It was when I was 12 and I got cast in The Hunger Games, and people called me the N-word and said that the death of my character, Rue, would be less sad because I was black. That was the first moment I realized being black was such a crucial part of my identity in terms of the way that I was perceived and how it would affect any line of work that I wanted to pursue. I often find myself in situations where I am the token black person. It can feel like this enormous weight. I have definitely had moments when my hair felt too big or like I needed to make myself smaller and easier to digest.
Amandla Stenberg (“So when was the moment that you realized exactly what you were taking on just by existing in this space?”)

just a reminder that just because someone engages in sex work doesn’t mean they give up their right to consent to sexual acts. period.

A protester who uses a wheelchair holds up a sign that says “Fix The System: Not Me.”
For many activists, the fight for the rights of people with disabilities centers on changing the attitudes of society and removing barriers, not “fixing” the person with a disability.

Meaningful youth participation is NOT about tokenism, when young people are involved in processes without actually being able to influence those processes or their outcomes. Meaningful youth participation IS about young people being able to make a real contribution and being given opportunities to provide input and have their ideas listened to and considered. Meaningful youth participation IS about building real partnerships between young people and adults based on mutual respect and trust.
“Youth must help lead the movement for sexual and reproductive health and rights” by Ana Aguilera

I really hate the phrase “problematic” because it minimizes what the person actually did. Like someone being an abuser or violent racist isn’t the same as some 13 year old who doesn’t know what cissexism is.

Why would you trust a teen to raise a kid, but not to have an abortion?
by Jessica Valenti
“Having a process that is speedy, private and reasonable-to-navigate is vital for young people who find themselves pregnant and are already fearful and vulnerable. This is especially true because, as a whole, teenagers are more likely to find out about their pregnancies later on than adults do, and if they are to avoid later abortions – which are riskier and more expensive, and which state legislatures often make more difficult to access – they need to be able to obtain services quickly.
It is unreasonable and illogical to expect that teens raise children or give birth and put them up for adoption but not be given the option to consider abortion. The desire for parents to be involved in important decisions in their children’s lives is understandable, but parental protectiveness cannot trump a person’s right to their own body and their own future.”

Professionalism is a funny term, because it masquerades as neutral despite being loaded with immense oppression. As a concept, professionalism is racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, classist, imperialist and so much more — and yet people act like professionalism is non-political. Bosses across the country constantly tell their employees to ‘act professionally’ without a second thought. Wear a garment that represents your non-Western culture to work? Your boss may tell you it’s unprofessional. Wear your hair in braids or dreadlocks instead of straightened? That’s probably unprofessional too. Wear shoes that are slightly scuffed because you can’t yet afford new ones? People may not think you’re being professional either.

“The data is loud and clear. It’s time for us to make a serious commitment to offering Muslim youth sex education programming that addresses their needs. Muslim [young people] are expected to abstain from premarital sex and alcohol and substance consumption, without any additional context or preparing them with decision-making skills. In other words, there is often no emphasis on developing critical thinking and decision-making skills or a healthy self-concept in relation to the body, sexuality, and spirituality. Outside of the home, in addition to their natural curiosity, these same young people are constantly bombarded with sexual images, peer pressure, and messages encouraging them to have sex, and actively partake in romantic relationships.”
