This is the entirety of the Arizona state forests, the entire Cascades mountain range. Swathes of pristine desert around the national parks in Utah. On the doorstep of Jackson Hole.

Lora Abernathy was an optimist.

She was also, for the moment at least, a dog. That tended to help— both with the optimism and with other, more practical things, like eating and sleeping.

It was also useful for safety. Girls, especially ones living on their own on the streets of a city as crowded and disorganized as Glenhurst, have to worry about men (ranging from creepy to dangerous) and unspoken social rules (ranging from annoying to dangerous— especially when men were also involved).

Dogs can eat scraps from the trash, and the only man they need worry about is the dog-catcher.

Tonight, Lora's belly was full of fish scraps, tossed to her by several friendly dock workers. Her fur was warm, and the evenings air had only just begun to turn from winter's chill to spring's balm, and not yet reached the sweltering damp of summer.

She had time, she knew, curled up in the back of her mind, as the dog padded down side streets and alleys, sniffing this and rubbing on that and requiring minimal input from her, overall.

Lora did not like the dog, but she could not begrudge its usefulness.

Except actually it's the woods, and the woods are maybe haunted as fuck??

Their job: to find what's been making travellers and supply wagons go missing… presuming it doen't find them first. 🌲🌳👻🌳

I made this comic last night after posting my GOFUNDME to let out some anxiety. I know that impending thoughts of doom are a symptom but the state of America recently is getting more alarming every day. But even so, the plant grows through it all.

And then I woke up this morning just shocked. So many kind and caring people have donated, and we’re already almost 1/6 of the way funded, which is already more than I’d dared to hope for. I can see a better future now that I have hope. I feel like I’m allowed to WANT a better present for myself, so I can make a future I WANT to live in. Thank you.
