tip for improving japanese reading speed!

how about you try some カラオケ???

i've been doing this for a couple years now and i think this has single-handedly made my reading speed in japanese improve to the point of almost being as fast as it is in english (although i still struggle with kanji and katakana sometimes x_x)

to find one, i usually just search on youtube (song name) followed by either カラオケ or ニコカラ. if nobody has made a karaoke for your song of choice, then i'd otherwise search up (song name) followed by 歌詞 (kashi/lyrics) and you'll usually find them that way. i like to use the site utaten.com because they all feature furigana! be a little careful though because while its only happened to me a couple of times, there's been times where the furigana is wrong for one or two words.

i think this is a really fun way to practice especially if you love singing, like i do!! i've never seen anyone else recommend this so i hope this helps

先週末の日曜日、二世ウィークという祭りのパレードに着物部と参加した！すごく楽しかった！！浴衣を着たり、メンバーと写真を取ったり、フィアンセとラーメンを食べたりした！浴衣を着方のビデオを見て、自分で着付けた。簡単でよかったな。次回に浴衣を着たり着物部とイベントを参加したりするのは楽しみ！(^.^)

great for shadowing practice with a few listening exercises mixed in. perfect if you are using the genki series!

with the way vocab was introduced in Genki, I had a hard time retaining anything until I started using jpdb.io and found the genki vocab decks. since those helped me SO much, I decided to go ahead and start the tobira vocab deck after I made the choice to continue advanced Japanese with that textbook!

I am really happy I had the forsight to start this as soon as I could because I'm already done with it! now I can focus on reenforcement with context from the textbook 💪🏾✨️

side note: tobira doesn't have English translations for practice text or grammar examples, which I am very grateful for. no handholding over here! 🙅🏾‍♀️

I'm loving Tobira so far! the short grammar explanations and tons of examples are perfect. doing the grammar workbook as well has me feeling really confident about this textbook 😄

I officially started Tobira this week!!! 😄✨️ I decided that I'm going to do this book with another italki tutor because I feel like going through this with a teacher would be best, but I don't want to take a class. my teacher is really fun, so I'm excited 😊✨️

✨️July review!✨️ okay, hi? I guess it's August?! wild 😂 this month flew by, but it was really great! I finished N4 on bunpro, really got into KGIU, and did sooo much immersion! the total here doesn't even include my minimmersion weekend! 😱 I also started with a second italki teacher! I decided that it would probably be best if I did Tobira with a teacher, but I didn't want to sign up for a class 😊

my August is pretty busy, so crossing my fingers I'll be able to meet these goals! I really dragged my feet with level 8 漢検, so I'm hoping to really finish that in the next week, especially since I want to do the tobira kanji book along with the textbook. I am really liking lingory for Korean grammar, so I plan to do that on days I'm not doing KGIU, which I hope to do a couple of times a week at least. juggling multiple languages is harder than I thought, but having more structure by meeting with a tutor every week will help me stay on track with Japanese and still leave some casual time with Korean 😊

✨️last week's studies!✨️ a great last full week of the month! I realized I'm not going to hit all of my goals for the month, but I am going to hit more than half!

lots of immersion, because I'm still very much into pokemon, and a great amount of kanji! I was SO close to finishing level 8 漢検, but it seems I still have a couple of days remaining 😩 oh well.

I'm really getting the hang of my korean vocab cards and I'm so excited by that I've also started using lingory and I like it! does anyone else use that app? 👀

✨️last week's studies!✨️ I had two days in a row where I hit every category! 😱 I always feel so accomplished when that happens.

lots of immersion, with a fair amount of listening and speaking (still room for improvement, tho!) I am figuring out a way to bounce between focusing on Japanese grammar one day and Korean grammar the next, and I feel pretty good about that rhythm! I'm finally almost through the introduction(??) of KGIU. I don't quite understand why it's set up this way, but 🤷🏾‍♀️
