What Pixar’s Coco got right

I just got back from my third trip to Mexico, and rewatched Pixar’s Coco. I was pleasantly surprised to see a lot of familiar sights! 

Paper Banners

From the small towns to big cities, colorful decorations are stretched across the streets! 

Business Signs 

Especially in small towns, family business are painted onto the buildings, usually with the family name and date of establishment. 

Street Dogs

I laughed at this line, because it’s true!! There are a lot of “perros de calle” in small towns, and they’re super sweet and love to beg for food. My sister made the mistake of naming this street dog and he didn’t stop following us for the three days we stayed in this town.

I don’t know how they get up there. 

Gazebos 

We shot off our New Years’ fireworks in a plaza that looks a lot like this.

Ancient Architecture 

Many ancient cultures who inhabited Mexico used this style of pyramid for temples, houses, and administrative buildings. 

Tlaloc, is that you?

The entrance to the Land of the Dead looks a lot like the Aztecs’ depiction of their rain god. 

Alebrijes

At artisan markets you can find shops filled with intricately and brightly painted animals. I knew they looked familiar! 

Street Art

Mexico has some the best street art I’ve ever seen. Walls, businesses, doors, and even multistory office buildings are covered in bright, beautiful murals. 

Pan Dulce 

A common Mexican breakfast or holiday food is sweet bread, and you can buy them to your heart’s content at any bakery. 

You know a lot of research went into this movie when I feel like I’m back in Mexico just watching it! Amazing work, Pixar!!

Palms that stood still made a green roof, covered on the underside with a quivering triangle of reflections of the lagoon

The seaward edge of the platform stood looking down into the water

The coral was scribbled on the sea as though a gaint hand bent down to reproduce the shape of the island in a flowing chalk line but tired before he finished

Beyond that the platform there was mare enchantment, some act of god

Baked sand inside the lagoon so that was a long, deep pool in the beach with a high ledge of pink granite at the further end

It was clear at the bottom and bright with the efflorescence of tropical weed and coral

Inside was peacock water, rocks and weeds showing as in an aquarium; outside was the dark blue of the sea

The tide was running so that long streaks of foam tailed away from the reef and for a moment they felt that the boat was moving steadily astern

A school of tiny, glittering fish flickered hither and thinner

There was strip of seaweed-strewn beach that was low and there was almost as firm as a road

There, too, jutting into the lagoon, was the platform, with insect-like figures moving near it

The island ran true to form and the incredible pool, which clearly was only invaded by the sea at high tide, was so deep at one end that it was dark green

The heat seemed to increase till it became a threatening weight and the lagoon attacked them with blinding effuglence

All the shadows on Ralph were reversed; geen above, bright from the lagoon

A kind if glamour was spread over them and the scene and they were conscious of the glamour and made happy by it
