Am I happy Watcher rolled back their plan and apologized? Yes. Have I still lost any desire to watch their videos? Yes. Do I think people are being too harsh towards Steven, singling him out and such? Yes. Do I think Steven and Andrew bringing back worth it in the middle of a global cost of living crisis is extremely out of touch? Yes.
All of these things can coexist. Feelings towards the situation can be complex. It happens.

Watcher "apologized" hahahaha
I'm not re-subscribing as their handling of this transition made me lose all trust in them as a viewer, but I wish them the best i guess

i hate to say it, like i love watcher, but my thoughts on them leaving youtube is this is too much too soon, like the bulk of their fans are probs younger/unable to afford another subscription fee, plus youtube has always been where they've been?? it's just so stark to go from this being the site you put your content on for years and then to go full cold turkey, no more posting on youtube ever
and i'll be honest, they don't have enough content to warrant a separate site/subscription all together. dropout is able to pull it off because they have the full rotation of shows and cast as well (dnd, game changer, etc), whereas for watcher, they only have a few couple really successful shows and those are primarily only focused on ryan and shane.
and tbh, i don't think they have a big enough audience to launch it either, like their marketing team could do better on advertising their shows! like, i haven't been keeping up with their recent shows cause either i don't see it on my youtube algorithm at all or i have to go out of my way to go see it.
and i don't know this just feels like a kick to the face to their fans, like even dropout has shorts on youtube and keeps up all their content on youtube like some episodes and the entirety of season one of fantasy high, and now i'm seeing in the comments, that their international fans outside of the usa won't even able to subscribe cause of how payment works which is :///, so yeah, watcher, it's been nice knowing ya, but i don't know how this move will turn out for you, i'm sorry to say

making creative content online is very difficult now, i get that. i get why online creators would want to pivot to SVOD, like lindsay ellis who is now exclusively on nebula and collegehumor/droupout tv. it is tough to create when you are beholden to the whims and fancies of advertisers. HOWEVER, i cannot in good conscience say i like what watcher is doing right now. it feels extremely scummy and slimy to move entirely to streaming, without a significant transitional period, and to also delete your entire channel backlog in the process. it also feels scummy to launch a separate streaming platform while you have an active patreon where you are making a significant amount of money from your patrons--patrons who are most likely the ones to purchase a Watcher TV Subscription in the first place. i think CH did as good a job you can do when transitioning from AVOD to SVOD. in my humble opinion, CH also had a lot more of a reason to pivot to longer form subscription-based content as the changing YT algorithm made their short-form scripted sketch comedy a less and less viable business venture which matters a lot when you are a company that has over 100 full-time employees (at the time, before IAC sold and subsequently led to the bankruptcy of CH in january 2020). this just doesn't sit right with me. i would love to be proven wrong but as it stands i don't think watcher tv's existence is justifiable. this is disappointing, but honestly? not that surprising.

watcher leaving youtube, moving to their own subscription based platform, AND deleting all of their current uploads from youtube. i really don't like that. that feels kinda scummy to me. at least keep the past uploads on youtube. is that wrong of me to say?
edit: turns out they aren't deleting the back catalog on youtube. thank god. but still, i always hate paywalls.

As a long-time fan of Watcher and even BuzzFeed back in the day, I'm beyond bummed out at the decision they've made.
I can't afford a streaming service. Paywalls are ruining the internet and turning it into cable TV.
This came with absolutely no warning and it feels like a weird betrayal of loyal fans.
Best of luck to them, but this isn't a journey I can support.
