oh, we happen to have known several humans with DID so we can give an answer on this one - typically you can think of DID as a single soul split into shards. as it is still a single soul the collective has exactly one True Name, and that would be the body's True Name, so to speak. on the other hand, alters are kind of like. mini-people as well, so while they don't have individual True Names, they have Names, which still hold a small amount of power. if the alter "Ellie" gives that name away only she can be affected by any curse using that name, and it won't be as potent as if they had her True Name. on the other hand if she did give the True Name (the legal name in this case), the curse would be full strength and effect all alters.
Okay okay so I've read all ur posts on true names but I got a question nobody has asked yet - we are multiple people in one body (we got that DID shit). I don't really identify with my legal name but for the sake of simplicity let's say I do. Then, my alter who has Always been known as Ellie and never as my legal name gets into a scrap with some fae - what name did she give to screw herself over? Her name, Ellie? Or my legal name?
IM AFRAID I CANT SAY I KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT DID TO SAY FOR SURE

this is actually quite accurate - one does typically grow a new true name pretty quickly (by our standards of time anyway). honestly a year-slave is more valued even though they last less long sheerly by value of their usefulness - a stronger will is useful.
also its only the "main thing" sometimes. sometimes we also just like to "eat" the name and let the human wander back into the mortal world, nameless. its a little bit funny.
Would fae actually make a meat puppet out of a human?? Sorry, I'm kind of new to this whole mythology ordeal but it just sounded so funny to me
THATS THE MAIN THING THEY DO ACTUALLY
TAKE YOUR NAME AND USE YOU AS A MEAT SLAVE

ON HOW A FEY GAINS POWER / NAMES
we have been asked how the fey gains power - but the most important thing to know here is that fey mark their power by their Names.
a fey who has achieved great things will be awarded a Name to signify this. fey frequently give themselves Names as well, but an unearned Name has little to no power (other than the power that all Names have).
fey often do not have Names at all when they first come into being, and often a fey's first Name is decided on by themself, and is relevant to their Law. for example, a flower fey may Name themself after a particular flower, or a fey who has a law to protect may Name themself something that, to them, has strong ties to protection.
first Names tend to be simple, and do not typically bear much power. as a fey lives, it will be given Names by others, based on things they have done or a striking personality trait. for example, a fey who pulls off a particularly impressive trick may earn a Name such as "eye rook," although it is not likely to be in English.
a Name given from another who cares deeply for one bears great power as well, in the blessings meant by the Name. one who cares greatly for another may give a simple, meaningless-sounding Name, but that Name may convey a desire for one to have good luck, or to be safe. the stronger the connection between the two individuals the more power the Name has.
the more powerful the individual giving a Name, the more powerful the Name is, as well. A Lord or Lady who gives one a name may as well be indicting that individual into the nobility, as a name granted from them will hold great power and promise.
aside from Names there are not many ways for fey to gain more power than they begin life with. for fey, it is mostly a matter of honing their abilities and learning new ways in which to use them. other than that - fey may gain power through rituals or powerful objects.

we would like to keep posting more regularly on this blog - although it still gets attention we don't know what you all would like to hear about, (otherwise we'll just end up ranting about changelings and certain differences between human and fey culture incoherently)! so please, send us some requests, asks, we'll answer whatever you'd like, even if it's only tangentially related to fey. :3
a reminder
that our ask and submit boxes are open, if there are any topics you'd like us to cover, any sorts of stories you'd like to hear or share, or any advice you'd like from us! we are always happy to listen.

also a quick upkeep note - we realize our previous blog theme was a bit...unmanagable. at least for us, we frequently could not load pages (or listen to our music), but we have updated to a new theme that should be working much better now.

FURTHER, ON CHANGELINGS
one has expressed some curiosity on what may be of a child born to two changelings.
the thing to keep in mind here is that being fey is a part of the soul, which is something that changes throughout life, and not tied to human genetics. in other words, it depends on the parents at the time they conceive the child; a pair of changeling parents who have both decided to live as humans are much less likely to have a child who is fey than two changeling parents who accept their own ties to the fey.
of course, no matter the parents, other fey may still be interested in such a child, and they may be introduced to the world of fey later in life.
in short, the child of two changelings is only a little less likely to be drawn into the life of a fey, and how tied they are to the fey has everything to do with who their parents are as individuals.

How can I tell a fae accepted my offering?
there are a few ways to tell! generally the Friend in question will leave a small token, so look for anything out of the ordinary. a heads-facing coin (if you don’t already leave coins about), a leaf on a table indoors, a particularly shiny rock in your driveway that you never noticed before, could all be signs of thanks.
of course sounds are another way to tell - when fey are around you will often hear a light tinkling sound, a bit like a small bell or glass wind-chime. if you hear these sounds and your offering has disappeared this is also a good sign they have accepted your offering.
thank you, dear one, for the ask, and we wish you good luck in all your endeavors to please the fey : )

ON CHANGELINGS
changelings are a difficult topic to cover, but an important one many are interested in.
to begin, there are three types of things that can be called changelings. the children of fey gifted to human parents; the children of humans the fey take in; and, albeit rare, there are fey borne to human parents.
the first, children of fey gifted to human parents can happen for many reasons. most humans seem to simply assume fey have ill intentions to doing so, but that is typically not the case. more often than not, it is fey who desire their child to have a greater understanding and respect of humans that do this, and they will often give their children to human parents whose child has died, as repayment.
it may seem a bit counter-intuitive, but there are many fey who hold great respect for humans. fey are naturally above other beings, but humans were able to reach their way up to the top as animals. there are fey, of course, who still do not like humans, and there's not a good way to tell at a glance whether a particular fey will respect humans or not.
occasionally, a fey will give their child to a human parent for mischievous reasons, but there can be as many reasons for leaving their child to a human as there are fey who do it, such as for protection, which is also rare, but not unheard of.
onto the second, children of humans taken in by fey. in some cases a fey will simply desire the experience of raising a human, as it is more challenging than raising a youngling fey. human children are very mouldable, and these children often wind up part-fey themselves, with a more fey outlook on the world.
other times the more stereotypical thing happens, and a fey adopts a human child simply for fun. there are certainly fey out there who would take a human child as a slave or object of entertainment. it is not uncommon for humans to be given as gifts to the Lords and Ladies of the Courts. and, yes, sometimes we eat them.
the last and rarest form of changeling are those fey who are borne to human parents. it is near impossible to pin down a reason or reasons which would be more common than others, but, as an example, a fey may be incarnated within a human body to human parents. a young human who is able to see or interact with fey is also capable of winding up fey, even without intervention. one who imitates fey earnestly can become fey themselves.
as for a changelings place in fey society - unless taken for a specific purpose, they are typically treated as very intelligent pets or very powerless children. upon proving themselves changelings can hold most positions within society or Courts, and generally aren't regarded as lesser than fey.
again, changelings are a difficult subject to cover, and this is only a brief overview. let us know if you'd like to hear more on the subject, and, if so, what you would like to hear.

THINGS THE FEY ARE
the fey are always honourable and fair. but do not make the mistake to think they see honour the same way any non-fey does.
the fey are loving, and caring; they may be a bit obsessive with their love when they find someone they deem worthy, but why would they leave you alone if you are so impressive as to deserve their love?
the fey are also friendly! despite the reputation they have for ruining mortals' lives, they very often don't intend for things to go poorly for you. they just don't have a good understanding of mortality. going home 50 years later? why would that be a problem? you're family and friends should still be around, right?
the fey are tricksters - while they will never break an agreement they have made, what constitutes an agreement can be vague, and you can never know when or how a fey will collect. and they may just pull a joke on you for fun! (well, fun for them.)
the fey are. this one may seem a bit of a cheat - but the fey have always been, long before humans, and will always be, long after they are gone.
the fey are beings with an inherent understanding of the natural order. mortals don't seem to live long enough to have a full comprehension of the cycles of nature. no matter how unnatural it seems to you, a fey will never do something unnatural. gods save you if you make a claim to the contrary.

THINGS THE FEY ARE NOT
the fey are not, of course, liars. a fey cannot lie, unless it is to someone who has already lied to them, or in the process of telling a story. always keep this in mind. they do know if you’ve lied.
the fey are not cheats, either. if a fey agrees to a deal they will deliver on that deal. if you feel it is not what you agreed to, accept it is your own fault. if you try to "get even" with a fey, you will find yourself at a greater loss than you had thought possible. things can always get worse.
the fey are not gentle to those who do not deserve their kindness. their games are known to break a mortal's mind - can you imagine what they would do if they wanted to hurt you?
the fey are not pests. humans seem to think they are, perhaps because they occasionally move things around in one's home, and take loose change, but really they are just taking payment so that you do not unknowingly owe them. they are like spiders, and keep true pests away.
the fey are not easy to fool. there are many stories of humans outsmarting fey (the story of ainsel comes to mind), but those are far from the truth. a suggestion - never attempt to fool a fey.
the fey are not human. viewing them through an anthropomorphic lens will end badly. understand that if you are human, this will be hard to avoid. good luck.

a quick note on Favours
we figured we should define what we mean when we say something like “stories are our favorite Favours.” a Favour is similar to an offering, something given without the expectation of recompense. although many fey will feel obligated to give something in return, and, in fact, giving a Favour to a fey pretty much always nets you something good in return, as if the fey even chooses to repay it at all, it is because they enjoy you have given freely something unto them.
