Top 14 Albums of 2014 That I Listened To Enough to Enjoy and Rank (a.k.a Unofficial)
Yes--St. Vincent, Beck, Thom Yorke, The Roots, New Pornographers, etc. all released albums in 2014. But look at my "Music" list and you might understand why I narrowed it down to fourteen (also, to fit with 2014 because OCD). Thom Yorke needs to ease off the Mac and turn on the amps again. Morning Phase put me to sleep, whereas Modern Guiltinspired me. Electric Version and Crash Years are about the only songs I dig by The New Pornographers. I've lost track of modern hip-hop almost altogether. On that note, convince me to give albums not in the list a listen and here's what I've got:
14. They Want My Soul, Spoon
13. Sonic Highways, Foo Fighters
12. Lost in Alphaville, The Rentals
11. The Voyager, Jenny Lewis
10. 1989, TaySway
9. Our Love, Caribou
8. Ritual in Repeat, Tennis
7. Dunes, Gardens & Villa
6. Awake, Tycho
5. You're Dead!, Flying Lotus
4. La Isla Bonita, Deerhoof
3. Atlas, Real Estate
2. It's Album Time, Todd Terje
1. Everything Will Be Alright in the End, Weezer =w=
That's right. Weezer topped my list this year. Much like the latest season of Hell's Kitchen, this album was the strongest out of a group of mostly lukewarm ones. It felt like Rivers had been f'ing with hardcore Weezer fans since sporting a cowboy hat on the cover of The Red Album. But EWBAITE album-opener Ain't Got Nobody is the most straightforward, honest, not to mention catchiest, pop-rock song Rivers has written in years. Back to the Shack is a worthy first single/apology to most Weezer fans. Inviting other musicians to help pen some tunes didn't hurt, either (see Eulogy For a Rock Band, I've Had It Up to Here, Go Away). They may have stumbled upon The Resistance (Muse) and borrowed the idea of a 3-movement album ender, but damn if those guitar licks aren't intense. While EWBAITE is noBlue Album or Pinkerton (last comparison with those albums ever, promise), it makes up for the "Trainwrecks" that were Raditude (2009) and Hurley (2010) and leaves me hopeful for at least one more stellar album.
