Artists I Think Everyone Should Look At
Part 3
About damn time I did a more poc friendly version
Sir Peter Lely
England, 1618-1680
Of Dutch origin, Pieter van der Faes spent his career in England, where he succeeded Anthony van Dyke as the most fashionable portraitist in the country. Even the execution of Charles I couldn't not stop Lely's popularity, and he continued his career under the Cromwells.
With the Restoration, Lely was appointed Charles II's Principle Painter in Ordinary. His workshop was prolific, and met high demand with talent, as did his pupils. Lely is considered to first painter to have left "an enormous mass of work."

Wu Wei
China, 1459-1508
A landscaper of the Ming Dynasty, Wei was born into a family of scholar-officials. His path could've been set for a bureaucratic career, but Wei instead used his status to fund his artistic occupation.
He worked in and out of the Imperial Court for three different Emperors. Much of his career was centered in Nanjing, where he took on art students.

Robert S. Duncanson
America, 1821-1872
A second generation Hudson River School artist, Duncanson is considered the first African-American painter to be internationally known.
A free black man living in antebellum America, Duncanson was also an abolitionist and garnered the support of many abolitionist patrons.

(Left) Waterfall on Mont-Morency, 1864 | (Right) Landscape with Sheep, 19th century
Henry Ossawa Tanner
France, 1859-1937
A pioneer of black artists in the Western World, the African-American Tanner spent most of his education and career in France, eventually elected chevalier of the Legion if Honor.
Tanner's paintings often portray landscapes, biblical messages, or everyday people living everyday lives.

(Left) Sand Dunes at Sunset, Atlantic City, 1886 | (Right) The Banjo Lesson, 1893
Raja Ravi Varma
India, 1848-1906
A prime example of European influence on Indian iconography. Varma made his art available to the public via cheap lithographs, enhancing his influence. These lithographs increased the involvement of common people in the artistic world.
Many of his works are strongly influenced by Indian Epic poetry, with clear depictions or slight imitations of Hindu gods or goddesses. The royal family of Parappanad accepted him as one of their own, and two of his granddaughters were later adopted into the royal family.

From the heart of unimaginable suffering, I want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported my family 🙏🏻
Right now, famine is hitting us harder than ever, my heart cries whenever I go to the market to buy any basic necessities! The prices are crazy, and most days my children survive on just bread Hunger and thirst are destroying us, and cooking on fire increases our suffering unbearably! Severe eye and chest sensitivity, in addition to constant stomach pain due to the type of food and the way it is cooked.
All this while we flee from one place to another in fear of bombing, bullets, and imminent danger! I cannot describe what I feel, but it is a feeling beyond exhaustion!
Despite the exhaustion, your support gives us strength and I hope you will not let us down
If you can donate, please do so, or at least help us by sharing, so we can reach those who can
Your kindness truly keeps us going

Robert Burns
Some Scot wrote poetry two hundred years ago and now you have to hear about it
Frequently referred to as "Rabbie" Burns (which is the lamest thing ever if you ask moi), Burns (1759—1796) is the national poet of Scotland, and is celebrated worldwide.

Portrait of Robert Burns, 1787 — Alexander Nasmyth
Burns was born in the village of Alloway in the county of Ayrshire (pronounce it, I dare you) as the eldest of seven children to tenant farmer William Burnes and Agnes Broun. With seven kids living on a farm, the family lived in poverty, despite Burns' mother's well-keeping of their acres. This, as well as the hard labour farmlife demands, reflected poorly on Burns' health going into adulthood, and he was noted as having a weak constitution.
His early education, provided by his father, was irregular. William taught his children maths, reading, writing, history, and geography; he wrote the earliest draft of A Manual of Christian Belief by John Murdoch, who edited the thing (and corrected the strong Scottish dialect and poor grammar).
At fifteen, Burns was inspired to write poetry by a girl his age, Nelly Kilpatrick, who was noted to sing songs as she worked the fields. His first poem, "O, Once I Lov'd a Bonnie Lass" was born.
In 1775, he was sent to finish his education at Kirkoswald, where he met the engaged Peggy Thompson, to whom he wrote a few songs.

The Burns family moved from farm to farm for a while, misfortune as they were, until Robert Burns moved them to Lochlea near Tarbolton, way north of South Ayrshire. At this farm they remained until the death of William in 1784.
In 1779, Burns joined a (checks notes) country dancing school?? Which of course his father disapproved of. He later co-founded the Tarbolton Bachelors' Club with his brother Gilbert.
His earliest letters date from this time, to a servant girl whom he intended to court. Her name was probably Alison Begbie, but it might also have been Elizabeth Gebbie, we have no idea really. She eventually rejected him.
Burns went to work in a flax shop for a bit. It burnt down. He went back to Lochlea.
Returning to Lochlea, he met sea captain and soon-to-be friend Richard Brown, who encouraged him to continue poetry.

"O, Wert Thou in the Cauld Blast", 1796, Robert Burns
After William's death in 1784, the Burns's were unable to keep their home in Lochlea, and relocated yet again to a new place: Mossgiel Farm in Mauchline, East Ayrshire.
In Mauchline, Burns became acquainted with "The Belles of Mauchline", one of whom was Jean Armour, who inspired many of his poems and who bore him nine children (three of which survived into adulthood).
Facing insistent financial difficulties, Burns took on a position in Jamaica for a Patrick Douglas, a plantation owner who lived near Cumnock (that's a real place, yes). At the time, the abolitionist movement wasn't very active, and some argue that Burns later authored "The Slave's Lament", a 1792 poem arguing in favor of abolitionists, but his name fails to appear on the document.
Burns' first child, Elizabeth (b. 1785), was born via an affair with his mother's servant. A year after her birth, Jean Armour became pregnant with twins (Burns was not married to Jean until 1788, this man was a HOE).
Around this same time, Burns fell in love with a Mary Campbell, to whom he dedicated many poems. "Highland Mary" and "To Mary in Heaven" were inspired by her, and his song "Will ye go to the Indies, my Mary, And leave auld Scotia's shore?" seems to indicate that they planned to emigrate together.
The irony in taking up a position as a slave overseer in Jamaica was that he had no money to go to Jamaica. Gavin Hamilton suggested he publish his poetry to obtain some of these funds. Burns took his advice, and Scotch Poems was published, later on, Poems, Chiefly, in the Scottish dialect followed it, containing some of his best works.

Address to Edinburgh, c. 1787 — Robert Burns
In Edinburgh, Burns' influence grew massively, and he befriended a few influential persons, such as Lord Glencairn and Frances Anna Dunlop. He made quite an impression on young Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott.
In Edinburgh, he moved through several women, too.
He dropped a woman who proved difficult to seduce, instead turning his attentions to her servant, who bore him a child.
Upon returning from Edinburgh, he resumed his relationship with Jean Armour and they married in 1788.
On 1791, Burns gave up the farm and moved to Dumfries.
The Star newspaper in London offered him a position around this time, which he denied. He was also offered a position as Chair of Agrigulture for the University of Edinburgh, which be likewise refused. He did accept a membership to the Royal Company of Archers not a year later.
In Dumfries, his songwriting surged. His style mostly consisted of adapting and revising existing songs, incorporating generally more radical views and adding his own blunt writing tone.
Burns reserved himself to "Think in English, feel in Scots."
His works are largely recognizable by their sincerity, bluntness, and spontaneity. Oft he drew upon biblical or classical references, and the Scottish Makar traditions. (Makars were Scottish poets and bards, usually royal court poets)
He is thought of as a "Proto-Romantic", inspiring many writers of the Romantic movements a mere few decades later. His influence is not difficult to see in writers like William Wordsworth or Percy Bysshe Shelley.
Among Scottish communities all over the world, a "Burns Supper" or "Burns Night" is held, generally on the 25th of January, as a dinner to celebrate the life and legacy of Rabbie Burns.

My name is Abed.
I’m a survivor from Gaza, holding on to hope in a world that has fallen apart around me. 💔
The life I once knew — my home, my family, my sense of safety — has been shattered by war. Today, I live among the ruins, trying to find a path forward through the rubble and heartbreak. 🏚
Every moment is a battle against fear and uncertainty. What was once ordinary — a safe place to sleep, a future to dream of — now feels like a distant memory. 🕊️
I share my story not to seek pity, but to keep hope alive — to believe that even in the darkest places, kindness can still find a way. 🤍
If my story touches your heart, please consider sharing it or offering support. Every voice, every act of care, brings me one step closer to safety. ✨
Thank you for taking the time to listen. 🙏

I know a lot of us in America have forgotten about other worldly affairs, what with our own country going to shambles, but genocides are still happening (and have been for years/decades) in places like Palestine, Ukraine, Syria and all over the world.
Let's not forget about our brothers and sisters in Gaza

Calypso discourse pmo because why are we not using this character to talk about the devastating effects of long-term isolation??
What she did was obviously bad and Ody probably spent the rest of his life recovering, Calypso is easily a villain/antagonist
She also spent 100 years alone after (and according to some sources was cursed to fall in love with every mortal that landed on the island but fact check me on that), which has GOT to do something fucked up to someone's psyche
I don't even like Calypso that much but everything I see her compared to Antinuous my blood boils because no???? they're both bad but that's still not the same
Not a Calypso apologist btw I just sympathize, it's really no wonder she lacks emotional maturity/intelligence, she hasn't spoken to anyone in a century my goodness
When are we going to realize that Greek Mythos is not black and white 😭
#calypso#epic the musical#ogygia#calypso epic the musical#i just have opinions sometimes okay#i get so frustrated when people just say “i hate her” and then fan over someone like Antinuous#why are we not talking about her shes so interesting and complex????

Some fan art based on @widget117 or widet_is_typing’s fanfic Deinos
I always loved that meme of Cassandra of Troy’s curse that Nobody will believe her prophecies and have her meet Odysseus who will be known as Nobody. So I looked for fics where they interacted.
I really liked their first interaction in this story, I can’t wait for the reveal when Odysseus starts to believe her all of a sudden
