i was given the freedom to use my usual designs, but aldanil has THE MOST wonderful designs for the Feanorians (and so much more!!) that I've always wanted to draw as well 🥳 these mini pieces are of Feanor and Curufin inspired from this adorable Palantir comic, and their Dragon Prince OC Felyon!

happy 2023!! here is a little something thats been sitting in my drafts for some time abt the gradual expansion of finwe's family over time 😙 i wanted to do one additional page of the post-morgoth/silmaril decline, but it took like 3 weeks to finish the colouring n ive run out of patience so... maybe ill leave that for a future part 2 pheeeeeew

apologies for the long hiatus/absence once again... its been a rough sorta year so ive been taking lotsa breaks in-between to focus on my own wellbeing... that kinda thing? 😲 i cant make many promises til i get more things figured out, but im looking forward to catching up w/ silm tumblr...! i have a commission ill be posting monday or sometime soon, then i want to catch up on all the asks and requests that have been marinating in my inbox 💓

hey all: don’t use lensa. 

I just did a quick search of the Laion database (which it ultimately uses) for ‘maedhros’ and ‘feanor’, and what do you know - loads of stolen silm fanart. Some of it is clearly the work of people who currently use this site (hi @atarinke and @arlenianchronicles​ ) and others are from both long-established fanartists (Jenny Dolfen, ilxwing, Elena Kukanova, etc.) as well as people just starting out and drawing on lined paper in class. It is indiscriminate. I’m lucky I haven’t found any of mine yet, but I don’t want to give this any more of my time. 

using lensa and any other ai trained on stolen art takes away credit and the livelihoods of the artists whose work has been stolen - many of whom come from our own little corner of the internet.

Silmarillion is tragedy but LotR is hope taking tragedy’s hand and telling it that even darkness must pass.

I think that’s part of what makes reading the Silm after LotR such an experience, because you know all that pain and tragedy, it’s not for nothing. That without all that happened in the Silm the victory in LotR wouldn’t have been possible. That all those things happened to bring the world to that point.

So yes, I will read a thousand fanfics of people bringing Maglor home. I will read of Frodo, Bilbo, and Sam finding healing and peace in Valinor and helping the Elves heal their own sorrows and tragedies. I will greedily consume tales of the mending of the division between Feanor and his brothers. I will drowned myself in anything that takes LotR’s hope and turns it on the Silmarillion to mend its tragedy.

The Silmarillion tells us that tragedies happen, but LotR tells us there is hope and compassion and healing to overcome them and move forward.

the Silmarillion modern au I really want is a family drama/comedy/some romance & a dash of action, in Elrond is nearing graduation from med school and trying to work up the courage to ask out Celebrian, when for poorly explained reasons his 5-6* “ex”-mob foster-uncles, only 1 of whom he’s ever met, are all let out on parole simultaneously.

* Idk how to balance the impact of ALL that literal death with the fact that modern au humans can’t come back from the dead, so I’m willing to accept that 1 brother did actually die. Probably Amrod.

While my brain is in the mood for silm crack, here's some very random fourth age shenanigans:

- Maglor and Legolas somehow meet in Valinor (or maybe they even journey there together like in that one post) and surprisingly they immediately get along. Their chaos and love for music as well as the fact that they're left unsupervised for all of two minutes results in the invention of a distant and much louder ancestor of the bagpipes.

- When Maedhros is released from Mandos, he hasn't heard Maglor is back, so his immediate objective is smuggle self out of Valinor, go to Middle-Earth, find brother.

- When he is trying to build a boat in a frenzy, he meets Legolas and tells him about the brother he needs to find, but gives a false name. Legolas, who has defied the Valar before, agrees to come with him, saying it'd be nice to visit home. ("If I had a gold coin for each time I met and befriended a Fëanorian at the beach and got into wacky shenanigans with them, I'd have two gold coins, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice")

- They stumble through Middle-Earth for a good while until one day Legolas mentions his good friend Káno and demonstrates their invention and Maedhros is like WHAT. ALL THIS FOR NOTHING? and that is how he learns that identity theft is not a joke.

Ok ok ok I was just equally shocked as anybody when I saw The Rings of Power’s Elrond. (tbh I didn’t know it was him at first and my sister is still in denial)

But please consider the following:

- Maglor not recognizing him (either because the SA look is too different from the one Maglor knew, or because Elrond has changed so much in TA and Maglor goes “Who is this person with the same name as my son?”)

- Elladan, Elrohir and Arwen finding old paintings/drawings of their father and going “Who the fuck is that”, “He looks familiar tho” and “An unknown cousin perhaps?”

No guys, just your father in his “I am a politician and I have a lot of ambition guys” phase. (Choose wether the one saying this is Glorfindel, Erestor, Celebrian, Celeborn or Galadriel)

They make the shocked Pikatchu face™

- Years later, Gandalf showing the Fellowship these same old drawings. Boromir doesn’t understand. Aragorn already knew, but he can’t hold back a laugh seeing the others’ face. The hobbits are shocked, “They’re the same person, really?”. Legolas knew too, because Thranduil wouldn’t miss a chance to have fun about Elrond. Gimli mutters “Those elves I swear”. Gandalf is proud of himself. Elrond suddenly feels like killing someone.

- When he sails and people who died too eraly don’t recognize him, he just wants to CRY WHY

Hello! Local gremlin here to ask: who was your favorite Silm character and who was your least favorite?

This is SUCH a DIFFICULT question because I have an enormous proportion to love every single character of a book even John, the rock the main hero walked on page 45 chapter 2.

BUT I will try to take a decision – spoilers: I failed

For the favorite character, well. They’re a lot. I once argued with my sister about that question and it was a total mess.

Because you know there are these characters who committed unforgivable crimes and yet, you CAN’T dislike them *cough* the Fëanorians *cough* (but also people like Maeglin because he was a baby ok, he did nothing wrong)

There are these characters who are cuties and you want to hug them and tell them everything will be ok: Finrod, Celebrimbor, Beleg, Túrin, Glorfindel, SO MANY.

The dear forgotten ones Tolkien once mentioned and then… oops: Argon, best example of this category (also a cutie you want to hug). But I also think about the Vanyar because… you barely hear about them? Ingwion who?

The badass Women™ because they cool: Lúthien, Galadriel, Nerdanel, Idril, Haleth, Lalwen…

For some reason I also happen to have a HUGE love for Círdan. Like, he stayed there with his people, had a good relationship with Ulmo, helped the Noldor even if they murdered his kin across the sea, fought, resisted, accepted to parent Gil Galad in the middle of this mess, continued to help people, accepted a ring of power, fought AGAIN, and again against Angmar, welcomed the Istari with a great smile and a cookie, had the intelligence to give his ring to Gandalf, prepared a boat for him…

A cutie. That’s why I will declare that Círdan is my favorite character.

I rambled way too much.

About my least favorite… Uh, difficult too.

Because there are these characters who ARE the bad guys™, like Morgoth, Ungoliant, Gothmog, Sauron, the orcs and goblins and all this guys. Because they hurt your favorite characters, they MEAN.

But there are also these ones who are jerks like Eöl, Ulfang, Saeros, and who mess up in this one chapter and you hate them at this PRECISE MOMENT (Celegorm and Curufin why hurting Finrod WHY)

And then I read posts about a possible redemption and a possible backstory explaining their crimes and I feel emotional and suddenly I don’t hate them anymore.

That’s it, that’s the problem. I am the problem.

hehe so you really remembered that one post oh gosh! now i say i have thoughts and ideas, but rly it's just me spewing a mess of headcanons onto a blank png file and calling it progress 😂

buuut YES basically i do think that hair-cutting is kind of... not to say taboo in elven culture, but it is not something done lightly on a whim. ive been writing way too much on it these few days and ive reached a consensus where i think that hair is regarded as kind of a very important part of the identity of an elf (especially the Calaquendi).

which leads me to other railroads spawning the use of elven prisoner hair to make bowstrings... but i digress 😩💅

ANYHOW im having a brain fart rn and i dont know how to properly say this, but basically i like to think over the years the Eldar do tend to separate the ""most-accepted"" reasons for hair cutting into three main categories:

ive had this hc for such a long time!!! i kind of hinted at it all the way back in March, the first time I drew Celebrimbor in this post, but never really plopped down to bake it until you asked 😂😂 some extra occasions for hair cutting are below bc why not!!!
