!! GIVEAWAY ALERT !! We’re giving away advanced copies of two exciting summer reads: BAD MAN by Dathan Auerbach and THIS BODY’S NOT BIG ENOUGH FOR BOTH OF US by Edgar Cantero.
ABOUT THE BOOKS:
BAD MAN: Reddit horror sensation Dathan Auerbach (author of PENPAL) delivers a devilishly dark novel about a young boy who goes missing, and the brother who won’t stop looking for him. Eric disappeared when he was three years old. Ben looked away for only a second at the grocery store, but that was all it took. His brother was gone. Vanished right into the sticky air of the Florida Panhandle. He still looks for his brother. Still searches, while his stepmother sits and waits and whispers for Eric, refusing to leave the house that Ben’s father can no longer afford. Now twenty and desperate for work, Ben takes a night stock job at the only place that will have him: the store that blinked Eric out of existence. Ben can feel that there’s something wrong there. With the people. With his boss. With the graffitied baler that shudders and moans and beckons. There’s something wrong with the air itself. He knows he’s in the right place now. That the store has much to tell him. So he keeps searching. Keeps looking for his baby brother, while missing the most important message of all. That he should have stopped looking.
THIS BODY’S NOT BIG ENOUGH FOR BOTH OF US: From the New York Times bestselling author of Meddling Kids comes a mind-blowing, gender-bending, genre-smashing romp through the entire pantheon of action and noir. It is also a bold, tautly crafted novel about family, being weird, and claiming your place in your own crazy story. In a dingy office in Fisherman’s Wharf, the glass panel in the door bears the names of A. Kimrean and Z. Kimrean. Private Eyes. Behind the door there is only one desk, one chair, one scrawny androgynous P.I. in a tank top and skimpy waistcoat. A.Z., as they are collectively known, are twin brother and sister. He’s pure misanthropic logic, she’s wild hedonistic creativity. The Kimreans have been locked in mortal battle since they were in utero…which is tricky because they, very literally, share one single body. That’s right. One body, two pilots. The mystery and absurdity of how Kimrean functions, and how they subvert every plotline, twist, explosion, and gunshot–and confuse every cop, neckless thug, cartel boss, ninja, and femme fatale–in the book is pure Cantero magic.
HOW TO WIN: Reblog this post by MONDAY, APRIL 30TH at 11:59 PM. We will pick 1 winner at random to receive:
-1 advanced copy of BAD MAN
-1 advanced copy of THIS BODY’S NOT BIG ENOUGH FOR BOTH OF US

Good luck!

Finally read that fantasy novel that it felt like everyone told me to read. To me this book barely felt like fantasy in some ways, which actually ended up being part of the charm.

My review of Magi seasons 1 and 2!
I feel like this anime kind of had a guilty pleasure quality to it. Like, the characters and overall narrative didn't rock my world, but I liked them well enough and I got quite addicted anyway. It was probably the slick animation and crazy genie armour honestly.

Did a review of what turned out to be a really great hidden gem. If you're looking for a really cool cyberpunk setting that comments on things like targeted advertising and a debt-based economy through the lens of non-white/lgbt characters then look no further! ...Or if you just like a really well-paced YA thriller.

First blog post in a while. Just wrote up some thoughts on the Bourne trilogy after rewatching it in advance of the latest film (though I haven't seen the latest yet). Slightly different format than usual, more of a bulleted large overview. Maybe something will interest a few of you.

My review of Jon Favreau’s take on The Jungle Book. Here’s a brief excerpt:  “[Favreau] pulls it off with aplomb here and creates a film where it seems like everyone involved in its production gave 110% in order to have this familiar story and these emotional elements not seem stale or trite. Their effort is rewarded with a tale of how finding oneself is not the same as finding others like you, where tried and true ideas don’t feel like tired cliche’. In the rugged and untamed jungle, they simply feel pure.”

My review of Aziz Ansari’s Master of None. Here’s an excerpt:
"Master of None isn’t bogged down by the shortcomings of serialization, yet it simultaneously has its own undeniable variety from episode to episode. It dares to make you laugh, to make you worry, to make you think. It challenges as much as it delights, proving itself as not just something entertaining, but something beautiful."

“sci fi and fantasy are polar opposites! they can’t coexist!!”
what is this, the genre binary?

My review of Lost Stars by Claudia Gray! Here’s an excerpt:
"We follow childhood friends Ciena Ree and Thane Kyrell ... Through their eyes the reader not only sees the tribulations of falling in love when divided by social class and culture, but also the complexities of joining each side in one of cinemas most prolific guerrilla wars. This is where the novel shines brightest, by answering questions that the original trilogy does not have time to answer: why would anyone join in the evils of the empire? What did they offer to struggling people and worlds? Even if the rebellion succeeds, will the new government be any better?"

Excerpt:  Dark Disciple stars former Sith apprentice Asajj Ventress and the easygoing fan favourite Jedi Quinlan Vos as they engage in an attempt to once and for all end the clone wars by assassinating the highly plot-armoured Count Dooku... Star Wars has always had a problem proving itself in the novel form, often falling into the traps of “franchise fiction.” The same pitfalls can be found here: sparse and bland prose, and moments where known characters act outside their personalities being the chief offenders. Despite those faults, the pacing of the novel is well-done and the character development is on point. Perhaps inevitably, it’s just a shame that it did not receive the precise execution of a Clone Wars episode.
