The hard truth about autism acceptance that a lot of people don't want to hear is that autism acceptance also inherently requires acceptance of people who are just weird.

And yes, I mean Those TM people. Middle schoolers who growl and bark and naruto run in the halls. Thirtysomethings who live with their parents. Furries. Fourteen-year-olds who identify as stargender and use neopronouns. Picky eaters. Adults in fandoms. People who talk weird. People who dress weird.

Because autistic people shouldn't have to disclose a medical diagnosis to you to avoid being mocked and ostracized for stuff that, at absolute worst, is annoying. Ruthlessly deriding people for this stuff then tacking on a "oh, but it's okay if they're autistic" does absolutely nothing to help autistic people! Especially when undiagnosed autistic people exist.

Like it or not, if you want to be an ally to autistic people, you're going to have to take the L and leave eccentric, weird people alone. Even if you don't know them to be autistic. You shouldn't be looking for Acceptable Reasons to be mean to people in the first place. Being respectful should be the default.

this is kinda like when autistic people go "oh but autistic people aren't actually no empathy, we just experience it differently" ok but some people really don't feel empathy. or "we are actually perfectly capable" some of us aren't. or "portraying us as childish is inherently bad and evil" what about those of us who do have childish interests or habits?

people are all about supporting disabled people until they can't mask or have symptoms that can't be romanticized, and it makes me so upset

sometimes in media people will portray disabled characters in a somewhat stereotypical way, or in a way that really emphasizes the character's suffering, as if thats all being disabled was.

now, a lot of people feel upset over that, and understandably so! there's so much more to a person than their disability!!

however...

there are people with stereotypical symptoms. there are people who suffer constantly because of their symptoms. when u complain "oh but not ALL disabled people do that, so this representation is problematic and not valid", ur completely ignoring the people who DO relate to it.

im not saying every disabled character is portrayed well or respectably, there is definitely a LOT of room for improvement in media, im just saying u shouldn't hate on something just because you specifically might not relate to it because ur symptoms are less severe or stuff like that
