Slightly evil Gary drawing
#my art#Damn those wall-eyes really make him look like himself#Also I think I want to do hatching more often#It's a pretty simple way to make a drawing more interesting#It might become a more permanent part of my style

I just realised - I should draw Gar a bit more wall-eyed. Like, look at his portrait.

It might be a part of capturing that specific charm he has.
#I hope me posting my thoughts like this isn't too spammy#It feels quite freeing!#I used to never do that I always only posted art on my other blogs#But it is fun to archive my thoughts like this#I hope you guys enjoys these posts at least a little bit!

Made myself a silly summer-themed banner image :3
I like it when blogs change banners for the seasons. It's cozy.
#my art#He looks a bit dopey here#But it's cute I suppose#Oh I think I made his hair a bit too short#Anyways#I struggled with drawing clouds for a while before giving up and just doing a graphic sun#Also check out that texture oh wow#For a while I downloaded various brush packs to find brushes that could imitate the ones the portraits use#Well I never found the perfect ones but now I have a bunch of texture brushes so I guess that's neat#I know the exact brushes the artist used but it costs money and is Photoshop-only I think

Personally, I do think he can change for the better, become more nice and rational and intelligent and popular and succesful and all, but it would require some effort. Lots of soul searching and such.
I like to think he will become a better/happier person, because the alternative makes me sad.
#Feel free to shoot me an ask if you have extended thoughts about this#I think a key factor for him would be getting some new friends#Lena and Morell are great but they don't really challenge his beliefs#Plus...they're pretty old#I'm not saying hanging out with old people is bad just that Gary could probably benefit from hanging out with people his own age for once

I don't have anything to add... he's ungainly...that's kinda cute isn't it?
#I just love these rare moments when the game describes him so straightforwardly#This is up there with “This person is unhappy”#Maybe I should start a tag for Fayde screenshots huh#I'll do that tomorrow I should be sleeping by now#I spent the past hour doing a drawing experiment trying to make my style more sharp and shapey and stylish and such#But it came out a bit#Well#Ungainly#But I think I'm on the right path! So you can look forward to some artistic evolution

Here's a drawing I did a while ago and just forgot to post.
This is pure vibe-based speculation but I feel like Gary had a mildly melancholic childhood.
I imagine he grew up relatively poor.
I also think he never really had his "thing", you know? That one thing a child can be good at that can build a healthy self-esteem. Not great enough at anything to stand out or be particularly popular.
He probably spent a lot of time reading. It's cute to think that the Man from Hjelmdall interest could be a lifelong thing.
#my art#Gary just gives off the feeling of a person who isn't traumatised or anything#But didn't get something they needed at some point in their life you know?#Of course this is not really based on anything but vibes#So any other ideas you might have are just as valid

Alright, so I've made a decision - this blog will continue!
I thought about things for a day and came to the conclusion that it would be a shame to just delete this blog all-together.
I un-privated all those previous posts and removed any main tags. And I won't add any main tags in the future.
This means that this blog will only be accessible to those who seek it. Like some kind of secret underground lair, meant only for the chosen ones.
So if you see this... you're in the Secret Club B)
#I genuinely love the thought if this blog being relatively private#While still being accesible#No one can get mad at me now!#Are you unnerved by my dedication?#Well you sought this out! This is the Gary Fan space! Get out then if you hate it so much!#Now this is freedom#I might even get a bit more cringe so get ready for that fellas

I might delete this blog, or at least private it.
It's nothing dramatic. Over the past few days, I just saw a few vagueposts about me and how bad this blog is. I'm not mad at anyone. I just don't think I have enough tact to post about Gary without people thinking I directly support his beliefs.
As I said, it's really nothing dramatic, but when people dislike me online, it make me quite anxious and I don't think it would be good for me to regularly see people express how my blog makes them feel hurt and how they think I am a honestly hateful person.
It's a bit lousy things have to be this way. I was having fun. I genuinely like Gary and I thought others that like him might find this blog interesting. But if I make more people upset, then it's just not worth it.
It's all just autism, all the way through. I got fixated on a minor character and then didn't realize I could upset people and then a bit of pushback affected me more than it should have.
Stuff like this just keeps happening to me, man...I just don't have the ability to talk about anything problematic without upsetting people. I guess the logical thing would be to avoid mentioning topics like that, since I'm unable to do it tastefully.
I'm just gonna whine for a bit - this sucks. It sucks that I have this character I like, but I can't express it without upsetting people. It sucks how much this affects me. It sucks that I unintentionally made people unhappy.
But I can't ruminate on this forever. I'll move in. Maybe I'll keep drawing Gary without showing it to anyone, that's fine, I'll live. At the end of the day, it's really not a big deal.
#I am not putting this in the main tag so I suppose this will only be seen by my 3 followers and whoever decides to look at this blog#Hey guys! So long and thanks for all the fish

i really loved playing disco and your fascination with this very minor character is so interesting to me. what made you create this account/be so invested in gary? this is just a genuine ask, not meant with any offense
Oh man, I've been waiting for this ask! I think anyone who really likes a character would love an ask like this.
Well, I suppose it was love at first sight. Before I even met him in game, I saw his portrait on the internet and thought "Wow, this guy looks interesting! I'm looking forward to meeting him!". I guess it was the combination of the dramatic colorful flag background, with the background lines literally coming to the front to envelop him. Also, his face. A bit serious, a bit silly. A bit empty behind the eyes - charming! Also, we have the same haircut lol. In summary, I quite like his design - which is a big part of why I like drawing him.
Then I actually talked to him in-game and I realised that I found his whole deal pretty entertaining. He just clicked with me. A lot of people justifiably hate him on sight, but I just found his blunt racism so interesting, you know? I guess I just find fascist characters in general interesting.
They're interesting to me, because fascism is such a strong, all encompassing ideology. You could call it a lifestyle in the way it colors someone's life so intensely. A fascist character inherently goes against the norm is what I'm trying to say.
The way Gary is fascist - he's dedicated, but the game also makes it clear he's pretty pathetic. You have this guy that has literal racist mugs and the Suzerainty flag hung up in his apartment and is generally known as an asshole - and yet he backs down the moment you push back at him too hard.
I'm not politically educated enough to write extensively about the ways fascism shapes someone but it does seep through his whole character. There's the obvious racism of course, but also his deep respect for authority. He also seems to have what one might call a fear of weakness, repeatedly talking about needing to be strong enough and such. Also, this interaction says a lot about him I think.
I don't know how to quite describe it, but here, you can really see the way he thinks about himself and others, you know? If you wanted to simplify it, you could say he's a really weak person trying his best to be strong.
Yeah, I guess the interesting thing about Gary is that he's so transparent. So many characters in the game are mysterious but Gary is presented really bluntly. You can literally see the cogs turning inside his head.
To get back to the basics, I find his dialogue and the way he talks and thinks fun. I like his voice. You know, I recently listened to all his voicelines and I realised that he's really trying to sound put together and scientific. All while saying pretty silly things. It's a fun combination, you know?
Another thing about Gary is, he has a surprising lot of content, at least for a minor character. He's a part of the cryptozoology quest (I love the way he and Morell just yell back and forth at each other lol). He's also a part of the armor quest. He's also a part of the fascist quest. He's the main subject of the yellow mug quest. Also, you can literally go inside his apartment and see the way he lives, his mug collection, his poster, the fact that he installed a bed trapeze bar, so Lena would have an easier time getting up.
When you really dig into what he says and what others say about him, you can really get to know this guy.
Besides his fascism, another big facet of his character is his friendship with Lena and Morell. It really brings out the best in him. They repeatedly say how much they value him, how helpful and loyal he is. At one point, Gary even says he would take a bullet for Morell haha. It's just nice, you know?
Obviously, this is meant to juxtapose and subvert his racism and all. He's a bad person, but to those two, he's a great friend. Simple stuff. But interesting. I like their specific interactions when all three of them are in the Whirling and you decide to call out Gary on the armor stealing, right there in front of them.
No matter how much the player may hate him, this is what these two think about Gary. I just think they're an interesting trio.
I guess in general, Gary is all about those contrasts. He's a racist but also a good friend. He tries to sound sophisticated but he's also pretty silly. He's outwardly respectful but you can see he wants to be cruel. The player will feel conflicted about opening his apartment and then less conflicted when they see the kind of person he is. It's a constant zig-zag with him.
I admit, a big part of why Gary appeals to me is also his inherent pathos.
He's a fascist, which makes him a pretty unpopular guy. Multiple characters say they don't like him. Obviously, he deserves this, but it's a bit sad in a way, you know? He's alienating himself from others becuase of what he sees as truth, And that whole truth of his is pretty obviously a crutch to make him feel like he understands things, like he has some control. And that's just sad, man...
There's also some hints about the way he perceives himself - see the "I shouldn't have disgraced myself" line above. I'm not gonna say that he's some poor misunderstood fella that just needs to love himself more, just that the inside of his head is probably an interesting place.
He's a guy living in a bad neighborhood and working a job he doesn't really like. Lena literally calls him "thick headed and poor as dirt" (see above). Besides Cryptozoology and fascism, he doesn't seem to have much going for him.
I'm not good at discerning themes, but I think Disco Elysium has a minor theme about the importance of community. So with this theme, a person that the majority of people dislike is going to be inherently interesting.
To simplify:
I like his face and portrait
I like his voice and the way he speaks
I think his relationship with fascism is interesting
I like the contrasts in his personality
We know a lot of tiny details about him which means we can get to know him surprisingly well
His relationship with Lena and Morell in interesting
He's inherently a bit of a sad character
Also, I just want to mention that a big reason why I started this blog is that he's so unpopular! I wanted a place where I could gather fanart and content about him, the kind of blog that I would love to read. If there was a hundred blogs all about him, I wouldn't have made this one.
I just like unpopular charcters in general. When I'm one of the few fans of a character, it makes them feel more special to me, you know? Gary really feels like he's my boy. If I don't make all the cool fanarts of him, who will?
Alright, I guess that's all. I hope I answered your question, I apologize if I got a big rambly there. I didn't start liking him for logical reasons - he just clicked with me and then I went back and tried to analyze what it is that I like about him.
Thanks for the ask!
#disco elysium#gary the cryptofascist#ask#My first ask on this blog yay!#Thank you for your sincere interest#I am aware that my interest in Gary is a bit unusual so I'm glad to have the opportunity to explain myself#I encourage anyone reading this to think about Garyboy a bit more.#Look at his dialogue and the missions tied to him and the things other characters say about him.#I think a lot of people could find Gary more interesting than they might expect!

No need for the hystrionics, sir.
#my art#This is a reference to that one line of dialogue about the trash container#Of course you'd know that if you were a REAL Gary fan B)#But I think this is what his inner dialogue looks like a lot of the time#The kind of politics he has tends to make people mildly neurotic#tw eyestrain

I'm not sure what to call this but it sure is a consistent theme for this guy.
#Strenght and weakness dichotomy? An emphasis for representing your nation with your strenght? Masculinity complex?#Something like that#Weakness seems to be a really fear for this guy is what I'm saying#Hm#Fear of weakness?

So I was browsing Fayde and found this line. Huh. Oddly dramatic.
#Yeah he says that to Morell if that's not obvious#“I'd take a bullet for you” hello???#He just says that???#Well maybe he's just being dramatic#Though Morell repeatedly says that Gary is a good and loyal friend#I think Gary would be willing to sacrifice his life for a lot of things but that's a topic for another day

I just want to say, I appreciate everyone who follows this blog. There's not many of you, but that's alright, I'm not doing this to be popular. The sole reason for this blog's existence is to express my love of Gary the Crypofascist - and it makes my day when I see someone appreciate him the same way I do.
Understandably, most people dislike him. But that just makes it more special when someone cares about my boy. He's our boy, in fact.
#If the whole world is against Gary I'm against the whole world if no one likes Gary then I'm dead etc#This is a bit sentimental but it really does make me happy when others honestly engage with his character

I need to draw Gary and Morell together sometimes. I just like them as a duo. I think I'll draw them fishing because that seems like the kind of thing they would get up to.
#Morell would then try to teach Gary how to gut the fish#And Gary would suffer because. Well he likes nature but I don't think he's good at handling this kind of stuff lol

The mood for today.
#It's oddly fun to project my issues into my drawings#Well...it's not that serious#I just messed up because I'm me and all and it will probably be forgotten about by tomorrow#Though besides my stupid baka life I think this drawing is accurate for Gary since he's.... the kind of guy he is#Anyways I like this drawing#This pose especially the hands was way harder to do than one might expect#I like the way I did the arms
