Chakotay suddenly clenched his fists with frustration, surprising her.  

“What’s wrong?” Kathryn asked.

“Days ago, this situation we’re in would have been a dream come true to me,” he said.  “Now I feel nothing but emptiness.  It doesn’t matter how you feel about me.  Those feelings I had for you were mine, the good and the bad.  I can remember everything, Kathryn, but I can’t feel it.  I can’t even have the full memory of you!”

She looked into his brown eyes, so hollow now.  What had she done? 

“I wanted you to be free of me,” she said.  “Because I couldn’t give you what you wanted.”

“Because you don’t love me, right?” he asked, his eyes never leaving hers.

excerpt:

". . .I told you I thought I saw Q.  Chakotay, I did see him.  It wasn’t a dream.  I made a wish that you didn’t love me anymore.  I think he actually granted it.”

Chakotay tilted his head.

“So this was Q’s gift?” he asked.

“Yes,” Kathryn said.  

Chakotay stood before her, a stranger in her friend’s clothing.

“Then I guess I should thank you both,” he said, and left her.

Janeway, in denial of her own feelings, wishes for Chakotay to not love her anymore, so he can be happy. But she has no idea what that wish will change.

“Don’t waste your wish,” Q tsked.  “I will leave after you make your wish and I’ve granted you your well-deserved present.  So what do you want?  Wait!  I know.  It’s Chuckles, isn’t it?  I can hand deliver him to you in a bow.”

Kathryn glared at him.

“I don’t want him,” she said.  “I’ve already destroyed him!  He wishes he’d never loved me.  For his sake, I wish he didn’t love me either.”

“Granted,” Q smirked with a snap of his fingers, and disappeared.

Adorable Threshold AU for the 18th! 🤩😍

My submission for Day 18 of @25daysofvoyager! :3

I wanted to work with December in the First Splinter Timeline (Beyer) books which OF COURSE landed in Protectors lmao. So Kathryn's on Earth with Philippa, and Chakotay is on Voyager in the DQ with Amelia, Ed, and the Paris family. :)

My ideas for Kathryn and Pip's Christmas surrounded Kathryn being mopey and emotional (Early on pregnant with Liam), and her baking some pumpkin stuff cough CRAVINGS and burning everything haha. Philippa and Gretchen find Kathryn's old cherished toy Sneakers (The green and purple mouse) and Gretchen helps Philippa patch him up to give to her momma for Christmas.

At the other end of the universe, Chakotay's a bit unfamiliar with Christmas traditions and reaches out to Tom and B'Elanna for help. I fell in love with the idea that Miral ends up showing Chakotay how to celebrate Christmas and later the two team up to kill Santa AKA Tom. Ed and Amelia are getting to that age where they don't believe anymore but they're supportive of their papa getting to do that kiddy Christmas stuff with their half-sister.
