Guys I just really really really hate characters who only exist to topple the chessboard.

You have your main conflict and you have some side conflicts and those can and should all intersect at crucial points in the plot.

These plots are carefully arranged, the characters painstakingly placed at necessary locations in the story's world. The puzzle is all coming together, and the finely laid plans of the characters and the intentions of the writers are all laid out for the audience to take in. The only thing left is to see how the final surge will play out. The chess match we all bought tickets for is moving into its final stages, and we are on the edge of our seats, waiting to see who will get the checkmate.

And then some oaf, some utter buffoon, some lumbering elephant out of nowhere, stomps in and just flips the chessboard into the air and says 'that game was dumb I wanna play pop-o-matic trouble' and the audience is FORCED to watch beloved characters tediously and desparately try to stop this rampaging ape who has never even heard of chess and not only doesn't want to learn about it, but actively refuses to allow the chess players to get back to their match. 'We are playing TROUBLE NOW" they bellow. And we sit, gobsmacked, in our theater seats, or in our living rooms, while the chess match is abandoned and the characters resign themselves playing a stupid, senseless, waste of time game that requires no skill and offers nothing but a dissatisfying ending no matter what happens after this.
