Not everything turns out the way we expect or anticipate. Predictions aren’t always right and sometimes, for the better. This was taken on a lovely walk on ‘a rainy day to stay inside’ according to the forecast. . Many people do the same with their outlook for the day if it’s challenging and expect or try to anticipate the worst. Just try to ensure you manage to appreciate the surprise-good days as they give you the lift you need to remember to combat the opposite. Our morning walks (something positive we build onto our covid experience) are vital each day. Both Sarah and I miss them and feel different (worse) on days that we don’t get to walk early in the morning together. It’s not always possible - life can get in the way but it is always enjoyable and beneficial when we do - and luckily, that’s most days! . Take a moment and note down the things you know you benefit from each day. The things you miss if you don��t get the chance. Commit to doing just one more of them each day until it becomes a habit. . The reverse is also true. We all do things we know are bad for us. That extra snack, missing out on a workout etc… these are the little things our internal voice says ‘I really shouldn’t…’ but we override it and do it anyway… this compounds and can lead to negative trends. . Try notting down those things you know are detrimental to your day and try to cut one out. . If you manage to promote a positive and reduce a negative, the effect over time is huge. Start small and pay attention to how you feel. You’ll be surprised and then try others. The more time we spend outside and away from our screens means we can enjoy the uplifting moments nature rewards us with… Sarah and I spend time making sure the resident local hedgehogs in our garden have adequate food and water especially while the weather is so extreme. . We regularly get the see these little monsters in the garden as a result - creating our own luck! Sometimes, being outside allows for little surprises. There have been pigeons commuting from this bush for a while now and finally, we know why. These are not the dreadful London-winged-rat type beast but a pair of friendly, beautiful feathery noise-makers that have decided to nest outside our bedroom window, with hopefully 2 chicks to come. 🪺 . It’s been just over a year since Wilder. came into being and (just as on our homepage), the fields by our home are our in bloom again. . Each morning Sarah and I walk for about 45 minutes at about 6am and it’s amazing. It wakes us both up and gets us out in the sun (and often freezing rain too)! If for whatever reason, one or both of us can’t make it, we certainly notice the effect on the day. The walking itself is uplifting, it’s quiet and gives us a chance to reflect on yesterday, what’s to come and get some life admin done as well as simply being together, uninterrupted on a daily basis. . This morning’s light was particularly beautiful. I have been spending a lot of time working on a bathroom last week (and ongoing). Practical, manual work has always been something I am capable at and it’s somewhere that having a pencil and notepad handy is always a bonus. I have a habit of rushing though so taking time to list and think things through is necessary for me! . From working out tiling space, planning plumbing, checking calculations etc and the ever growing list of things to check and finish. For me, the most important was a ‘pipe-map’ so I know where to (and NOT to) drill when attaching a few things to the floor… . “There is no such thing as bad weather. Just poor clothing!” . This is my wife, Sarah, and me at the top of a climb from a recent bike ride. We were expecting some adverse weather conditions but nothing like what we actually rode through. . Admittedly, we’re on e-bikes (and no, it isn’t cheating) but the deluge that greeted us 1/3 of the way round a 30km loop was aggressive, cold and windy to boot! . However, we kept our heads down and pedalled hard to stay warm (turning the assistance down a bit). The rest of the ride was less than ideal but the feeling once home and dry was so much greater than it would have been, had the rain stayed away for the whole ride. . Adversity makes the reward much greater. It doesn’t always feel that way though - when you feel stuck in a tough situation with no obvious solution other than to keep going. . Looking back, it was one of the best rides we have been on but when it was in progress, let’s just say we had a few ‘quiet miles’ together. This is why I use a journal. Really missing the sunrises on our early morning walks at the moment. This is one completely unedited from a little while back. . The dreary misty wet British weather has meant these sights are uncommon just now. It was while in the wilds of Scotland that Sarah and I started thinking about setting up a notebook brand. We were travelling in the narrow window between lockdowns in a camper-van around the North Coast 500 with a few detours along the way. . This shot is from Skye - not technically on the ‘official’ route but definitely worth the detour. It involved standing in the freezing water for about 30 minutes to get it right. . While driving around, we found ourselves less and less interested in our phones, blogs and the usual distractions and increasingly mesmerised by the beautiful Scottish surroundings. We noticed that despite being hectic, campervanning with 2 large golden retrievers - who endlessly sought out the lochs for a swim - keept us busy and each day followed an active routine, we truly felt a disconnect and almost a reset as we were drawn away from our devices. It was this immersion in our surroundings and quiet, often internal reflection that grew into an idea that became Wilder. . . Disconnect for a short while and just focus on your surroundings and see how you feel. We hope you enjoy the time, space and room to think and reflect. Perhaps start a journal…. As autumn gives way to winter and the winds spool up to blow the last of the leaves from the trees, I took a trip to Westonbirt again - we’re lucky to be so close. . The colours are magnificent. The coverage on the ground combined with the leaves - and the rapidly dropping temperatures here in the UK really does show that Winter is coming! With weather warnings on the way near us and the general creep of winter, remember not to use the cold/rain and hopefully some snow as an excuse to spend some or more time outside in the fresh air.
