(1) Hello everyone. I'm from Ukraine. Please help spread the information about African and Nigerian students in Ukraine. #AfricansinUkraine
I read from @ nzekiev on twitter that the day before yesterday it was very hard for Africans to get on any train in Kyiv, they were letting them in the last, many managed to get in only coz they started pushing African women into the train so they had to allow everyone in. Before that if they managed to get on the train they were sent back outside with the phrase "Ukrainians first", but nobody was checking anyone's passports.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today, February 27, he says the Ukrainian soldiers at the Polish border were holding them at gunpoint if they crossed the border before Ukrainians. These are students, they can't be fighting this war!!! Other people of color share on twitter that it's harder for them to cross the border, a Nigerian medical student told @ stephheharty they were told Ukrainians go first and were sent to the back of the queue by Ukrainian soldiers on Polish border.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
@ Damilare_arah shared a video where Ukrainian soldiers block Africans from getting on trains. (https://twitter.com/Damilare_arah/status/1497654141350522880?t=rkNx-B9TffKopCRtfgZodA&s=19)
I can't figure out how to download videos from Twitter so I'm attaching screenshots. (https://twitter.com/Damilare_arah/status/1497855205098106880?t=gi_dUgx8nFI36KqlH-CeEA&s=19) (https://twitter.com/nzekiev/status/1497805019311218689?t=hz-3gS0hFxwAZQddLZI85w&s=19)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We must help. They can't be denied shelter while every other white Ukrainian gets to cross the border right before their eyes. @ chylady and @ Damilare_arah share all the important information for Africans and Nigerians on where to find help and also donations.
@ korrinesky is actively sharing all the information. This thread increases to this day and time:
Tumblr media
They also have a Telegram chat for African and Caribbean students who are in Lviv but I can't seem to be able to copy the link directly so I'm sending the link to the tweet:
Tumblr media
Use the hashtag #AfricansinUkraine and mentions @UN @RedCross @UNESCO @wateraid @amnesty @gatesfoundation @FordFoundation @ActionAid @Oxfam on twitter.

At times I suspect that a lot of discussion about why machine learning sucks is ignoring the elephant in the room, insofar as when I dig into the particulars of how machine learning tends to fail, some of those failure modes start to look awfully familiar.
What does an indifferent student do when faced with a series of quizzes that don’t seem to relate to anything, set by an evaluator who provides no feedback beyond marking answers right or wrong?
They’ll memorise, learning to identify particular types of questions and regurgitate the expected answers on demand, without developing any real understanding of what they’re talking about.
They’ll bullshit and guess, because the penalty for being wrong is no worse than the penalty for not answering at all, and a bullshit answer may score partial credit by accident.
They’ll come up with wild generalisations about the subject matter whose foundational reasoning is utter nonsense, but which happens to yield mostly correct answers, most of the time, within the narrow domain of what’s being tested for.
They’ll game the system, identifying patterns and flaws in the way the material is presented that allow correct – or at least correct-ish – answers to be derived independently what’s actually being asked for. (e.g., noticing that the same letter is never the answer twice in a row on a multiple-choice exam, or that an “all of the above” option is only included when it is all of the above, etc.)
Like, these aren’t failure modes of machine learning. They’re just failure modes of learning.
Maybe the real problem we need to overcome before we can really tackle machine learning in any constructive way is the fact that our pedagogy objectively sucks, is what I mean to say.

If you're at your low/lowest...
Have some compassion for yourself you're at a low point but it doesn't means you're not worthy of love, and hope. You know you can do better, you swayed off the track, which happens actually pretty frequently. The good thing is that you got lots of resources, YouTube videos for improvement, Tumblr posts, Pinterest pins, etc. You got a wealth of knowledge about how to get outta this trap, it's just a matter of trying different things until you find the right thing that clicks perfectly for you.
Self-improvement is complex, not only one factor gonna better your life it's a bunch of smaller habits that compound, you gotta find a better lifestyle and mindset that fits better you and makes you feel better about yourself and happy.
Every choice you do is buliding the future self you'll be, it's every small choice that is a expression of self-love or self-hate, and the more you express to yourself self-love everything just plainly goes better. You drink water to feel good because you love you, you eat good foods because you want every cell of your being to be well nourished so you feel good. You eat delicious food because delicious food makes your brain go all happy because you love yourself. You sleep because it just freaking feels good. That's DOPE.
Start practicing that act of self-love via good actions now, it just doesn't needs to be grand, hell it should never be.
Self-improvement is a lifelong journey, it has its downs and ups, what matters is how you act facing this journey, are you gonna get stuck on the lows forever and suffer? Or are you going to try new things there and there, to see what happens and have fun along this experimentation?

WTF is an NTF? No matter how many times I’ve had it explained to me, it still makes no sense. The best I can figure that it’s a form of cryptocurrency with personalized artwork made on a really environmentally unfriendly material being sold for ridiculous prices just so suckers can get unique furry artz

we probably lost a lot of medical knowledge during the witch hunts because of how many mid wives were persecuted, and how men took over the field of medicine. I bet a few hundred years ago a mid wife might actually have some kind of knowledge about conditions that affect women exclusively which we still haven’t bothered to research in our modern society.

You don’t get to where you want to be by just wishing and making vision boards. Goal setting is the first step. Next you have to break your goals down into steps that form an actionable plan. This is where I struggle the most as I love to wing things. I’m learning that life requires a plan. Yes you should still be flexible with your plan as life is full of surprises and isn’t linear but you do need to have a plan. This weekend I’m going to be spending some time reviewing and rewriting my goals to i can then break them down into a plan, you can refer to it as the procèss like @lamide.elizabeth does with hers. She has an amazing video on goal setting that I will link in my linktree. Have a great day girlies!

Research strongly suggests COVID-19 virus enters the brain
More and more evidence is coming out that people with COVID-19 are suffering from cognitive effects, such as brain fog and fatigue.
And researchers are discovering why. The SARS-CoV-2 virus, like many viruses before it, is bad news for the brain. In a study published in Nature Neuroscience, researchers found that the spike protein, often depicted as the red arms of the virus, can cross the blood-brain barrier in mice.
This strongly suggests that SARS-CoV-2, the cause of COVID-19, can enter the brain.
The spike protein, often called the S1 protein, dictates which cells the virus can enter. Usually, the virus does the same thing as its binding protein, said lead author William A. Banks, a professor of medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine and a Puget Sound Veterans Affairs Healthcare System physician and researcher. Banks said binding proteins like S1 usually by themselves cause damage as they detach from the virus and cause inflammation.
“The S1 protein likely causes the brain to release cytokines and inflammatory products,” he said.
In science circles, the intense inflammation caused by the COVID-19 infection is called a cytokine storm. The immune system, upon seeing the virus and its proteins, overreacts in its attempt to kill the invading virus. The infected person is left with brain fog, fatigue and other cognitive issues.
Banks and his team saw this reaction with the HIV virus and wanted to see if the same was happening with SARS CoV-2.
Banks said the S1 protein in SARS-CoV2 and the gp 120 protein in HIV-1 function similarly. They are glycoproteins – proteins that have a lot of sugars on them, hallmarks of proteins that bind to other receptors. Both these proteins function as the arms and hand for their viruses by grabbing onto other receptors. Both cross the blood-brain barrier and S1, like gp120, is likely toxic to brain tissues.
“It was like déjà vu,” said Banks, who has done extensive work on HIV-1, gp120, and the blood-brain barrier.
The Banks’ lab studies the blood-brain barrier in Alzheimer’s, obesity, diabetes, and HIV. But they put their work on hold and all 15 people in the lab started their experiments on the S1 protein in April. They enlisted long-time collaborator Jacob Raber, a professor in the departments of Behavioral Neuroscience, Neurology, and Radiation Medicine, and his teams at Oregon Health & Science University.
The study could explain many of the complications from COVID-19.
“We know that when you have the COVID infection you have trouble breathing and that’s because there’s infection in your lung, but an additional explanation is that the virus enters the respiratory centers of the brain and causes problems there as well,” said Banks.
Raber said in their experiments transport of S1 was faster in the olfactory bulb and kidney of males than females. This observation might relate to the increased susceptibility of men to more severe COVID-19 outcomes.
As for people taking the virus lightly, Banks has a message:
“You do not want to mess with this virus,” he said. “Many of the effects that the COVID virus has could be accentuated or perpetuated or even caused by virus getting in the brain and those effects could last for a very long time.”
This study was partially supported by a National Institute on Aging-funded COVID-19 supplement to a shared RF1 grant of Banks and Raber.

A few decades ago, it was a rare sight to see a woman working in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) position. Today, while more common, women are still outnumbered by their male counterparts and significantly underrepresented. Based upon scientific research, this poses new challenges at the dawn of the era of digital transformation.

“A lot of native speakers are happy that English has become the world’s global language. They feel they don’t have to spend time learning another language,” says Chong.
“But… often you have a boardroom full of people from different countries communicating in English and all understanding each other and then suddenly the American or Brit walks into the room and nobody can understand them.”
The non-native speakers, it turns out, speak more purposefully and carefully, typical of someone speaking a second or third language. Anglophones, on the other hand, often talk too fast for others to follow, and use jokes, slang and references specific to their own culture, says Chong. In emails, they use baffling abbreviations such as ‘OOO’, instead of simply saying that they will be out of the office.
“The native English speaker… is the only one who might not feel the need to accommodate or adapt to the others,” she adds.
