Brain Power: 3north competes, for the first time, in the 2014 Big Idea Challenge, raising over $1000 for PBS Kids. - 3north - Google+
The Big Idea Challenge is a Solve-a-thon Fundraiser for PBS Kids, the children's programming arm of Public Broadcast Stations. PBS Kids is the inventor in edu-tainment (educational entertainment), with shows like Sesame Street, Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, The Electric Company, and Bill Nye the Science Guy.
In this Solve-a-thon, teams race all over the Science Museum of Virginia, solving clues and puzzles for points. The teams solving the most clues correctly, and in the fastest time, win wonderfully tacky prizes (and moderate fame and fortune).
For 3north's first time participating, our team fared very well, solving all 13 clues correctly, and placing 5th (among 20 teams). From friends, family, and colleagues, we raised over $1000 (in just 2 days) to help introduce PBS Kids introduce a whole new generation to fun learning. It was frantic, fun, and we are ready to compete again.

POTTERFIELD, Tyler, of Oregon Hill, Richmond, died suddenly on Friday morning, April 25, 2014. The loss of this good and beautiful man is unfathomable. His enthusiasm, love and devotion to his work and city planning, the James Riverfront, his cycling, gardening, hiking and community building projects were unbounded. He was a man of information and a writer and researcher of history and culture. He was devoted to his family and much loved in return by them; his wife, Maura Meinhardt; parents, Ruth and Tom Potterfield of Savannah Ga.; sister, Beth Hiers and her family of Destin, Fla.; and countless friends and colleagues, whose lives he generously embellished in his city of Richmond and on his beloved banks of Penns Creek. A memorial for the community to celebrate the life of Tyler will be announced in the near future. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Valentine Richmond History Center in honor of Tyler's commitment to his city and its history.
Champion Lost: 3north was saddened to learn of Tyler Potterfield's passing. RVA has lost a compassionate ally for history and culture. Our thoughts are with his wife and family; he will be greatly missed.
