PROTOTYPING; The Flying Chair / Spatial Decaying
PROTOTYPING; The Flying Chair / Spatial Decaying
Continuing our journey of exploring, now we explore the potential of the XO-Muqarnas structure system, through prototyping a new chair. in this post we share the first photos of the prototype and testing balance , stability and loads. Testing balance & a load of 66kg. Prototyping: spatial decaying. tell us What do you think about this chair? #prototype #product_design #flying #chair #muqarnas…

muqarnas lego /a 3D printed composition
when i was a child i was interested in lego bricks and their compositions. so i decided to work on developing a previous project: el muqarnas composition to be applicable for 3D printing technology, through modeling a repeatable unit with tenons and mortises to build up a closed stable system. the unit fits a volume of 73mm X 68mm X 68mm sketch up model different views for the repeatable unit…

the two nodes ornament
– the whole is consists of a number of parts (squares / squares and rectangles), when the system changes the generated ornament will vary. – the parts and the spaces in between shapes the generated ornament according to the building rules (grid / proportion). -the two nodes ornament named for the two squares which define the ornament shape.   1:1 the ornament in 1:1 proportion, try to conclude…

(via the profile mirror / 3:8 ratios composition) the mirror celebrates the reflected object/ person, like a photo frame for an impermanent photo, the geometric ornament was formed of a repetition of squares and rectangles in 3:8 ratio.

In preparation: “Rams” – A documentary film by Gary Hustwit.
Love the Helvetica film, a must-see specially for design students, and so I am happy to spread the news that – hopefully – another gem is on its way, this time focussing on Dieter Rams, the great designer and his outstanding works. Please join the Rams kickstarter campaign to make it happen.

the flying cabinet
after a long research on the mid-century furniture vocabularies and features, i decided to work on the flying cabinet which consist of a 210cm * 55cm * 43.2cm BOX that was made of sheets of mdf and routed by CNC router, the box’s faces were joined together by CNC tenons and mortises. the box is 43.2 cm above the ground and  standing on el-muqarnas structure system that was solve in CNC.   the…

(via twin chair /the repeating series)
twin chair is a part of a set of living room furniture with the same vocabularies; 1:1 wooden stripes, 1:1 ornament line and the end cube.
the series is a re-design for the traditional moroccan sofa with edgy post-modern treatment.
the chair is made of beech wood and joined with the traditional tenon and mortise joinery........

(via a three dimensional decaying; installation)
............. i chose the linear plan of 45 degree triangle as showed in the photo above, the idea was to make a contemporary muqarnas composition; a structure system, started from traditional muqarnas compositions to trusses structure system through carpentry and wood joining techniques.
design the cross-section; the structure wooden members, took many steps to reach an identical repetitive shape that forms a octagon star when the 8 parts come together.
forming the composition repetitive unit in 3D by solving the 2D plan and the 2D side-view to determine the 3D.
now we have an identical repetitive unit that could multiply and make a variable and infinite compositions of its copies.
the design process was finished, and i had to start execution i asked a carpenter to shape  some beech wood by the router. after i resumed the execution process miter cutting, coding, painting the wood with oil, grooving, drilling, and finally joining.

(via ferka /a textile design workshop) a two days workshop with freka artisans.
............. the main design challenge was to transform the solid areas of the ornament to a series of stripes to be executed on the ferka loom.
the second challenge was to convince the artisans to use the ruler and respect the inner dimensions of each motif; the thread thickness of the foreground and the background, and overall the motif outer dimensions.

(via parts, parts and the whole)
the relation between the parts and the whole is one of the important aesthetics aspects in the traditional and the classical arts. the geometrical islamic composition respects the mathematical relations -module- in the building of the unit and its composition, creating the pattern.
in this project, the first phase was designing a geometric repetitive unit in a square outline. the square outline was subdivided into a grid of squares, the unit is symmetrical on one axe and repeatable -creates variable shapes when it multiplies- .
