Amanda Overton saying in an interview that Vi needed to move past the “all cops are evil thing” for caitvi to be together makes me so sick.

Vi was arrested as a teen and abused regularly. The show never expands on Vi’s trauma.

Caitlyn who’s supposedly “one of the good ones” gassed people, almost shot a child, committed/enabled police brutality and hit Vi with her rifle.

If anything Caitlyn proved even more that Vi’s enmity towards enforcers was valid. They all really are just assholes in fancy uniforms.

I’ll forever loathe the writers for how much they downplay what Vi went through.

I don't understand why people call the Firelights morally better just cuz they don’t riot or kill (as if resistance is only valid when you react politely to centuries of oppression).

Why are oppressed people expected to resist peacefully when their oppressors have been brutalizing them for generations?

i wrote a long and detailed answer to this but then i accidentally deleted it l0l 💀 long story short, it is a specific belief of centrist liberal(ish) ideologies, that enacting violence on your oppressors makes you just as bad as they are, if not even worse. and i know it because i was taught specifically this growing up, by people that were in good faith but lacked basic understanding of systemic oppression because they were privileged enough to not care about it or by people that were, willingly or not, oppressors themselves.

about this, i feel like arcane is kinda funny in the cognitive dissonance between the themes introduced in season 1 (systemic oppression, police brutality, etc.), and the way the writers decided to handle them in season 2 ("forgiveness is the answer!" 🤡).

in a way i wish i could consider them and their choices akin as those people from my childhood that were in good faith but too privileged and uncaring, but i can't because they themselves wrote about the situation of zaun, and the first scene of the show to be about police brutality and the people of zaun riotting against their oppressors. they knew the status quo of their fictional world was unjust and oppressive, and they basically said "it's okay how it is, now don"t think about it. see? we had the oppressed butch lesbian character have sex with her abusive cop and former dictator girlfriend. think about them, instead".

i could go on for days on the topic, because the writers did worse than this: they pretended things were starting to change by giving sevika one (1), useless sit in the council, and actually took the character most invested in social change (silco), and had him deliver that horrible and embarassing speech on how jinx needed to "break the cycle of violence" (= aka "oppression", but they couldn't call it that or it would have been clear to everyone what kind of bullshit they were spewing). and of course, it's the oppressed the one "asked" to "break" the cycle of violence, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. which is. horrible horrible. narratively speaking, too.
