“Her Body Still”
She waited quietly,
held breath.
It was almost dark;
she wasn’t frightened.
She noticed her body still,
wanting to frighten the little animal she was,
amazed that it would come.
She extended her hand, palm open;
the skin of her,
the surprising weight of
the animal’s body pressing her down.
I could see her,
carried by the wind.
She was screaming.

“The World, This Village”
by A. A. Parr
Rain fell
in a torrent,
the ocean
beyond;
cloaked in
what she had expected,
she had come
every day.
She liked the isolation
the world,
this village,
amply supplied,
a level
equal to
the constant, unending
examining.
“Listen,
hear it,
Listen,”
it
built and emerged until it
burst low through
ocean fog
and back,
over the water, then
ease, and back,
looking for
the words.
