Slugcats!
Behold the floofers.
Tumblr media
I ended up doodling four, inspired by the in-game slugs just for fun. They're not going to be OC-like characters or anything; I just wanted to see what they would look like in my Au.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are a few more designs and me dipping my pen in, trying to get a feel for drawing more clothes. I'll talk about slugcats and how they were affected by the super long stretch of winter and adapted (like in my lantern mice post/ concept art) in the future, especially since there is a lot to ramble about, and I don't yet have all of my wires crossed about other world building aspects that might change things.

Scavenger oc for my Rainworld Au, take this grumpy green boy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Definitely a WIP because I don't have a name for them yet. But I wanted to share since I'm fairly happy with the design. They are an engineer, a profession that's pretty highly respected, and a bit of a prick. I also used them to show off generally what scavenger fashion focuses on. Definitely shiny things, now that I'm writing about it, I think it's a crime I didn't add any pearls, got to get on that next time. But I want how scavengers' dress to accentuate the horns. Hanging things up from them, or accessories near them.
Brussel sprouts horns over here might still change sense I'm experimenting, but I got his general design down. I'm working on a post about slugcats and what they generally look like. I want them to look unique enough but still have that slugcat vibe, since most seem to be one solid color in nature, so that will be a fun challenge. I'll get to be more creative when I do a post in the future about scavcats, which are probably the most prevalent mixes between species in my Au.

Scavs! And a different style too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is this brush on Krita called “shapes fill” that is nice for drawing out a silhouette. I might try drawing other designs in this style since it is easier then lineart for me. Scavs can be so many different colors, and the horns can be so many different shapes. I like to look online and see people's screenshots of some of the ones they have found.
I drew them fully upright as that's how they walk in my Au. Gotta eventually doodle one in a bunch of ancient like drip that would be fun.
These 3 designs are actually from a post on Redit from significantharasment. Here is the link

Got some good practice working with this background. I really have been wanting to improve on my shading skills, especially dynamic lighting and the way it interacts with the environment and the character. I think it can add so much to a drawing. I'm still far away from where I want to be, but I can only get better with practice.
Tumblr media
Also, I’m probably not the only one who has this problem, but does anyone else find karma flowers really hard to draw? They look deceptively easy for a see-through glowing flower.
This character is mostly just a placeholder. I am kinda exploring how to balance the design of creatures. I love the hair, (lol) but I want to add a bit more fur in places, and really nail the base of the design I'm going for. You'll probably see small things shift and change as time goes on.

More concept art for mice in my Au.
Tumblr media
I loveddd drawing these beans for this post. None of them are really oc’s. I just drew random designs, but I had a lot of fun with it. Finding quirks different species can have, like the large eyes and black pupils for lantern mice, I want to continue to find little things I can tweak with my art style to add more differences between species. I also want to talk about this post a little bit more and the ideas I had along with it.
So quick travel back in time, in my AU, it takes place hundreds of thousands of years after the Saints' timeline. The world has started to recover from the years of eternal winter it was stuck in. Ignoring most of the other stuff that happens (A bunch of lore stuff that I will make a post about in the future) Following the lantern mice while the world is starting to get super cold, a majority that could, found stolace from the cold by traveling deeper into the ground along with the rubble. They grew thicker fur and, as a very large amount of time started to pass, started to evolve more. Colleneys, woking together, social, scent, etc... They began to develop minds for using tools, often using the scrap metal and machinery around them.
So even more time passes by, a huge ice age, long time, and the world is finally starting to warm up. And as it does, it starts warming up enough that the snow and ice that covered the world starts to melt. Enough eventually to starts to flood the tunnels and even deep underground, forcing the mice up and other creatures up. Even more years pass (several generations still, even more time) and we finally stop this magic school bus trip at the time where all my characters and general Au takes place, while lantern mice are still more adapted to the surface than the first ones that came out from the tunnels below. The lantern mice still struggle.
Other mice were used to colonies of mostly themselves. But not the sight of predators. Their brains still have that hardcore prey anxiety from when their ancestors were used as delicious bite-sized snacks. Others are much better at managing it, some only get it when seeing certain features. Like an open mouth or sharp teeth, others want to run for the hills the second they see a lizard. It really depends on the mouse. Another thing I also like is that some small colonies of mice exist that survived on the surface. And so there is a bit of difference in adaptations from the normal glow mice that I'm definitely gonna have to draw sometime in the future.
If anyone has any questions, ill try my best to answer them.

The glowy slugcat lanturn mouse hybrid returns!
A few of you might recognize this character if you saw my previous post with the lizards. I wanted to draw him again, but I'm still working on a name. Character-specific lore is gonna be a little short as I'm focusing on more of the grander scale world building and working out how the creatures in my au got from the end of the saints timeline to millions of years in the future here. I'm not trying to be 100% accurate with evolution. (As you can probably tell with the more humanoid features. xD) But I want it to be well fleshed out.

If anyone has any questions, I will try my best to answer them. Things might change in the future, but I want to offer if anyone is curius as well.

Drawing out some concept designs.
Tumblr media
The top blue one is a small doodle I did to understand how scavengers would look in my Au. They can be a variety of different colors, the shapes of their horns, and their overall body structure, even in game. So I definitely want to use that to my advantage when making different designs.
I haven't covered it yet, but there is a social hierarchy that is similarly based on the concepts that the ancients had. Such as groups collecting and being labeled under a certain “house’s” like the “house of braids” we learn about in game. And those houses forming over time based on the religious ideals and opinions.
In bigger cities, technology is much more advanced. (not nearly to the level of the ancients) But I imagine uncovering the scraps and what was left of their civilization, they were able to advance quicker than if they had to figure it all out for themselves. And that also helps me explain how iterators exist in my Au. They're just not made in the massive scale of mega superstructures anymore. I'll post something about iterators soon, I love drawing them. And I'll try to work on a general timeline post so it's easier to understand. Since right now I'm just trying to decode all the ideas in my head.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A small comic with a slugcat and a lantern mouse. Oc’s that I will work on more. The poor glowy beans have been chomped on throughout their entire existence, so a lot of them are a little nervous, especially around predators. There are so many concepts I want to make posts on. Like how the creature's behavior or inherent fears (such as a lantern mouse’s prey anxiety) affects how they interact with others and their culture.
I've had this Au concept in my head for at least a year, and it's been a major comfort for me. But it's very interesting and challenging trying to start building lore, stories, and characters from a specific point. And trying to put my scatterbrained thoughts into words and sharing them. Things might change, and my posts are most definitely not going to be focused and a bit messy, but I think posting even sketches and rough drafts helps, and I can be happy with that. I love the idea of slowly being able to work on it over time. And develop some fun dynamics and cool world-building. Hopefully, this tumbler thing turns into something I can scroll through and see my progress over the years.

Lizards!!
The jaws are by far the hardest thing to work around but I think I was able to get the general shape right. I don’t have as much experience drawing lizards, so it was a nice challenge. I like the idea that they are most similar to ancients in just frill/ body type but with large tails.
Tumblr media
In my au, they’re probably the most primitive species. Just in the form of technological achievements, most likely due to how their evolution prioritized adaptations for hunting and defense first, rather than the pack mentality, slugcats and especially scavengers had that led them to experiment with tools and further resources. They have their pecking order as lizards do, and their culture emphasizes strength more than ingenuity. In less developed parts of the world, lizards do still hunt and eat scavengers and slugcats.
Tumblr media
Hahaha I got maybe 5% of the clothes done and went, yeah maybe not.
Tumblr media
Two oc’s I'm still working on, a black lizard and slugcat lantern mouse hybrid. I definitely am gonna come back to them since I think coming up with different religious ideals and cultures, especially for creatures that live in the dark in Rainworld, is a lot of fun. In this Au the void and karma do exist, but it works in a different way that I'll make a post about in the future.
Relationships between lizards and scavengers and in general any prey item is a little tense. So I love the idea of some sweet mouse Boi making friends with a lanky blind boy.
Tumblr media
Here is the drawing without the clothes. If you were curious, I have a hard time drawing them, so I like to finish the body sketch before adding anything over the top.
Tumblr media
The first sketches I did of lizards in my au. I definitely want to add a ponytail to one when I make up another design. But I want to save it for the higher nobility. That's where I can really add some ancient drip.

First post yay!!
This one is just quick doodle I did on flipaclip to test posting on tumbler.
Tumblr media
This was originally my icon, but I decided to change it. I definitely am planning on making a better one in the future. The iterator depicted is just a random design, the mark on their head literally being “✨” but sparkles seem fun, so I’ll probably try to incorporate that into a more complete character in the future.
I’m going to be working on some other designs, hopefully an oc or two, involving lizards. (I’m definitely going to struggle with their jaws.) Especially since I’m going to try to make them more ancient adjacent, I’ll definitely make a post about that in the future.
