kinda kills me to see people complaining about the tone of rebels vs andor. it makes me wonder if we watched the same show. The show with the empire rounding up and killing children and their parents. The show with the child solider training factory. The show where a corpse is used as bait. The show that tortures numerous main characters ON SCREEN. The show that touches on how cold and lifeless living in a fascist regime is. Rebels isn't perfect and I really wish Filoni had a bit more guts in some places to show stuff, but people I think see animation and hear the type of jokes that are in the show to break the tension, jokes Andor doesn't have, and decide that Rebels isn't covering what it covers and I just.... what....

And, we're done.

A few thoughts.

One:

I love heists. Leverage is *legit* one of my favorite TV shows. I hadn't really thought about how much of a "heist show" Season 1 of Andor is until I saw Season 2 and there were no heists.

S1 had about 3 heists in it -- Aldhani obviously; Narkina is a prison break, which is a heist where you're stealing prisoners; the ending on Ferrix is Cassian sneaking in, then sneaking out with Bix and the gang.

The sneaky thefts that happen in S2 are flat, and quickly resolved -- the listening device in the party, whatever the hell Syril is doing on Ghorman, whatever the hell Vel and Cinta are doing on Ghorman, Cassian saving Mon from the senate -- When you combine these with the 3episodes/year format, for me that reduced the tension and forward momentum of the show overall and removed one of the things I liked about S1.

Maybe this is why my fave SW fanfics that I've written, and like to read, are heists.

Two:

In S1, the romantic relationships felt complex, and integrated into the story. They supported the plot, and complicated it. Vel's feelings for Cinta make Aldhani and Ferrix harder. Bix and Cassian's situationship is a driving motivation for both of them. Syril pursues Dedra in the most maladaptive way possible. Mon and Perrin are just a hot mess. These relationships are characters in and of themselves.

In S2, those same relationships were either ignored entirely (Mon and Perrin?), nonsensical (Syril and Dedra?), or just used as levers to action, without the emotional tension and investment that makes them worthwhile. I still don't know why Cinta had to die other than to give Vel a single scene crying...she then spends the rest of the show on Yavin. I still don't see what connects Bix's drug use then revenge scene to whatever the hell she's doing on Yavin. and dont' get me started on the baby.

And did Syril really think he wasn't a pawn of the Empire? Did Dedra really give a shit? Does any of that make sense?

IMHO, the only relationship that does make sense isn't romantic but familial -- Luthen & Kleya. and that's mostly because we got a solid 3 episodes about that relationship and the lengths each of them will go thru for the other. When she goes full James Bond in the hospital to not only mercy kill her dad, but also to protect her dad's dream? That's good shit. That's rebellion shit. That's Luke saving Anakin form himself level shit.

IT was a great show, a nice way to spend some time. But S2 really doesn't live up to S1. It basically goes like that.

I just finished episode 9 of Andor -- so no spoilers for the final three please, but I cannot stop thinking about the way this show illustrates the dehumanization of the Imperial machine, but does not shy away from showing the humanity of those who are dehumanized by the machine that they perpetuate and in so doing, it is so much more powerful than if it participated in these character's dehumanization by trivializing them. And in doing this, it's a powerful manifesto of liberty and freedom as well as being such damn good television.
