe even teleportation due to their connection with the Limitless Realm.

The Gene therapy clinics are still a thing in this version of the story. We know Solarians in canon did gene modding. The Apemen were modified and the reason Tianhuo even exists is because Eigong tried to make Solarians genetically immortal. Like in XCOM 2, the clinics are also used to disappear an increasing number of humans, to be harvested for their brains, as well as biomass for Jiequan's transmutation factories and after a certain point, for Eigong's experiments with Tianhuo and the Tianhuo mutation.

As for Tianhuo itself, it is obviously kept secret from the humans. The official narrative as to why most Solarians are still in cryosleep is that humanity still needs to be 'raised' some more before they are ready to mingle with such an advanced species. The few non-Sols that have been woken up to help administer the planet are ones Eigong's made sure are loyal to her and even then, still closely monitored so they don't reveal anything.

Again, like in XCOM canon, at a certain point, survivors of the invasion led by Bradford get together to reform XCOM to start a guerrilla war against the Sols, steal an alien ship to use as a mobile base etc, etc. But no matter what they do, they can't seem to find the Commander. It's at this point that Yi wakes up.

Because Yi becomes the Commander in this au.

Instead of getting revived on New Kunlun, the Fusang roots, which stretch across the Earth now, spit him out in rural China. He's found and nursed back to health by Shuanshuan, whose parents left to get gene therapy in a city center some time ago but haven't been heard of since (the local representative insisted that they decided to stay, since the Sols make sure life is so much better there and as soon as there's an available spot, Shuanshuan will be able to join them).

At this point, I'm split on some key details. An idea I have is that initially, the roots revive Yi in a human disguise, specifically as a dead ringer for the missing Commander. This would make it easier for the rest of XCOM to trust him at the start, but would cause interesting conflict later (plus it would be so wonderfully karmic for him to have to be one of the humans he condemned into the role of cattle, and also I like me some TF in my fanfic). However, I'm worried about the effect this would have on Yi's and Shuanshuan's relationship. We know he's older than he looks in Solarian form, but still not that much older, so them as brothers still works. The Commander would have to be an older human, so if he looked like that, it'd start feeling less like a brotherhood and more like a father-son thing, which I'm not sure I want.

Otherwise, he'd claim he's a random defecting Solarian, demonstrating his hatred for the Sols in some way that convinces the humans to let him join them (though his getting the Commander's role is harder to justify in this case).

Either way, Shuanshuan refuses to part from Yi and is begrudgingly let on board the Avenger (which Yi realizes is his former personal transport and research ship, even being partly modelled after his Pavilion back on Kunlun). Either way, Yi gets to witness the devastation caused by the colonization that he masterminded and to work to dismantle it.

I haven't fully thought up how the rest of the story would play out, what the missions would be like and whatnot.

One thing I want there to be is XCOM being the one to discover an actual cure for Tianhuo, preferably through a method that combines science and the supernatural power of the Limitless realm. I like the sci-fi trope where humanity is the key element in figuring out something important, even when more advanced civilisations are involved. And I know that accepting the inevitability of the Solarians' extinction is a main theme in 9s, but it would also be fitting and nice if genuine help from humans (instead of them as cattle) proved to be the salvation not only for Yi, but for all remaining Solarians, giving them some hope.

Though Yi still gets to die heroically at the end and reunite with Heng within the infinite Tao, as a treat.

I''ve got more ideas about this that I want to share, but am too tired to rn. As a final note for now: Advent Burgers (or a differently named equivalent) are also very much a thing in this au and are enjoyed by both humans and awoken Solarians.

I'm trying to build a wuxia world that's modern. But I'm having serious trouble with all the outdated ideas and lifestyles as well as modern understanding of science. All the mechanics as well as fighting are basically scientific, but extended and exaggerated to be made like it's magic. Problem is, modern science refutes all that. Especially about the readily known or secret everything is in the modern world. I could explain in more detail or specific ideas, but it's not easy in English.

Tex: Wuxia is inherently a genre of historical fantasy, so I understand the struggle with bringing it into a modern setting. Let me paste a short Wikipedia synopsis in to help orient me, with a Chinese version so you have something in a more navigable language.

The word "wǔxiá" is a compound composed of the elements wǔ (武, literally "martial", "military", or "armed") and xiá (俠, literally "chivalrous", "vigilante" or "hero"). A martial artist who follows the code of xia is often referred to as a xiákè (俠客, literally "follower of xia") or yóuxiá (遊俠, literally "wandering xia"). In some translations, the martial artist is referred to as a "swordsman" or "swordswoman" even though he or she may not necessarily wield a sword.

The heroes in wuxia fiction typically do not serve a lord, wield military power, or belong to the aristocratic class. They often originate from the lower social classes of ancient Chinese society. A code of chivalry usually requires wuxia heroes to right and redress wrongs, fight for righteousness, remove oppressors, and bring retribution for past misdeeds. Chinese xia traditions can be compared to martial codes from other cultures such as the Japanese samurai bushidō.

Both versions have a section on common elements and themes found in the wuxia genre. This is good, because it helps us break down the core of the genre, and how we can bring this out of the historical setting.

“Wu” encompasses the traditions of martial arts and its accompanying subculture. There are plenty of martial arts schools in China and other parts of the world, so it would be easy to research how they have adapted to the modern world.

“Xia” is a bit harder. The Chinese version stops at the definition that it is a Confucian value, whereas the English version breaks the definition down into more items. Let me copy down what the English version states in its “Code of xia” section:

The eight common attributes of the xia are listed as benevolence, justice, individualism, loyalty, courage, truthfulness, disregard for wealth, and desire for glory. Apart from individualism, these characteristics are similar to Confucian values such as ren (仁; "benevolence", "kindness"), zhong (忠; "loyalty"), yong (勇; "courage", "bravery") and yi (義; "righteousness").[11] The code of xia also emphasises the importance of repaying benefactors after having received deeds of en (恩; "grace", "favour") from others, as well as seeking chou (仇; "vengeance", "revenge") to bring villains to justice. However, the importance of vengeance is controversial, as a number of wuxia works stress Buddhist ideals, which include forgiveness, compassion and a prohibition on killing.

These attributes, as well as the mentioned Buddhist ones, can also be found in works set in modern times.

The issue of “scientific” versus “magical” is a complex one to tackle, specifically because many of the subgenres in martial arts films (or literature) rely upon a suspension of disbelief in some element or another. Usually this relates to either the plot - lending an element of the ridiculous - or the style of fighting - lending an element of skepticality.

This is usually because the goal of the story matters more. In wuxia and related genres, this is due to a moral compass being instilled in main characters, and functions as one of the main driving forces behind the plot. This is something popular of many action films, ranging from John Wick to Kill Bill to Kingsman. Morality is a popular element in storytelling, though admittedly popularity often rests on how visually appealing it is (something more difficult with text).

Because of this, it ultimately does not matter how realistic the fighting is or is not - so long as the main concepts are covered, then you have a wuxia story. That being said, martial arts often stretches the preconceived notions of what a human body can do; with sufficient training, things like high jumps (x, x) and triple kicks (x, x) are well within the realm of believability.

Ninja Assassin has realistic martial artistry, but it bends believability under the assumption that an audience’s preconceived scope of potential is very narrow. The same goes approximately for The Grandmaster (2013), albeit from a literally historical perspective while being set in the mid 20th century.

Some popular films that you could use as a reference for varying degrees of suspending disbelief are: Kung Fu Hustle (2004), The Night Comes for Us (2018), The Karate Kid (either version), and Fatal Contact (2006).

In terms of moving around the “fantasy” part of wuxia to something similar, The Matrix series accomplishes many wuxia themes, and some rather pointedly, while occupying a futuristic setting.

While I don’t know if this precisely answers your question, particularly in regards to the technical feasibility of martial arts as popularly demonstrated in wuxia, I would be more than happy to expand on my answer if you wish.

K so, I can't not mix things that I like so an MXTX novels YgoISH au has been created. So some ideas for the au:

Millenial items? Not really.

The Lan family is basically like the Ishtars, except their mission is only to keep items safe and supresed (they collect dangerous, usually very much possesed, items). But something happened and a lot of items were lost, now they’re looking for them.

Yue Qingyuan and Mu Qingfang are Shen Yuan’s older brothers and Ning Yingyi his younger sister. Shen Yuan has a fan -possesed by Shen Jiu- that he can`t get rid of. Shen Jiu has a personal vendeta against Luo Binghe because Luo Binghe’s past life was the one who brought his end.

Mo Xuanyu has Chenqing -possesed by Wei Wuxian (the only good ghost out of the main 3). He kind of wants to help Wei Wuxian gain the memories of when he was alive.

Xie Lian has the crying-smiling mask (possesed by White No Face). He’s also the one who has had the item the longest, he kind of has given up cuz no matter how hard he tries he doesn’t seem to be able to free himself from the godforsaken mask, yet it terrifies him all the same.

Lan Zhan has dreams of his past life.

The vessels (Mo Xuanyu, Shen Yuan and Xie Lian) recieve messages and missions from The System. Nobody knows what The System’s objective is; sometimes it gets them to do good things, sometimes not so good things and other ties it’s control is too much. About two month ago started a new Sims 4 account which has a Hetalia character as townies. I don’t have all the packs for Sims 4 but I do use a lot of Mods to do this. Most of the house building I found online.

there's this really one good twilight spite fic i found on a03 called be careful what you wish for, Bella has to face the consequences for becoming a vampire and as the story continues leah gets a lot of focus

I’ve been reading that for the last three days, since I saw this ask. Currently on chapter 29. I hate you anon. here’s a link if you care for it. obviously, keep in mind that this is still in the same universe as twilight, so the racist worldbuilding is still there, unfortunately. As for the rest, so far there are only two things I didn’t like: Leah says that it’s “racist” how Sam makes generalisations about the vampires (lol no), and that reporter chick that’s like “That Sam guy is so barely civil yi ke s.“

However, it does call out the vampires in their own racism many times, it shows an interesting perspective on Bella’s character (+ the rest of the Cullens), and how fucked up imprinting is through Jacob. Also, Chuckesmee,,,creepy but also I thought the same when I first read the book “her superpower is literal mind control!!!!”

I feared

Mod Gotham says: The morning after turtle soup...

Daylight knifed through Claire’s heavy eyelids.

The ship rolled – and so did her stomach – and she found the bucket helpfully left beside the berth, just in time.

Her arm and head throbbed in time with her racing heart.

When had they made it to the berth? The grain of the polished wood floor dug into the still-healing sores on her legs. Why hadn’t she treated them properly last night?

She looked up, blinking, squinting – saw her shift sprawled across the table at the center of the cabin.

Ah. Bloody Yi Tien Cho and his bloody delicious turtle soup…

The door burst open.

Twin shrieks – Claire Fraser in indignation, Marsali Fraser in surprise.

“What the bloody fucking hell do you want?” Claire croaked.

“Where are yer clothes?” Marsali demanded.

Claire crossed her arms – as best as she could – over her chest. “Over there – I’d be grateful if you could fetch them. Your…Jamie must have been in quite a hurry to leave them over there.”

Marsali tsked as she crossed the room, picking up Claire’s shift and sliding it over her shoulders. Feeling very much like a child, Claire huffed – but was thankful for the help getting back into the berth.

“You don’t happen to have any water, do you?”

Marsali drew a waterskin from her basket. “I do. Fresh – we found a spring back on the island. And some hardtack, from the kitchens. I let it soak in water first, just as ye showed me when we left Scotland.”

Claire awkwardly patted the empty space on the berth, and Marsali gratefully sank beside her, helping Claire drink from the waterskin, then crumble the hardtack into bite-sized pieces.

“Thank you,” she said after a while. Feeling slightly more human. “Thank you for looking in on me.”

She turned – slowly, carefully – to face the girl – woman! – beside her.

“Ye’re welcome,” Marsali replied carefully. “I – I’m happy to have ye back. Daddy was – weel. He wasna himself, wi’out ye here. Fergus and I tried to keep him straight – ”

Claire smiled. “Brave of you to try. But thank you. And I know I owe you an answer, from our chat last night – ”

“Dinna fash. Fergus – it was fine last night. We’ll be fine, until ye’re well enough.” Her eyes shone.

“But Marsali, even once can be enough – ”

Two raps at the door – then Yi Tien Cho’s gray head peered through.

“Honorable Wife – I have come to look at your arm.”

Claire sighed. Marsali quickly left the half-full waterskin and bowl of damp hardtack on the bunk and scurried out of the cabin. Yi Tien Cho carefully approached the berth, holding a green glass bottle and fresh bandages.

“May I?”

Claire nodded, pushing up the sleeve of her shift. He knelt before her, swiftly unwrapping the bandage on her arm to examine his eight neat stitches.

“How does it look?”

Yi Tien Cho lay a gentle hand at her elbow, and produced a bit of mirror from a deep pocket. “Can you see for yourself?”

Claire craned her neck – sure enough, he had positioned the mirror to perfectly show her the wound. It was inflamed a bit – that was to be expected. But no pus – no obvious sign of infection.

“I wash it again with the alcohol. A few more days until the stitches come out.”

She nodded. “I agree – thank you.”

He set down the mirror, uncorked the bottle, dampened a clean rag, and gently, gently dabbed at the wound.

She hissed – but held still.

“Thank you again for the wonderful soup last night,” she grimaced through clenched teeth. “It – it certainly took my mind off the pain.”

“I can make more, if you like – still have half the turtle in the kitchen.” He corked the bottle, folded the rag, and set both on the table in the middle of the cabin – so that she could tend to herself later, she realized, touched at his thoughtfulness.

“Thank you, but make sure the men get some. They deserve it, after all the hardships they’ve endured.” She sat back against the wall, folding her legs over the edge of the berth, hissing as the fabric chafed her sensitive skin.

Soft as a butterfly’s wings, Yi Tien Cho’s fingers skimmed over the still-healing sores below both of her knees. “You too have endured much hardship, Honorable Wife – for the sake of the man you love. You deserve more than anyone here.”

Tears suddenly welled – and she grabbed his hand, squeezing his fingers in silent thanks. He only met her eye for a brief moment – squeezed her fingers back – then stood, hands sliding to her wrists.

“Your pulse is too shallow. I make you a tea. And also a poultice for your legs. The damp air, it is not good for healing.”

She smiled, so thankful for this strange, generous, gentle man.

“Thank you. Thank you for looking after me. I know Jamie appreciates it.”

“And you stay here. In bed. I’ll find your husband, let him know you awake now.” He glowered at her, as much as was possible. “No walking. No going on deck. You stay.”

“I will. I’ll be careful.”

He nodded – and bowed – and padded out of the cabin.

The deck heaved once more, and Claire leaned her head back against the wood of the cabin wall, in pain and disoriented and yet strangely content.

As she had many times before, she turned inward. Taking stock of her body – from her toes, to her stinging shins, to the bruise forming on her thigh where she’d injected herself with penicillin, to the strained muscles in her back where Jamie had bent her over last night…

Jamie. Where the bloody hell was he? There were plenty of footsteps abovedeck, and shouts periodically filtered through the ceiling. Two days to Jamaica, Father Fogden had said. That would mean at least one more day and night before she had to rejoin humanity…

She didn’t realize she had dozed off until the bolt scraped firmly into the lock.

“Sassenach? Are ye awake?”

Her eyes flew open – her head full of sand – and she clutched the bucket for dear life.

Jamie flew across the cabin, setting down a bowl somewhere on the floor – bracing her back as her stomach heaved, careful of her injured arm.

“Ye didn’t react this way to the sea on the earlier part of our journey.”

She spit into the bucket, wiped the back of her mouth, and glared up at him. “That’s because I wasn’t bloody hung over, was I?”

Christ, he was so beautiful when he smiled.

“A rough night then, was it?”

She pushed the bucket away, and he swiftly lifted it to the floor, settling on the berth beside her. His hands sought and found hers, big thumbs caressing her knuckles.

“I haven’t been this hung over since the day we married.”

“And such a bonny day it was, too.” He kissed her cheek, then pulled back, twining his fingers through hers.

A long moment passed.

“Yer skin feels cooler this morning. I – I dinna mind stabbing ye wi’ the…penicillin if ye need.”

“Yes, I do feel much better. But I shouldn’t need another dose – I’ll see how I’m doing tonight.” She paused. “Why couldn’t you do it, Jamie? I’ve seen you do so many things, but – ”

“Because I ken it hurts like the devil, and…weel. I couldna hurt ye, Claire.”

Her brow rose skeptically. “Even when you know that it would help me be well?”

He pursed his lips. “I – I could never stand it, knowing I caused ye pain. And especially no’ after everything we’ve endured, these past weeks.” One hand gently cradled her cheek, forcing her eyes to meet his. “God, Claire – I was so afraid…”

She shifted closer, melting against him.

“I was on the island for two days…all alone…terrified I’d never see you again. Or that I’d be too late, and have to bury you…”

“No!” he whispered urgently against her temple. “No, Claire – I would *never* do that to ye. Never.”

She clutched the front of his shirt with her good hand, anchoring herself to him. “Can you stay here, today? With me?”

He kissed her forehead. “Aye. I came upon Willoughby on my way here – he asked me to help ye wi’ a paste for yer legs.”

She shifted back, throwing her legs over his lap. Jamie brought her shift above her knees, and cursed at the welts.

“How did I no’ see these yesterday? What the hell happened to ye, Claire?”

“Ants. Lots of them. And it’s better than a few days ago – Mamacita had quite the healing touch.”

Jamie reached for the clay bowl on the table, setting it on the berth and taking a scoop with the tips of his fingers.

He sniffed skeptically. “Smells like…garlic and honey?”

Claire purred with pleasure as the mixture cooled her aching skin.

“That’s exactly what I would have done. Both are excellent at preventing itching and inflammation. Did he provide fresh bandages as well?”

“Aye – I suppose I wrap you all up once I’m done?”

“That would be lovely.”

Gently he massaged her legs, rubbing the mixture in a soothing clockwise motion.

Claire enjoyed the simple pleasure of his touch – and watching him at close proximity.

“I’m so sorry,” he said, after a long while. “I – ye shouldna have had to endure this.”

She ruffled his hair. “I chose to.”

He sighed, wiping his hands on a rag before wrapping the fresh bandages on her legs. “I ken that. But it doesna mean that I canna wish things had been different.”

“I love you.”

He stopped then – looked up, and met her eyes. Quickly – but no less gently – he wrapped her other leg, then gathered her battered body to his chest. Cradling her. Shielding her from the world.

“Do ye remember the first time I held ye like this?” His voice was low – deep. Thick with feeling.

She nodded, sucking on his neck. “I had just finished doctoring you. At Leoch.”

He swallowed. She dug her nails into the base of his skull.

“That’s the moment I fell in love wi’ ye, Claire. That – that feeling to love, to cherish. To want. To protect. It’s never changed. Never gone away. Not once.”

Now she used her teeth on the long, stubbly column of his throat.

“I canna live wi’out ye. I won’t – ”

“You won’t have to,” she breathed. “Not ever.”

She tilted her chin, and he kissed her, framing her sunburned face in his work-roughened hands.

Then he tugged the shift over her shoulders, and stood so that she could watch him slowly shuck his shirt and breeches and boots. Nestling skin on skin, Claire lying against the wall on her left side, Jamie facing her, his back to the cabin and his legs carefully wound through hers, they shared breath and wine and space. Fortifying themselves in each other. Making time stop.
