Wet Beast Wednesday: vampire squid
It's squidtember, everybody! To celebrate, we'll discuss the vampire squid, which is... not actually a squid. It's not a vampire either. I'll let you decide which is more disappointing. No, the vampire squid isn't a squid or an octopus or even a cuttlefish, it's its own thing, the only surviving member of order Vampyromorphida, a sister group of the octopi. Let's dig into this unique cephalopod.
Tumblr media
(Image: a vampire squid. It is an octopus-like animal a dark red in color with large eyes and a pair of fins on the mantle. The arms are relatively short and are held together. End ID)
The scientific name of the vampire squid is Vampyroteuthis infernalis, which means "vampire squid from hell". With a name like that you'd expect it to be a badass predator, but it isn't. The name comes from its red color and arm membranes that are visually similar to a cape. They're also on the small side, maxing out at around 30 cm (about 1 foot), half of which is the body and the other half being the arms. The body is mostly a dark red color. Its body plan is similar to an octopus, with eight arms. On the body is a pair of fins and while the skin is covered in bioluminescent cells called photophores, they lack the color-changing chromatophores that allow octopi, squid, and cuttlefish to change their color so radically. The eye of the vampire squid is the largest in proportion to body size of any animal and the vampire squid likely has very good vision. The vampire squid has an internal shell called a gladius that is common to cephalopods but has been lost in octopi. The galdius helps maintain buoyancy, aided by a high concentration of ammonia in the body and inner ear-like organs called statocysts.
Tumblr media
(Image: a vampire squid with its arms extended, revealing that they are connected to each other by a membrane that reaches almost to the tips of the arms. End ID)
The arms are connected to each other by a membrane called a cloak. The inner sides of the arms are line with fleshy cirri and only have suckers at the very tips. In between the base of the arms is the beak. Also within the cloak are a pair of pouches that contain the tactile velar filaments (side note: why the fuck does Tumblr's spell check recognize velar but not cephalopod?). The filaments are very long, very slender modified arms that are covered with sensory hairs. The filaments retract back into their pouches when not in use. The filaments are used in feeding similarly to the tentacles of squid, but they are not derived from the same feature. The common ancestor of octopi and vampyromorphids had 10 arms. The octopi eventually lost a pair while the vampyromorphids modified a pair into the filaments.
Tumblr media
(Image: a vampire squid with one of its filaments extended from within the arms. The filament looks like a long string that is hanging in the water. End ID)
The vampire squid is found worldwide in tropical and temperate latitudes at depths within the midnight zone, where no light reaches. They are extremophiles, organisms that live in extreme environments. This isn't because of being deep-sea organisms, but because of the particular part of the deep sea they are specialized to live in. Vampire squids live in oxygen minimum zones, regions of the deep sea that have drastically lower levels of dissolved oxygen that the surrounding area. Because oxygen is necessary for most life, oxygen minimum zones are very sparsely populated. To survive in such a low-oxygen environment, vampire squids have developed a very low metabolic rate (the lowest of all deep-sea cephalopods) and have very large gills. This allows them to extract every possible bit of oxygen from the water and let it last for a long time. The squid spend their time slowly swimming using their fins for propulsion, keeping movement to a minimum to reduce oxygen use. Food is scarce in the oxygen minimum zones and the vampire squids have adopted a low-energy feeding method. The eyes and velar filaments search through the water for bits of food, which the arms catch. The squid uses a mix of mucus and bodily waste excreted from the suckers to encase the food, forming a lovely mucus dumpling that the squid eats. The bioluminescence may also be used to attract prey. A vampire squid's diet consists largely of marine snow, bits of organic matter that falls from above. Marine snow largely consists of bits of dead animals, but a lot of it is also feces. The vampire squid form hell eats poop. Vampoo-er squid. It also eats zooplankton and maybe small fish, but that's less scandalous
Tumblr media
(Image: a vampire squid showing off the inside of its cloak. Each arm is lined with fleshy protrusions called cirri. At the center of the arms in a lump of flesh covering the beak. End ID)
Vampire squids can't afford to spend energy on fighting predators, so they have adapted some unique defense mechanisms. The red coloration is one of these. Red light is the first wavelength of visible light to be filtered out in water and as a result, many deep-sea animals can't see red light. To them, a vampire squid would seem invisible. The first defense mechanism vampire squids use is the pineapple pose, where they wrap their arms and cloak around their bodies to look like a spiky ball. If that doesn't deter predators, the squid can release sticky, glowing mucus from its suckers. This mucus can disorient the predator and will stick to it, making it vulnerable to predators of its own. While making an escape, the squid will use its bioluminescence to disorient the predator, especially flailing its glowing arms to create a very confusing sight. It can regrow the ends of its arms, making them an acceptable sacrifice if it means surviving the encounter.
Tumblr media
(Image: a vampire squid in the pineapple pose. Its arms and cloak are covering its body, exposing the cirri. This makes it look like a round object lined with rows of spines. End ID)
Like its octopus relatives, the vampire squid reproduces via the male inserting a packet of sperm into a hole in the female's mantle. The female can store the sperm for long periods of time until she is ready to use it. They may also be able to use only part of the sperm supply at a time while reserving the rest. While squid, cuttlefish, and octopi only mate once before dying, vampire squid appear to mate multiple times in their lives. Eggs may take over a year to hatch and the juveniles are born as 8-mm miniature versions of the adults. The juveniles live in deeper water than the adults and survive on an internal yolk sac for some time after hatching. Curiously, the juveniles are born with a single pair of fins, then grow another pair as they mature. Eventually the original pair of fins is lost and the new pair will chance shape and placement during maturation. This has led to vampire squids of different development stages being misidentified as different species in the past.
Tumblr media
(Image: a juvenile vampire squid. It's arms are shorter and it has two pairs of fins. End ID)
Vampire squid are classified as data deficient by the IUCN, meaning there is not enough data to determine what conservation needs they have. Their worldwide distribution indicates they are likely not at risk of extinction. They are believed to be vulnerable to microplastics, which drift downward like marine snow and are very likely to be mistaken for food by the squid. Microplastics can carry chemical loads that could be poisonous to the squid and can obstruct the digestive tract or trick the animal into thinking it is well-fed when it is actually full of indigestible plastic. Vampire squid are known to be prey to large fish and deep-diving marine mammal like toothed whales or seals. The vampire squid was discovered by the Valdivia Expedition of 1898-99 and was one of the animals caught that helped disprove a then-accepted hypothesis that the deep sea was lifeless. The azoic hypothesis or abyssus theory stated that ocean life diminished with depth and that, by extrapolating the existing numbers, the ocean would be lifeless below about 300 fathoms (550 m, 1,800 ft). The vampire squid was one of the earliest examples of animals captured from below that depth.

If you're looking for top-tier kitchen appliances that combine style, advanced technology, and unmatched functionality, the Blaupunkt 90cm Induction Cooktop is the answer. In this blog, we’ll dive deep into the features, benefits, and reasons why the Blaupunkt 90cm Induction Cooktop should be your next kitchen upgrade.
What is Induction Cooking?
Before we delve into the specifics of this fantastic appliance, let’s quickly cover what makes induction cooking different from traditional cooking methods. Induction cooktops use electromagnetic energy to heat pots and pans directly, which makes them far more efficient than gas or electric stoves. When the cooktop is switched on, an electromagnetic field is created beneath the cooking surface, which generates heat directly in the cookware, making the cooking process faster and more efficient.
Induction cooking is known for its precision, control, and speed, making it an ideal choice for modern kitchens.
Why Choose the Blaupunkt 90cm Induction Cooktop (Black)?
1. Sleek, Modern Design
One of the standout features of the Blaupunkt 90cm Induction Cooktop (Black) is its sleek, minimalist design. The smooth black ceramic glass surface is not only aesthetically pleasing but also easy to clean and maintain. Whether your kitchen is contemporary, traditional, or anything in between, the Blaupunkt cooktop seamlessly blends into any kitchen decor, adding a touch of sophistication to your space.
A large, 90cm surface provides plenty of room for multiple cooking zones. It’s perfect for large families or anyone who frequently entertains guests. Cooking multiple dishes at once becomes a breeze, making this cooktop the ideal choice for people who love to cook in bulk or with various cookware.
2. Efficient and Fast Cooking
One of the key benefits of the Blaupunkt 90cm Induction Cooktop (Black) is the speed at which it heats up. Induction cooktops are generally faster than gas or electric cooktops because they generate heat directly in the cookware. The Blaupunkt model offers rapid heating, allowing you to cook meals in record time. Whether you're boiling water, frying, or simmering a sauce, you’ll notice the difference in cooking times compared to traditional methods.
This is especially beneficial for those with busy schedules or anyone who simply values efficiency in the kitchen. The ability to cook meals in less time while maintaining energy efficiency is a huge advantage.
3. Precise Temperature Control
With the Blaupunkt 90cm Induction Cooktop, you get precise control over your cooking temperature. Induction cooking allows you to adjust the heat almost instantly, offering unmatched control over your cooking process. Whether you need to go from a gentle simmer to a rapid boil in seconds or adjust the heat for a delicate sauce, this cooktop has you covered.
The intuitive touch controls on the Blaupunkt 90cm Induction Cooktop make it easy to adjust settings to your liking. Whether you’re sautéing, searing, or boiling, you can ensure your food is cooked to perfection every time.
4. Multiple Cooking Zones
The Blaupunkt 90cm Induction Cooktop (Black) offers multiple cooking zones, allowing you to prepare multiple dishes simultaneously. It features four powerful cooking zones, providing ample space to use different-sized pots and pans. The cooking zones are designed to accommodate various cookware, from small saucepans to large stockpots.
This flexibility makes it ideal for large families, busy professionals, or those who love hosting dinner parties. You can easily manage multiple dishes, ensuring that everything is cooked to perfection without the stress of juggling stovetop space.
5. Energy Efficiency
When it comes to kitchen appliances, energy efficiency is a key factor to consider. The Blaupunkt 90cm Induction Cooktop is designed to be energy-efficient, as induction cooking uses less energy than traditional cooking methods. Because the heat is generated directly in the cookware, there’s less heat loss, resulting in faster cooking times and less wasted energy.
This energy efficiency not only saves you money on your energy bills but also reduces your carbon footprint, making it an environmentally friendly choice for your kitchen.
6. Safety Features
Safety is always a concern when it comes to cooking appliances, and the Blaupunkt 90cm Induction Cooktop excels in this area. Induction cooktops are inherently safer than gas or electric stoves because they don’t generate heat on the cooktop surface. The cooktop surface only heats up when a suitable pot or pan is placed on it, meaning there's less risk of burns or accidental fires.
The Blaupunkt cooktop also features child safety locks, automatic shut-off features, and residual heat indicators, making it a safe option for families with young children. Additionally, the cooktop remains cool to the touch around the cooking zones, reducing the risk of burns.
7. Easy to Clean
After cooking, cleaning up can be a chore. But with the Blaupunkt 90cm Induction Cooktop, cleaning is a breeze. The smooth glass ceramic surface is not only sleek but also easy to wipe down. Since induction cooking doesn’t generate heat on the surface, spills and splashes are less likely to burn onto the cooktop, making them easier to wipe off.
All you need is a damp cloth and a mild cleaning solution to keep the cooktop looking pristine. This makes the Blaupunkt induction cooktop an excellent choice for anyone who values both functionality and aesthetics in their kitchen appliances.
8. Durability and Reliability
Blaupunkt is a brand known for producing high-quality, durable products, and the Blaupunkt 90cm Induction Cooktop is no exception. how to survive a full course load in uni as a highly-sensitive person
Tumblr media Tumblr media
wanted to try this kind of "advice" post / letter to past me as a premed student who also happens to be an HSP that sometimes struggles to regulate her emotions and is frequently overwhelmed by little things... this is a combo of things i'm glad i did in uni and what hindsight tells me i should've done... i hope that if any of this sounds relevant to you, whether you feel like you're an HSP or not, that you're able to take something useful away from it. and please feel free to reblog with your own tips/advice if you feel i missed something here! i'm just a sample size of 1.
part 1:
If you felt overwhelmed by your course load in high school, for the love of God, don't take the maximum (or “recommended”, which is the maximum at my uni) course load in your first year just to “graduate on time.” Take enough courses each semester that you feel the tingles of a challenge, but don't go overboard. You must feel the “tingles” so that you will be forced to find ways to adapt (i, at least, find it very diffcult to make myself get out of my comfort zone unless given no other option), but don't go to the extreme of taking on too much that you're silent screaming in panic more than you're getting things done. If you're not sure how many courses to enroll in, enroll in as many as you want, and if you find it too much, you can drop as many as you need to by the appropriate deadlines. Also, you may feel resistance to “lowering your standards” as you switch up your study methods to account for the much greater amount of material you need to cover, especially if you're an HSP who struggles with perfectionism, but just stick with it for a little while. You're so much more than a number or letter or percentage mark on an assignment or test, and you may find you're still able to consistently achieve all that you had wanted to in the academic realm. Perhaps you'll even find you're able to complete your work with greater calm and ease if you stick with it long enough. i say this as an hsp who still gets stressed by school but now has enough confidence to more easily calm myself down because i know i can still make it with imperfect study methods and because of that, i can do things with greater ease and apparently get on the dean's list not once but freakin’ twice during my degree?!?!?! i just got the email this week! and whaaaaaaa
If you followed tip #1, try slowly increasing the number of courses you take per semester. You're capable of more than you think. Life will throw you so many more curveballs and responsibilities as you get on, and the overwhelm may be demoralizing but you were meant to live. So, the earlier you train yourself to stop freaking out about each addition to your plate*, the easier it will be and the more confident in yourself you'll feel. In first year, I was overwhelmed with 3 courses per semester, and so in second year, I dropped to 2 and found it to be too little. In third year, I did 3 per semester and found it to be just right. Now, I'm doing 4 per semester and it's like first year all over again except I'm handling a fuller plate. And experimenting with taking 4 courses per semester and finding it's not the death sentence I thought it would be is giving me the confidence I need to take 5 courses per semester next year, my final year. ☺️ Ideally, I would've stuck with 3 in my second year and started on 4 in my third year, so I could even graduate sooner, but still, that's growth right there! And if some rando on the internet can do it, you can too! (* okay, you might not stop freaking out but you will be able to calm yourself down faster the more you practice, which is such a big ace for anyone, hsp or not!)
Please don't feel pressured to do all the social things immediately like joining all the clubs and societies and and high-energy social gatherings/parties. Please also don't feel guilty or blame yourself for not engaging in any or all of these, especially if you feel like you aren't living the “uni life” you want. You'll be here for what, 2, 3, or more years? That's a ton of time! Gradually add the extracurriculars as you feel ready (as in your academic life doesn't feel like a game of hot potato) and only as you feel so called to it that you're sure you're gonna regret it someday if you don't take the chance.
On a related note, don't feel like you have to do everything all at once. Some people take the maximum course load and somehow excel in a bunch of extracurricular activities at the same time while functioning on 5-7 hours of sleep. If that's not you, don't sweat it. Maybe you can adjust your schedule so that in one semester you focus more on academics and in the next, you focus more on the extracurriculars you need to feed your soul and boost your resumé.
SELF-CARE IS SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN (some) PEOPLE GIVE IT CREDIT FOR — DON'T YOU DARE DROP SELF-CARE IN FAVOR OF “PRODUCTIVITY.” (tbh i still struggle with this, BUT!) Ignore all the people who brag about how little sleep they got the night before the exam. Ignore all the people who brag about not having time to take care of their health in favor of completing another assignment or participating in some coveted extracurricular. Make an exercise plan for the kind of workout that rejuvenates you and follow through on it (except when too ill and tired...you'll know when you need to take a rest day, so listen to your body), whether it's yoga, dance, HIIT, slow pilates, weights, or whatever! And sleep a tonnnn. Sleep earlier than you feel you "should" (given that uni students seem to love to keep odd hours...and that habit may rub off on you as it did on me). Give yourself at least an hour to wind down from all the stimulants of the day (tbh sometimes i need 2 or more hours to finally feel relaxed enough after a long day)... don't subject yourself to the stimulant of your phone (if you happen to see this during your wind-down time, take this as your signal to GET THE FRICK OFF THE PHONE 😂). Take naps or just lie down and relax in bed as needed, especially if you feel you're fighting the flu or covid or whatnot. Take the time to have a nice, hot (or cold, depending on your personal preference 😅) shower or a simple, relaxing bath. Meditate when you need some quiet time, maybe try it in the dark if you feel you just really need to soothe your senses. Journal. Every. Day. At least for me, even if I feel my thoughts are mundane, somehow it helps keep me sane, especially when I have no one to talk to because everyone else around me is busy... (If even for one week I neglect basic self-care, I feel physically terrible which makes me feel mentally terrible and then I'm of no use to myself or anyone else! It isn't selfish or narcissistic and it definitely doesn't have to be expensive. Self-care really works wonders for stress levels and sustainable functioning, sometimes in really subtle ways.)
part 2: (did not know about tumblr's character limit for a single block. that's the only reason this second part exists otherwise it would all be in the same list lol)
When on the verge of panic-crying in defeat but you still need to push through or miss important deadlines, try studying to calming music/ambiences that are still stimulating enough to occupy the frazzled part of your brain that keeps you from functioning 😅 I suppose it's like a lullaby except for studying... 😅 One that worked for me last night was this one and a favorite since my high school days was this one. (What Elaine Aron said about water being really calming seems to be true for some reason and I have no idea why it works so well but it does so I'm rollin’ with it.)
Find small, low-effort creative outlets to release the restless energy that comes from creative needs neglected. Especially useful if you feel stuck in “left-brain” activities for most of the day and don't have much energy for your preferred creative outlets that ask more of you (also yes ik the whole left brain/right brain thing is a myth but idk how to concisely describe the bodily feeling bc it does feels like different parts of my brain are used for logical vs creative activities lol). I like to make wallpapers on Canva using the too many pics I download from the internet (istg I've probably changed my wallpaper at least once for every week since the start of term lol) and I guess I also make ugly comics when the mood strikes 😂
Take frequent, extended breaks from social media. This probably doesn't apply to only HSPs but I find that on the days I scroll a lot, create content for, or consume a lot of social media content in addition to all the things that go on in my real world, I get extra frazzled and tired. I think because of the depth of processing that comes with being HSP, we need to be extra mindful of where we put our energy and attention. Some of the mental health benefits I wasn't sure were true for me before I did a social media detox: at least for me, the peace and clarity of mind I get from it is unmatched! Imagine a world with less FOMO/toxic comparison, less guilt resulting from that, less of feeling like you're just very unaesthetic and dull irl, less guilt resulting from that, less time wasted, less guilt resulting from that. Less extraneous emotional clouding -> better judgment. Such a weight off just by hitting “sign out.”
Clean your workspace either before you study or after you study to have a clear mind. (Yeah, that's another a cliché but we HSPs tend to be more affected by our physical environments and we just gotta accept that and so keeping clean and, for me at least, minimalist, does wonders for my peace of mind 😊)
Don't be afraid to ask for help. You might feel like since you're a legal adult, you should be able to do everything by yourself all the time and not have to bother anyone. But the wise who have been legal adults for ages know that they can't do it all alone. So: do you need an extension on an assignment? Do you need help balancing your chores and schoolwork? Ask for help when you need it! It is not a sign of failure.
If you can, it might help to find yourself an inanimate study buddy 🧸 if you feel you need extra cozy/calming chemicals in your brain while you study 😅
Last but not least, if you have trouble regulating your emotions and fall into the pessimistic trap like I do sometimes, this may help:

guys, on the note of ‘airplanes as animals’.. what are.. the legs? the gear? I thought of organic, wheel-like organs; but then that’s weird. and anyways, how does it evolve?
but listen.. what can get an animal of that size in the air? maybe this is a different world with different gravity, atmospheric conditions? do they have just 3-4 legs? do they have a bunch of legs like catbus or an invertebrate? how big are they…? I don’t know.. i like to think small! because a 747 with big big bird legs is a scary thought to me. the aoa sensors are thick little mandibular whiskers! and.. i was thinking.. in real life, if too many birds and such go into the engine, it’s going to a’splode, duh.. (¬_¬)ノ But what would be their primary method of ingesting food.. (They’d sap renewable fuel-like substance from the ground in natural deposits, primarily)… but the ‘ingestion zone’ of an engine is so so interesting to me. I like to think they really would ingest through there also! as an inflight snack..
You’re probably thinking “Pocchi if planes were real animals they wouldn’t look like planes because this is the most inefficiently designed biological organism I’ve ever heard of.” To which I say……..ya……. ummmm…. Pelagic sky-cetaceans though…. with, like…. bioluminescence… and……… Consider: It is an Animal, to Me.

Some randoms details about Kraw’s *business side* mermaid hunting methods no one asked for.
I still don’t feel comfortable with his whole trawler design yet (I’m not a boat engineer but my busted ego berates me nonetheless for not easily designing one) but hey, this is something right?
Fathom Stars are mainly used by hunters who do light, focused catches. Mermaids of course go for more, especially depending on the contents of their stomachs or how rare they are. Only the big game for the experienced hunter.
Where Kraw is mostly the big guy who keeps the hostile merms away and discourages greedy fishermen from Marrowtide, he’s also the only mermaid hunter they have. He brings in the expensive game when he goes on runs to the rim of Hellmouth, where other fishermen tend to avoid. (I’m working on naming zones and fishermen levels, like a license distribution system for hunting or something idk)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kraw’s lucky in that he doesn’t need the typical 4 or 5 other crew members it usually takes to lift a fathom star onto a powerblock. He just carries it like a damn christmas tree.
I’ll probably post more about them later when I get the motivation. I’d like to show the more ornate ones I’ve designed as well as other less ‘unconventional’ ways they’re used. They can come in different sizes of course but where Kraw’s trawler is a bit smaller he just uses the standard.

How to Stay Motivated and Productive: Crushing Your Goals Without Burning Out
Staying motivated and productive can feel like a constant battle, especially when life throws distractions, stress, and endless to-do lists your way. But fear not! With the right mindset and strategies, you can keep your motivation high and your productivity on point, without burning out. Let’s dive into some tips to help you crush your goals and stay energized along the way.
1. Start with Your "Why"
Before you even think about getting stuff done, take a moment to connect with your “why.” Why do you want to achieve these goals? Whether it’s personal growth, career advancement, or simply getting through your day with your sanity intact, having a clear purpose fuels motivation. When the going gets tough, reminding yourself of the bigger picture can keep you pushing forward.
2. Set Clear, Realistic Goals
Productivity isn’t just about doing more; it’s about doing what matters. Break your goals down into specific, achievable tasks. Instead of vague goals like “get fit” or “study more,” try “exercise for 30 minutes three times a week” or “study for 45 minutes, then take a 15-minute break.” Clear goals give you a roadmap and make it easier to track your progress.
3. Create a Routine That Works for You
Routines are your best friend when it comes to staying productive. They help build momentum and reduce the mental energy spent on deciding what to do next. But remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all routine—what works for someone else might not work for you. Experiment with different schedules until you find one that aligns with your natural rhythms and lifestyle.
4. Embrace the Power of Small Wins
There’s nothing like the rush of ticking something off your to-do list. Those small wins build momentum and keep you motivated to tackle bigger tasks. Break larger projects into smaller, manageable steps, and celebrate each achievement along the way. It’s like giving yourself a mini high-five every time you complete something, and who doesn’t love that?
5. Use the Pomodoro Technique
If you struggle with staying focused, the Pomodoro Technique is a game-changer. Work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. After four sessions, take a longer break (15-30 minutes). This method not only helps maintain focus but also prevents burnout by ensuring you’re taking regular breaks. It’s a win-win for both your productivity and your well-being.
6. Declutter Your Space, Declutter Your Mind
A cluttered workspace can lead to a cluttered mind. Take a few minutes each day to tidy up your environment. A clean, organized space can help you feel more in control and focused on the task at hand. Plus, it’s one less thing to stress about when you’re trying to get in the zone.
7. Prioritize Self-Care
Productivity isn’t just about grinding 24/7. To stay motivated, you need to take care of yourself. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating well, and staying active. Incorporate activities that relax and recharge you—whether it’s reading, meditating, or just chilling out with a good Netflix show. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup.
8. Mix It Up
Monotony can kill motivation. If you find yourself getting bored or stuck in a rut, mix things up. Try changing your environment—work from a different room or a coffee shop. Switch up your routine or try new productivity tools and techniques. Keeping things fresh can reignite your enthusiasm and keep you engaged.
9. Stay Accountable
Share your goals with a friend, family member, or even online communities. Having someone to check in with can keep you accountable and motivated. Plus, it’s a great way to get support and encouragement when you need it most. Sometimes, just knowing someone else is rooting for you is enough to keep you going.
10. Forgive Yourself for Off Days
Let’s be real—not every day is going to be a productivity powerhouse. Some days, the motivation just isn’t there, and that’s okay. The key is not to beat yourself up over it. Instead, acknowledge it, rest, and come back stronger the next day. Progress isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being consistent over time.
11. Visualize Your Success
Take a few minutes each day to visualize what success looks like for you. Imagine how it will feel to achieve your goals, and let that positive energy drive you forward. Visualization is a powerful tool that can help keep your motivation alive, even when the journey feels long.
12. Reward Yourself
Don’t forget to reward yourself for your hard work. Whether it’s treating yourself to something special, taking a day off, or just indulging in your favorite activity, rewards help reinforce the positive behavior of staying productive. It gives you something to look forward to and makes the grind feel a little less grindy.
13. Keep Learning and Growing
Finally, keep feeding your mind with new ideas and inspiration. Read books, listen to podcasts, watch TED Talks—whatever gets your creative juices flowing. Continuous learning keeps you motivated by reminding you that there’s always more to discover and achieve.
Final Thoughts
Staying motivated and productive isn’t about working harder—it’s about working smarter. By setting clear goals, creating a routine that works for you, and prioritizing self-care, you can stay on top of your game without burning out. Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint, so pace yourself, celebrate your progress, and keep moving forward. You’ve got this!
Love,
Sophia

Fish of the Day
Happy Tuesday, everyone! Today's fish of the day is the strawberry squid!
Tumblr media
The strawberry squid, also known as the cockeyed squid, and scientific name Histioteuthis heteropsis is known for their distinctive eyes. Living in the twilight zone (mesopelagic zone) of the ocean, stretching the depths of 200 meters to 1,000 meters, these squid have a unique method for the intake of light in their native range and ability to spot prey and predators. But first, let's go over their range and habitat. The strawberry squid lives exclusively within the twilight zone from 200-1000 meters, undergoing diel vertical migration (a daily migration taking place at night where deep sea animals move upward to predate on various plankton and active nekton) when most predators in shallower waters rest. During the day these squid can be found anywhere from 500-700m, but during the night they are found from 300-400m. Range wise, they can be found in the California and the Humboldt currents, which border the Western coast of the United states, and then further South to the Equator, with the squid living out past the continental shelf.
Tumblr media
With an entire name focusing on it, the strawberry squid is best known for the unique eyes they have developed. Due to living in the mesopelagic twilight zone of the ocean, only 1% of all sunlight that is present at the water surface can be visible at even the shallowest sections of the zone. These different eyes are designed for seeing better in light/darker areas of water, with the larger eye focusing on looking upward to spot the shadows of prey cast in the water above them. The smaller eye looks downward in the water column to focus on flashes of bioluminescence that could warn of prey or predators. These eyes are the same size when young, but develop as the squid ages. The other, and more common name for the strawberry squid is focused on their general coloration, and the photophores scattered around the body, which are visually similar to strawberry seeds. Photophores can be found on many different deep sea animals, and are small light producing organs, which are only found in the Histioteuthis family of squids, which contains only the strawberry squid and a close relative. These photophores are used for counter illumination, to hide from both predators and prey.
Tumblr media
The diet of the squid is made up of shrimps, fishes, and other deep sea squid. These prey are captured by ambush, as the squid very carefully searches for them visually before sneaking closer until it is in range to lunge, wrapping its tentacles around prey and biting down with the sharp beak. They can grow up to as long as 13cm, with only about 5 inches of mantle length.  Very little is known about their reproduction or mating, but squids in the Histioteuthidae family lack a specialized mating tentacle, and rather rely on small packets of sperm masses it can send out, which will then find the female squid and meet eggs held within the single ovary. Other than this, the lifecycle of this squid is entirely unknown, leaving many things about them a mystery for now.
Tumblr media
That's the strawberry squid! Have a wonderful Tuesday, everyone!

How do the rings of hell work? Are they kinda stacked like Wrath is above Sloth but below Gluttony? Is it all one large on going terrain with different sections labeled as rings?
How does hell Hell
[Some of this was already touched on before.]
So you have the planet Earth, correct? There are three annexes orbiting Earth.
Eden (Heaven);
Perdition (Hell);
Limbo (Soul recycling/cleansing annex)
Perdition, unlike the other two, is fragmented.
What does this mean?
When Hell was first created, it was a large, cohesive annex just like Eden. There was no separation between demon types (as the types themselves weren't fully cemented by then), and there was no concept of Rings. There was an entity that ruled this illegal annex, a siadar Creator who is commonly referred to as "The Betrayer". As the creator of this annex, he was largely responsible for maintaining its cohesiveness, which isn't an easy task to do when the whole environment was created in a fit of spite. Hell had always been unstable in its very foundation, the Betrayer was just powerful enough to keep it together.
Now, in creating this annex, The Betrayer would send demons to negatively alter and raze destruction upon Earth as well as all lessers. Naturally, this buys him a proper war with the forces of Eden, including other siadar authorities.
When The Betrayer was defeated, it is said that his ashes bathed the grounds of Hell. This has led some older demons to believe that the god's anger had made the very ground shatter into several deep rifts that then formed "the Rings", but a more realistic interpretation is based on two factors:
There was no core entity to hold the unstable annex together;
The Fragmentation Wars did not help.
Fragmentation Wars were a series of bloody, brutal conflicts between groups of demons, who each defended a champion that they believed should rule Perdition in the absence of The Betrayer. Each faction had its own territory that they shaped to their own preferences, and their separation formed differing "societies" that then became specialized, allowing the modern types of sin to form. These wars actively damaged the annex's structure along time, which, paired with its own instability, caused the very foundation of it to ripple and shatter over time, creating several ring-like structures that each demonic faction quickly started fighting over.
The Rings are pretty much all of the same size, save for the "Common Ring" (formerly "Common Rings"), which is an amalgamation of residue from the seven other Rings, and is therefore quite small in comparison.
They are stacked, vaguely beneath the Earth, but the current order of Rings is not the same one as centuries ago, since the annex continues to be unstable and its elements fluctuate with time. It's not a perfect sort of spiral down either, as they'll often drift in various directions, a push and pull that effectively creates their own version of "seasons" and alters time zones.
Since transportation between these Rings is near physically impossible without magical aid, demons have developed and specialized in rift creation to generate a messy albeit functional method of locomotion. Some demons are talented enough to find potential spots for rift creation (usually places loaded with a surplus of volatile magic), and easily develop them in a variety of locations- This is the case with Ludwig, a rather mysteriously capable figure.

View House - Part 2, Interior & Furnishings
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For this build's interior, I really wanted to step outside of my comfort zone and play around. In my mind, this build is home to an eccentric family that loves art, shapes, and color. I usually try to make my builds as high brow as possible (lmao), but I wanted to deconstruct that just a little here. It was sometimes difficult balancing all this color, but so rewarding in the end. Now let's get to stats. This house contains four full bedrooms. Two of which are for adults, while one is decorated for a toddler, and the other a child. All have bathrooms. There's also a home office, reading room, gym, laundry room, security office, and a full sized basketball court in the basement.. because why not. Outside, there's a large outdoor kitchen and bar, with a firepit, pool and lots of seating to maximize views.
As for these screenshots, I have to give @pixelplayground a big shoutout for introducing me to ray tracing, a graphic method which creates more realistic shadows and lighting. Read more about that here. Find this lot on the gallery by searching my EA id 'comfysims4' or by searching 'View House'. Please remember to search including custom content. I am not currently making cc lists or tray files, but check out my frequently used creators post and hmu me for WCIFS.

Why I hate the pomodoro method.
You’ve probably seen someone suggest the Pomodoro method before— you do short sprints (typically 25 mins) followed up by a quick break (typically 5 mins).
I don’t like it, and I will never go back to using it. Don’t get me wrong, it can work really well! My sibling only gets anything done if they use this method, so there is something good about it. However, I’m going to talk about the downsides and what else to do instead of this method.
1. It focuses on time spent rather than results.
Many tasks are quite flexible in how long we take to complete them. Take walking home for example. When I am in a rush to school, it takes about 20 mins uphill, but my legs cramp really bad. When I’m just listening to my music and vibing, it takes about 30 mins downhill.
It's a similar idea for studying. Apply pressure on your learning and assignments, and they get completed faster. Too much pressure, you get exhausted or can’t think straight. (HINT: Procrastination). Too little pressure, and it takes forever to get anything done.
Different results require different amounts of time and pressure.
Trying to strive for a specific time frame undermines what your true goal is: to get some something done. The repetitive cycle assumes a “one size fits all” but that is rarely ever the case. Saying “I studied for two hours today” means nothing compared to “I wrote my essay, read a research paper, and annotated my notes from yesterday.”
2. It discourages focus and flow.
When I was trying out the method, I kept trying to find the ideal time for work and for breaks. The problem is it's never the same. Some days, you are more mentally exhausted and need longer and more breaks, otherwise you are just going to be miserable.
As it is, the five-minute break isn’t long enough to go on a short walk, take a dedicated snack, or fully disconnect. It’s a waste of time that taunts you with distractions that aren’t conducive to a good work environment.
The opposite is also true. Good days can be rare, so when you get into the zone, there’s no reason to come out of it for anything other than a natural transition. A ticking timer to your productivity doesn’t help, and breaking up that “flow state” isn’t maximizing your time or your efforts.
I also haven’t heard many people mention stamina. If you are in school and taking tests, you realize they are typically around the same length (90 - 120 mins where I am). The pomodoro method contradicts this. For a lot of people, focusing and doing your best on a test for such a long period of time can be difficult.
Oh, but that’s just life.
Maybe a part of it is, but you can take steps to improve your stamina during test taking. Spending upwards of two hours studying or taking practice tests, especially leading up to huge exams, can make the test fly by. Simulating test conditions is also a great way to study or increase pressure, which is what long term study periods achieve. Taking longer study periods also relates back to breaks. With the same amount of break time, you consolidate it into a greater block. You can grab a snack, watch an episode of your favorite show, take a walk outside, or do your hair. All fun stuff you can’t do with pomodoro.
3. It brings technology back into the equation.
If you’re using pomodoro method, most likely, its on your computer or your phone. Which means you have to have a device in reach and visible (for work on paper) or be constantly switching tabs (for work online).
Distractions are a huge part of this modern age, which means that you could inadvertently be teasing your mind with a computer game or social media or whatever you enjoy. Even if you don’t give in, you *are* losing focus.
Forget the clocks, forget the devices, forget the notifications. It’s so much easier to be productive if you have nothing else to do and no distractions to take you away from something that, at the heart of it, you enjoy. Because if you hate studying, why are you still reading this??????
This is really long so I’ll make another post about different study methods next week.

DAY 5877
Jalsa, Mumbai Mar 21, 2024 Thu 10:09 PM
Reliving the love of the well wishers of Sunday at the GOJ .. an unending expression of affection and unstinted nearness ..
How can one ever be distant from this ..
So the imagery that was going to be posted has caused a revolt in the tumble Tumblr and feels through a very considerate message that the picture files are too large to be posted here ..
An effort shall be made to reduce the size and reprint at a later stage ..
There was method that was prescribed on how to do it , but since the still/video team has changed , the directions on the size has been a hindrance ..
Hopefully shall sort this out ..
Sometimes the validation process takes time with each possible change of gear ..
""Change of gear" embodies the essence of life's evolution. It symbolizes the dynamic flux inherent in existence, where transitions mark growth and adaptation. Philosophically, it reflects the pivotal moments when we shift perspectives, beliefs, or priorities, catalyzing personal development. These shifts propel us forward, transcending comfort zones, and embracing uncertainty. Like gears in a machine, each change interlocks with the next, propelling the journey of self-discovery. Embracing change of gear fosters resilience, agility, and a deeper understanding of our inner workings. It reminds us that stagnation is antithetical to growth, urging us to engage courageously with the ever-turning wheel of transformation."
Read and reading some of the more blank verses of Babuji .. so concise, soft and tender, limited in words but expressive in volumes .. the hesitation to express them here .. will they feel the depth of the emotion of Babuji .. will they be able to hear the sound of his soul .. will they be in consonance with the thought of his thought ..
And I wonder ..
And the time passes by .. as does thoughts and temperament of the deserving ..
Love ❤️

Quick warning: there are images of arachnids towards the end of this post.
Something about Subnautica’s biology has me really really normal about it as of late. In anticipation for the release of Subnautica 2 I’ve decided I’ll dedicate a portion of my time every day to studying the physical anatomy of Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero’s more interesting fauna because they’re interesting and weird!!!!!! Love them.
Tumblr media
My opening thoughts are the Chelicerate. It’s classified as a Leviathan-Class creature in Sector Zero of 4546B. There are two types of Chelicerate. The main one you meet is the red one pictured above. Though, if you go beyond the natural limits of the map, you will encounter the Void Chelicerate at the edge of the sector.
Tumblr media
General assumption and geographical analysis leads one to the conclusion that Sector Zero of 4546B and the main zone we play in in the original Subnautica game are separated by a large expanse of ecologically dead waters. The only two creatures we know to be capable of surviving in these waters are Void Chelicerates and adult Ghost Leviathans, a species from the prior game that I’ll discuss at a later date.
Now, the Chelicerate is a large predator, albeit on the smaller scale for Leviathan-Class fauna, that uses its four mandibles to trap prey and keep it from escaping. The game’s official databank entry states the following:
“ These large mandibles of the chelicerate are composed of a bony material that crushes and saws through bones and muscle with ease. The mandibles open up while the backward facing teeth dig into flesh and prevent easy escape. The prey is pulled towards the chelicerate's mouth and devoured.”
As we can see, the chelicerate hunts aggressively with a “trap and catch” method of hunting we see in real-world marine fauna like the monkfish, which uses it’s mouth to trap and hold prey. This hunting method is brutally effective when scaled up to a creature the size of a chelicerate, especially considering their lightweight, maneuverable build. This also allows the chelicerate to grasp objects, like Robin’s submersible vehicles, and damage them.
Rather uniquely on 4546B, the chelicerate sports a segmented exoskeleten with flexible plates that allow it to maneuver and move with agility through the water while also protecting it from the pressure of 4546B’s gravity. Very cool!
> “The chelicerate’s body is made of a thick segmented exoskeleton. The exoskeleton grows in flexible overlapping plates. This provides protection from the atmospheric pressure while giving the chelicerate the maneuverability to easily pursue prey.”
I think the thing I liked most about the chelicerate when viewing its in-game model and animations was that it moved like a whale, with horizontal tail fins that pushed it through the water with an up and down movement of its tail rather than a side-to-side movement we’d see in modern fish and shark species. This really feels right for them especially considering the way the plates of the exoskeleton overlap and lay on each other which would (reasonable assumption) make much side-to-side movement restricted and awkward to pull off.
Subnautica is infamously good at drawing inspiration from real-world animals and applying design aspects of those animals to these alien creatures in a way that feels familiar but unique and fascinating in its’ own way. The chelicerate is no exception. Named after the subphylum “chelicerata” they, fittingly, resemble species under the chelicerata subphylum like horseshoe crabs or eurypterid. Their four-pronged mandible-jaws remind me of the camel spider, as well. See here:
Tumblr media
As we can see the solifugae also have these four, claw-like mandible structures. Fascinating!
The chelicerate seems like a fusion between the eurypterid and camel spider if it was dunked underwater for a few million years and turned big and red. I really love this creature and I think about it often.
This was my attempt at wordvomit analysis of the chelicerate… yay.

Is there something about viper that we don't know
Ooh I've been waiting for an ask like this so I could use this format! Beyond the rose divider is more of the nsfw/yandere traits, so be forewarned!
New here and want to see Viper's fic? Click here!
Tumblr media
Viper: the Yandere deep sea mermaid
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
File #25
Name: Viper
Age: 29
Species: deep sea mermaid (viperfish)
Prominent appearance: ghost like eyes, jaws that unhinges, an antenna, long, tall, and big body
Prominent personalities: touch starved, socially deprived, predatorial instinct, sadistic (fear inducer), entitled
Current Residence: deep trenches of the Pacific Ocean
Something notable: deep scar running down his back due to poor feedback from the old residences of the trenches; tried to kill him.
Tumblr media
Yandere type: predatorial type; predator and prey
Willing to hurt darling: Yes
If willing- reasoning: if darling continues to try to escape over and over again, he will not hesitate to break their tail. If darling continues to seek the light, their eyes will be plucked out and eaten by Viper. Viper will degrade darling, manipulate them into thinking they only need Viper, and that the other upper dwellers were right in abandoning darling.
Willing to break darling: yes (if push comes to shove)
Willing to kill darling: no
Willing to hurt people: yes
Willing to kill people: yes
Weapon of choice: teeth, claws
Method of killing: devouring, mauling
Kinks/fetishes: size difference, predator and prey, fear play, breeding, blood (if discovered), biting, marking, mind break, rough housing, submission, brat taming
Position: Rough dominant top
Libido: high, pent up
Tumblr media
Additional notes:
-Viper only knew of the dark. Abandoned at the deep trenches in an early age, he's touch starved and socially deprived. Due to his scary appearance and stereotypes, mermaids and mermen were quick to fault him.
-Will get hurt if he quickly swims upwards due to the sudden change in pressure. The light makes him uncomfortable, as it's outside his comfort zone.
-His black pearl, which is an engagement/wedding ring equivalent, was from a merman who accidentally dropped it, and never got the courage to find it. Viper found it and decided to keep it to himself just in case.
-Viper learned/got educated from listening on classes when civilization was still at the trenches up above his cavern.
-Viper's love stems more on hunger and desire, a want to keep darling for himself like a pet. An urge to completely overwhelm them with his presence. Is it actually love? Unfortunately, yes.

Day 9 of OCtober by @bweirdart!
Prompt: Relationships
Ship chart for Splarnya and Gale :-) template taken from here
in depth explanations under the cut!
Extrovert/Introvert: I don't see Gale as an extreme introvert--he loves to talk with the friends he makes and enjoys social events as well as spending time alone or staying indoors. While his ideal night is probably the latter, he doesn't entirely despise being around others. Neither does Splarnya, but growing up as an only child and traveling alone has tempered her into someone who is very comfortable being by herself/in her own comfort zone.
Big Spoon/Little Spoon: They switch but because of their body sizes it usually ends up with Gale as the big spoon and Splarnya as the little spoon :)
PDA/No PDA: Gale is typically the first to initiate PDA, mostly since Splarnya's the more reserved one of the two. This is not to say she doesn't welcome it, she very much enjoys giving and receiving PDA <3
Pet Names/No Pet Names: Gale also uses pet names just a bit more than Splarnya, with his default being "my love." Splarnya also uses "my love" with Gale, but also says "Gale, sweetie..." when trying to coax him.
Independent/Separation Anxiety: Years of bullying and travelling alone has made Splarnya competently independent and fine on her own while Gale would frankly die after a day without her.
Love at First Sight/Slowburn: Gale falls first 🤭 He is very touched by Splarnya's compassion and generosity in regards to his condition, with her offering magical artifacts before even knowing why he needs them. As a wizard, he found an interest in Splarnya's sorcery background and one night asked to sit down with her to learn more. Eventually, the converstations became a regular thing and branched out to a variety of topics beyond magic. What sends him over the edge is the Weave sharing scene, in which Splarnya (accidentally and much to her embarrassment) pictures them together and opens his mind to a path he wasn't sure was possible for him. Despite her initial suspicions of him due to his secrecy, Splarnya falls pretty early on as well. She was friendly with him before, but the moment that changed was after she was poisoned by Nettie. Seeing that Gale genuinely cared for her wellbeing despite barely knowing her was what made her start to fall for him.
Affection via Actions/Words: Gale is pretty equal when it comes to actions and words being used to show affection, and Splarnya tends to gravitate towards actions as affection (she's more of an actions speak louder than words person).
Has Relationship Experience/No Relationship Experience: Splarnya has very little relationship experience, and Gale. Well. Yeah.
Practically an Open Book/Secretive: Splarnya's expressions are more on the subtle side and she tends to keep things close to her chest. Gale is much easier to read expression wise, and has less of a poker face than Splarnya.
Deals with Bugs/Cries About Them: Growing up on the road, Splarnya isn't particularly bothered by (regular) sized bugs. I also don't see Gale being extremely bothered by bugs, and in fact being curious about them.
Designated Driver/Can't Drive: In a setting with cars, both would be able to drive but Gale prefers letting Splarnya have the chance to relax in a car ride and not worry about driving.
Lends Clothes/Borrows Clothes: Splarnya is a chronic clothes borrower and Gale is happy to indulge her <3
At-Home Chef/Orders Takeout: Gale cooks most of the meals for the two of them, although there are days where Splarnya does insist on her taking over or getting food to take home when he is too busy to. Gale will insist he's fine and can handle the responsibility, but Splarnya always wins in the end :)
Tidy Homemaker/Chaotic Disorder: Splarnya and Gale are more on the tidy and neat side, but Gale's library and personal desk can get rather messy especially during long nights poring over tomes/scrolls/texts/etc. He has a method to the madness, however, and has a system only he really understands.
Practical Penny-Pincher/Impulsive Spendthrift: Splarnya grew up rather frugally, and during her independent travels tried to only spend money on essentials. It's quite a shift when she goes out with Gale who wants to indulge the both of them on every shopping trip.
Cuddles in Bed/Sleeps Distantly: If they're not cuddling together something has gone terribly wrong.
Problem Solver/Maker: They switch between problem solver and problem maker. SO often. Between Splarnya's wild magic causing random side effects and Gale's morbid curiosity, the two of them are always getting into some sort of trouble with one being the problem maker and the other being the problem maker.
Different Tastes + Styles/Likes to Match: Splarnya and Gale have pretty similar tastes in fashion, although Gale will go out of his way to see what Splarnya is wearing ahead of time and try to match with her <3

You're watermark is annoying all over the place can't you make it smaller and keep it in one spot? Thanx
Hi, Anon! Yeeeeah, I get that.
The size, for me, depends on how well I can place it or blend it into the background. Up until the first few episodes of season three I wasn't even using one. Learning how to gif was {is} a very slow process for me. I have made a change however, starting with the season 5 gifs, cause I was kinda not feeling the different sizes either. I played around with it so much I've picked one I like, so I hope that will fix that for you. {Sorry it took so many gifs to choose one}
Where I put it though, yeah no, that's not gonna get any better, sorry! I like finding places to put it. It's part of my process, call it OCD {maybe}, if you will. I have a lot of anxiety and putting it in my most perfect place really makes me feel better, calmer, when I'm zoned out from life. The methodical process. Editing every single gif. Giffing the whole scene. Placing every single marker.
Sorry they bug you anon, I get it.
Thank you for the ask! <33333
