A friend of mine from around here who is Very Christian and has never had a Jewish friend before was asking me some stuff about antisemitism today, and it made me realize that the ways people talk about various types of bigotry and racism are so designed to stump people about the nature and purpose of systems of oppression. "Why do people hate the jews so much?" is such a common refrain and while there have been many books and articles written pulling apart all the important contextual and historical things that can help people understand antisemitism SPECIFICALLY, what I ended up saying to my friend was this:
"Something to understand about antisemitism is it isnt just ideological. The expulsion of jews from various countries was very often a method of "legally" seizing their wealth when the church needed money. It has been historically an incredibly convenient source of both a group of people to blame and also an easy way to just... Be able to steal from people, lmao. It has served very concrete material purposes for churches and governments throughout history. Sometimes you have to approach asking those questions from a different angle because it often isnt about the hatred so much as it is about ... Redirecting energy and attention, right, like upholding structures that benefit those in power. The hatred is convenient because it allows those in power to take actions that would not be tolerated if the group in question were not considered to be Exceptional in their inhumanity. Like the undocumented immigrants now, asking "why do they hate the immigrants so much" isnt always a productive avenue of thought because the hatred is usually just... Useful. Rather it is more helpful to ask "Who does it benefit for these people to be treated this way" -> "what do they need to make the general public believe about that group of people in order to justify this treatment". I think sometimes we are made to think hatred of jews is special and rooted in something different than other hatred... It's not. I mean all types of racism etc are unique. But it very much is about justifying actions that benefit a ruling class in all instances, imo."
And she like totally got it!!! She was like "OH I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT IT LIKE THAT BUT THAT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE THANK YOU" I am very proud of myself lol :')

AITA for getting upset when my mom insists on clipping my nails?
I (adult male) still live with my mother because of finances/personal situations that make me unable to earn my own living. For the most part, this is fine. However, there's one thing that bugs me: she insists on trimming my nails for me.
I know it sounds weird, and it is. She's been trimming my nails since I was little, and I've always hated it. But now I'm an adult, and I don't need her to trim my nails for me, but every two weeks or so, she insists on doing it anyway. I'll admit that I have coordination issues that make things like that difficult for me to accomplish on my own, and hygiene isn't my strong suit either. But I don't need (or want) her to keep trimming my nails for me. How do I tell her to stop?
I've tried to explain it to her, but it's like I'm speaking another language or something. I've tried more direct methods, like pulling my hand away when she tries to bring out the clippers, but then she just says I'm being childish and it'll be over faster if I just let her do it, and that her dogs (she has two, they both hate me) are more well-behaved than I am. And then she trims my nails anyway, no matter how many times I tell her I hate it!
So yesterday, I finally got fed up. And right as she grabbed my hand and tried to come in with the clippers, I pulled my hand away and jabbed her with my quills! And then I curled up in a ball, so she couldn't get to my paws at all. She tried to reach for my paws, but I just poked her again.
My mom got annoyed, and said we'll have to try again tomorrow since clearly I'm in a bad mood. She seemed upset, and I feel a little bad for poking her so much since usually we have a good relationship. So tumblr, am I the asshole?
Pic of me so you can see that I'm a grown man that doesn't need his nails trimmed!

"I recognize they're doing/have done harm but you must understand where they're coming from" is my stance on a lot of things. Like 9/11. Or Somali pirates.
It's useless to insist all people in the world should "know better" than to individually choose to do harm without understanding the environment they came from.

[ image description: a drawing of two pink pigs wearing Black Template shoulder plates. The bigger pig has a scar over his blind left eye. The smaller pig has a brown bowl cut and smiles. The pigs have disproportionately large noses that blend into their bodies. ]
The reason I 'like' the Black Templars chapter are mainly
a) I have a huge corruption kink
b) I could piss so many dudes on twitter off with my fan art
c) as someone living in Germany, 60% percent of their names are just funny. Either it is 'trying way too hard to be cool', or 'just your neighbour who talks about his prostate issues too much'

i say this in all seriousness, a great way to resist the broad cultural shift of devaluing curiosity and critical thinking is to play my favorite game, Hey What Is That Thing
you play it while walking around with friends and if you see something and don't know what it is or wonder why its there, you stop and point and say Hey What Is That Thing. and everyone speculates about it. googling it is allowed but preferably after spending several minutes guessing or asking a passerby about it
weird structures, ambiguous signs, unfamiliar car modifications, anything that you can't immediately understand its function. eight times out of ten, someone in the group actually knows, and now you know!
a few examples from me and my friends the past few weeks: "why is there a piece of plywood sticking out of that pond in a way that looks intentional?" (its a ramp so squirrels that fall in to the pond can climb out) • "my boss keeps insisting i take a vacation of nine days or more, thats so specific" (you work at a bank, banks make employees take vacation in long chunks so if youre stealing or committing fraud, itll be more obvious) • "why does this brick wall have random wooden blocks in it" (theres actually several reasons why this could be but we asked and it was so you could nail stuff to the wall) • "most of these old factories we drive past have tinted windows, was that just for style?" (fun fact the factory owners realized that blue light keeps people awake, much like screen light does now, so they tinted the windows blue to keep workers alert and make them work longer hours)
been playing this game for a long time and ive learned (and taught) a fuckton about zoning laws, local history, utilities (did you know you can just go to your local water treatment plant and ask for a tour and if they have a spare intern theyll just give you a tour!!!) and a whole lot of fun trivia. and now suddenly you're paying more attention when youre walking around, thinking about the reasons behind every design choice in the place you live that used to just be background noise. and it fuckin rules.

Another example of racial bias in AI models: driving app thinks a driver is sleepy because he has squinty eyes due to having epicanthal folds.
The comments say the dataset used was Chinese but depending on whether you come from North or South your eyes can be wider or narrower.
Funny in practice though.

Mad as hell at the man who derailed a video of a woman talking about "pretty privilege" to talk about kiwi birds. Fuck off, you will never experience misogyny (she was essentially talking about misogyny) like the OP of the video does.

MPs today overwhelmingly voted to list Palestine Action as a terrorist group. 385 MPs voted for. Only 26 MPs voted against.
To be clear, Palestine Action aren't violent. They disrupt the activities of firms involved with Israel's genocide in Palestine, and they recently sprayed red paint over RAF planes used to fly spy missions in support of Israel's attacks on Gaza. That's it. But now, unless a last-ditch legal challenge on Friday succeeds, they'll be listed alongside groups like ISIS and Al Qaeda as terrorists - and even expressing support for them could land you in prison for up to 14 years.
The motion to proscribe them brought forward today by the Government also included two neo-Nazi groups, Maniacs Murder Cult and the Russian Imperial Movement - many suspect quite deliberately, to ensure that it would pass.
Legal experts, civil rights groups, even the UN have stepped up to express grave concern about the unjustified labelling of a political protest movement as ‘terrorists'. The UN said, “According to international standards, acts of protest that damage property, but are not intended to kill or injure people, should not be treated as terrorism.”
We need to keep everything crossed that Palestine Action's legal challenge is successful - but you can find ways to support them, including donating to their legal fund, here.
As ever, Cold War Steve summed the situation up brilliantly in an Instagram post:

[ image description: a black and white comic in a painterly style showing a headshot of the Iron Warrior Honsou, with both of his eyes intact, and then a back shot as he faces Castellan Vauban, a much smaller human, holding an energy sword in his right hand. The warrior smiled.
“I have no such impressive titles, human.I am called Honsou. Half-breed, mongrel, filth, scum. I will cross blades with you. ”

I feel like an outlier but Gag Order is my favorite Kesha album and I wish she would make experimental angsty music more often. Gag Order is what I wish Rainbow would be. Angry. What I've heard from Period doesn't click with me as much.
