This tweet by Painter's VA does confirm that they are uncomfortable with sebpainter, and they and some other devs consider their bond familiar. These two replies sum up my thoughts better than I can phrase myself:

So it comes down to the relationship between developers' preferences and the fandom that's grown wildly beyond those developers' expectations. It must suck to write the bones of a dynamic with intent to make it familial, and the fans go and start shipping them, and now it's weird and uncomfortable for everyone when they do double down on that. There is no way to rewrite history and start over to make that familial intent clear from the beginning and now the writers have to live with the consequences.

...but that's kind of what happens in a media that blows up. This is where I extend my sympathies to the devs. This sucks.

But I tag what I post, so it can be avoided. I've made my stance on Sebastian and Painter's relationship clear. And, well, neither groups are budging, so what's the point of ripping each other to shreds over it?

Friendly Reminder that Sebpainter is a proship and by shipping it you are making pAInters Voice Actor uncomfortable! I cannot understand how people who call themselves fans of a work could so blatantly ignore the boundaries and comfort of a person who frankly the media would not be the same without!

What an ask to receive right before I sleep! goddamn. apologies if this is frazzled and not worded well, but it's late and this ask is genuinely something I've been hoping I'd never get confronted about but alas the Internet is not so kind.

1. I've explicitly stated I don't see Sebastian and Painter as siblings. I do not write them as siblings and anyone who reads my work with siblinghood in mind can fuck off. I actively think the devs calling them brothers is a poor writing choice, and that's all I want to say on that matter.

2. In case it must be said: I'm not proship. And I don't appreciate you tying me in with that. You saying "it's proship!" doesn't magically make it true. You are actively assuming the worst in me.

3. See, I don't really keep up with development. I know NOTHING from before Worth the Wait dropped. I don't know anything about the devs and VAs. Here's where I'll dare to meet you where you stand: Who is Painter's VA, and where is proof they are uncomfortable with people shipping Sebastian and Painter? I'm tempted to specify "people who see them as siblings AND ship them" because I want the full picture. This is genuinely the first I'm hearing about any of this!

Concluding with this: While I've read snippets of past drama between the developers and fans, I don't know anywhere near the true and full picture of the relationship between the Pressure devs and the fandom, and I want to assume the best in the situation, I think it's bad writing. I think it's causing pointless strife in the community. I tag my things, people can blacklist it, I've made it clear I disagree with the actual writing in-game. But I truly do want to read what the actual VA has said about things. Again, that part is news to me!

To my knowledge, there's been no developer complaint about sebpainter before Worth the Wait dropped. All this sibling scare has been, as far as I'm aware, recent. And if there has been: I DIDN'T KNOW! My interest in this game has waxed and waned but I've never been in the trenches of it until just now AND IT SUCKS IN HERE!!! HOLY SHIT GET ME OUT OF HERE

some buddycrew doodles. they're a clingy bunch

during their company time, if a crewmate couldn't sleep, they'd crack and lay on the uncomfortable ship ground with buddy. nothing like cuddling up to a warm husk to soothe one's nerves
