On Monday the 30th of January we took a trip to the Tate Modern gallery in London. Here, I discovered my new favourite artist - Marina Ambramovic. I had heard about Ambramovic before, but had never really looked in depth at her work. The piece that was displayed at the gallery is called ‘Rhythm 0.’ 'Rhythm 0’ was a performance piece done in 1974 whereby Abramovic stood still for 6 hours and allowed the public to do whatever they wanted to her. In an interview, the artist said she did this because she wanted to see how far the public would go. At first, people were kind to her - they hugged and kissed her and gave her roses. However, as time went on, the public became more and more wild. They cut her with scissors, stuck rose thorns in her body, cut her clothes off. One man even held a loaded gun to her neck. The reason why I liked this piece so much is because I think it’s interesting to see what people are capable of when they don’t have to face consequences or take responsibility. When the performance finished, Ambramovic returned to herself again and began to move and talk, but when she returned to being human, the people in the gallery ran away.

Russia’s Columbine School Shooting

Known by his peers as shy and introverted, 18 year old Vladislav Roslyakov unleashed a reign of terror now known as “Russia’s Columbine” on Kerch Polytechnic College on October 17, 2018. Beginning with a nail bomb detonating on the first floor of the school around 11:45 a.m, Vladislav then continued to walk through the halls on the second floor with an 8-gauge shotgun shooting at random teachers and students, killing 20 people and injuring 70 more. Eye witnesses say the attack lasted nearly 15 minutes, with the shooter ending the terror in the school’s library after he committed suicide.
As a young boy, Vladislav had poor grades and no interest in his education. However, in 2015 he enrolled into the Polytechnic College in order to become an electrician, and this is when his fascination with explosives and weapons was born. A devout Jehovas Witness, his mother secluded him from the outside world. She forbade him from going to the cinema, restricted all social activity, and didn’t allow him to use a computer until he was 16. In the days leading up to the attack, he claimed he didn’t believe in an afterlife and on the Eve of the attack, he was seen burning a bible that had highlighted verses. An ex girlfriend of Vladislav claims that he was bullied by his peers and expressed his hatred for them for not accepting him because he was different, even threatening a shooting and suicide in the week leading up to that fateful day.
Adorned in black trousers and a white shirt with the word hatred on the front, Vladislav Roslyakov committed a spree shooting that had eerily similar characteristics to that of the Columbine High School school shooting committed by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Following the string of killings, Vladislav entered the schools library, leaned up against a book case and put the barrel of the shotgun in his mouth, pulling the trigger.
