I have a really annoying third position on whether or not art and fiction are actually valuable tools of resistance, which is 'yes but not in a vacuum'. the active part is not the creator. it's you, the viewer. you have to actually take those new thoughts and feelings and do something with them, that may never actually be traceable back to the story or song or folk dance or palaeolithic bear carving that made you hot enough inside your head to effect change. the problem is all the most visible media tastemakers in the world build careers out of chewing cud and doing nothing and teaching everyone else that the purest relationship you can have with art is to do the same. a book is only as revolutionary as the person who reads it. that means YOU. 🫵
