I'll go with two of my fc/s. Vivo the Moonrat and Latté the Butterfly!

The history of Vivo's chosen name is... eh. While trying to pick a name for him, the game Lost in Vivo popped up in my head with no correlation to his character (rather, the lack thereof at the time) whatsoever, and it just stuck to me! I did some research for the word vivo to give itself some sense and ended up with the biology-related definition, I think that's where his development as a character kickstarted; mainly the conflict of his lore revolving around something unwelcomed within his body.

To Latté, it is actually a nickname. His real name is 'Geenan Draumoff'. Y'know how the STH franchise loves their word plays, yes? Well, I also wanted to give it a shot.

His nickname is a hypocorism of the word bilateral, while his full name is a word play of gynandromorph, simply because his species takes heavy inspiration from bilateral gynandromorphic butterflies (a.k.a half-male, half-female butterflies). What that means for Latté's biology, that's a question for another day. (◠‿◕ )

Could I please give my two cents because not-hedgehog-amy is the greatest thing—

I don't recall if SEGA's serious about Knuckles being the last echidna, just the last surviving one of this species. I have not read any comics exploring the echidna bloodline either. But in my rewrite attempts, my vision was for there to be 'modern echidnas' with Knuckles being the last of his pure tribal bloodline, isolated up there at Angel Island. Only these 'modern echidnas' have lost those iconic spiked boxing gloves, instead their hands are alike to Tikal (though I envisioned every ancient echidna have spiked hands/gloves regardless of gender).

The divergence of these echidnas was the result of differences in values and conflict within the community, fueled by the tragedy of Pachacamac's reign of greed; I wanted to believe that would be the impetus for an individual to leave the tribe but I've yet to educate myself fully about the matter, so take it with a grain of salt. It's also possible that the entirety of the clan didn't die, because it happened thousands of years ago, yet Knuckles is still thriving in the modern day.

The remaining people of the clan worked to better the way they treat the power of the Master Emerald, (creating a new altar for it with the emerald separating the land apart to be currently known as the Angel Island) while the departed ones proceed to merge with the society beyond Mystic Ruins - crossbreed and whatnot, soon enough, the modern echidnas roam the planet alongside the last pure blood idle on the floating island.

i have this headcanon.

based on the popular theory that Shadow's creation is inspired by the mural from S3&K, i like to think he had a "younger phase" in his development, and it's when he looked most alike to Sonic.

with sloped down quills, but longer compared to Classic Sonic. his pelt also had a faint bluish sheen, before he shortly matured artificially to be the Shadow we know now.

here's a rushed rendition?

i'm sure everyone has speculated this already - there's just something baffling about the characters often mistaking Shadow's very distinct silhouette for Sonic, which would've made sense if his "Terios" design stuck around.

while yes, even if the possibility of the alikeness is irrelevant to the present of SA2, some mysterious and unseen secrets like these are still fun to think about. nods are cool!

speaking of mystery, i like to think the documentation of this phase had been lost to time. the only evidence of it ever occuring is a very clouded photograph of Shadow in said phase, but it's barely even recognizable by the time it was somehow retrieved by either Rouge or Robotnik.
