Would you please be able to record the witches and their descriptions now that your incharge of the archive channel? The witches are my favorite part of the series, especially with the new animations ingame for them!

I’ll definitely look at recording their archive sections! Some of the little details in their files are only really apparent when you go in and look around, so I’m hoping to get the “character” files and the labyrinth look arounds as well!

The Magia Exedra Video Archive has now rebranded! Welcome everyone to AbareroExedra!

For many years now, denizens of the world have been able to watch recordings of the game Magia Record, and more recently Magia Exedra, thanks to the hard work of one @muffinrecord. It was through their archival work that many were able to enjoy these games and so, as they hang up their hat after a job well done, I have stepped up to carry on where they’ve left off.

Who am I? Well, you can call me Abarero. I’ve been a fan of Madoka Magica since it released, and fell deeper into the universe with the English server release of Magia Record. I then proceeded to play Magia Record on three separate servers (NA, CN and JP) up until the game ended.

Previously you may have seen my name credited on translated homescreen quotes for Magia Record girls, then I began the @magireco-minibang project to help more authors and artists produce fanworks for the fandom. Most recently, I’ve had the honor of working on @connectfanzine as one of the moderators. And now, I will be your go-to source for Magia Exedra story content!

I’m very thankful to Muffin for entrusting me with this task and with your help, I hope to keep the stories of Magia Exedra up for everyone to enjoy!

Meanwhile as I call it a night, I leave you with my current feelings on the matter (which is basically a baffled feeling of how did I end up here? /very positive )

Mikoto and Hanna, Trope Edition

Here’s my list of 20 major tropes for these two, focusing on pretty much all of their major canon appearances.

Spoilers for Hanna MGS, Mikoto MGS, Hanna’s Exedra full Episodes, Sayonara Storage, Magia Record Arc 2, Memory Drops, Uwasa Mikoto MGS, Magia Exedra’s The Case Files of the Coordinator 1: The Many-Worlds Interpretation Poesy

Hanna:

Despair Event Horizon: This happens to the alternate timeline Hanna in Magia Exedra: The Case Files of the Coordinator 1: The Many-Worlds Interpretation Poesy. After Mikoto seemingly disappears without a reason (thanks to Ultimate Madoka taking her into the Law of Cycles), Hanna completely loses her sense of morality in a Face-Heel Turn and turns to lashing out at the world instead. She begins instigating problems for others and becomes hellbent on finding a way to another universe where Mikoto still exists, no matter what it takes. 

Dying Declaration of Love: In Magia Exedra’s episodes for Hanna, they add one of these declarations as she’s fading away after crushing her own Soul Gem.

Hanna Sarasa: I was enveloped in a white light, but through a gap...

Hanna Sarasa: ...I could see ya cryin' like a baby.

Hanna Sarasa: What're you still doin' here? Is this all...a dream? Not that it matters...

Hanna Sarasa: ...since I found ya.

Mikoto Sena: Why did this happen?

Mikoto Sena: I don't care about "evil" or "hope"!

Mikoto Sena: I...I just...

Mikoto Sena: I just wanted to be by your side!

Hanna Sarasa: At the end, I gave her a gentle hug.

Hanna Sarasa: Hey, Mikoto...

Hanna Sarasa: I love you.

Hanna Sarasa: I really, really wanted to be with you forever.

Go Mad from the Revelation: Hanna, on having her best and only friend, Mikoto turn into a Witch in front of her is hit with this as she realizes the Awful Truth that Magical Girls become Witches. When Kyubey comes to her after this and clarifies the truth, Hanna suffers a complete breakdown, laughing hysterically and bashing her head on the ground. 

Hidden Villain: Hanna serves as this in both the Azalea Trio plotline and Nanaka and her group’s storyline. This resurfaces in the Magia Exedra event, when it turns out the culprit was a Hanna from an alternate timeline. 

Morality Chain: Hanna serves as this for Mikoto throughout their story. Mikoto constantly thinks of Hanna as kind and selfless and it’s Hanna who works to mitigate the fallout from Mikoto’s destructive tendencies once she witches out. She goes out of her way to lessen the destruction Mikoto wishes for in Sayonara Storage by suggesting lesser evils, such as vandalism of the school. In Uwasa Mikoto’s MGS, she instructs Mikoto to make pipe bombs, which ends up being a ruse. Hanna instead uses the supplies she gathers to repair a broken merry-go-round and all the bombs end up being fake.

Necessarily Evil: Hanna’s villainy in Sayonara Storage hinges entirely on her belief she can use it to convince Mikoto to believe in goodness and hope again. She fully intends and is counting on the good guys to kill her once her deeds are done. (Nanaka is unable to do so, and so Hanna crushes her own Soul Gem instead). 

Power Copying: Hanna’s magic ability is to copy the powers of other Magical Girls. She has previously tested this ability via some girls who are no longer around, but prefers to keep Mikoto’s power of suggestion instead of anything else as she can only hold one power at a time.

Retcon: This applies to a lot of the early Hanna content (Flower’s Lament, Hanna MGS) and has been later revised to fit her role post Mikoto’s release. First by implications and expansions to scenes in Memory Drops, but then even further in Exedra.

Notable retcons in her story are:

Her father’s backstory. Originally he was around from the time she was born, changing his abuse target from her mother to Hanna. This is retconned in Magia Exedra’s Hanna episodes, in which it’s told that for a while her father wasn’t around, because her mother was the woman he was cheating on his first wife with. He shows up in Hanna’s life around the time Hanna starts elementary school, having been left by his first wife. 

His beatings also are retconned from being just “drunken outrages” to “if I ever did even the slightest thing wrong.”

The situation with Hanna’s bullies is also retconned in to some degree in Memory Drops and then further in Magia Exedra. The latter explains that at first Hanna was not the target of the bullies, but that she stood up for the girl who was. This girl later joins the bullies in harassing Hanna.

Next retcon is Hanna’s reaction to her wish. In Magia Exedra, it’s explained that she immediately had regrets for wishing to erase the bullies from existence.

Hanna Sarasa: Those bullies completely and utterly vanished...

Hanna Sarasa: ...and no one remembered they ever existed.

Hanna Sarasa: And though my entire body trembled with happiness...

Hanna Sarasa: ...in my heart, I knew I'd done something that couldn't be undone.

Hanna Sarasa: I could never become a hero who saved others.

The above discrepancies could be possibly explained by the fact Hanna’s MGS is post her Going Mad from the Revelation, so it’s possible her memory is warped. But it’s more likely, that they adapted and Rewrote to fit where her character goes in later installments of her story. This sort of retcon also heavily involves the event Flower’s Lament, which is later retold via Perspective Flip from Hanna and Mikoto’s POV in Sayonara Storage, putting a new spin on the intents of the characters.

Significant Name Shift: Hanna always refers to Mikoto by her last name, Sena. Except for two very notable shifts. The first is during Hanna’s death in Magia Exedra’s episodes for the character. She says, “My beloved, Mikoto Sena” as she’s embracing her goodbye. This is the first time she uses Mikoto’s first name. The second and third occasions are during the event Memory Drops. The second of these is her once more echoing the previous, with a “This girl is…my dear Mikoto Sena.” But the third occasion is the most significant and notable. As Mikoto and Hanna lie dying, their memories starting to fade, Hanna switches to calling her Mikoto. This switch continues, with Hanna calling her Mikoto, for the rest of their short time left.

Hanna: Hey…um…er…Mikoto?

Mikoto: I had no idea why, but just hearing her say my name filled my heart with such joy.

Mikoto: I call her by her first name, so surely, wouldn't she just call me Mikoto too…? I'm sure nothing's changed, but…why…?

Mikoto: Why am I…so happy…?

Tragic Villain: Hanna turns to villainy after Mikoto witches out solely due to two reasons. One, she has Gone Mad From the Revelation and intends to do things that would go against Kyubey and the Incubators. Two, on managing to attach Mikoto’s spirit to herself, she realizes Mikoto’s pseudo-witch state has made Mikoto long for destruction. Hanna decides to play along with this with the intention of dying a villain to the good guys to prove to Mikoto that she should believe in goodness and hope.

Mikoto:

Be Careful What You Wish For: Mitama makes her fateful wish with Kyubey at the exact time Mikoto witches out. Later on, she realizes the Mirror Witch was born at the same time as her wish, and she worries that it was her wish that granted it the powers of destruction.

Body Surf: Mikoto’s magic ability after witching out, (possibly due to Hanna’s attempts to call her back), result in her being a consciousness that can transplant itself into different people. This starts with Hanna, and then she goes through a few unnamed hosts before settling with Alina. She later uses this power to give her Mirror Witch abilities to Iroha and to possess Nemu’s body in order to make an Uwasa body for herself and Hanna in Memory Drops.

Came Back Wrong: Mikoto’s attempts at creating an Uwasa for herself and the deceased Hanna backfires in that Mikoto’s rumor causes Hanna to absorb malice. Mikoto decides to take this burden onto herself, which results in her losing her memories and becoming a serial attacker.

Compelling Voice: Mikoto’s personal magic ability, the power of suggestion, works to make Familiars, Witches and people obey what she says. After Hanna uses her personal magic to copy it, she too uses it frequently. 

Despair Speech: Mikoto gives one of these to Iroha, with Chizuru’s help, in Chapter 12 of Arc 2. 

Grief Makes You Crazy: Mikoto truly shifts from hope to despair after Hanna’s death. She believes any world that took Hanna from her isn’t worth saving. This becomes amplified when her Mirror Witch reaches mirrors into other timelines and the past, which show her the ongoing tragedy in the history of Magical Girls. She then comes to believe that destroying everything is the best recourse, because otherwise everyone will just suffer and despair.

Ignorance is Bliss: Once Mikoto realizes she can use her personal magic of suggestion on herself, she proceeds to do so daily, only remembering when she arrives back home to find she doesn’t have the loving, supportive parents she had convinced herself she had. This ends up becoming an issue because her constant magic use ends up severely darkening her Soul Gem.

Morality Chain: Hanna serves as this for Mikoto throughout their story. After Mikoto witches out, it’s Hanna’s actions that mitigate the damage she causes. Tragically, when Hanna sets herself up to die to the good guys to teach Mikoto a lesson, Mikoto loses this morality and becomes a force hellbent on destruction. In Memory Drops, Mikoto resurrects Hanna and once more Hanna works to keep Mikoto’s hands clean by lessening her damages as much as possible or taking on her sins.

Resurrected Romance: Mikoto pulls this in the event Memory Drops by transplanting herself into Nemu’s body and creating Uwasa forms for herself and the deceased Hanna. Too bad the forms Came Back Wrongand result in memory loss and eventually fading from existence.

Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Mikoto after Hanna’s death becomes this, the combination of the loss and her witch-self hearing the voices of suffering Magical Girls, convinces her that the world should be destroyed. She starts by using Alina’s (her new host) unstable mind to attempt to get her to destroy everything at the end of Arc 1, when this doesn’t succeed she uses her witch to build up power and open up mirrors to parallel worlds, in an attempt to destroy things that way at the end of Arc 2.
